2023: 3s and Put Backs

Re: 2023: 3s and Put Backs

11/14: 85-65. We haven’t fully jelled yet and we’re still working on our sub pattern. We took an early lead and never let it go. 12, 14, 3, 1, 5 blocks for Redd, 15, 4, 6 for Hort, 15, 6 for Monn, 12, 5 for Prin, 8, 6, 7 for Winn. We owned the paint. 9-31 on threes. Last season we won it all despite the three point strategy not because of it. We’ll see if we shoot the three better this season.

#9 seed Dayton, 1-0, in the quarter finals.

11/16: We take the lead right away and expand it. Up 12 after 10. 54-37 at halftime. Not happy with the D but everything else looked good. 13, 7 for Redd, 13, 2, 3 for Kell.

Holding the lead. Up 23 with 10 to go.

103-87. 24, 14 for Redd; again, I have no idea why he’s not on the Norton list. 19, 12 for Loux, 11, 1, 3, 6 for Hort but 7 TOs; we spoke about it. 13, 2, 5 for Kell, 16 for Monn.

#4 seed, #2 ranked Wisconsin, 2-0, in the semifinals. They can play especially on D, but I’m not sure they can score enough points to keep up with us. Interesting to have #1 vs. #2 this early in the season!

11/18: We take the lead right away. They come back. Up 1 after 10. A late run puts us up 55-38 at the half. 25, 3 for Hort, who is on fire; 7 threes. We’re winning the battle inside and holding them to 32.4%. Monn has 3 fouls.

We get the lead to 20 then they come back some. Up 20 after 10 as we answer.

96-81. A comfortable win over #2! 34, 5, 5, 3 blocks for Hort, 14, 13 for Loux, 11, 7, 10 for Winn, 16, 4 for Prin.

I’m thinking of switching Winn to PG and Hort to SG. Not ready to do it yet though.

It’s #2 seed, #3 ranked Gonzaga, 3-0, in the title game. We had a war in the national championship game last season. They have a very good SG, but so do we!

Interestingly enough, Gonzaga is at our place in the first game after this tourney.

Unbelievably, we fall to #2 in the polls. Makes no sense!

11/20: Fast start for both teams. Up 6 after 10. Then we go on a run. They come back. We answer. 54-46 in a very fast paced first half. 11, 2, 6 for Hort, 11 each for Loux, Brow, and Kell. Winn has 3 fouls. +16 in the paint. Redd committed 2 fouls in the first 2 minutes and sat for the rest of the half.

It’s a battle early in the 2nd. Up 5 with 10 to play. Then we go on a big run.

108-82 and the title. 22, 6, 10, 3 for Hort, 24, 4 for Kell, who is looking terrific. 13, 11 for Loux, 15, 5 for Prin, 11 each for Monn and Brow. Redd was never a factor and we still crushed them!

A rematch with Gonzaga at our place is next.

11/23: Early lead but it’s close. Up 7 after 10. 48-34 at the break. 17, 1, 2, 3 for Hort, who is really coming into his own. Foul trouble for Redd again. I talk to him.

We’re coasting. Up 11 with 10 to go.

95-85 but that was as close as they got. 26, 2, 5, 3 for Hort, 20, 5 for Prin, 10, 8, 4 for Redd, who had no fouls in the 2nd half.

2-1 Iona is here. Good outside game.

11/26: Quick lead. Up 14 after 10. 53-26 at halftime. 17, 11 for Redd, 9, 2, 5 for Hort, 12 for Monn. Big edge inside.

Up 44 with 10 left. Subs are in.

122-64, a real slaughter. 17, 11 for Redd, 18, 2, 8 for Hort. 20 for Morn, 16 for Hend. We have 5 excellent guards.

At #4 Stanford, 6-0. They’re solid at all 5 positions but they don’t have our bench- no one does.

We’re back at #1 where we belong!

11/30: They score the first 14! We come back. Down 6 after 10. 31-38. We’re shooting 19.6%, 1-27 on threes, and we’re not out of the game. 3 fouls for Redd.

“Get open!”

Not looking good early. We come roaring back! Up 1 with 10 to play.

81-72. A monster come back, we were down 15 in the 2nd half. 18, 16 for Loux, 12, 2, 8, 3 for Winn, 14, 7, 3, 4 for Monn. 22 2nd chance points and very good inside play.

“I’m proud of you for never giving up. This was a great win!”

3-2 North Carolina is here. They’re rebuilding this season.

12/3: Sluggish start. Up 8 but we’re still not ourselves. Then a big run and we’re okay. 52-24. Exceptional D! 17, 2, 4 for Hort, 6, 14 for Redd.

Holding our lead. Up 26 with 10 to go.

89-52. 29, 3, 5 for Hort, 10, 8 for Prin, 6, 15 for Redd. +29 RBs! Held them under 30%.

We’re 8-0, #1, NET #1, halfway through the pre-conf sched.

#1 in PPG, +23.9. #1 in RBs, +8.6. #4 in assists, +7. +4.8 steals. -6.4 TOs, 8.5 per game.

Hort leads us with 19.9 PPG and gets 5.9 assists. 12.6, 5.1 RBs for Prin. 11.5 for Monn our “6th starter.” 10.8, 10.4 for both Loux and Redd. 9.6 for Kell. 7.1 assists for Winn. I’m switching him and Hort. SG gets more scoring opportunities.

At #12 ST Mary, 5-1, next.

They retake the lead and it’s back and forth. Up 7 with 10 to go. Very close late!

89-90, and the win streak ends at 48. We missed an open 17 footer at the end. 19, 5, 8 for Hort, 19, 6 for Prin, 24, 3 for Monn,13, 4, 9, 3 for Winn, , 8, 14, 4 blocks for Redd. They’re really good And they earned the win.

2/2: 4 easy wins. Redd and Hort played exceptionally well in all 4 games. 23-1, 8-0. Halfway through conf play we’re alone in 1st in the Big 12, 1 up on #15 Anal Roberts and Oklahoma, who we beat easily.

Hort is #2 on the Norton list.

Still #1 in PPG, RBs, Assists, and Blocks. Shooting 34.9% on threes. Hort is up to 20.5 PPG. Redd is up to 12.8 RBs. Winn gets 7.7 assists.

Going to sim 2, then play out the Anal Roberts game.

Going after some “just in case” recruits. No way to know who will leave early for the pros.
