9/3: Miss Atwood, Arthur, and I went for dinner at the hotel in town, and then went for a leisurely evening stroll. We discussed basketball some, but also discussed Arthur's work at the Smithfield bank and Trust, and Alma's job at the haberdashery. It was a very nice evening.
"Ted, I'm wondering if I might have a little chat with you."
"I'm your Athletic Director. We chat every day."
"This is of a personal nature."
"Ah. Certainly."
"Well... As you know I have no family... I need some advice."
"Sure. On a personal matter?"
"Yes... You may know that I've been courting Alma Atwood."
"Are you kidding? It's the talk of Smithfield. Everybody knows it."
"Great! The joys of living in a small town! Well, we have only been seeing each other for a short time but I'm assuming I need to make a decision very soon."
"About what?"
"Well, if I continue to court her the expectation will be that I will propose marriage."
"You are probably very close to that point already, if not there. Why? Are you not planning to do that?"
"That's the problem. Miss Atwood is a perfectly delightful young woman and she would make a wonderful wife, I am sure."
"But?"
"But, would it be fair to her? I work very long hours. I'm away on basketball business often. Could I give her the attention a wife expects?"
"Jake, the average man probably works at least 10 hours a day, and 5 hours on Saturday. His work is physically grueling. When he gets home from work he doesn't have the energy to give his wife much attention. Alma Atwood would be far better off with you than with those men."
"I don't see her marrying a working man. If I were not in the picture she would marry a business man."
"All right. And the business man would work at least as many hours. True, he would not be physically exhausted when he arrived at home, but he would likely be mentally exhausted. Miss Atwood has probably not given a single thought to worrying about how many hours you work or how often you're out of town. I would advise you to proceed with the relationship if you are interested in marrying her."
"Thank you, Ted. I appreciate the advice."
9/18: We get our #1, a PG, #90.
We have one or two challenges on the schedule but not many.
9/25: We lose all 3 recruits we had offered to.
10/2: No luck with recruits.
First day of practice.
11/12: Here's the lineup:
Senior Deon Jack is at PG. He's a third year starter.
Junior Art Cary is at SG. He's a 2nd year starter.
#3 guard is junior Time Eshe, a transfer from Merrimack. #4 is junior Curt Chad who was our #3 last season. #5 is Marc Mill, a senior transfer from UNLV where he started for the last 2 years. He was unimpressive in practice and in the exhibition games, which was disappointing.
Junior Fly York is at SF. He's really out of position here but he needs to start.
Junior Joel King, who started at George Washington last season, is at PF.
Cris Mack, a senior, started at Texas A & M for the last two seasons. He's in the middle, and may be our best player.
#1 big off the bench again this season is senior Davy Hank. He has embraced this role and is excellent at it. He led us in scoring last year, from the bench!
#2 big is junior Ted Good,. #3 is frosh Sam Turn, who has a lot of potential. #4 is junior Ezra Sims, and last is frosh Sid True.
I continue to see Alma, always chaperoned by either her brother or Mrs. O'Brien.
"Mrs. O'Brien, I know nothing of these things. I must ask you to hold this in the strictest confidence, but I am planning to ask Arthur Atwood for his sister's hand in marriage. Is there a particular time when this becomes appropriate? We have been courting for a few months now."
"Well I am simply overjoyed to hear this, Mr. Last. I would think Christmas time might be a wonderful occasion."
"Yes, I suppose so. And perhaps a June wedding?"
"June, or sometime in the summer, yes. I am so pleased!"
"And Mrs. O'Brien, I would be disappointed if the news got abroad before I ask."
"I shall not utter a word to anyone, Mr. Last."
"Thank you, Mrs. O'Brien."
11/5: Alma, Arthur, and I went to another musical concert in Providence this evening. It featured a local band playing an evening of John Phillip Souza. The music was quite invigorating!
