Hoops in Space

2/16: The training of the navigators is going well. I’d say another week or so and we’ll be all set. Been here since 1/22 so almost a month.

2/25: Back home! It feels good. I was living in very cramped quarters on ship 10, sharing quarters with someone else until the last week or so.

3/4: 98-88 over North Texas at home. We led all the way. 32, 5, 3 for Jonn.

84-74 at Memphis. We trailed by one at halftime then came alive. 20, 2, 6 for Ells.

65-56 at UAB. We took a big lead early and held it all night. 20 for Ells, 18 for Jonn. This is definitely a guard oriented team.

85-75 over Temple here. We led wire to wire. 22 for Jonn, 19 for Ells.

99-85 at Wichita ST. We never trailed. 32, 1, 9, 3 for Ells, 21, 10 for Mart.

79-89 at Charlotte to end the regular season. We blew a 19 point lead and I was NOT happy about that. 21 for Jonn, 20 for Ells. Lousy D and worse officiating.

We end the regular season at 23-9, 13-5 in the AAC which we won by 1 game over east Carolina and Tulane. Ranked #25.

Jonn leads us in scoring with 19.8. Ells has 16.3 with 6.6 assists. 12.3, 9.1 for Mart. 10.7 for Dear.

Back in a routine, working 6 hours a day, getting regular exercise. Eating at my favorite restaurants. I missed all of that.

3/5: No one declares for the draft.

We’re back in motion. We’d been stopped since the accident on 1/22.

3/7: We play #9 seed North Texas, 18-12, 8-10, in the AAC quarter final. We won by 10 at home. They’re strong inside.

3/8: They take an early lead. They lead by double figures. Down 13 after 10. 35-40 at halftime. We catch them and take the lead. Up by 9 with 10 to play. They catch up. We trail late.

73-5. Led Mart had a 6 footer blocked at the buzzer. Disappointing loss. 16, 13 for Mart, 14 for Jonn.

Our NET is 24 so we should make the NCAAs.

3/12: In! #8 West. We play #9 seed West Virginia, 20-11. They’re good outside and play strong D.

3/17: They lead early. Down 10. Down 9 after 10. 38-45 at the half. We trailed throughout the 1st.

They hold their lead early. We’re playing catch up and not getting there. They go on a run. Down 15 with 10 to play.

79-81 but it wasn’t that close. Ells hit a three at the buzzer.

Disappointing post season.

4/3: #16 Xavier wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Stan Jonn is AAC MOP and 1st team. Ells and Mart make the 2nd team. I am Conf. COY.

4/9: I’m staying here.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade.

No.

23-11. We won the AAC. 47-21, .691 overall.

5/1: Recruit class #72.

I mentioned 3D printing briefly awhile ago. We have several 3D printers and they can print literally anything. We used them to print a new section of the outside of the ship, the one the space rock destroyed. We printed it section by section and had robots go outside the ship to install it. When anything breaks and cannot be repaired we just print a new one. Sometimes robots install it, sometimes humans, sometimes a combination of both.

All of our shoes and boots are 3D printed since we have no leather.

5/22: 4 guys leave, 1 guard, 3 bigs. None were going to get meaningful playing time.

5/26: 0-4.

5/29: 0-4.

6/2: We get a good looking SF. He’ll probably start.

6/5: 0-3. Frustrating.

6/9: 0-2.

6/12: 0-2 and we’re done.

6/25: We go to Indy and the Houston Classic.

6/26: 1st day of recruiting. We need 2 guards and 5 bigs. Tall order!

I’ve talked about food before and about how food production work is what most people on board do. It’s not easy to keep 4000 people fed. Since that’s how many are on each ship, and since none of them want a diet that’s repetitive or boring, we grow a wide variety of foods, and produce “meat” in the lab.

On ship 10 most of the robots who replaced the slain humans work in food production. When I talk about “meat” grown in the lab that also includes fish, both fin fish and shell fish.

We eat well on board these ships. I have absolutely no complaints about the food.

7/17: We offer to 7.

9/18: We get a C, lose 2.

9/25: We get a PG and a C, lose 3.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We’re going with a 3 guard set again this season.

We lose 2 more recruits.

10/9: We get 3. We now have 2 guards and 4 bigs. Looking for another big guy.

10/16: We lose 1.

11/13: Here’s the lineup:

Junior Mel Ells is back at the Point.

Junior Stan Jonn is back at SG.

Frosh Alan Wats is at SF and backs up at both guard spots.

Senior Gene Grun is a back up guard.

Soph Gord Tony is at PF. He didn’t play much last year but has looked good.

Senior Led Mart is back at C.

Senior Scot Jack, a transfer from Michigan ST is 1st off the bench. Senior Jem Jess is next. Then comes soph Emo Bake. Last is frosh Rick Shau, who isn’t ready.

I’m really enjoying getting back to hiking. I didn’t hike when I was on ship 10. First, I didn’t have my hikes programmed there, and more important, I really didn’t have the time. A good hike takes about an hour and a half. I opted to run for 45 minutes instead. Doing a lot of off the trail hiking, which is called bushwhacking.

11/30: 4-1 in our first 5. 78-66 over Charleston here. Big early lead. 20, 3, 5 for Jonn, 13, 12 for Mart, 16, 9 for Tony.

88-71 over Air Force at home. Again, a big early lead. 20, 4, 3 for Ells, 14, 7, 4 for Wats.

We lost in the 1st round of the Charleston Classic to #2 seed, #21 ranked ST Mary, 81-89. We were the #7 seed. We were in it for a long time. 19, 5, 6 for Jonn, 18, 4, 3 for
Wats. Mart and Ells both fouled out and I got a T.

84-75 at South Carolina ST. We led all the way. 18, 13 for Mart, 19, 2, 5 for Ells. 22 TOs which I didn’t like at all!

79-67 over Indiana ST here. 15, 16 for Mart, 16 for Ells.

When we were preparing for this fascinating journey there were lots of naysayers. They said living on a ship would be too cramped. Living indoors all the time was unhealthy…

I wasn’t worried about the cramped conditions. I knew that I wouldn’t spend all that much time in my quarters and when I was there I’d be on the computer or reading or sleeping in my recliner. I didn’t think it would be a problem, and it hasn’t been.

As to living indoors, that’s what the holosuites are for. I get ‘outdoors” in the holosuites regularly, nearly every day, and without bugs or dangerous animals!

1/1/2103: We won our last 6 to finish pre-conf play at 10-1.

82-56 at Bethune-Cookman. It was never close. 24, 9, 4 for Ells, 22 for Jonn.

80-64 over Colorado ST here. They stayed close for a half. 22 for Rlls, 15, 18 for Mart, 15 for Jonn.

84-56 over Harvard here. We led by 26 at the half. 23 for Ells, 16, 17 for Tony.

76-59 over Anal Roberts here. We led all the way. 17, 3, 3 for Ells.

82-62 over Hofstra at home. 25, 5 for Jonn, 21 for Ells.

95-85 over Old Dominion at home. 34, 4, 3 for Ells, 20, 4, 5 for Jonn.

Ells leads us in scoring with 19.5. Jonn gets 16.0, 11.3, 10.3 for Mart.

+14.6 PPG, +12.3 RBs, -4.5 TOs, 11.6.

1/22: 4-2 in our first 6 AAC games.

82-65 at Temple. We never trailed. 20, 7, 4 for Wats. 12, 11 for Mart.

91-79 at North Texas. We led all the way. 23 for Jonn.

82-89 loss to Wichita ST at home. We lead by 10 early and by 3 at the half. The officiating was awful. We went to the line 27 times, they went 39.

102-105 in OT at Charlotte. 38, 6, 2, 5 for Jonn. We should have won it in regulation.

81-78 at Tulane. Close all the way. 19, 0, 7 for Ells, 17, 5 for Jonn.

80-70 over South Florida at home. We led all the way and the final score was as close as they got in the 2nd half. 23 for Ells, 16, 15 for Mart.

This is not a military operation but it’s quasi-military in lots of ways, especially chain of command. We need that structure on a space ship, but we don’t need or want the rest of the military trappings.

2/8: 4-2 in our last 6. 8-4 in AAC play, 18-5 overall. Tied for 2nd, 1 behind first.

88-64 Over Charlotte here. 25, 14 for Tony.

Stan Jonn bruised a calf. Limited play for at least 2 games.

61-79 at Rice. It hurts not having Jonn starting. We were never really in this one.

66-69 at Florida ST. This one was close all the way. We lost it in the last minute. 25 for Ells, 19, 13 for Mart.

84-77 over East Carolina here. We led all the way. 25, 12, 3 for Mart, 22, 4, 4 for Wats.

94-88 at Florida Atlantic. We were down 11 early in the 2nd. 29, 6, 6 for Ells.

Jonn will start our next game.

72-67 at Wichita ST. We never trailed and led by as many as 21. 19, 4, 4 for Ells, 18, 3, 5, 5 for Jonn.

82-72 over Texas San Antonio here. Again, we never trailed. 24, 8, 3, 3 for Jonn. 12, 12 for Mart.

71-56 at Memphis. It was close throughout the 1st half, then we took control. Balanced scoring and solid D.

78-75 over Temple here. Close all the way. We made our free throws at the end to hang on for the win. 22, 6, 3 for Jonn, 12, 11 for Mart.

87-76 over North Texas here. We never trailed. Balanced scoring.

70-48 over Tulane here. It was never in doubt. 18, 10 for Mart.
