PURDUE BOILERMAKERS

24 Big Ten Championships, a pair of Final Four Appearances (the last of which near on 4 decades ago) and something called a Helms Championship, but no one really cares about that. The Purdue Boilermakers are the team that haven't, cant or even wont.

This is where that ends (well at least it cant begin). The Boilermakers have had relative success under Matt Painter, 12 appearances at the tournament, even an Elite Eight run last time out, but times are a changing and Painter is out and in comes Chad-Chad Chadderson II, who? Yeah we dont know, but he has the looks, the balls and can charm a kiss from a Crocodile.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the story of Purdue and the Triple Chad'

The Talking Chad(s)

Image

In one of College Basketballs biggest twists of the summer, Purdue gambled everything they knew on...00 or as he is commonly known, Chad-Chad Chadderson II. The appointment came from left field and lets remember there are no fields in Basketball... sooo

"Im delighted to be here" stated Chadderson II. "There were conversations with the school board and Athletic Director and when the news broke that Matt (Painter) had been relived of his duties, then I knew my chance was waiting for me"

He continued "Now im here, im here to make my mark. Im a winner, ive been a winner and its what I do. Purdue are desperate for a Championship and im going to be that passion and driving force behind it. Believe to Achieve, thats what ill be drilling into the guys here and im sure we will all pull in the same direction to reach that goal"

Whatever the outcome here in Purdue, its sure to be a ride to remember. The Boilermakers are going to write headlines one way or another.

2019-20 A Season in Review

Attacking the BIG-TEN

Lets be honest, 5 straight winning seasons, 2 Big-Ten Championships and an Elite Eight appearance, thats how Matt Painter left the Boilermakers. This meant Chad-Chad Chadderson II had alot to live up to as he began his rebuilding process as Head Coach in Purdue.

The roster had a new look to it, hopes were pinned on Juniors Josh Harris and Roy Jones to help carry the team forward, but there were many questions to be answered.

Things started out badly, a preseason Tournament loss to New Mexico State was a convincing 73-82 and an immediate shock to the system. However the non-Conference schedule was alot kinder as Purdue would rack up 8 straight wins, 6 of which came at home, putting up notable scorelines on Bradley (79-53), Cal St. Northridge (92-63) before hitting the road and 100+ points in a thumping of the Providence Friars 106-77.

The team was sharing the love and Chad-Chad was feeling it, his 9-1 Boilermakers were hitting their stride. Harris and Jones averaging over 10pts, whilst the bench contributed as the lack of a superstar ensured a team effort was needed.

A gleaming Chadderson II said at the time "I came here to win and thats what we are proving. You can talk about the opposition but facts are we are 9-1 and going into Conference play with no pressure on us. We can keep it going, there are no reasons why we cant do the same to the teams in the Big-Ten and im confident when I say that"

Alas the good times had to come and Chadderson II would look to eat his own words, as Purdue struggled to find their rhythm. First up Penn State took care of business, as Purdue would lose their opening 3 road games, with #19 Maryland and #11 Wisconsin also handing out licks in unforgiving fashion (the former notching a 26pt romp).

But at home Purdue had more about them, Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska were beaten to even things at .500, before back to back road wins saw the Boilermakers move up the standings into a more respectable position. Wisconsin would then inflict the teams first (and only) home loss in Conference play, but a 5 game winning streak alleviated any pressure Chadderson II was under as the team climbed into contention to play in the Big-Ten Tournament.

A tight 61-60 win over #4 Ohio State would be a highlight in the teams schedule as they concluded their schedule on a 7-2 streak, although they would lose in OT at Northwestern to round off the season, leaving the 13-7 Boilermakers doing just enough to finish 4th in the Conference.

Into the Big-Ten Tournament and Indiana would be eliminated with ease 71-64 as the team had hopes of collecting a Championship. However Maryland had too much for them in the Semi Finals as a 53-66 loss was put down to tiredness by a beleaguered looking Chadderson II at the buzzer.

All this meant that the team had earned an #8 seed going into the NCAA Tournament and a matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers, who had finished 11-7 in the SEC (22-11 Overall). In a shootout, Purdue did enough to edge out the Vols' with Harris leading the way and driving Purdue into the 2nd round.

Yet the run would be cut short just as it begun. #2 Duke were one of the favourites for the whole thing and they showed that, dishing out the teams worst loss of the year, wiping Purdue up 66-91 in a harsh lesson as to how far away the Boilermakers are from winning it all.

The dream was over for this year, Chadderson II said "We had a shot, in fairness I think thats as far as this team could have took us under these circumstances. There is plenty left in the tank of these guys to take us closer and we will work on that, work on our flaws and come back stronger for another run"

Chad on Top!
Chadderson collects BIG-TEN honours; something special Boiling in Purdue

If team success evaded Chadderson II in his rookie year as a Head Coach, then individual awards did come his way. The 13-7 record racked up by Purdue put Chadderson II into the limelight and in the end that turned into winning the Big-Ten Coach of the Year award.

On accepting his honour he said "This is a stepping stone, just the start of what im trying to build here in Purdue. Theres more to come, we have to put our mark on this team and that will come in time with coaching and recruiting to fill the gaps

It may be a small step, but is this a sign of things to come for the Coach and Purdue in the long run?

New Year; New Hope
Transfers give Purdue something different

Re-tooling is not a word often used in College sports and for Purdue that was definitely the case as they had failed to get anyone to commit to the school the previous summer, leaving them in an awkward spot going through the off-season.

3 players would depart the ranks, Seniors Jimmy Newton and Mike Cleveland said their farewells, the former of which started all 31 games last time out, nabbing a team high 7.3RPG. Cleveland was less impressive and sought minor minutes off the bench in his final run with the Boilermakers.

They wouldnt be the only departures as Bo Raines called time on his Purdue life, opting to transfer out of the school due to differences with the coach, describing him as "An arrogant self centered coach who failed to recognise any talent who may take the emphasis off of him".

However Purdue would shake things up by adding a pair of transfers via Scholarships themselves. Geordie Tracy who was decent off the bench at Illinois, comes in as a 6'8 19 year old who has potential to run at either PF or C for the team. Whilst another Sophomore in Zach Brookhart also comes across to the Boilermakers, bringing with him a 12.3PPG, 5.0RPG record that saw him start 29 of 30 games for Nicholls State in his freshman year.

Both players will be subject to transfer restrictions and will see them sit out the remainder of the season, but hopes are they can blend and be ready for 21/22.

Verbal Commits
Purdue excited by commitments; Recruitment A+ say insiders

Last summer proved to be a drought for the Boilermakers as they essential bust on all their attempted recruiting, missing out due an indecisive and scatter-gun approach to things. This year things have been more on point as Chadderson II locked in his requirements and immediately saw his 2 preferred choices commit verbally to Purdue for the 21/22 season.

Albert Bradley (SF) out of Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (IN) was happy to commit and will bring his high scoring offense to Purdue, averaging over 17ppg in his recent year in High School. Alongside him the highly rated (#5 National) PG Ben McCasland also committed to Purdue. McCasland scores, assists and steals and is the high impact player that Purdue have been looking for in their offense.

Chadderson II said "Its exciting to get these boys to be a part of our program. We worked hard to impress them and in fairness they worked hard to impress us. All round you have to be excited to know you have 2 kids coming in next year that are going to be ready to go from the day they get here"

Another positive take for Purdue, who may well be ready to write this year off in preparation for the new look roster they will carry into 21/22.
