Kennesaw State (1-0) @ Southern California (0-0)

A Reggie Lewis triple put us up 3-0 on USC with 18:49 to go, and Chris Earl added one a minute later to make our lead 8-0 with 17:41 remaining in the half! The Trojans had not calculated on us being a tough opponent for their home opener, and we tore them to shreds early, and with 14:27 to play we were still ahead 16-6. More impressively, when USC fought back and tried to make it a game we were the ones clamping down, rebuilding our lead to 29-20 with 7:22 left, and by halftime we were firmly in control. Halftime: Kennesaw State 40, Southern California 31.

We continued to shoot better than 40 percent from the field as the second half got going, and with 14:48 to play we held a solid 51-37 lead on the struggling Trojans. Three minutes later we led by 20 and were on the verge of blowing out a major-conference opponent on their own court! USC tried to fight back in this one but they were too late. We held tough defensively and coasted to the biggest win in school history to date, beating the Trojans on the road 75-61!

That oughtta wake some people up!

Oregon State (1-1) @ Kennesaw State (2-0)

Back at home for the first of four games before our big December road-stand, we hit the court in front of a nearly sold-out convention center, blitzing to a 10-2 lead within the first two minutes on the poor Beavers. We led 28-13 with 9:32 remaining, and by halftime this one was well in hand, us ahead 41-22. The second half started out slower offensively, but we didn't let up an inch on defense, leading 51-32 on the Beavers with 12:15 to play. Larue Ragin continued to play like the Norton candidate he is, and I suspect it won't be long before a large swath of the country knows his name. We easily improved to 3-0 with a big 74-53 win.

Iona (0-3) @ Kennesaw State (3-0)

There was never a point in this game where the Gaels looked like they could run with us. We led 27-13 with 11:09 to go in the half and coasted to lead 57-28. The remainder was a beautiful blur as we stumped our opponent and revved up an already rabid fanbase with an 87-54 victory.

North Florida (2-2) @ Kennesaw State (4-0)

The Ospreys were no match for us early as we blew them away 18-2 with 14:16 remaining in the first half, shooting a staggering 63 percent from the field! We led 55-26 at the half and the remainder was by-the-numbers Owl basketball as we put them to sleep 95-62.

Ball State (5-0) @ Kennesaw State (5-0)

The Cardinals gave us our first fight of the year, pulling ahead 8-11 with 13:51 to go and in general showing no fear on our court. Damion Christie put us back on top though with 13:26 to go thanks to a fast-break deuce that gave us a 12-11 lead, and Chris Earl nailed a triple that made it 17-13 with 12:05 left. We ground them down from there with solid fundamental basketball, and by halftime our lead seemed quite secure. Halftime: Ball State 22, Kennesaw State 41.

Ball State shot well early, but we held them off defensively and made sure they never saw any light at the end of the tunnel. With 13:22 to go we led 53-36, and with 7:22 to play we were ahead 66-41. From there it was a matter of holding them off as we remained undefeated, winning 92-62.

Kennesaw State (6-0) @ Minnesota (3-3)

We built a solid 12-3 lead on the Gophers but they weren't quick to die like so many others we've played … a quick 5-0 run cut our lead to 12-8 with 13:35 remaining, and their home crowd was formidable as they willed their team back in. With 11:39 to go they took a 14-16 lead, and we were in a dogfight. Larue Ragin put us back up 22-21 with 9:03 left in the half, but Minnesota pulled away late, building a seven point lead with 5:38 to play. Strong shooting down the stretch kept us from being blown out, but we had our work cut out for us at the break. Halftime: Kennesaw State 38, Minnesota 44.

Minnesota crushed us to start the half, outscoring us 16-6 in the first five minutes. Larue Ragin tried to keep us in the game singlehandedly but the rest of the team went ice cold, and with 6:01 to go we still trailed the Gophers 64-74. We never quit, fighting to within five within the last three minutes, but we were just outplayed by a team with more depth than us. Minnesota pulled away to win 75-85.

Kennesaw State (6-1) @ Alabama-Birmingham (3-4)

We held our own defensively against UAB early, up 10-4 with 13:27 to go in the half. And as the half progressed we put on a dominating performance, leading 32-22 at the half based on our strong defense. They of course fought back in the second half, however, and with 12:20 to go we were knotted 42-42. We fought hard the remainder of the way, but despite our best efforts UAB danced just out of our reach. We lost this one in the end 64-68, heading into the Georgia game on a two-game skid and feeling like we'd just let this one slip out of our hands.

Worse, Larue Ragin suffered a concussion in the second half, and will be out 10 days, meaning he won't play against Georgia. That's a really big hit to our depth for such a key non-conference game. Damion Christie will get the start in his stead.

Kennesaw State (6-2) @ Georgia (4-1)

Georgia moved up to Conference “C” this year, and in that regard they remain the toughest team w face each year from a conference disparity standpoint. I just see it as a chance for us to show our rival we can compete with them year in, year out. The last two games we've played showed us on the verge of big things. Now we just need to find a way to win.

Unfortunately we played like absolute hell the first few minutes of the game, and that set the tone. Georgia ran away to a 2-12 lead on us with 15:35 to play, and psychologically that was a back-breaker. Without Ragin to come in and stabilize our starters, we had to work that much harder to find a way back into this one, and in a hostile environment to boot. We trailed 16-28 with 8:25 remaining in the first half, but we didn't quit. Instead we dug deep and with 4:34 left we were within eight, down 25-32. We trailed at the half but had not laid down and died. Halftime: Kennesaw State 33, Georgia 42.

Georgia led comfortably early, as we struggled to make headway against their stifling defense, trailing 40-56 with 12:56 remaining in the game. Damion Christie hit a triple with 8:15 to go pulling us within 11, down 53-64, and with 5:42 to go Earl nailed a tough jumper to make it an eight point game, down 59-67. Reggie Lewis got a brilliant dunk with 4:34 left, pulling us within 61-67, but Lewis then fouled out at the 4:00 mark, and our offense died there. We'd go on to lose 65-75.

Northern Kentucky (4-5) @ Kennesaw State (6-3)

We didn't get much fight out of the Norse early, building an 18-11 lead on them with 9:07 to play in the half. By halftime we led 40-30 and we were nicely in control from there. Ragin got into foul trouble, which hurt, but our other players stayed in control and we were able to build a 53-40 lead with 14:04 left in the game. We opened it up well from there and put Northern Kentucky away down the stretch to win this one 85-65.

Richmond (2-8) @ Kennesaw State (7-3)

We ran out to a quick 18-7 lead on the Spiders with 14:24 to go in the first half, and by halftime we had completely shut them down 43-25. They never were able to do much from there, as we out-defended them en route to an 84-59 win.

Player of the Game: Reggie Lewis (23 pts 9 reb 4 ast 1 stl 1 blk)
Honorable Mentions: Larue Ragin (22 pts 8 reb 3 ast) Josh Griffin (16 pts 10 reb)
