DDSCB25: Superstar

4/4: Awards. Dave Pabe is a 1st team All American. Norm Brid makes the 2nd team. I am national COY. In the ACC Pabe is POY and 1st team. Brid is Def. POY and 1st team. I am
Conf. COY.

4/23: And yet again I ask for a facilities upgrade.

Still no. Extremely frustrating.

38-2. We made it to the title game. For 17 seasons I’m 508-121, .808.

“Are you disappointed about the title game?”

“Sure, Von, but they were the better team again this year. Hopefully next season.”

5/1: Preseason #1. #6 recruiting class.

5/22: Nobody is transferring. We have 3 open spots. We want a guard and 2 bigs.

5/26: 0-3. Try again…

5/29: 0-3 again. So frustrating.

6/2: We get a guard and a big. Both may start.

6/5: 0-1.

6/9: 0-1. We’re done.

6/25: Going to Indy and all the regional camps.

6/26: 1st day of recruiting. We need 4 bigs.

7/17: We offer to 4 big guys.

8/7: 4 on the Norton list: Pabe is #3, Brid #4, C Hal Hold is #6, and F Don Drye is #8.

9/11: We get 2, lose 2.

9/18: We get the other 2 bigs.

Tough pre-conf sched.

10/2: 1st day of practice. This team is very strong and very deep.

11/11: Here’s the lineup:

Soph Bert Thai, a transfer from Columbia, is at the Point. He has looked really good so far.

Junior Dave Pabe is back at SG.

#3 guard is Senior Casy Tone. Next is frosh Jon Huge. Soph Dan Ramm, a transfer from Washington St, needs work.

Frosh Hal Hold is at SF. He looks like a budding superstar.

Senior Don Drye is back at PF.

Junior Norm Brid is back at C.

1st big guy off the bench is senior Tom Geer who started for us last season. We don’t lose anything when he checks in. Frosh Tom Shin is a good rebounder and scorer. Soph Max Jack started for Creighton last season. He can play.

11/13: We start tomorrow at the NIT Preseason Tipoff. We’re the #1 seed and play #16 seed Drexel. There are some really good teams here.

11/14: 78-47. We held them to 16 in the first half. 23, 10, 4 for Pabe, 14, 11 for Brid, 12, 5 for 6th man Tom Geer.

#9 seed Murray ST is next.

11/16: 77-62. We led all the way. 21, 6, 3, 4 for Pabe, 12, 13, 3 blocks for Brid, 15, 3 for Drye.

Don Drye fractured his arm. He’s out for up to 2 months. Tom Geer will start.

#5 seed Marquette, #16 ranked, 2-0, in the semifinals.

11/18: 80-65. We took the lead early and built it to 20. We never trailed. 40 and 7 for Pabe, 13, 3, 4, 6 for Thai.

#7 seed, #16 ranked Dayton, 3-0, in the title game. The #2, 3, 4, and 6 seeds all were upset in this tourney.

11/20: 99-79 and the tourney title. We never trailed after the first minute. Tourney MOP Dave Pabe had 39, 8, 5, and 5. 16, 9, 5, 5 for Brid. 21 TOs did NOT make me happy.

11/21: 94-75 over 1-1 UCLA here at home. Huge early lead again. 36, 7, 1, 4 for Pabe who has been terrific. 17, 15, 4 for Brid.

“I love, love, LOVE coming home every night, even if it’s late some nights.”

“And that will happen from now on?”

“Looks like it, except for the Superbowl and the Final Four, but I can live with that.”

“It’s great to have you here every night, that’s for sure!”

2/14: 15-0, 26-1, #1, 2 game lead in the ACC.

Pabe is still #2 on the Norton list and Brid is #6.

32 point win over VA Tech here. 26, 9, 8, 4 for Pabe, 24, 18 for Brid, 29, 10 for Drye.

67-54 at #2 ranked North Carolina. We never trailed. 28, 15 for Brid, 14, 9, 3 for Drye. We beat #2 in the country handily despite an off night for Pabe- 2-15, 1-9 on threes.

31 point win over Cal at home. 22, 9, 4 for Pabe, 15, 4, 4 for Geer.

37 point win over Georgia Tech here. 21, 19, 3, 3 blocks for Brid, 23, 10 for Drye, 14, 4, 3 for Pabe.

3/4: We end regular season play at 31-1, 20-0. Ranked #1. We win the ACC by 4 games.

6 point win at Southern Methodist. We led for the last 35 minutes. 25, 6, 8, 6 for Pabe, 22, 10 for Hold, 18, 14 for Brid.

27 point win over Clemson here. 20 and 9 for Pabe, 13, 5 for Hold.

In a weird scheduling quirk we play Clemson back to back and beat them by 16 at their place. 22, 12, 3, 3, 3 for Brid, 25, 3, 3, 4 for Pabe.

17 point win over Pitt here. 21, 12 for Hold, 19, 14 for Brid, 17, 13, 3 for Drye.

+20.2 PPG, +17.0 RBs, -4.3 TOs, averaging 10.8.

3/5: Pabe ends up #2 and Brid #5 on the Norton list. I think Pabe should have been #1.

Good news! Only Tom Shin declares for the draft!

3/9: #8 seed Maryland, 21-11, 11-9, in the quarter finals. We beat them by 35 at home.

3/10: 86-50. It was never a game. 26, 13, 3 for Pabe, 13, 13, 4 for brid, 16, 9 for Drye.

#5 seed Stanford, 21-10, 12-8, in the semis. Beat them by only 7 there.

3/11: 88-62. We led all the way. 21, 7, 4 for Pabe, 16, 14 for Hold, 13, 6 for Geer.

#6 ranked, #3 seed Virginia, 26-7, 15-5, in the title match. They beat North Carolina by 2. We won by 18 there.

3/12: Both teams come out cold. We score the first 9. Up 12 after 10. 49-27 at halftime. 17, 3 for Pabe, 13, 3 for Drye, 11, 4 for Hold.

Big early lead. Up 21 with 10 to play. Big lead late.

82-69 but it wasn’t that close. 27, 4, 3, 4 for tourney MOP Dave Pabe. 18, 7 for Drye, 17, 5 for Hold.

“Dan Fran here after the game with Coach Wynn. Great win, Coach.”

“We play well.”

“Can you win it all?”

“Well, we’ve only lost one game and we beat the #2 ranked team by 15 or so at their place. I like our chances. But, as always, you need a 6 game hot streak and a break somewhere along the way.”
