Week #13

Feb 7: Florida A&M Rattlers (8-13, 5-5) @ Grambling Tigers (17-4, 9-1)

We won 80-58. But what ended up a walk-over was anything but during the first 2o6 minutes of this game. We came out flat and fell behind by 12 with 13 minutes to go in the first half. We caught up with 3 minutes remaining in the half but ended up on the short end of a 43-39 halftime score. It took us 6 minutes in the 2nd half to catch up. But once we did, we left the Rattlers unable to strike back and pulled away for an easy win. SF David Heyward was our top scorer with 14 points. C Correy Parker had 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. PF Etan Benton scored 12 points and pulled down 6 boards.

Image

Feb. 10: Grambling Tigers (18-4, 10-1) @ Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (10-12, 5-6)

We beat Bethune-Cookman 76-55 to achieve our 11th straight win. We jumped out to an immediate lead and while we held onto it, the game was close for 10 minutes, but then we began drawing away from the Wildcats as our defense strengthened. By the end of the half we were up 44-29. We steadily expanded our lead throughout the 2nd half. SG Lonnie Robertson poured in 21 points while hauling down 6 rebounds and getting 3 assists and 2 steals. SF Keith Bowie with 14 points was our only other player in double figures, Alcorn State got thrashed by Arkansas Pine Bluff so we’re now alone in 1st place in the SWAC standings.

Image

SWAC Awards: For the 2nd straight week, SG Lonnie Robertson was the Player of the Week in the SWAC. In our two games, Lonnie had 28 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Bryant Weekes of Arkansas Pine Bluff was the conference’s Freshman Player of the Week.

Week #14

Feb. 14: Mississippi Valley Delta Devils (5-18, 4-8) @ Grambling Tigers

Another solid win, 77-62. Coupled with another loss by Alcorn State, that gives us a 2 game lead with 5 games remaining before the regular season concludes. After 5 lead changes, we edged ahead 39-32 at halftime. We continued to pad our lead throughout most of the 2nd half and were never seriously threatened. SG Lonnie Robertson continued to score well, finishing this game with 21 points and he also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. SF Keith Bowie added 10 points.

Image

Feb. 17: Grambling Tigers (20-4, 12-1) @ Alabama State Hornets (11-13, 8-5)

We got by the Hornets 68-61. We stormed through the first half to lead 39-25 at halftime. Our lead grew to as much as 19 points in the 2nd half, but Alabama State came on strong in the final 7 minutes to give us a scare. The Hornets outshot us 48% to 42%, but as usual our rebounding saved us…we were +13 on the boards. Our bench scored 40 of our 68 points. Alabama State’s bench scored just 20 points. SG Lonnie Robertson scored 11 and PG Josh Williams added 10 points.

SWAC Awards: The Player of the Week was Matt Tebbs of Texas Southern. Texas Southern pulled down both awards since Ricardo Douglas was named the Freshman Player of the Week.

Week #15

Feb. 21: Texas Southern Tigers (11-14, 9-5) @ Grambling Tigers (21-4, 13-1)

The Tigers had to win this game. Fortunately it was the GRAMBLING Tigers as we whipped the TEXAS SOUTHERN Tigers by a 95-66 score. Our offense was simply on fire in the first half and gave us a 62-47 halftime lead. After the two teams score a combined 109 points in that half, the 2nd half was the total opposite with the two teams combining to score just 52 points…and our defense came on strong to allow Texas Southern to score just 19 points in the 2nd half. SG Lonnie Robertson led our scoring with 18 points, but 4 other players hit for double figures: PF Etan Benton—13; SF Keith Bowie—12 (he also pulled down 8 rebounds); SF David Heyward—11; SG Brad O’Neil—10. Alcorn State lost yet another game dropping them 3 games behind us.

Image

Feb. 24: Southern Jaguars (12-14, 9-6) @ Grambling Tigers (22-4, 14-1)

We won our 15th straight game, this time by a 79-61 score. There were 8 lead change in the first half but our SG’s (Lonnie Robertson and Brad O’Neil) combined to pump in 20 points to carry us to a 40-35 halftime advantage. Southern hung with us for 7 minutes in the 2nd half, but then our defense throttled their attack and we opened a 24 point lead before winning by 18. We hit 57% of our FG’s, 53% of our 3’s, but just 46% of our FT’s. As has been typical for us this season, we controlled the glass (+20 !!!). SG Lonnie Robertson hit 8 of 12 from the field and scored 19 plus had 4 rebounds and 5 assists. C Correy Parker hit 8 of 10 from the field and scored 18. SG Brad O’Neil hit 5 of 7 from the field (including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc) and scored 14 points. PF Etan Benton added 10 points.

Image

Some of our players have been grumbling about the pollsters not giving us respect, but I’m not surprised since we’re members of a weak conference so the poll voters aren’t all the impressed with our lengthy win streak. Our NET Ranking is 37th…and I feel that may even be a bit high.

And just to let me know all is not peaches and cream, Anthony Erwin and Etan Benton got into a fight during practice the day after our win. When I brought them in for counselling, both were apologetic, that they just let things get out of hand, but they’d learned a lesson and it wouldn’t happen again. They also apologized to the rest of the team. So I don’t think it has affected our team chemistry. As far as individual player’s go, my biggest concern revolves around Keith Bowie and Brody Rowland. I’m really not sure why Keith has been having a tougher time with me and the team since he’s getting big time minutes, but Brody definitely wants more minutes than I’m able to give to him. To a lesser degree David Heyward also seems bummed about not playing as much as he wants.

SWAC Awards: The Player of the Week was Texas Southern’s Matt Tebbs for the 2nd consecutive week. Ricardo Douglas was also selected for the 2nd straight week as Freshman Player of the Week. So again Texas Southern players won both awards. My efforts to improve these 3 players attitudes have done little to improve things.

Week #16

Feb. 28: Grambling Tigers (23-4, 15-1) @ Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions (5-22, 3-13)

I’m happy. We won 74-72 in overtime! But I’m even happier than our guys got a wake up call. I think they overlooked the Golden Lions due to their poor record. This showed we have to play all-out every single time we take the court, no matter the competition. The first half was exceptionally close and we trailed at halftime 43-29. The 2nd half was a defensive juggernaut. We just couldn’t get our offense in gear and dropped behind by as much as 11 points. We woke up in the final 3 minutes but had to hit sink a bucket in the final 2 seconds to tie the game at 63-63 and send it to OT. We couldn’t put the Golden Lions away though. With 16 seconds they missed a shot to go ahead. We took the clock down to 8 seconds and called a time out. We set up a play to free Keith Bowie and got te ball to him for a 15 footer just before the buzzer sounded. It rimmed around and fell through to give us the win. That gave Keith 23 points for the game. C Correy Parker was our only other player to score in double figures and he had 12 points to go along with 8 boards, 2 steals and 4 blocks. I told the guys after the game that we had a big target painted on our backs and from here on out, every team we take on will be trying to knock us off our pedestal.

Image

Mar. 3: Prairie View Panthers (13-16, 7-10) @ Grambling Tigers (24-4, 16-1)

We finished the regular season with an 88-61 crushing of Prairie View. But the game was close for the first 13 minutes but we clamped down defensively at that point to go ahead 36-27 at the break. We blew the Panthers away in the 2nd half, leading by as much as 33 points before cruising in the final minutes for an easy win. We were led by SG Lonnie Robertson and SF David Heyward scoring 23 and 19 points, respectively. The win was our 17th in a row.

Image

Our two walk-ons, Carlos Shelton and Rashad Barrett got into an argument in practice the next day. What’s up with that? With our winning by big margins in quite a few games this season, I’ve played both for short times in more games than I normally would for walk-ons…and they should be damned happy about that. They’re both seniors so I just told them both to get off each other’s back and to cool it. Shelton took it well, Barrett less so, but I’m not going to suspend either of them for getting into an argument.

On Sunday I was surprised to find out that we had edged into the top 25 (at #25) in the Media Poll. We’re not ranked in the Coaches Poll. Our NET Ranking has risen to 33rd best in Division 1.

And…reviewing the SWAC weekly awards, SG Lonnie Robertson was awarded the conference Player of the Week 3 times this season, more often than any other player in the conference…and…SF Keith Bowie was awarded the conference Freshman Player of the Week award 4 times this season, which exceeded the number of this award given to any other player in the conference. Both players definitely earned their multiple awards.

My response to an interview question:

I was interviewed and asked how I’ve taken the team from less than 10 wins a season to well over 20 wins a season the past 2 years plus making a trip to the NCAA Tourney last season and coming out on top of the conference standings this season.

My answer was that there was a hunger at Grambling…a hunger caused by a lengthy period of basketball program failure. So the initial congratulations go to the administration of the school, the student body, and our fans for not only recognizing this hunger, but doing what was necessary to change the approach and atmosphere here. And my assistants have done a tremendous job of developing our players and preparing them to successfully implement our strategies in games. Additionally we’ve been able to be successful at bringing in some excellent recruits and transfer players. At this point 10 of our 13 scholarship players are guys we brought into the system, and this season 4 of our 5 starters have been players who came to Grambling during my now almost 3 seasons here. The 3 players on our roster who were here when I arrived also played key roles for us this year. So our entire roster really has worked hard and pulled together to achieve this season’s success. But I also want to give credit to one person and that’s my dad, Fred Aura, better known as Coach Fed. His long-term coaching prowess at Towson, Boston College, and Cal Poly gave me the road-map for building successful programs…I just don’t wear his characteristic…a fedora hat.

But we’re not done here at Grambling. We have less than two months to fill two vacant scholarships. We’re courting some good recruits to continue to strengthen our team in upcoming seasons…and if that fails, we’ll go after top-notch transfer players. More immediately, our team has to focus on each game in the conference tournament so that we qualify for the NCAA Tournament again and then go deeper in that tourney than we did last season. Those are all huge challenges.

SWAC Tournament

Round 1

#5 seed Southern—75; #12 seed Jackson State—70 (PoG: Todd Grays—19 pts, 5 ast)
#6 seed Texas Southern—81, #11 seed Arkansas Pine Bluff—71 (PoG: Matt Tebbs—18 pts, 4 reb, 2 stl)
#7 seed Alabama State—69; #10 seed Mississippi Valley—44 (PoG: Brian Rhodes—14 pts, 3 reb, 6 ast, 5 stl, 2 blk)
#8 seed Bethune Cookman—72; #9 seed Prairie View—69 (PoG: Josh Butler—10 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk)

Round 2 (Quarterfinals)

#4 seed Alabama A&M—84, #5 seed Southern—73 (PoG: Jevin Gilbert—17 pts, 8 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk)
#6 seed Texas Southern—82, #3 seed Florida A&M—75 (PoG: Ricardo Douglas—29 pts, 7 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl)
#7 seed Alabama State—62, #2 seed Alcorn State—49 (PoG: Jeremy Phillips—11 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl)
#1 seed Grambling—60, #8 seed Bethune Cookman—59 (Although we beat the Wildcats 76-55 when we played them on their court, they have some very good shooters and are a better team than what that game as well as their W-L record would indicate. The first 8 minutes of the game were just plain ugly ball by both teams. Then when both began playing better, a couple times we put together a few nice back-to-back possessions which made me think we’d break away. But those hopes were quickly dashed each time as Bethune-Cookman reeled us back in. At the break we trailed 32-31 but the refs had put the Wildcats on the line 7 more times where they’d scored 7 more points than us. With our offense sputtering we dropped behind by 11 points with 13 minutes remaining. So even though the refs were tagging us with more fouls than they were against Bethune Cookman, I decided we had to crank up the intensity of our defense. That definitely put a hurt on the Wildcats’ offense, but you have to put the hall in the hoop to catch up. And we had difficulty doing that. But we very slowly crept up and with 2-1/2 minutes to go we tied the game at 52-52. Bethune Cookman then scored 4 unanswered points. Keith Bowie brought us back with a 3 and after being fouled on another 3 attempt, sinking all 3 free throws to give us a 58-56 lead with 36 seconds remaining. Correy Parker then picked of a pass inside and got the ball to a streaking Bowie who slammed it home to put us up by 4 with just 17 ticks on the clock. The Wildcats’ PG Michael Bohm who had torn up the entire game dropped in another 3 with 7 seconds left. We were able to run the clock out to escape with a one-point victory. And I could finally exhale. Although he had a horrible first half, SF Keith Bowie scored 18 of his 20 points in the 2nd half to be the Player of the Game. C Correy Parker with 10 points was our only other player to score in double figures.)

Round 3 (Semifinals)

#7 seed Alabama State—79, #6 seed Texas Southern—67 (PoG: Bryan Rhodes—17 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast)
#1 seed Grambling—72, #4 seed Alabama A&M—61 (Although we won 85-78 when we played Alabama A&M on their court, it was a close game the entire 40 minutes. Our first four possessions resulted in 4 turnovers…horrible…fortunately the Bulldogs made just 2 points during that time and we then went on a 7-0 run. Our offense which was led by Parker, Robertson, and Bowie who scored 28 points in the half carried us to a 43-37 halftime advantage. Our defense was porous though. It took almost 3 minutes before either team scored in the 2nd half. By the midpoint of the 2nd half we were ahead by 15. In the next 5 minutes we couldn’t buy a basket and Alabama A&M cut our lead to 9. Our offense rekindled and we never let the Bulldogs ge[t any closer. Correy Parker had a double-double (21 points and 10 rebounds) and was the Player of the Game. SF Keith Bowie and SG Lonnie Robertson both scored 15 points with Bowie pulling down 8 boards.)

Round 4 (Championship)

#1 seed Grambling—77, #7 seed Alabama State—71 (We beat the Hornets twice (by 11 and 7 points) this season. But Alabama State has played 3 extremely strong games in this tournament. We led most of the first half, but ne could pull away. The half ended with us on top 42-38. Keith Bowie led our scoring with 12 points. The Hornets went up by 4 points just 3 minutes into the 2nd half. We slowly came back and by the midpoint of the half we were pretty much in control, but couldn’t shake Alabama A&M. The game remained in doubt until the final minute. SF Keith Bowie scored 19 points and had 6 rebounds to be the Player of the Game. Keith was also the MVP of the tournament with 54 points in the 3 games. SG Lonnie Robertson had 14 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. We were seriously challenged in all 3 games but played just well enough to win each game and be crowned SWAC champs.)

Selection Show

#1 seeds: Kansas (29-5); Duke (28-7); Gonzaga (29-6); Indiana (28-5)

Grambling (28-4) is the #6 seed in the West Region and will play #11 seed Maryland (21-11)

No other SWAC teams were selected to play in any of the post-season tournaments

How to be an idiot

Walk-on SG Carlos Shelton got into a fight with a teammate over a video game. Dumb. But then when I was trying to counsel him he not only failed to acknowledge any responsibility for the fight, but gave me a smart-ass response. That earned him a suspension and will keep him from accompanying the team to the NCAA Tournament. He’s a senior so that’s how he’s ended his time with the team. Idiocy.

NCAA Results

Round 1

#11 seed Maryland—82, #6 seed Grambling—66 (I would have thought Maryland would be a higher seed. They’ve played a tough schedule and achieved an overall record of 21-11. Their record against ranked teams is 2 and 4. They finished 5th in the Big 10 with a 12-8 record…and all 4 teams above them in the Big 10 standings are in the Top 25 in the polls. Their NET Ranking is 38. But we knew we’d be up against tough competition in the Big Dance. The oddsmakers pegged us as underdogs against the Terrapins. The game was close throughout the entire first half with 13 lead changes and 7 ties. Maryland dropped in 61% of their shots but we scrappily hung with them, trailing 41-38 at the break. Correy Parker scored 10 points and PF Brody Rowland came in off the bench to knock down all 3 shots he took from beyond the arc. Our challenge for the 2nd half was to make them take tougher shots and to hopefully get the refs to call some fouls on the Terrapins. Maryland dug a deep hole for us by scoring the first 6 points of the 2nd half. With the refs continuing to tag us with twice as many fouls, I tore into them and picked up a technical. Midway through the half, with Maryland continuing to shoot well and the refs putting them on the line frequently, we trailed 64-49. We struggled to come back but everything we attempted defensively did nothing to cut into the Terrapins shooting prowess. Maryland also scored 11 more points at the line than us. We were unable to get close. Thus ended our tournament hopes. SF Keith Bowie had 15 points, 6 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. PF Brody Rowland also scored 15. SG Lonnie Robertson hit for 14 points and C Correy Parker had 12 points and 5 boards. Maryland’s star freshman PF Kirk Lingle torched us for 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to earn the Player of the Game award.)

Recruiting

Losing in the first round was a downer, but it did give me the opportunity to make home visits to 4 of the players to whom we have offered scholarships. The result was that a week later we got three excellent recruits to confirm they will be coming our way:

C Aleem Charles, a 6-10 JC transfer player from Cedar Falls, IA. He’s a 4-star player who’s ranked as the 67th best recruit (64th in the NXT Rankings). He’s averaged 14.4 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.3 bpg, and 2.7 spg this past season. He’s an excellent inside shooter and an outstanding rebounder. He’s also a good passer and has been injury-free.

PG Jon Benoit, a 6-5 JC transfer player from Marietta, GA. He’s averaged 16.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 5.4 apg, 1.9 bpg, and 2.6 spg this season. He’s a fantastic passer and excellent ball handler. He’s a very good shooter from outside and is strong defensively. His coach has told me he’s a hard worker who doesn’t cause problems. He’s a 3-star player who is ranked as the 197th best recruit (#126 in the NXT Rankings).

SG Charles Whitney, a 6-1 high schooler from Australia. He is a 4-star player who is ranked as the 69th best recruit. He averaged 20.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.7 bpg, 1.5 spg this season. He is a great scorer with excellent outside shooting skills. His defensive skills are also extremely good and he’s very athletic. His work ethic is outstanding. His development may be a bit slower since he's not played in the U.S.

So we got three stellar recruits who should really help us. We didn’t fill 2 available scholarships but will attempt to fill those during the upcoming Transfer Portal.
