1/3: Just as an experiment I’m going to sim the first 9 games of the conf. season. Let’s see what happens!

2/1: 8-1. Close games at Kennesaw ST, 1 3 point loss, and Central Ark., a 2 point win. All of the others were blowouts.

17-4, 8-1, alone in 1st in conf. The three guard set up seems to be working well.

All recruits hit our SAT score.

Let’s sim the other 9:

3/5: 26-4, 17-1, ranked #24, NET #23.

We win the conf. by 4 over Central Ark., 7 or more over the rest.

#1 in PPG with 93.9, +21.7. +4.6 RBs, +4.8 assists, +4.8 steals. -8.0 TOs, 8.9 per game, #1 in the country. St in threes attempted and made, 46th in %. 29th in overall shooting %.

Lead gets 15.2, 6.2 RBs. Hart gets 15.2, leads with 8.1 RBs. Huck gets 13.0. Robb gets 11.4, 4.2 assists. Nabo leads with 5.4 assists.

3/7: We start the Atl. Sun tourney tonight vs. #9 seed Jacksonville, 10-20, 7-11. We beat them by 19 and 15.

I’m back to playing games out.

We score the first 17. Up 20 after 10. 43-31 as they come back a little. 11, 4 for Lead, 12 for Huck.

Up 24 with 10 to play.

89-65. 20, 10 for Hart, 16, 6 for Lead, 18 for Huck on 6 threes, 11, 3, 5 for Robb. Easy win.

It’s #12 seed Jacksonville ST, 14-18, 7-11, in the semis. They have upset 2 teams to get here. We won by 16 there.

3/8: Early lead but we’re sluggish. Up 5 after 10. Then a big run. 52-27 at the break. Balanced scoring, 12-24 on threes. Terrific D, 28%. Good inside play.

This is a real blowout. Up 29 with 10 to go.

101-61. 16, 3, 5 for Nabo, 19, 4, 3 for Robb, 11, 10, 3 for Hart. Good bench play.

#2 seed Central Arkansas, 21-10, 13-5. In the title game. They have some injuries, but everyone will play. We won by o0nly 2 there in a real battle! That has been a motivator in practice.

3/9: Close early on. Up 4 after 10. Then a run. 45-33 at the half. 11, 8 for Hart, 10 for Days. +15 for the bench. Both teams are shooting poorly.

Holding our lead early. Up 20 with 10 to play.

89-62 and the title. 24, 16 for Hart, the tourney MOP. 12 for Dyas, 10 each for Robb and Huck. +28 in the paint.

On to the big dance and hoping for a good seed!

3/12: #6 South. We play #11 Miami (FL), 21-12. They look good. VERY good PF.

3/17: Quick lead. They come back. Tied after 10. 51-47. A real battle in the 1st. 13 for Robb but 3 fouls for Lead. We’re getting beat badly inside. 11 threes help. We’re containing their PF but their SG is going wild (15).

Good start to the 2nd. Up 14 with 10 to play.

120-93 and the title! 28, 5 Huck, 19, 1, 4, 16 for Robb, 11, 6 for Hart. We did better inside in the 2nd half. 26 threes. 11 assists for Nabo.

We’re now #20.

#3 seed, #9 ranked Michigan ST, 26-8. Their PF is out with a torn knee tendon. They’re very good, especially at SG, SF, and C.

It would be nice to hit the Sweet Sixteen but it won’t be easy.

3/19: Close early. Down 1 after 10. They go on a run but we come back. 45-50 at halftime. 23, 6 for Lead. Nabo has 3 fouls. They’re beating us inside.

We tie it early and it stays close. Down 6 with 10 to play.

80-88. They were the better team. 37, 7 for Lead but it wasn’t enough. 13, 5, 4 blocks for Robb. -10 from the line and they shot much better. 18 threes helped. They really beat us up inside.

4/9: I will move if an elite school offers.

Nope.

4/23: I ask for $.

No.

We’re losing Robb, Huck, Brad, and Gayn.

30-5, conf. champs. Overall, for 17 seasons I’m 459-96, .827.

5/1: Recruit class #33. We move to Conf USA, a much better conference!

5/29: No one transfers out.

Suffering in the heat as usual. I’m ready to move to a new school!

6/25: We’ll go to the Memphis camp again.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We need 3 bigs.

7/14: 107 degrees today. I was outdoors twice- to get into my car and drive to work, and to get into my car and drive home. I brought my lunch. Usually I eat in the caf but I didn’t want to walk there in the heat.

8/14: Considering switching off of one guy and onto another. Let’s see what another week or two brings…

9/11: We lose 2 bigs. Probably going to lose another big. The PG looks like a lock.

9/18: No losses but we didn’t land anyone.

Going to the Cabo Challenge. Pretty tough schedule.

9/25: We lose 2 more bigs and don’t land the PG. He still has us at #1. I don’t get it. Maybe he can’t hit our SAT score, his GPA is 2.4. WAIT! He’s a juco. Hm…

10/2: We lose all 3 bigs we offered to. Screw it, one more attempt. If that doesn’t work I’ll wait for transfers. Still nothing with the PG. Maybe I’ll look for another one.

1st day of practice. I’m heavily leaning toward going with the three guard set again. Maybe going with 2 guards against teams that are strong inside.

10/9: The PG finally says yes. One of the bigs says no. The PG is terrific, #42, so I’m happy to get him.

10/23: We get a PF, #136.

11/13: We start tomorrow. Here’s the lineup:

4 guys will get most of the time at the three guard spots. Senior Chap Nabo starts at PG. He started last season.

Soph Vefa Yaki is at SG. We think he’s ready.

Frosh Jess More is at SF. He’s looked really good in practice.

#4 guard is junior Alan Days, who wants to start. I told him to earn it.

#5 guard is frosh Fabi Alka, from Russia. He can play. Last guard is frosh Gar Stow. He, too, can play. We’re very strong outside!

Senior Dan Lead is at PF. He is a real scorer and he got 6.1 boards last year.

Jay Hart is at C. He’s our best defender and best rebounder, and he scores!

1st big off the bench is soph Bony Gray, who is definitely ready to contribute. Frosh Dal Star is next. He looks good but hasn’t reached his peak yet. Finally it’s soph Joe Cham. He’s a good rebounder but the rest of his game needs work.

Re: 2023: 3s and Put Backs

Postby Wayne23 » Thu Mar 23, 2023 4:42 pm

11/14: We start tonight with Northern Iowa here.

Slow start. Up 1 after 10. We haven’t found our rhythm yet. 51-45 at halftime. Balanced scoring. Good inside play.

Our first run comes early in the 2nd. Up 17 with 10 to go. Feels like we’ve got this.

108-84. 21, 2, 6 for Yaki, 21, 6 for More, 16, 7 for Hart, 15, 3, 4 for Nabo. Both Lead and More had a lot of trouble with fouls. 18 threes.

At Colorado ST next. It’s there first game so we don’t know much.

11/17: We start slow again. Up 4 after 10. 47-44 at the half. Lousy D and poor shooting. Too many fouls, Lead has 3 and I let him know I’m not happy. 16 for Yaki, 10, 9 for Hart.

Down 1 with 10 to go and I don’t like what I see!

76-70. We just haven’t jelled yet. 31.5% shooting. More fouled out. Outplayed in the paint. 17, 15 for Hart, 19 for Yaki 12 for More. I need more from the bench and better shooting and inside play.

Better shooting is always about freeing guys up for open looks, which we aren’t doing.

Off to the Cabo Challenge where we’re the #8 seed. We face #1 seed Texas A & M, 2-0. Decent field in this tourney.

11/21: We fall behind quickly. We come back. Up 7 after 10. 49-48. The D is just awful again. I may need to shake up the lineup if this continues. They shot 50%. 3 fouls for Hart.

We start fast. They catch up. We can’t seem to sustain anything. Down 4 with 10 left. Still back and forth.

94-92. Whew! 2 threes and 2 from the line very late saved us but I am far from happy. 23, 5, 3 for More, 14, 7 for Lead, 13, 6 for Hart, 14 for Gray, 10 assists for Nabo.

The staff and I decide to hold off on making changes. Maybe they just need a little more time to play well together. Not sure how patient I’ll be though.

All the other top seeds won so we face #4 Washington ST, 3-0. Their PG is hurt but he’ll start. They look tough inside but I’m staying with the three guard set.

11/22: Close early again. Up 2 after 10. A late run gives us a 51-35 lead at the break. 13, 1, 3 for Yaki. Hart has 3 fouls. The D is much better tonight, they’re shooting 31.3%.

We’re expanding the lead early on. Up 15 with 10 to go.

97-78. 18, 9 for Lead, 18, 2, 4, 4 for Yaki, who has looked really good so far. 17, 6, 3 for More, 12, 9 for Gray, 9, 10 for Hart. Alan Days is playing well, 9, 6, 5 tonight. 20 threes.

It’s #3 seed Houston, 4-0, for the title. They have looked really good, solid at every position.

11/23: Fast start for the first time this season. Up 5 after 10 as we let them back in. It’s staying close. 43-43 at halftime. Their forwards are killing us. 13 for Lead. They’re shooting 63.6%, which is outrageous! I make a lot of noise at halftime! We’re being embarrassed in the paint.

Good start to the 2nd. We’re turning them over. Up 14 with 10 to play.

100-69. Very good 2nd half, 57-26. That’s what I’ve been waiting for! 20, 9, 2, 3 for Lead, 21, 3 for Yaki, 13, 11 for Gray, 15, 6 for Hart.

On the plane the staff discusses where we are and where we’re going. We’re going to Penn ST but that’s not what I mean.

We’re 5-0. Bony Gray is getting some of Alan Days’ minutes. Alan will not be happy!

I’m going to sim the rest of the pre-conf schedule, 8 games. I’ll do 4 and then report in, then the other 4.

12/6: 4 wins, closest was by 10.

We look at the lineup again. We like what we see and we’re better with Gray in there. We debate going to the traditional two guard set, at least for a few more minutes a game. We decide to give a few more of Days’ minutes to Gray.

We jump all the way to #11 in the rankings! We’re 9-0, NET #2, which is ridiculously inflated.

We’re still recruiting hard.

4 more pre-conf games, all away.

1/1/2028: Tough road trip, 2-2. We won at UMass by only 1, Auburn, our non-conf rival, beat us up, 82-99, then we won by 5 at Missouri ST. In our latest game we lost 81-82 at Georgia on a last second half court heave. Tough way to lose!

We fell out of the top 25.

11-2 at the end of pre-conf play.

#1 in PPG with 91.4, +10.9. Up only 0.2 RBs. +1.3 assists. +4.4 steals. -6.8 TOs, 9.4 per game.

Hart leads us with 15.8 points, is 2nd in RBs with 7.2. Lead is 2nd in points with 13.4, 1st in RBs with 7.3. 12.8 and 4.1 assists for Yaki. 11.6, 4.0, 3.5 for More. Sub Bony Gray gets 10.9, 5.1 RBs.

We decide to stick with the current rotation.

On to Conf-USA play! We’ll sim the games, 4 at a time.

1/15: We start conf play with 4 wins. All easy wins.

Lead hurt his shoulder out for a week to 10 days. Gray will start.

1/24: We win the next 4, 3 with Lead out hurt. Gray did great!

19-2, 8-0, back in the rankings at #20. #4 NET.

5 players averaging 11 or more. Gray is #3 in only 23.1 minutes per game.

Still 1st in PPG.

We grab a 2nd guard, #174. Chasing a PF.

2/2: Yaki sprains his wrist. Out for at least a week. Days will start.

2/7: Nabo strains a calf. Out for at least a week.

2/14: 23-2, 12-0. #7 ranked, #4 NET, 1st in Conf USA, up by 2 over Western KY, 5 or more over the rest.

Still #1 in PPG, +15.6. Rest of the stats haven’t changed much.

2/21: 3 more wins. We’re 26-2, 15-0, #6, NET #4. Up 3 on 2nd place. We joined Conf USA because its Conf. Prestige was more than twice what the Atl. Sun was. If we’re here next year we’ll move to an even better conf.!

3/5: We end the regular season perfect in conference, 29-2, 18-0. We win the conf. by 6 games! #5 ranked, NET #3.

1st in PPG with 88.7, +17.1. +5.4 RBs, +3.9 assists, +4 steals, -4.8 TOs.

15.2, 7.9 RBs for Hart, who leads us in both. 14.3, 7.2 for Lead. 12.5, 6.4 for Gray. 11.0, 4.5, 3.4 for More.

On to the post season!
