A former high school role player, Coach W was always interested in the strategic and management sides of the game of basketball. A native Virginian, Coach W has been inspired by Tony Bennett's turn-around job at the University of Virginia and decided to quit his full time job at the age of 28 to follow his passion and become a high school basketball coach. After seven years of building one of the top high school programs in the state, Coach W has decided to go all-in on his dreams of becoming a big time college basketball coach. Several small D-II and D-III colleges and larger high school and prep programs had been courting Coach W for the past several years, but he finally received an offer that seemed appealing enough to take the leap.

Coach W will join the Longwood Lancers as their new head coach, effective May 1, 2019. He brings a staff of former high school coaches made up of Marty McGillan - the player development guru, Austin Shaver - the recruiter, and Donovan Williams - a generalist with a tilt towards recruiting. Together, these four will try to elevate the Longwood program from the doldrums of the Big South.

The 2019-2020 Longwood Lancers are anchored underneath by Senior PF Marcus Neely, Freshman PF Erik Green, and Senior SF Jermaine Hanson. Senior SG Isaac Paben and Senior PG Paul Lilley round out the lineup for the Lancers.

There are big expectations for Longwood this year, with the rumor that the Longwood board has set Coach W's season goal to be winning the conference championship. That's certainly a tall ask of a new coach inheriting a team that has struggled to place in the top half of the conference in recent years.

As of today, November 6, 2019, several teams have announced new recruiting signees. Longwood has had a tougher go of it, offering and revoking several scholarships and seeing several rumored targets end up at other teams. With 5 scholarships available, it would seem that recruiting should be a high priority for Coach W. Rumor has it that 1* PG prospect Bo Romano of Mt. Pleasant High School in Delaware has been offered by Longwood and that Longwood is currently considered the front runner. We have also received word that Longwood has recently extended offers to 2* SF prospect A.J. Guinn of Tygarts Valley in West Virginia, 2* PF Larry Mitchell of Western Branch in Chesapeake, VA, and 2* PF Matt Taylor of Pound, VA.

The Longwood Lancers (0-0) started the season off at home against the Drexel Dragons (0-0). The starting lineup for the Lancers is below.

The Lancers got off to a hot start despite their star player Marcus Neely picking up two early fouls. The score at half was Longwood 45, Drexel 29. Bobby Jones and Kwame Williams had big first halfs, scoring most of their points during the period.

The second half saw the scoring more evenly spread, and Drexel's defense stepped up to hold Longwood to only 26 second half points. However, it wasn't enough as Longwood went on to win 71 - 60.

After the game Coach W was available for a few questions.

Q: Coach, what was it like coaching in your first collegiate game?
A: It was definitely an exciting experience. I'm glad we were able to get the W. We had strong support from our fans and that's great. We're going to need it this year as we continue to work towards our goal of winning the conference.

Q: Were there any surprises out there today?
A: Yea I was pleasantly surprised by Kwame Williams game tonight. We had no doubt that Kwame had it in him, but it was great to see him get out there and prove it. We're going to need a lot from our seniors this season and Kwame did a great job of setting the tone for the season with his performance tonight.

Q: We saw a lot of Erik Green early tonight, was that part of the plan or due to Neely's foul trouble?
A: Well that was mostly due to Neely's foul trouble. We had hoped to get Erik a decent amount of time, but he is still picking up the system obviously, with this game being his first collegiate appearance and all. He did a great job though, so we'll try to find him more minutes in future games as well.

The Longwood Lancers (1-0) went on the road for their second game of the season to face ACC foe Wake Forest (0-1). Surprisingly, the Lancers were the favorites over the Demon Deacons. Unfortunately this time the prediction didn't hold up and the Lancers headed back home looking to learn from their first road battle.

The Lancers jumped out front early despite some careless ball handling. However, by halftime Wake Forest had caught up after going on a momentum-swinging run to close out the first half. Longwood again suffered from some early foul trouble with Marcus Neely, Jermaine Hanson, and Bobby Jones all picking up two fouls before the half. The score at the half was Wake Forest 44, Longwood 40. Coach W didn't seem to be a big fan of the high scoring action as he used two of his timeouts early in the first half and was seen screaming at his team about their carelessness with the ball.

Coach W's words didn't seem to have much effect as the second half didn't look much different from the first. Wake Forest came out on fire with senior SF Jim Stoneking leading the way and keeping his hot hand going. Longwood continued to struggle with turnovers and their conservative 2 point approach found their offense being outpaced by Wake's 3 point run and gun offense. Even Freshman PF Erick Green's emergence in the second half from beyond the arc couldn't save the Lancers as they suffered their first defeat.

Coach W took a few questions before hopping on the bus back to Farmville.

Q: You looked intense in the first half, what were you trying to get across to your players?
A: We needed to slow down, control the pace, and play with poise. We had way too many turnovers and were letting them dictate the tempo out there. I'm not pleased with the turnovers considering our senior leadership at the guard position.

Q: Again a lot of Erick Green, and a pretty impressive performance in the second half. What are your thoughts?
A: It wasn't our intention to have Erick playing so many minutes this early in the season, but I guess now is as good a time as any to get some more experience. He still has a ways to go with learning our system, so we're keeping a close eye on him. Towards the end of the game we loosened up the offense some to try to get some more looks and he really took advantage and started sneaking out to hit some deep shots. I hope he can start finding ways to get some of those looks within the flow of our normal offense.

Q: Jim Stoneking put on quite a performance. Were you expecting that from him?
A: No to be honest we were more focused on Bryan Cross which may have been a mistake. Stoneking did a great job of getting to the line in the first half, I think he went 8-8 from the stripe which is pretty amazing. We finally made some adjustments and started doubling him for the last ten minutes which seemed to help some, but then Cross started getting some looks. They're a tough team and I think they'll cause some problems in the ACC later this year.

Longwood (1-1) took on Chattanooga (0-1) at home in what appeared to be a mismatch from the get go. There were only 3 lead changes in the whole game and Longwood led by nearly 20 for most of the second half. Turnovers seem to still be an issue for the Lancers as they coughed it up 21 times against the Mocs, but good shooting and a great 3 point performance by Todd Marshack was enough to leave Chattanooga in the dust.

Coach W wasn't available for a Q&A following this win, but in his post game comments he had the following to say. "It was a pretty solid game all around. Marshack showed up big with some threes to help us out. I'm still disappointed with the turnovers, and getting more concerned about Marshack's high turnover rate as our starting point guard. Paben surprised me with 6 turnovers in this one as he had been one of our steadiest performers. These are all things we'll be working on in practice. I'm pretty content with the shot selection and a little suprised we didn't get more threes to go down. Glad we were able to get some of our younger guys some time on the court, they've been working hard in practice and it's nice to get them some time to shine."

Longwood (2-1) took on Charleston (1-1) in their last home game before a 4 game road trip. The game started out neck and neck with Longwood looking a little flat after their blowout victory over Chattanooga and Charleston pumped up after a big road win over Mississipi. Charleston got a lot of favorable calls from the officials in the first half which led to a significant number of free throw opportunities, which led to them being up 47-39 at the half.

Coming out from halftime, it looked like Coach W made some adjustments defensively to loosen up a bit on defense. Charleston extended the lead to 15 at one point in the second half, but the second half adjustments resulted in fewer whistles from the referees and with 7 minutes to go Longwood started to mount a bit of a comeback. The Lancers started to string together some possessions and we saw Coach W stick with a lineup of Lilly, Paben, Hanson, Green, and Williams down the stretch.

With less than a minute to go in the game, Lilley hit a pull up jumper to bring cut the Charleston lead to just one point. The next trip down the court saw Lilley intentionally foul the Charleston point guard, Isaac Punt who went to the line looking to extend the lead. Under intense pressure and on the road, Punt missed both free throws. At this point, Coach W was out of timeouts and could do nothing but watch as his team came down the court looking to go ahead for the first time since before halftime. With just a few passes, they found Green open on the perimeter, he pulled up from 3 with plenty of time left on the clock and drained it!

Charleston was now down 2 with about 7 seconds to play. They inbounded to Punt who was quickly fouled by Lilley. After the game, Coach W clarified that this was a miscommunication on his part and he didn't get the call in in time to not foul. Regardless, Punt had a chance to go to the line, tie the game, and redeem his previous two missed shots. But just like that he missed the first, and made the second. Longwood inbounded the ball and ran the clock out on a nail biting victory. Coach W was in good spirits after the game, but mentioned they still have a lot of work left to do on limiting turnovers.

Longwood (3-1) took on #16 Arkansas (5-1) in their first matchup this year against a ranked opponent. Arkansas had lost one game earlier in the year against #6 BYU which had temporarily knocked them out of the polls, but after an 81-49 blowout of Northeastern they climbed back into the Top 25 at #16. Arkansas' best player is JR PG Corey Adkins who came into the game averaging 25 PPG and 6 APG. Their second leading scorer and leading rebounder is FR C Drew Watkins at 11 PPG and 7.5 RPG.

our gameplan was going to be to try to slow things down.

I thought we did an admirable job against Adkins, holding him to 17 pts on
about 50% shooting. Watkins on the other hand ran us out of the gym in the
first half. 19 points at halftime, wow. What a performance for a freshman.
We had to switch to a soft zone in the second half to slow them down inside.
The switch to zone seemed to startle them, and for good reason - I'm not a
zone coach. It pained me to make the call to switch to it, but we had to
try anything we could to give us a shot. The zone slowed them in the second
half, particularly Watkins who only scored 2 in the second half.

Our team put up a heck of a fight to hang in within 20 for most of the game.
We got it down to almost a 10 point game with about 5 minutes left, but
couldn't close the gap. Everhart came in gunning in the second half and drained
3 three's in a row. Green had a pretty impressive offensive performance. I've
been impressed with Hanson's work in the last two games and I'm trying to find
more ways to work him into the lineup. He's a little undersized at the 3 when
we play major conference teams, so I tried working him into the 2 spot a little
this game and he seemed to adjust well. I was disappointed with Paben tonight,
he didn't really show much and was playing scared. Marshack is still turning it
over far too much and if it doesn't turn around soon we may need to start
considering making some adjustments. The biggest thing holding our team back
is turnovers, we committed another 19 tonight. Our shooting is crazy good though.
