Way Back When

2/5: 4 wins get us to 18-2, 7-1, alone in 1st in Conf. D, 1 up on 2 teams. Ranked #20.

Mississippi ST challenged us before falling by 7. We took an early lead and led by as many as 23. The closest they got late was 4 so it was never a one possession game in crunch time.

Wams and Holt led the scoring and we were dominant inside.

3/2: 1st issue of Time magazine.

3/5: We finish regular season play at 26-2, 15-1. We win Conf. D by 4 games. #11, NET #11.

We had back to back 5 point road wins against 2nd place Michigan and 3rd place Brigham Young, so the Conf. D tourney could be challenging!

Good news: We lose no one to the draft.

3/9: We play #8 seed Belmont, 16-14, 8-8, in the quarter finals. They shocked us at their place for our only conf. loss, then we shellacked them at our place.

3/10: 42-38 at the half. The refs are killing us and Belmont is hanging tough. We come roaring out in the 2nd an d put the game away quickly.

94-67. What a second half! 20 and 6 for Curry, 14, 15 for Wams. Good guard play. +11 for the bench. Only 8 TOs.

It's #4 seed Mississippi ST, 18-10, 10-6, in the semis. We won by 7 at our place in our only meeting. Their forwards are tough.

3/11: 33-33 at the break but their forwards each have 3 fouls. Curry had a great half, 13 and 4. We need to do better inside all in all. We score the first 9 in the 2nd half. It's a battle late!

84-79. Whew! We outscored them, 12-3 in the last couple of minutes. 24, 9 for Curry who played all 40 minutes and who was the difference. 10, 12, 4 steals for Wams. Both of our guards fouled out and Curry and Wams each wound up with 4. I let the refs know how I felt about the awful job they did but I stopped short of getting T'd up.

In a major blow, starting SF Roger Holt broke his hand and is out for the season. Dex Beno will start.

#2 seed Michigan, 19-10, 11-5, in the title game. They have 2 guys hurt but both will likely play.

3/12: Fast start then they come back. Up 3 after 10. A late run puts us up 31-21 at halftime. Great D; they shot 25%. Up 23 with 10 to play.

68-43. Terrific D. Curry, the tourney MOP, led us with 14 and 5. 7 players had between 7 and 14 points. Only 10 TOs.

We're hoping for a #3 or possibly even a #2 seed.

#3 West. We play #14 Portland ST, 18-11.

3/17: 44-34 at the half.

84-65 as we took total control in the 2nd half. 27, 15, 3 for Wams, 19, 6 for Curry. We controlled the paint.

#6 seed Florida ST, 21-10, in the 2nd round. They have a strong outside game.

3/19: Up 8 after 10. 37-23 at the break. Wams is playing great ball. Up 19 with 10 to go.

80-59. 15, 9, 5, 4 for Wams, 13, 4, 4, 5 for SG Vin Sull. +26 in the paint.

#2 seed, #7 ranked Florida, 25-7, in the Sweet 16. They're a big favorite and we'll need to be at our best to have a shot in this one.

3/24: 21-44 at the half. Not pretty! They're killing us outside. We're holding our own inside.

60-79. We won the 2nd half but it was too little too late. 14, 7, 4 blocks for Curry, 10, 14 for Wams.

We're losing Wams and starting PG Joe Tart.

We finally get the PF we were after all season to sign.

4/3: #2 seed Duke wins the championship.

4/4: Awards: Deek Wams is Conf. D POY, Def. POY, and 1st team. Ian Curry and Joe Tart make 2nd team. I get the coaching award.

4/9: Not going anywhere.

4/23: I ask for $.

No.

Good season, 31-3, 1st in Conf. D, Sweet 16. Overall I'm 633-98, .866.

5/1: Recruit class #145.

Yankee Stadium is open.

Teaching the theory of evolution outlawed in Oklahoma.

Warner Bothers studios open.

Louis Armstrong releases his first recording.

5/29: We lose a big guy who would have played. Looking for another big to replace him.

Got a good one!

6/26: We need 2 guards and 3 bigs.

7/13: Hollywoodland sign erected.

8/2: President Harding dies. Calvin Coolidge becomes 30th U. S. President.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, an SF, a PF, and a C.

Travel by rail is still not the greatest experience. The trains are hot and very dusty in the summer, and cold in the winter. The food varies, sometimes it's quite good and other times not so good. It is always difficult to sleep on the train given the frequent stops and the whistle blowing at all busy intersections.

The newfangled buses are even worse- no food, no way to sleep comfortably sitting up.

9/18: We get our #1 recruit, an SF, #75, and a PG, #120. We lose 2 bigs.

We have a schedule. No in season tourney this season. Interestingly enough, all of our pre-conf. games are at home; strange.

Printers strike in New York City. All newspapers are shut down.

9/25: We get a PF, #100, a PG, #180. We lose a big.

10/2: We lose a big, offer to an SG.

10/9: We get the SG, #120.

10/15: Yankees beat the New York Giants to win the World Series.

10/16: The Walt Disney Company is formed.

Excavation of King Tut's burial chamber continues.

11/8: Beer Hall Putsch in Germany. The perps are given light sentences.

11/13: Here's our lineup:

Senior Vic Sull is at the Point. He was mostly at SG last season.

Senior Ric Robb has been very impressive during practice and will start at SG.

#3 guard, junior Karl Houl will get plenty of minutes at both guard spots and at SF. He may start eventually. #4 guard is frosh Kirk Willias, who is not bad. Next guard is soph Jay Newn who is decent. Last is frosh Rob Crow; we red shirted him last year but he's still not ready.

Junior Rog Holt is back at SF.

Senior Ian Curry, who may be our best player, is back at PF.

Senior Dex Beno finally gets his chance to start, in the middle.

#1 big off the bench is Dom Hend, a transfer from Stanford who looks good. #2 is frosh Aaron Riley, who may increase his minutes as we go along. Next is senior Len Brox, who is just adequate. Finally
it's frosh Rich Perl, whose D needs work.

11/27: We start with 4 easy wins. Curry is averaging 20.5, 8.5, to lead us in both categories. 14.8, 7.3 for Beno. Great start but we won't know how good we are until we get to Conference C play.

12/18: 7-1. We lost by 12 to a very good Oklahoma ST team. We're doing a lot of things well, but obviously we need to get better.

1/8/1924: We close out pre-conf. play at 10-1 after 3 easy wins. NET #48.

Curry leads us with 20.2, and is 2nd in RBs with 8.4. Dex Beno gets 13.0 and leads with 8.6 RBs. Our guards are playing well and taking good care of the ball.

At some point we will have climbed to onbe conference too high. Is this the year? We're about to find out as Conf. C play starts.

1/22: 4 wins to start Conf. C play, none of them close games. Curry was consistently excellent.

14-1, 4-0, ranked #25, NET #18.

3 of our next 4 are away and starting guard Ric Robb is hurt and will see only limited action.
