Solitary Man

2/17: 79-67 over Coppin ST here. We led all the way, by as many as 23. 50-33 at the half. Our outside game led the way tonight. Jon Mack had 22, 2, 3, Ivan Jens had 19, 3, 3. 9 TOs.

We're in a 4 way tie for 1st with 4 to play. The next two are away then we finish with 2 at home.

I'm beginning to feel a little better but still getting vicious headaches from time to time. The civilian head of the kitchen said that the Warden informed him that there would be two more guards in the kitchen at all times, and that no inmate would be allowed to enter the freezer or any of the storage facilities unaccompanied by a guard. Hopefully that will keep us safer.

2/21: 72-68 at Campbell. Big win, given how tight the Conf. S race is. We trailed by 10 early, and by 4 at the half. We played better in the 2nd but never took the lead until there were about 4 minutes left to play. It was a battle all night long. 19, 5 for Jens, 10, 10 for Engo, 11, 1, 7 for #3 guard Mark Rily. 10 TOs.

We're still in a 4 way tie for the lead so our road finale at NJIT is a big game. After that we close with 2 at home.

My headaches are becoming less frequent and they're talking about releasing me from the infirmary in a day or two.

2/24: 62-70 at NJIT. Damn! We needed this one and we didn't get it. We were in it until late but they scored 5 straight points with about 2 minutes left and that did us in. The refs were definitely a factor. They went to the line 25 times and we went only 14. Some of the calls were... let's say they were "creative." I don't mean that in a good way either. 16, 3, 3 for Jens, 11, 6 for Engo.

We're tied for 3rd, 1 back of 1st.

I'm out of the infirmary and back to work. Things look quite a bit different in here. Mirrors high up on every wall, in the corners, and extra guards. It won't be easy for anyone to attack anyone else in here.

3/1: 90-63 over South Dakota here. We dominated all the way. 16, 2, 4 for sub Mark Rily who has been hot lately. 14, 9, 4 for Engo, 13, 10 for Jete. +14 RBs, 10 TOs.

Back to a 4 way tie for 1st with 1 to play.

3/3: 80-70 over McNeese ST here. We led by as many as 17. 16, 6 for Engo, 12, 7, 3 for Jete, 11, 2, 7 for Mack. 10 TOs.

20-7, 12-4, in a 3 way tie for 1st in Conf. S. I think we'll be the #2 seed.

Little used guard Stan Sams hurt his calf. Out for about a week.

Things are going well at work. There's tension in the prison yard when I'm out there. I have no idea what it's about. As I've said I stay out of that stuff; it's nothing but trouble.

3/5: We play #7 seed South Carolin Upstate in the quarter final round. We won by 8 at their place.

3/6: 86-61. We played really well tonight. I was pleased. 6 players in double figures, led by Jete with 16 and 11. +19 RBs, 10 TOs.

We play #3 seed Louisiana-Monroe in the semifinals. We won by 10 at our place. They're a good team and we'll need to play well.

3/7: 81-97. Ugh. Our D just wasn't there in the 2nd half; they scored 59 points. They shot 58.6%, 12-24 on threes.

Given our record and our RPI, #83, we'll go somewhere, but it won't be the big dance.

3/12: NIT South Region, #7 seed. We play #2 Washington ST, 19-9. If we play good D we can beat this team.

Scouting Coach Marty Carr: Our biggest concern is Washington State's excellent outside shooting. We have not always done well in defending that but if we don't defend it well tonight our season will be over.

3/14: 63-84. Ouch! We were over matched. We couldn't overcome the talent gap.

Last game for seniors Jete, Engo, and Rily. My last game here? If I get the right offer it will be.

4/3: #4 Michigan ST wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Seniors Ron Jete and Clif Engo make the Conf. S 1st team.

4/9: I'm going to UMass in Conf. I, dropping to J. It's a big jump, and I don't know if I'm ready for it, but this is a destination school for me and the chance may not come again.

4/23: I ask for $.

No.

21-9, tied for 1st in the Conf. In my 4 years at UMass-Lowell I was 96-32, .750. Pretty good. I expect that to take a hit in the next year or maybe even 2 years.

5/1: Recruiting class #168. Only 2 recruits.

6/5: One guy transfers. He wasn't going to play.

Looking at transfers.

6/16: We get an SG and an SF, both of whom look like they will be able to help us.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We want 2 bigs.

7/17: Things are going well at work. I've been told that I am up for a promotion, to Assistant Director of the kitchen. This is a completely administrative position with very little time actually spent in the kitchen. I would share an office with the Director and work for and with him in meal planning, assigning shifts and duties, purchasing... That would be great. They've never had an inmate in this position so that would really be good.

8/21: We offer to an SG and 2 PFs.

8/24: I got the promotion! I now work in an office. Amazing. Part of my job is taking care of inventory of supplies- food, cooking utensils... So I do go into the kitchen regularly. Then my boss and i do the ordering based upon what shows up in my inventory. We also do meal planning. I'm looking forward to that. I hope I can convince my boss to add more variety, and a little more quality to the meals. They're pretty bad.

The recipe and list of ingredients for my award-winning "Pike Quenelles with Sauce Nantua (Quenelles de Brochet)" is in the mail to you. I'm sure the inmates will love it.
