2020-21 A Season in Review

Transition is OK? Isnt it?

We knew it would be tough but this year was a kick in the gut to the program as the regression from last years effort saw the team go 10-10 in the Big-Ten, 17-13 overall after a mixed bag of non-Conference performances.

Losses to established programs such as Louisiana State, Oregon State and Butler (Sunshine Shootout) set the tone for the upcoming season as wins over minor schools did little to favor Purdue in the rankings.

Things didnt get any better once Conference play began. Illinois and Michigan put us 0-2 and it soon became 2-4 as Penn State and Ohio State added more woe to Purdue, as wins over Maryland and Wisconsin appeared to be a false start.

Chadderson II at this point remarked "We are masters of our own downfall. There isnt much we have done well so far and thats disappointing as when you practice you expect the players to put that into place on gameday. We arent doing that, I feel some players are holding back and they will need to be careful as next year we are already in a position to shake things up"

With Chad-Chads words ringing in their ears, 3 wins in 4 got things back on course. Maryland fell again 69-48, then revenge over Michigan 88-70 saw all 5 starters score double-digits, led by Roy Jones (21). We would add wins over Indiana and Illinois, but somehow fell into another losing rut, this time 3 straight defeats on our own court left us at 6-9 and staring down a barrell.

It would require a miracle of sorts to get back on track, that would come with big wins at Northwestern, before beating the #5 Buckeyes 77-69 and #24 Minnesota 72-64 as we moved to 9-9. Our final 2 games saw us split a loss vs #4 Iowa, before our 2nd win over Indiana saw us claim 5th in the standings on the back of a .500 record.

A harsh dose of reality for Purdue before Tournament play. Things would need to improve as the fear of 'one and done' will loom large for the Boilermakers.

It hadnt been the best of seasons but at 10-10 we still had a shot at the Big-Ten Tournament, albeit having to play in. With the team needing to win to gain an automatic berth at the NCAA show, we would put together impressive wins over Nebraska (Harris 23pts / Floyd 24pts) and then over #24 Minnesota, as we moved into the Final 4.

There we would face Indiana a team we convincingly beat twice in Conference play, yet when it mattered we fell off a cliff, losing with a whimper shooting under 40% to miss out on a Championship game.

A less than stellar season left Purdue getting an at large slot in the play-in games at Dayton. That paired us up with Wisconsin, a team we had beat earlier in Conference play and a team like us who finished at 10-10 in the standings.

Unfortunately thats where our upper-hand ended as the Badgers led early and would at one point lead by 20. Brandon Duncan top scored for Wisconsin and although Josh Harris sank 20pts, we couldnt muster any kind of rally falling to a 63-76 loss and a premature exit from the Tournament.

"Ill be honest" said Chadderson II, "I have to take some of the blame here, we failed to recruit and it was essentially the same group of guys minus our 2 seniors taking on the challenge this time round. Next year we have alot of potential ready to use, this wont have done us any harm, you need to take setbacks and use them as a positive, I fully expect the guys who will return to suit up and be ready to compete at the business end of it all"

Goodbye Josh!
Harris goes out on a high; Big-Ten All 1st Team

Purdue say goodbye to a few of their most prominent players this year, none more so than Josh Harris who has led the scoring for the Boilermakers under Chadderson II's reign.

This year, although the team stuttered and spluttered its way through its schedule, Harris remained firm as a constant source of quality and was rewarded in his Senior year with a selection in the Big-Ten All 1st Team as the Conferences best SF.

Harris scored over 15ppg and led his team on rebounds, something not lost on the Head Coach... "Josh has been a huge presence for us, he stepped up and gave us leadership this year and its a shame his time has come to a close just as we have been able to add a few pieces that could push us that step closer".

Continuing he added "We look back on his time with fond memories but thats all it is now, ive told the guys who have returned, this is their time to shine, they have the chance to be that player for us and if we can get 5 or 6 who listen and step up, then who knows what ill be talking about this time next year!"

The Boiler'Shakers
Chadderson II changes backroom staff; Welcomes Recruits

Sometimes failure lights a spark that could ignite something special and Chad-Chad hopes thats the case as he overhauled his backroom staff at the Boilermakers, bringing in a pair of experienced faces to help gel the new look roster together.

First up, 62 year old Dickey Nutt comes in as 1st Asst. Nutt has over 20 years experience as a HC, primarily with Arkansas and has been about the game for nearly double that amount of time. Nutt will add a new dynamic to the staff, with Chadderson II saying "I had some great chats with Dickey, he has a huge knowledge of the game, teams and how to get the best out of players. We need something like that here, someone who can come straight in and work from the off, I can trust him and thats vital for me to move forward"

Alongside Nutt, comes in Jeff Lebo. Again a vastly experienced coach in College Basketball, although he has been out of the scene for a few years. Lebo will come in to help recruit for Purdue, a change of pace for the ex-Auburn HC who has over 300 career wins to his name.

Those coaching upgrades will be a welcome sight for Boilermaker fans, as they welcome in both Ben McCasland and Albert Bradley as Freshman, whilst last years transfer duo of Tracy and Brookhart will also be available to the Purdue coaching staff this season.

2021-22 A Season in Review

It was almost Gr'Eight?

"Believe in us" that was the rallying cry all year from Chadderson II as his new look Boilermakers took on the challenge of re-establishing themselves as something of a force in the Big-Ten.

Last years disappointment was firmly in the minds of all those involved and the pressure gauge has certainly turned up a notch on the young Head Coach. "I live for the pressure, I thrive in these moments" quipped Chadderson II, "We have had a positive approach to everything this year and with new coaches, new players, its got that feel of something special in the air"

Well he wasnt wrong, as Purdue turned things around in non-Conference play, starting out 3-0 before losing a squeaker to the NC State Wolfpack 54-55. A couple more losses would be inflicted on the relatively young team, with Connecticut and Belmont stirring things up, however in the Hoops for Troops tournament Purdue would be 'purring' as they downed Georgia St., St. Johns and Fresno as they routed the Bulldogs 81-49 to bring back a little success for the school on Christmas Day.

Conference play then started with a loss @ #11 Wisconsin, but that just ignited a reaction that saw Purdue put on 5 straight wins, as they stood proudly atop the Conference at 5-1 with the early run. The team then slumped and worried faces etched the teams bench as 3 losses on the spin (Minnesota, Penn St., Maryland) put serious doubts on the Boilermaker credentials as rumours of team fractions caused by the Freshman McCasland and Bradley began to surface.

Chadderson II immediately quashed any talk of dissent within his camp and put the team back into its winning mode, as they raced to 10 wins from their remaining 11 fixtures, including a 69-56 romp over #5 Wisconsin and a pair of wins over the Buckeyes to finish the schedule at 15-5 and a 2nd place finish in the Standings, giving them a #20 in the polls.

A stunning season for the Boilermakers, as Asst. Coach Dickey Nutt said "We knew we had something here to work with. All the kids want to learn, theres some leaders in there, some hard heads that like to butt together, yet we all followed the lead of Chad-Chad and went with the flow. Success can be there for this group, they just have to believe and grab it when the chance arises"

Into the Big-Ten Tournament and really it proved to be a chance wasted for the team as a win over Iowa was then snuffed out by Michigan State, who after being stuffed twice by Purdue in Conference play, would step up to win 61-74 en route to claiming the title for themselves.

The team had a dream and it could have been, Purdue came as close as they could to a real Cinderella effort in this years NCAA Tournament, driving into the Elite Eight before falling short against the St. Mary Gaels, giving up -a 35-28 HT lead to lose 63-70 in heartbreaking fashion.

Before that the Boilermakers had all the makings of a Championship run; Texas-Rio Grande were taken apart 72-50 in the opening round, then Baylor would also take a licking 73-51 as people began to take notice of the Purdue effort.

Villanova the number #1 seed from the bracket then saw their hopes dashed in the Sweet Sixteen 75-61 as there seemed little anyone could do to stop the steam express. Yet Purdue ran out of fuel at the wrong time and for all the talk of a fairytale season, it came to a disappointing end in the Final 8.

"Ive told the guys back there to keep their heads held high. They did themselves proud, me and my staff proud and the school proud. They had an opportunity to go that bit further, but sometimes you just miss out and those guys who will come back next year have a chance to put right those wrongs" Chad-Chad Chadderson II

Boiling Up Nicely
3 recruits add quality to already stacked Purdue

After last years run to the Elite 8, Purdue look to have added yet more quality and depth to their roster, as although the loss of Senior Dave Floyd will hurt, the incoming Karim Crawford, Donovan Watson and Danny Ahern add a bunch of scoring, height and power to the front court options available.

While Ben McCasland is likely to start becoming the leader of the team after his stellar Freshman campaign, its likely that FR Karim Crawford is to start as the teams new SF in the upcoming season. Danny Ahern adds height and size to give the team its future C in the making, as at 7'1 and 283lbs he is shaping up to be the dominant middle man for the team to build off.

Overall, its going to be a challenge for the team to match last years run, but expecations have been installed into Purdue and the best time to achieve success, is whilst success is still in your recent mindset.

Purdue have confirmed they will be looking at transfers this year with 2 potential additions coming in for next year as they remain committed to building something special under HC Chadderson II.
