Pac-12 Progression

Postby PointGuard » Fri Jan 17, 2020 12:59 am

This will be a complete sim following Pac-12 teams, coaches, and players each season (and for their careers) starting with the 2019-2020 season.

I am using DDSCB2019 and NCAAhoops’ Full College Mod v2.01 (with the 19-L import).

It will include recruiting results, a summary of pre-conference play and weekly results, highlights, and awards during Pac-12 conference play. It will also include overall stats and Pac-12 standings with team, coach, and player records and highlights.

So let's see how things unfold.

The only Pac-12 player nominated for the Norton Award was C Kevin French of UCLA.

Later #89 ranked PF Mike Jones chose Colorado, #98 ranked Mark Homer picked Oregon State, #49 ranked C Greg Tucker committed to Utah, and #60 ranked SG Yorgos Kasomoulis accepted Washington’s offer.

Preseason Polls:

Arizona at #14 was the only Pac-12 team to make either the Media or Coaches pre-season Top 25.

Week 2:

Southern Cal used a tenacious defense to beat Colorado 50-43 with the Buffaloes hitting just 28% of their shots and turning the ball over 20 times.

Week 3:

Arizona State’s defense befuddled Arizona in the first half and the Sun Devils, led by SF Pat Voskuhl’s 28 points and 11 boards defeated Arizona 68-60.
Oregon State’s dynamic duo (SF Chris Shumpert, 22 points, 9 rebounds) and PG Ivan Greer (20 points, 9 assists) led the Beavers to a 79-57 humbling of Washington.
UCLA needed all of SG Chris Sheppard’s 31 points to edge Oregon 79-77 in Eugene.
SF Terry Haslem of Arizona had 22 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists as the Wildcats dropped Colorado 79-57.
Guard Brian Turner came off the bench to drop in 28 points (10 of 14 FGs, 8 of 10 3 pointers) in 14 minutes of play as Washington State came from behind in the 2nd half to overcome Wasington’s C Tony Collins (25 points, 11 rebounds).

Player of the Week honors went to Arizona State’s Pat Voskuhl (50 points, 18 rebounds) and the Freshman Player of the Week was Josh Wallace (31 points, 12 boards) of Colorado.

One-third of the way through conference play #23-ranked Arizona (5-1) remains in first place just a game ahead of Colorado, Arizona State, Oregon State and UCLA. California is in the basement with a 0-6 conference record and is 1-14 for the entire season and has the dubious honor of holding an 11 game losing streak. After winning their first conference game, Oregon has now lost 5 straight games, although 3 of those have been by 3 or less points.

Week 4:

Arizona State’s SF Pat Voskuhl poured in 35 points as the Sun Devils thumped Washington 77-67.
In a game with 17 lead changes and 10 ties and in which neither team had more than a 7 point lead, Washington State edged California 77-73.
PG Jordie Jackson’s 20 points and 8 assists wasn’t enough for Arizona to weather a staunch defense by Washington in the 2nd half as they Huskies, behind C Tony Collins’ 23 points and 8 rebounds, pulled away to defeat the Wildcats by a convincing 85-71 score. The Huskies scored 40 points in the paint.
Arizona State had to hang on at the end of the game to win a 67-63 squeaker over Washington State as PF Ed Dabbert scored 22 for the Sun Devils.
UCLA’s C Kevin French had another solid game with 17 points and 14 boards as the Bruins squashed California 93-58.
Oregon State led by C Rahsaan Fisher’s 25 points crushed Southern Cal 90-68.
SG Bob Williams scored 31 points for Stanford as the Cardinal defeated a stubborn Utah team 83-76.

Arizona’s starting C John Rencher (10.8 ppg and 10.8 rpg) broke his foot and likely won’t be back on the court before the NCAA Tournament, thus jeopardizing the Wildcats efforts to win the Pac-12 crown. #22 ranked Arizona (6-2 is now tied for 1st with UCLA (which has a 5 game win streak) and Arizona State (holders of a 4 game win streak) with Colorado and Oregon State just one game behind. Cal’s loss streak extended to 13 games.

Arizona State’s Pat Voskuhl (47 points and 15 rebounds) captured his 3rd straight Pac-12 Player of the Week award. Voskuhl is now averaging 20.1 ppg this season. The Freshman Player of the Week was Bernie Cook (35 points) of Oregon.

Kentucky (18-1) is #1 in both polls followed by Michigan State (18-2), Duke (17-2), and North Carolina (15-4).

UCLA’s C Kevin French made the cut for the Top 30 for the Norton Award.

Week 5:

After trailing by as much as 23 points, Arizona State stormed back in the 2nd half and just ran out of time losing 67-66 at UCLA. SF Pat Voskuhl tossed in 26 points for the Sun Devils.
California finally broke their losing streak with a solid 83-63 victory over Oregon.
SF Derek King had a big game with 29 points and 10 rebounds for Southern Cal as the Trojans beat Stanford 74-63.
Washington didn’t let Utah’s PG Jimmy Tyndell’s 26 points keep them from winning surprisingly easily by a final score of 71-60.
Visiting UCLA rolled over Arizona 79-70 as the Bruins’ SG Chris Sheppard scored 32 points and C Kevin French added 15 points and 17 rebounds. The win catapulted UCLA (8-2) into sole possession for 1st place in the Pac-12, a game ahead of Arizona State, Oregon State and #25 ranked Arizona.

Derek King (49 points and 16 rebounds) of Southern California was the Pac-12 Player of the Week and the Freshman Player of the Week was Arizona’s Charlie Wilson (31 points).

Week 6:

Oregon stomped Arizona 85-67 behind SF Nick Minor’s 25 points.
Both Washington State and Southern Cal applied exceptionally strong defense in OT as the Cougars hit a buzzer beater to come away with a 74-73 victory.
UCLA’s SG Chris Sheppard (27 points) and C Kevin French (20 points and 12 rebounds) combined to put away Utah 73-64.
California’s turn around continued as SF David Johnson scored 21 and PG Andre Bush added 20 and the Golden Bears scored 57 second half points and beat Washington 89-74.
Although SG Chris Sheppard scored 28 points, the rest of the UCLA team failed offensively and Southern Cal stopped the Bruins 73-65 with the Trojans’ SG Khalid Scales scoring 20.
With C Andre McDermott scoring 21 and hauling down 7 boards, Utah opened an 18 point lead and then had to hang on as Oregon made a late run before losing 86-81 to the Utes.

UCLA (9-3) maintained a one-game lead over Oregon State, Arizona State and Arizona as Pac-12 teams slogged towards mediocrity. None are now within the Top 25 in the polls.

Chris Sheppard scored 55 points for UCLA this past week to be named the Pac-12 Player of the Week but sprained his ankle and will likely miss a game or two. The Freshman Player of the Week was Oregon’s Nick Minor with 42 points and 7 steals and 3 blocks.

Two-thirds of the way through the conference schedule, Arizona State’s SF Pat Voskuhl (19.4 ppg), Washington’s C Tony Collins (19.2 ppg), and UCLA’s SG Chris Sheppard (18.8 ppg) are fighting it out to lead the conference in scoring. UCLA’s C Kevin French looks to have the rebounding crown in hand with 11.8 rpg since Arizona’s C John Rencher (10.8 rpg) is sidelined with an injury. Washington’s PG Peter Thomas and Washington State’s PG Jonathan Smith are tied for the assists lead wiht both averaging 5.0 apg.
