READY FOR PRIME TIME?

Dec. 2: #17 Indiana Hoosiers (5-2) @ Iowa Hawkeyes (5-2)

Terry Morillo: Another shoddy first half. Our offense failed to click and Iowa took a 31-25 lead at the half. In the locker room we questioned the team about how bad they really want to win and left it up to them to talk among themselves to determine the answer. I guess the answer was that they really wanted to win because they exploded out of the game in the 2nd half and within the first 6 minutes they’d gone from 6 down to 12 ahead. They continued to pour in points and ran away from the Hawkeyes to give us a 75-59 road win. We were +12 on the boards and hit 54% of our shots. George Zinn—18 pts, 7 reb; Kirk Reeves—15 pts, 4 reb, 2 stl; Chris Broussard—13 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast; Jason Collier—8 pts. [6-2]

Ken Yamoto

The three recruits who have given us verbal acceptances of our scholarship offers in the fall are still firmly on board. Each is having a good season on their high school teams. We’re pretty confident that they will all meet our SAT requirements. But we’re continuing to maintain contact with a number of recruits who have not yet committed anywhere in case one of our three doesn’t do as well on the SAT exam that we expect they will. This past week we added a few international recruits to our contact and call lists but will just try to develop interest by calling and texting since we don't have enough money in our budget for anything more.

Dec.6: Morehead State Eagles (1-4) @ #20 Indiana Hoosiers (6-2)

Ramon Montez: Even though Morehead State hung with us for the first 14 minutes (with 14 lead changes), we finally put together 2 strong halves. We shot ahead late in the first half and were on top 47-27 at the break. We then expanded our lead to as much as 30 points in the 2nd half and brought down the Eagles 81-56. We dropped In 61% of our FG’s, out-rebounded Morehead State 30-22 and forced the Eagles to turn the ball over 24 times. Chris Broussard—16 pts, 3 reb; Kirk Reeves—14 pts, 5 reb; Jason Collier—11 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl; George Zinn—10 pts, 5 reb; Julius Waterman—9 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast. [7-2]

Dec. 9: #20 Indiana Hoosiers (7-2) @ Virginia Cavaliers (6-0)

Mike McMillan: There were 11 lead changes in the first half, but we came on strong in the final minutes to lead 39-33 when the buzzer sounded. But our defense was totally ineffective throughout the entire 2nd half and allowed the Cavaliers to score 62 points and beat us 95-86. But the refs contributed to our demise by putting 4 of our starters into severe foul trouble, thus limiting their playing time. Virginia was able to score 18 more points than us on free throws. Calvin Heard—14 pts, 6 ast; Brett Mosley—13 pts, 2 ast; Ray Richardson—13 pts; Kirk Reeves—10 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl; George Zinn—9 pts, 3 reb. [7-3]

Dec. 13: #22 Indiana Hoosiers (7-3) @ #19 Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-3)

Ken Yamoto: Going into this game we thought this would be a game of equals. And that bore out to be the case. The lead bounced back and forth throughout the first half with the Red Raiders eking out a 33-30 halftime advantage. Tech was on top for most of the 2nd half but the game remained close the entire way. I thought we fought hard and played a helluva game, but we came up short by a final score of 75-68. Kirk Reeves—14 pts; Chris Broussard—12 pts, 5 reb; Brett Mosley—8 pts, 3 reb; Johnny Lubeck—8 pts, 2 ast. Injury Report: SF Julius Waterman injured his wrist and our athletic trainers feel he can play but it will take nearly a week to completely heal. [7-4]

Dec. 20: Marquette Golden Eagles (4-5) @ Indiana Hoosiers (7-4)

Mike McMillan: Two tough road losses to very good teams dropped us out of the Top 25 but our NET Ranking remains high (#11). Marquette gave us all we could handle in the first half and we trailed 33-31 at the break. We finally got on top for good after 4 minutes of play in the 2nd half. We pulled ahead by as much as 17 points but let the Golden Eagles cut our lead in half in the final 5 minutes. So we won 69-60 but it was far from being an impressive win. Chris Broussard—12 pts, 3 ast, 2 stl; Kirk Reeves—11 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl; Brian Valdez—9 pts; Calvin Heard—8 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl; George Zinn—7 pts, 10 reb. [8-4]

Dec. 27: Southern California Trojans (7-4) @ Indiana Hoosiers (8-4)

Terry Morillo: Alll-riiighttt !!! We finally got back to putting together a solid 40 minutes of play. Our D in the first half was outstanding. We led 35-18 at halftime. We extended our lead and never let up throughout the 2nd half and we came away with a 69-46 stomping of the Trojans. George Zinn—13 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast; Kirk Reeves—12 pts, 3 reb; Chris Broussard—10 pts, 3 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk; Calvin Heard—9 pts, 3 ast. We’ve been gradually increasing freshman SF Martin Towers playing time from a couple minutes a game to now 10 minutes…and he continues to impress. In his 10 minutes tonight, he dropped in both of his 3’s and had 3 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a block. He’s hit 77% of his FG’s and 57% of his 3’s thus far this season. We’ll see if he can continue to produce as we expand his court time more. [9-4]

Jan. 3, 2045: #24 Buffalo Bulls (10-1) @ Indiana Hoosiers (9-4)

Ramon Montez: We pulled ahead very early in the game and held the lead the entire way. At the half we were up 46-34 and we finished by besting the Bulls 86-77. So good offense, so-so defense. Kirk Reeves—21 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl; Chris Broussard—18 pts, 4 reb, 2 blk; George Zinn—10 pts, 3 reb; Jason Collier—10 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl; Julius Waterman—8 pts. Injury Report: Chris Broussard is suffering from some tendinitis. Nothing serious and he won’t miss any action. [10-4]

Mike McMillan

Our pre-conference play is over. We finished with a 10-4 record and are back in the Top 25 in the polls at #24 in the Media Poll and #23 in the Coaches Poll. Our NET Ranking is 7th best. We averaged 73.6 ppg while giving up 66.6 ppg.

Now we’ll be beginning Conference F competition. In pre-conference play 14 of the 16 teams have records better than .500, one is right at .500 and one is just below .500 . Tennessee which has an 11-1 record is the only team other than us in the Top 25 and they’re #18. Richmond is 10-1, Milwaukee is 9-2, and 4 teams (Yale, Florida State, Auburn, and Akron) each have 8-3 records. So it looks like it will be tough to excel in conference play. The media has picked us to finish 1st followed by Utah, SMU, Akron, George Mason, Florida State, Richmond and Tennessee.

Here’s our leaders within the team:

Scoring (ppg): PF Kirk Reeves—12.9; C George Zinn—11.4; SG Chris Broussard—11.2; PG Brett Mosley—6.6; PG Calvin Heard—5.3; PF Jason Collier—4.9; SF Julius Waterman—4.9; PF Brian Valdez—4.4; SF Johnny Lubeck—4.0; SG Ray Robinson—2.5; SF Martin Towers—2.0; SG Adrian Gomes—1.8; SG Joe Alexander—1.3; PF Andrew Watkins—1.1; PF Jamar McKie—0.4

Rebounding (rpg): George Zinn—5.5; Kirk Reeves—4.6; Jason Collier—3.5; Johnny Lubeck—3.2; Chris Broussard—2.9; Brian Valdez—2.7; Julius Waterman—2.4; Brett Mosley—1.4; Calvin Heard—1.1; Martin Towers—1.0; Andrew Watkins—0.7; Ray Richardson—0.7; Adrian Gomes—0.5; Jamar McKie—0.3; Joe Alexander—0.3

Assists (apg): Brett Mosley—4.2; Calvin Heard—3.1; Chris Broussard—2.1; Julius Waterman—1.4; Johnny Lubeck—1.2; Kirk Reeves—1.1; George Zinn—1.0; Jason Collier—0.9; Brian Valdez—0.6; Martin Towers—0.6; Adrian Gomes—0.5; Ray Richardson—0.4; Joe Alexander—0.3; Andrew Watkins—0.2; Jamar McKie—0.1

Steals (spg): Kirk Reeves—1.4; Chris Broussard—0.9; Jason Collier—0.9; Johnny Lubeck—0.8; Brett Mosley—0.7; Calvin Heard—0.6; Julius Waterman—0.6; George Zinn—0.6; Brian Valdez—0.6; Adrian Gomes—0.5; Ray Richardson—0.3; Joe Alexander—0.3; Martin Towers—0.1; Andrew Watkins—0.0; Jamar Mckie—0.0

Blocks (bpg): George Zinn—1.0; Chris Broussard—0.8; Brian Valdez—0.6; Jason Collier—0.5; Kirk Reeves—0.4; Johnny Lubeck—0.4; Calvin Heard—0.3; Adrian Gomes—0.2; Ray Richardson—0.1; Andrew Watkins—0.1; Brett Mosley, Julius Waterman, Joe Alexander, Martin Towers, and Jamar Mckie—all 0.0

Starting Lineup Change: Johnny Lubeck hasn’t been producing as well as we thought he would at SF. So we’re going to try Julius Waterman as our starting SF with Lubeck and Martin Towers subbing at SF.

Jan. 10: #24 Indiana Hoosiers (10-4, 0-0) @ Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (7-4, 0-0)

Ken Yamoto: We lost to the RED Raiders (Texas Tech), but hopefully can do better against the BLUE Raiders. Middle Tennessee’s best player, PF Charles Robinson who was averaging 12.4 ppg and 9.4 rpg2 tore his Achilles two weeks ago. But SG Clarence Davis is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 17.4 ppg. Sa good team but played a much softer pre-conference schedule than did we. This was a strange game…some big swings as both teams went on runs at various points in the game. We led early by as much as 8 points, but then let the Blue Raiders came back to edge ahead in the middle portion of the first half. We then again pulled away to lead 40-33 at the break. We held onto the lead for the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half, but then Middle Tennessee surged and led by 5 points with 6 minutes to go. Our D then tightened allowing us to come back and sprint to a 76-66 win. Chris Broussard—22 pts, 5 stl; George Zinn—13 pts, 2 stl; Kirk Reeves—12 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast. [11-4, 1-0, 1st place tie]
