Summary of Games the Week of 12/25/37 to 12/31/37:

Conference R

Alcorn State (5-5)—82, Southern California—58 (The Braves were not intimidated at all by the Trojans and quickly established control and then continued to build upon their lead all the way up to the end of the game. They outshot Southern California 58% to 42% and held a 33-22 rebounding advantage. C Mikko Stallings hit 10 of 13 from the field and scored 23 points. PG Caswell Cook contributed 17 points, SG Andy Carney dropped in 14 points, and SF Harold Hein added 12 points. Those 4 players made 27 of 38 FGA’s.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8-2)—79, St. Joseph’s—65 (The Golden Lions continued to play top-notch basketball. After trailing by 4 points at the half, they kept close throughout the 2nd half and then overtook the favored Hawks in the final 5 minutes to come away with a hard-fought victory. All 5 starters scored in double figures: SG Bill Thorton-20 points; SF Dan Jefferson-14 points, C Chris Betts-12 points plus 16 rebounds, PF Andrew Richardson-12 points and 9 boards and 8 assists, and PG Albert Taylor-11 points.)

Conference T

Maryland-Eastern Shore (5-5)—87, Mount St. Mary’s—75 (21 lead changes and 11 ties showed just how close this game was mostof the way. But with the game tied at 73-73 with 4 minutes left, the Hawks shut down the Mountaineers and shot ahead to score a nice road win. Topping the scoring for the Hawks were: C Geordie Johnson with 17 points, SF Winston Morant with 16 points, and PF Jim Taflinger with 15 points. Coach Mike McMillan said, “Both teams hit over 50% of their shots, but we won it by hard work on the boards and forcing turnovers.”)

Minnesota—76, Western Illinois (4-6)—55 (This ultimately was a case of Western Illinois playing an opponent with too much talent and tools. But the Leathernecks made a game of it throughout the entire first half and for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half. There were 13 lead changes during that 25 minutes of play. The Gophers then exploded offensively and ran away for what turned out to be an easy win. Western Illinois actually outshot Minnesota but lost the game on the boards (-5) and by making 24 turnovers. C Craig Grant with 13 points was the only member of the Leathernecks to score in double figures.)

Conference U

UC-San Diego (7-3)—86, Texas A&M—73 (The first half was a barn-burner with 9 lead changes but the Tritons came on at the very end of the half to take a 44-38 halftime advantage. UC-San Diego went ahead by as much as 9 points in the 2nd half but the Aggies made it close with 8 minutes to go and stayed close until the Tritons completely shut them down for the final 4 minutes and spurted to a huge road victory over a team from a much higher rated conference. UC-San Diego’s starting guards, DeVante Botts and Matt Holcomb scored 23 and 21 points, respectively and combined for 9 assists. PF Brad Sanders scored 13 plus had 7 rebounds and 5 assists and SF Jared Keating had 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists.)

Significant Injuries: None

Awards: None

Comments: Four of the five teams took on opponents from much higher rated conferences and 3 came away with wins, including winning 1 of 2 games against Conference C opponents. Top player on each team thus far: Arkansas-Pine Bluff (C Chris Betts, 14.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg); Western Illinois (C Craig Grant, 12.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg); Alcorn State (SG Andy Carney-14.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.7 spg); MD-Eastern Shore (SF Winston Morant-12.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg); UC-San Diego (SG DeVante Botts-14.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.9 apg, 2.5 spg).

Summary of Games the Week of 1/1/38 to 1/7/38:

Conference R

Alcorn State (6-5)—82, Abilene Christian—55 (PF Marquel Bradley tossed in 26 points for Abilene Christian, but none of the other Wildcats players were effective. The visiting Braves hit 66% of their FG’s and 57% of their 3’s and out-rebounded the Wildcats 30-23. SG Andy Carney was razor sharp from the field and scored 23 points. C Mikko Stallings dropped in 17 points and PF Jared Kraft had 13 points and 7 rebounds.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (9-2)—83, Northern Illinois—65 (It took a few minutes, but the Golden Lions then took the lead and were ahead 50-33 at the half. They expanded their lead to as much as 27 points before surrendering some of their lead with the far end fo the bench playing late in the game. SF Dan Jefferson put in 17 points, PG Albert Taylor and SG Bill Thorton each scored 13 points, reserve guard Jerome King hit for 12 points, and C Chris Betts added 11 points.)

Conference T

UC-Riverside—65, Maryland-Eastern Shore (5-6)—53 (The Hawks jumped out to a lead and held onto it for 7 minutes but then the Highlanders took control and never let it go. SF Winston Morant scored 18 and C Geordie Johnson had 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.)

Western Illinois (5-6)—74, Texas State—63 (This game was in doubt for 34 minutes but after 19 lead changes and 7 ties, the Leathernecks sprinted for the finish line and won going away. Western Illinois outshot Texas State 55% to 35%, but needed it as they lost the battle of the boards and turnovers. SF James Johnson hit for 19 points and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. SG Trent Cougar had 15 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. And PF Orvo Haapajarvi scored a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.)

Conference U

California—66, UC-San Diego (7-4)—48 (The Tritons were simply overmatched in this game. PF Brad Sanders scored 10 points and pulled down 9 boards.)

Significant Injuries: None

Awards: None

Comments: Arkansas-Pine Bluff finished pre-conference play by reeling off their 6th straight victory. All 9 of their wins have been convincing and their 2 losses were to strong teams (Louisiana State and #14 ranked Colorado. The Golden Lions have the 45th best NET Ranking.

Coaches Assess Their Teams As Conference Play Begins (part 1 of 5)

Coach Ramon Montez, Alcorn State Braves

I’d hoped that we’d have a better record in pre-conference play. We’re 6-5 but all 5 losses were on the road. We’re averaging 74.3 ppg while giving up just 67.0 ppg and our NET Ranking is 118th best. We’ve shot well (48% on FG’s and 39% on 3’s) and our APG, RPG, SPG, and BPG are pretty good. Our team chemistry has been excellent. So maybe our being picked to finish 3rd in Conference R could be right. We’re starting 2 freshmen, but our other 3 starters have extensive experience. At PG, freshman Caswell Cook has really taken hold. He’s averaging 8.2 ppg and 5.2 apg and has hit 47% of his FGA’s and 48% of his 3PA’s. SG Andy Carney started for us last season as a freshman and played very well. He’s an even stronger player this season and is averaging 15.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.9 apg, and 1.8 spg and is also shooting well (46% of his FGA’s and 39% of his 3PA’s). Senior Dan Hodge and junior Teremun Harris are very good backups at our guard positions. Harold Hein is a senior and has averaged 7.7 ppg and 4.6 rpg at SF and he’s hitting 45% of his FGA’s although he’s not a 3 point shooter. Junior Jared Kraft is starting at PF and averaging 7.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg and has hit 42% of his FGA’s and 44% of his 3’s. At C we have another freshman, Mikko Stallings, who has been a real surprise by scoring 15.9 ppg and pulling down 5.8 rpg and knocking down 59% of his FGA’s. B.J. Jefferson, LaRon Eldridge, and Rob Daniels are all experienced and have performed adequately coming off the bench at the forward and center positions.

Coaches Assess Their Teams As Conference Play Begins (part 2 of 5)

Mike McMillan, MD-Eastern Shore Hawks

We won 20 games last season and I’m hoping to improve on that this year. I’m not particularly pleased with our 5-6 record thus far this season, but 8 of those games were on the road. We’ve been picked to finish 2nd in Conference T, but to do that, we definitely need to pick up our game. Thus far we’re averaging 63.6 ppg while giving up 63.2 ppg. I think we can do better offensively but we need to shoot better (we’ve only hit 44% of our FG’s and a horrible 24% of our 3’s). We’re starting 3 seniors and 2 juniors, so experience isn’t a problem. Since we aren’t a good outside shooting team, our interior players need to carry us. C Geordie Johnson has done well stepping into a starting role this season. He’s averaging 9.7 ppg and 6.2 rpg and has scored on 54% of his FGA’s. Similarly Jim Taflinger is a starter for the first time this season and has averaged 9.6 ppg and 4.4 rpg. He’s knocked down 62% of his shots, so I’d like to see him get off more shots. At SF is Winston Morant who started as a freshman at Oregon and was a part-time starter for us last season. He’s playing very well, averaging 12.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg while hitting 42% of his FGA’s and 42% of his 3PA’s. Luke Feeley and James Carter are our primary interior reserves and have played pretty well. Lataryl Brown moved from starting at PG to starting at SG this season. He’s hit 46% of his field goals but isn’t a good 3 point shooter. He’s averaging 9.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, and 3.5 apg. At PG we’ve been starting senior Lamarr Ramage. He’s a goo leader on the court, but is only averaging 5.0 ppg and 3.9 apg and has shot poorly thus far. Carl Hancock comes off the bench at PG and freshman Rick Miller has subbed in at SG for us. Marcos Santini is also a reserve who we expected to possibly be our starting SG, but he hasn’t performed well this season so far. I’m hopeful we can become more consistent or we’re going to have a rough time in conference play.

Coaches Assess Their Teams As Conference Play Begins (part 3 of 5)

Terry Morillo, Western Illinois Leathernecks

We are picked to finish on top of Conference T, but haven’t performed up to those expectations thus far. Our pre-conference record was just 5-6, but 6 of those games were on the road and we won just 1 of them. We’ve averaged 67.3 ppg while our opponents have averaged 68.7 ppg. Not much to crow about thus far. We have a very experienced and cohesive team but they have not yet jelled this season. We’ve moved several players into new roles this season. We’re playing sophomore Ty Wilfork who transferred from Valparaiso as a SF to start for us at PG. He’s still learning but is improving there and is averaging 6.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg and 3.6 apg but hasn’t shot well thus far. Freshman Trent Cougar cae in expecting to play PG but we’ve had him starting at SG and he’s doing great, averaging 10.2 ppg, 2.7 rpg, and 2.3 apg while hitting 45% of his FGA’s and 36% of his 3PA’s. Tevis Tahid and Emerson Owens are our primary backups at the guard positions and have played adequately. James Johnson, who started both as a freshman and sophomore, is starting for us at SF and has averaged 10.4 ppg and 4.1 rpg, although his shooting percentages (38% on FG’s and 30% on 3’s) need to improve. Eliran Zaichik is our principal reserve at SF and has played well. Sophomore Orvo Haapajarvi is starting for us at PF and has had some good games and some bad games. He’s averaging 6.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg and has sunk 53% of his FGA’s. At C our starter is senior Craig Grant who has been our rock, averaging 12.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg and hitting 61% of his FGA’s. Zac Johnson and Joe Bergmann are our principal reserves on the interior and both have played pretty well.

Coaches Assess Their Teams As Conference Play Begins (part 4 of 5)

Ken Yamoto, UC-San Diego Tritons

We’re picked to finish 4th in Conference U. Not bad, but I really want to finish higher. We’re 7-4 after completely pre-conference play. We began the year with 5 straight wins but have been inconsistent since. We’ve outscored our opponents 70.8 ppg to 67.5 ppg. Overall our team stats are pretty much middle of the pack. We don’t have the highest level of talent on our team, but the guys have pulled together and team chemistry is very good. We’re starting 3 sophomores and 2 juniors. Matt Holcomb didn’t play much for us as a freshman but have stepped up and won the starting job at PG. He’s hit 45% of his FGA’s, 39% of his 3PA’s and 96% of his FTA’s. He’s averaging 16.3 ppg and 4.2 apg. At SG we have DeVante Botts, who started as a freshman at James Madison, and is averaging 14.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg for us this season. Best of all he’s knocked down 52% of his FGA’s, 40% of his 3PA’s, and 89% of his FTA’s. James Keating is starting at SF for us and averaging 8.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, and 2.5 apg, but he’s only made 35% of his FG’s and 28% of his 3’s. Junior Brad Sanders is starting for the 2nd straight year at PF. He’s averaging 9.9 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Camara McWilliams, who transferred from Eastern Washington, is starting at C. He’s averaging 7.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg and hitting 51% of his FGA’s. Jeremiah Mason, Michael Faulkner, and Matt Johnson are our principal reserves at the forward and center positions. They’re all playing satisfactorily, particularly Mason who is averaging 7.0 ppg and 3.6 rpg.

Coaches Assess Their Teams As Conference Play Begins (part 5 of 5)

Dontell Spencer, Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions

The media has picked us to finish in 1st place in Conference R. We played very well in pre-conference play, finishing with a 9-2 record, the 45th best NET Ranking. We’ve scored 79.3 ppg (15th highest) and allowed our opponents to score 68.0 ppg. The team’s shot very well, hitting 48% of our FGA’s and 40% of our 3PA’s. Albert Taylor transferred from Cal State Northridge where he started as a freshman and he’s starting at PG for us, averaging 11.5 ppg and 4.5 apg while knocking down 48% of his FGA’s and 48% of his 3PA’s. At SG we have junior Bill Thorton who started as a freshman at Florida Gulf Coast and then as a sophomore for us. He’s scoring 13.7 ppg and averaging 4.7 rpg and 2.8 apg. He has put in 51% of his FGA’s and 42% of his 3PA’s. Dan Jefferson starts for the 4th straight year for us at SF. He’s hitting 43% of his FG’s and 41% of his 3PA’s and is averaging 13.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.8 apg. Senior Andrew Richardson won the starting role at PF and is averaging 6.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg, and 4.4 apg and has made 44% of his FGA’s and 62% of his 3’s. Chris Betts is also a 4th year starter for us at C. He’s averaging 14.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg and has converted 55% of his FGA’s. I’ve been playing a pretty short bench. Jerome King has been our 6th man and is averaging 6.3 ppg at SF and SG. Derron O’Quin has been our primary interior reserve and Eric McColpin has been subbing at PG. I can’t be sure we’ll finish 1st in the conference, but I like our chances at gaining another promotion.

Re: READY FOR PRIME TIME?

Postby PointGuard » Fri Aug 19, 2022 2:58 pm

Why, Oh Why ?????

Some may wonder why……

1. Coach Ken Yamoto of the UC-San Diego Tritons doesn’t play sophomore Jeremiah Mason more. Mason is averaging 7.0 ppg and 3.6 rpg while playing just 15.1 mpg. Mason is primarily a PF but can (and is) coming in at both PF and SF. Both PF Brad Sanders and SF Jared Keating are playing twice as many minutes with Sanders averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.7 rpg and Keating averaging 8.6 ppg and 2.9 rpg. Mason hits about the same percentage of shots as Sanders but hits a much higher percentage of his shots than Keating.
2. Coach Yamoto isn’t playing senior PF Michael Faulkner more than 8.2 mpg. Faulkner is hitting 53% of his FGA’s and 64% of his 3PA’s…much better that starting PF Jared Keating and Faulkner is a stronger rebounder and defender than Keating.
3. Coach Yamoto doesn’t play redshirt freshman C Joe McCray more than 4.2 mpg. After redshirting last season, McCray’s skills have significantly skilled even though he still has some rough edges, but he’s hitting 60% of his FG’s including 50% of his 3PA’s…much better than starting PF Brad Sanders.
4. Coach Mike McMillan of the MD-Eastern Shore Hawks isn’t playing sophomore PG Carl Hancock more than 11.0 mpg. Hancock is hitting a higher percentage of his FG’s and FT’s that starting PG LaMarr Ramage and has scored 3.9 ppg while Ramage is only averaging 5.0 ppg while playing nearly 3 times as many minutes. Hancock is also rebounding a little better than Ramage.
5. Coach Ramon Montez of the Alcorn State Braves is playing junior PG Teremun Harris just 5.4 mpg. Harris was a fulltime starter in his freshman year at Tennessee-Martin and averaged 12.7 ppg. As a sophomore for Alcorn State, he came off the bench to play 12.4 mpg and average 6.0 ppg. This season he’s averaging 3.1 ppg but seeing very little action. He shoots about as well as starting freshman PG Caswell Cook and while Cook gets a few more assists, Montez is a better rebounder and ball-hawk.
6. Coach Montez is playing junior PF B.J. Jefferson so much (21.6 mpg). Jefferson isn’t shooting well (35% of his FG’s and 47% of his FT’s) and is only averaging 5.5 ppg.
7. Coach Montez plays PF/C Laron Eldridge just 10.5 ppg. Eldridge played twice as much as a freshman at Lehigh and hit 61% of his FG's. As a sophomore at Alcorn State he only played 8.5 mpg but hit 60% of his FG’s. Many feel he has some very high overall skill levels and should possibly be starting in place of Kraft at PF.
8. Coach Terry Morillo of the Western Illinois Leathernecks is playing PG/SG Emerson Owens just 7.8 mpg. As a freshman at Grambling, Owens played 18.4 mpg and averaged 8.3 ppg. As a sophomore for the Leathernecks he played just 8.5 mpg and then as a junior became invisible on the far end of the bench. Owens is hitting 57% of his 3’s and is averaging 3.9 ppg this season.
9. Coach Morillo has only played SF Eliran Zaichik just 7.8 mpg. Zaichik is hitting 53% of his FG’s and outshooting starting SF Ty Wilfork and is averaging 4.6 ppg compared to Wilfork’s 10.4 ppg even though Wilfork is playing 3-1/2 times as many minutes. Zaichik also has better rebounding, stealing and blocking stats than Wilfork.
10. Coach Morillo is not playing Joe Bergmann and Idris Bass more at PF. Bergmann is averaging 5.6 ppg while playing just 10.9 mpg while starting PF Orvo Haapajarvi is averaging 6.5 ppg while playing 27.0 mpg. Bass played 13.4 mpg and averaged 5.4 ppg and 2.4 rpg as a freshman at Alabama State, but has only gotten into 5 games during which he’s played 2.0 mpg. Both Bass and Bergmann are thought by many to possess overall skill levels that far exceed Haapajarvi.
11. Dontell Spencer of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions is playing senior PG Eric McColpin only 4.5 mpg while he is a natural PG and better passer and ball handler than sophomore Albert Taylor who is a natural SG.
12. Coach Spencer isn’t playing sophomore Trent Harris more. Harris transferred from Niagara and is playing more than he did as a freshman, but just 13.0 mpg and all those at C. Harris would seem to have more interior skills than Andrew Richardson who has been starting at PF even though he’s a natural SF. Although Harris is playing less that half as much as Richardson, he’s averaging 6.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg while Richardson is averaging 6.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg.

Summary of Games the Week of 1/8/38 to 1/14/38:

Conference R

VMI—65, Alcorn State (6-6, 0-1)—63 (Neither team could gain a big lead. The Braves led by a scant point at the half. The first 11 minutes of the 2nd half were extremely close, but then Alcorn State had a run that put them up by 8 with 4 minutes to go. VMI’s home crowd wouldn’t let the Keydets concede though and propelled them to a last second win. C Mikko Stallings had 21 points and 12 boards. PF Jared Kraft and SG Andy Carney had 11 and 10 points, respectively. But VMI’s PG Bruce Grandison scored 22 points to lead the VMI’s to victory.)

C Chris Betts scored 15 points.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-2, 2-0)—79, Cornell—70 (Cornell’s home fans pushed the Big Red to a 33-31 halftime advantage and kept them ahead for 6 minutes in the 2nd half. But the Golden Lions then exerted control and pulled awy to record a nice road victory. SG Bill Thorton sank 13 of 18 FG’s and had a huge game by scoring 35 points. C Chris Betts had 14 points and 8 rebounds and reserve guard Jerome King scored 12 points.)

Conference T

Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-6, 1-0)—73, Seattle—68 (This was a nailbiter with 19 lead changes and 9 ties. The Hawks led by 5 at the end of the first half. But the Redhawks worked their way back into he lead in the 2nd half and then it went back and forth for several minutes. The Hawks finally took the lead and gamely held off Seattle for a big road win. SF Winston Morant scored 20, PF Jim Taflinger and Lamarr Ramage both scored 11, and SG Lataryl Brown added 10.

Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-6, 2-0)—84, Hampton—62 (There were 5 lead changes in the first 7 minutes but from thereon it was all MD Eastern Shore as they expanded their lead all the way until the end of the game. SF Winston Morant put in another 20 points plus had 6 rebounds and 4 assists. C Geordie Johnson scored 13 points and reserve guard Rick Miller scored 11 points in his 11 minutes on the court.)

Western Illinois (6-6, 1-0)—65, Charleston Southern—57 (The Leathernecks trailed for the first 9 minutes and then the game seesawed for 4 minutes. But then Western Illinois took command and by the end of the half led 35-30. They held the Buccaneers scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half to go up by 12 and then their offense exploded to expand the lead to 21. They then coasted to an easy victory led by C Craig Grant’s 22 points and 8 rebounds and with PG Ty Wilfork getting 13 points, 3 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks.)

Western Illinois (7-6, 2-0)—78, UC Davis—57 (Western Illinois played as if they were on their own court, hitting 58% of their FG’s and gaining advantages of 30-23 in rebounding and 19-17 in turnovers. They gained the lead early and ran away from the Aggies. SF James Johnson scored 16 points, PF Orvo Haapavari tossed in 12 points and reserve forward Joe Bergmann had 11 poitns and 7 boards.)

Conference U

UC-San Diego (8-4, 1-0)—64, Howard—57 (The game was very close the first 4 minutes with 5 lead changes, but then the Tritons took a small lead and while they never were far ahead, held onto the lead all the way to the end of the game. Awards: SG Bill Thorton of Arkansas Pine Bluff was the Conference R Player of the Week. Alcorn State’s C Mikko Stallings was the Conference R Freshman Player of the Week.

Comments: Great starting week in conference play for the 5 coaches as they recorded a 9-1 combined record. Particularly impressive this week was SG Bill Thorton who scored 59 points for the Arkansas Pine Bluff to lead the Golden Lions to two lopsided wins. His scoring outburst improved his season scoring average to 16.2 ppg. In his previous 2 seasons Thorton averaged 15.4 ppg as a freshman at Florida Gulf Coast and 14.4 ppg as a sophomore at Arkansas Pine Bluff. He hit 46% and 45% of his FGA’s in those two seasons, but is popping in an impressive 55% of his FG’s this year.

Summary of Games the Week of 1/15/38 to 1/21/38:

Conference R

Alcorn State (8-6, 2-1)—81, Bryant—70 (Bryant played tough for most of the first half during which there were 8 lead changes. But the Braves put on a spurt in the final minutes to give them a 41-33 halftime advantage. Alcorn State then opened as much as a 22 point lead before Bryant put on a late run that halved that difference, but there wasn’t enough time, even with their home fans’ encouragement, to truly get close. SG Andy Carney scored 23 while teammates PF Jared Kraft had 12 points and 8 boards and C Mikko Stallings and reserve forward Laron Eldridge each scored 10 points.)

Omaha—68, Alcorn State (8-7, 2-2)—62 (“Lackluster play by us! Omaha is a good team, but to only hit 32% of our shots and let our opponent out-rebound us 43-32 is inexcusable at home,” complained Coach Ramon Montez. The Braves stayed close the entire game but held just two 2-point leads. Scoring in double figures for Alcorn State were: C Mikko Stallings and PF Jared Kraft both scoring 14 and SG Andy Carney adding 13.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12-2, 3-0)—86, Jacksonville—81 (The Golden Lions led for the majority of the first 28 minutes of the game, but Jacksonville roared to life a that point and drove to as much as an 8 point lead before Arkansas Pine Bluff gathered steam and edged back ahead to gain the victory. There were 13 lead changes in the game. “We didn’t shoot all that well, but we did a fantastic job of holding onto the ball and made just 5 turnovers. That was critical to our winning since the Dolphins got to the line 12 more times and scored 9 more points there than we did,” said Coach Dontell Spencer. C Chris Betts poured in 23 points and reserve forward Derron O’Quin put in 13 points in just 8 minutes of play.)
\
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (13-2, 4-0)—81, Stetson—61 (Arkansas Pine Bluff jumped out to a lead and then continually increased the lead throughout the game. The Golden Lions outshot the Hatters 51% to 35%. High point man was SG Bill Thorton with 17 points. He was followed by SF Dan Jefferson’s 13 points and C Trent Harris’ 10 points.)

Conference T

Canisius—63, Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-7, 2-1)—55 (The Hawks kept the game close throughout the first half during which there were 7 lead changes, but fell behind by a score of 33-27 at the break. But the Golden Griffins pulled away in the 2nd half, leading by as much as 18 points before saddling MD Eastern Shore with the 8 point loss. SG Lataryl Brown and C Geordie Johnson both scored 11 points with Johnson pulling down 8 rebounds.)

Maryland-Eastern Shore (8-7, 3-1)—75, Eastern Illinois—54 (The Hawks’ defense led to what turned out to be a very easy win. Key to that was forcing the Panthers to make 22 turnovers. Except for trailing 2-0, MD-Eastern Shore was on the top the entire way. SF Winston Morant tossed in 18 points, PG Lamarr Ramage scored 12, and SG Lataryl Brown put in 10 points.)

Western Illinois (8-6, 3-0)—78, Grambling—71 (The Leathernecks overcame the stubborn Tigers and their homecourt crowd. The game was exceptionally close throughout the first half with Western Illinois coming out of it with a narrow 47-46 lead. But Western Illinois clamped down defensively in the 2nd half and gradually pulled away. The Leathernecks lead grew to 13 points midway through the 2nd half. Grambling fought back to narrow the gap to 4 oints with 3:30 to go, but Western Illinois, led by C Craig Grant’s 21 points, would let them get no closer. SF James Johnson and PG Ty Wilfork both scored 14 points and Wilfork had 8 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.)

Western Illinois (9-6, 4-0)—75, Prairie View—67 (Midway through the first half Western Illinois led by 10 but Prairie View closed to within 2 points at the end of the half. The game remained very close in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd half, but the Leathernecks ground down the Panthers to move out to a 16 point lead with 4 minutes remaining and then held on to score a satisfying road win. Topping their scoring was SF James Johnson with 18 points with C Craig Grant scoring 12 and grabbing 7 boards. “We offset good scoring by the Panthers’ guard with a strong interior presence,” said Coach Terry Morillo.)

Conference U

UC-San Diego (10-4, 3-0)—66, Presbyterian—51 (“I always worry about road games, but my guys took helped alleviate by concerns quickly tonight,” said Coach Ken Yamoto. “Matt Holcomb was on fire in the first half and propelled us to a 40-25 halftime advantage, and we then made it a defensive battle in the 2nd half which kept the Blue Hose from catching up.” PG Matt Holcomb finished the game with 22 points and SF Jared Keating added 10 points, while PF Brad Sanders and SG DeVante Botts both hauled down 10 rebounds.)

UC-San Diego (11-4, 4-0)—65, Maine—63 (There was no more than a razor-thin edge between the two teams throughout the first half with the Tritons escaping with a 3 point lead. A very stingy defense in the early going of the 2nd half allowed UC San Diego to move out to a 16 point lead. But Maine came back late in the half and actually went ahead with 3 minutes left. The lead then shifted back and forth with the Tritons thrilling their home fans when Jeremiah Mason canned a 3 with 2 seconds left and then keeping the Bears from getting off a buzzer-beater prayer. A trio of players (SG DeVante Botts, SF Jared Keating, and reserve forward Jeremiah Mason) each scored 16 points with Botts and Mason making 5 and 4 steals, respectively.)

Significant Injuries: SG DeVante Botts of UC-San Diego experience back spasms and his back strain is expected to take at least 2 weeks to resolve. MD-Eastern Shore’s reserve C Shawn Wilson suffered an ankle sprain early the past week and will likely miss their next game. SG Albert Taylor of Arkansas Pine Bluff has the flu and may miss the Golden Lions next game.

Awards: None.

Comments: Western Illinois now sports a 10 game win streak. The Golden Lions have averaged 79 ppg to their opponents 67 ppg this season. Western Illinois has won 5 straight games and UC San Diego has won their last 4 games.
