Jan. 13: Milwaukee Panthers (10-2, 1-0) @ #24 Indiana Hoosiers (11-4, 1-0)

Terry Morillo: Milwaukee’s starting guards, Peter White and Gene McDyess, have combined to average 33.4 ppg and are hitting over 50% of their FG’s, nearly 50% of their 3’s, and 87% of their FT’s. The Panthers rolled off a bunch of victories, but have only played one game on the road (which they lost). Milwaukee held a small lead until we overtook them with 8 minutes to go in the first half. By the end of the half we led 36-29 and were controlling the boards and playing solid defense. We pulled further ahead as the 2nd half progressed and stormed to a 72-55 whipping of the Panthers. Chris Broussard—19 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl; Kirk Reeves—14 pts, 8 reb, 3 stl; Jason Collier—11 pts, 3 reb. [12-4, 2-0, 1st place tie]

Ramon Montez: Just a few points separated the 2 teams throughout the entire 1st half during which there were 15 lead changes. At halftime we were ahead 37-34. We edged further ahead as the 2nd half proceeded and finished with a 72-62 victory. Chris Broussard—20 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast; Kirk Reeves—13 pts, 5 reb; Jason Collier—10 pts, 6 reb. Jan. 20: #21 Indiana Hoosiers (13-4, 3-0) @ Akron Zips (9-5, 1-2)

Mike McMillan: We came into this game as a 1 point underdog. We poured it on in the first half. leading by 17 we closed out the half on top 40-30. The Zips began to whittle down our lead with 13 minutes left in the game and down 70-68, Akron got the ball inside for a reverse layup that tied the game and sent it to overtime. In the OT, the two teams traded the lead all the way up to the end. But we had the ball for the final possession and with the score tied, we worked the ball around the perimeter trying to work it inside. When that failed, Brett Mosley put up a prayer as time was expiring. The ball bounced off the rim and up against the glass before settling down through the cylinder to give us a stunning 80-78 overtime victory. We outscored the Zips 30-14 in the paint and pulled down 39 rebounds to their 27. We’ve now won 7 straight games. Chris Broussard—15 pts, 4 ast; George Zinn—14 pts, 12 reb, 3 ast, 2 blk; Kirk Reeves—14 pts, 7 reb, 2 blk; Brett Mosley—10 pts, 3 ast. [14-4, 4-0, 1st place]

Jan. 24: Illinois State Redbirds (6-10, 1-3) @ #17 Indiana Hoosiers (14-4, 4-0)

Ramon Montez: We got a lead pretty early in this game and then never gave it up. By the half we were in command 46-30. Our lead grew to 26 points in the 2nd half and then we played our entire bench and eased our way to the finish for a 79-64 win. We tossed in 60% of our FG attempts. Chris Broussard—21 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast; George Zinn—15 pts, 4 reb. [15-4, 5-0, 1st place]

Jan. 27: #17 Indiana Hoosiers (15-4, 5-0) @ Utah Utes (10-7, 4-1)

Terry Morillo: This was to be one of our toughest conference games. We needed to win it to stay in sole possession of 1st place. After falling behind at the beginning of the game, we came back to go ahead by 9 points midway through the first half. Utah rallied, though, and tied us at 27-27 as the half ended. We exchanged the lead several times in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd ha but then edged ahead. The Utes played us tough but we were able to hold onto a very small lead for the remainder of the game and scored a slim 63-60 road win. George Zinn-12 pts, 8 reb, 3 stl, 2 blk; Brian Valdez—10 pts; 2 ast, 2 blk; Ray Richardson—8 pts; Martin Towers—7 pts. [16-4, 6-0, 1st place]

Ken Yamoto, co-head coach

Good news…all 3 of our 4-star recruits easily exceeded our SAT minimum. So our recruiting efforts are complete for this year.

Bad news…In our last game, PF Kirk Reeves went down hard. We thought he’d just possibly sprained his wrist, but xrays revealed he has a broken hand and will be out of action most likely the rest of the season. It’s never good when you lose your second highest scorer (12.9 ppg) and second highest rebounder (4.9 rpg) who is also very strong defensively. We have some good depth inside, but I don’t see anyone who can supplant what Kirk was giving us. To make things worse C George Zinn is complaining about leg pain and SF Johnny Lubeck has a sore knee.

Jan. 31: Yale Bulldogs (12-5, 4-2) @ #16 Indiana Hoosiers (16-4, 6-0)

Mike McMillan: With Kirk Reeves unable to play due to a broken hand, we started Jason Collier at PF and played him and Brian Valdez more than we had been in our earlier games. Both played well. We were on top most of the first half and by a 39-36 score at the break. With Chris Broussard gunning in shots from all over the court, we expanded our lead to 17 in the 2nd half and put away the Bulldogs 82-70. Broussard hit 13 of 17 from the field including canning all 3 of his 3 point attempts. Chris Broussard—33 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast; Brian Valdez—13 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 3 blk; Jason Collier—8 pts, 3 reb, 3 ast. [17-4, 7-0, 1st place]

Feb. 3: George Mason Patriots (10-9, 3-4) @ #16 Indiana Hoosiers (17-4, 7-0)

Ramon Montez: We had a real tough time shaking the Patriots in the first half. After 8 lead changes in a defensive battle, we took a 24-20 lead to the locker room. We weren’t able to move much ahead for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, but then we went on an 8-0 run to put us up by 11 points. The defensive dam broke for both teams but we held George Mason off to win 71-60. Our win streak now stands at 11 games. Jason Collier—10 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk; Marin Towers—10 pts; George Zinn—9 pts, 2 ast; PG Brett Mosley—9 pts; Brian Valdez—4 pts, 7 reb. [18-4, 8-0), 1st place]

Feb. 7: #13 Indiana Hoosiers (18-4, 8-0) @ Florida State Seminoles (14-5, 6-2)

Ken Yamoto: This was an extremely close game with 20 lead changes. We were behind 36-33 at the break. The lead went back-and-forth through the 2nd half…that is until the Seminoles shot past us with 5 minutes remaining and never let us come back. We ended up losing by a final score of 74-68. The loss cut our lead over 2nd place Florida State and #20 ranked Richmond to just 1 game in Conference F. George Zinn—18 pts, 6 reb; Brett Mosley—12 pts, 4 ast; Brian Valdez—8 pts, 5 reb. [18-5, 8-1, 1st place]

Feb. 10: Tennessee Volunteers (16-5, 5-4) @ #13 Indiana Hoosiers (18-5, 8-1)

Terry Morillo: I expected this to be a tough game, but our guys shook away the Volunteers early in the first half and stayed ahead the rest of the way to lead 37-32 at halftime. Our D clamped down on Tennessee in the 2nd half and we steadily left the Volunteers in our dust. We hit 50% of our shots and cruised to an easy 74-53 victory. We forced Tennessee to make 30 turnovers. George Zinn—17 pts, 4 reb, 2 stl; Brett Mosley—10 pts, 5 ast, 2 stl; Brian Valdez—10 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk; Ray Richardson—10 pts, 3 reb; Calvin Heard—9 pts, 2 ast, 3 stl; Jason Collier—6 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 3 blk. [19-5, 9-1, 1st place]
