Coach Josh Fontaine

Our next game is a big one…taking on New Mexico State, the team we’ve been tied with for first place the entire conference season. Unfortunately SG Livan Forney won’t be ready to return to play until just AFTER that game. It sure would be nice to have him back when we go up against New Mexico State. Both teams have 9 game win streaks on the line as well as gaining 1st place in the Western Athletic Conference.

February/March Game Results:

Chicago State—87, New Nexico State—74 (This game was razor close throughout the first half and for a big portion of the 2nd half. Chicago State—105, Abilene Christian—62 (Total and complete domination by the Cougars who never trailed in this game. Chicago State outshot the Wildcats 61% to 40% and held advantages in rebounding (42-22) and turnovers (17-8). The entire bench got a lot of playing time. Leading the scoring was C Michael McMahon with 28 points to go along with 8 boards. PG Miguel Soto scored 20 points. SF Donnell Tate hit for 14 points and SG Livan Forney scored 13 points in his first game in over 2 months.) [22-1, 10-0, sole possession of 1st place]

Award: C Michael McMahon was named the WAC’s Player of the Week and the Freshman Player of the Week.

Polls: Chicago State is now #14 in both polls.

Chicago State—88, Seattle—74 (Seattle got out to an initial lead but the Cougars pulled ahead for good 6 minutes into the game. By the end of the first half it was 47-34 in favor of Chicago State. Although Seattle hit 50% of their shots, the Cougars hit 56% and held small advantages on the boards and for turnovers. C Michael McMahan knocked down 17 points and PF Vince Madsen and PG Miguel Soto both scored 13 while C Izaak Hargrove added 12.) [23-1, 11-0, 1st place, 2 games ahead of New Mexico State]

PG Cameron Brown came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 18 points. PF Donnell Tate poured in 17 points. SG Livan Forney scored 11 and SF Rory Nelson added 10.) [24-1, 12-0, 1st place]

Injury: Livan Forney, who just recently returned to the lineup after missing two months of play, came down hard injuring his wrist late in the game. While it’s not expected to keep him from playing, it could well impact how he plays for the next week or two.

Chicago State—89, Lamar—58 (Chicago State’s lead grew steadily throughout the entire game as they beat the Cardinals in every aspect of the game. C Michael McMahon had 23 points and 8 rebounds to lead the team. Others scoring in double figures were SF Donnell Tate with 15, C Izaak Hargrove with 11, and PG Miguel Soto with 10.) Then the Cougars began to assert dominance and opened a 15 point lead with 7 minutes to go in the game. The Texans cut into the lead a little but never got close enough to put fear in the hears of the Cougars. PF Vince Madsen scored 16, C Michael McMahon put in 14 points, and C Izaak Hargrove had 10 points and 8 boards. Livan Forney is having difficulty shooting well with his sore wrist, but Coach Fontaine wants to keep him in the lineup to continue to tune up for post-season play.) Chicago State—81, California Baptist—71 (“We weren’t firing on all cylinders tonight,” said Coach Fontaine. “It’s fortunate we did a good job on the boards.” There were 9 lead changes in the first 10 minutes but the Cougars then began to draw away and led 50-41 at the end of the half. But their offense went south in the 2nd half. They needed the extra chances they got by being +10 in rebounding. SG Livan Forney put together a strong game with 15 points and 8 rebounds. C Michael McMahon had 13 points and 9 boards. SF Donnell Tate scored 11 with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.) [27-1, 15-0, nailed down the conference championship with one game to go.]

Health: The next day Donnell Tate came down with the flu so will miss the Cougars last conference game.

Chicago State—88, Abilene Christian—64 (Although the Cougars started out OK, the Wildcats began hitting their shots while Chicago State’s shooting went cold and Abilene Christian took a small lead midway through the half and increased it to 8 points before the Cougars were able to chip away and get their deficit down to 38-35 at the break. Donnell Tate’s absence seemed to be affecting the Cougars cohesiveness. Chicago State scored the first 6 points of the 2nd half to get out in front. While the Cougars didn’t explode, they were ablre to slowly increase their lead and with 10 minutes left they were ahead 64-52. Recruiting

We had 3 scholarships to fill. Last fall we got two SF’s to commit. One was a 2 star and other a 1 star recruit. Both are likely to need a year or two of seasoning to be ready to compete for starting roles. Then in mid-April we went after a 4 star C who hadn’t committed anywhere and somewhat surprisingly he decided to come play for us next season. He’s ranked as the 114th best recruit and is a very good scorer and rebounder and a solid defender.
