Shoot our way to success

Game #1

Postby RandyR17 » Thu Sep 03, 2020 9:00 pm

11/14/2019
@ NC-Asheville (0-0)

1st Half

Still a bit confused at first (actually I was the one confused as I try to get to know the players by their jersey numbers). Our first 2 FGs were in transition via NC.A's turnovers. And then we connected on our 1st triple (after 2 misses) at the 16:40 mark, courtesy of SF Mark Gaines. And then another 3 by Gaines. We also got an inside bucket from C Dupree Eschmeyer. And then SG Joel Woods' turn to hit a 3. By the 1st technical timeout, we're 3-7 3PT. Not a bad start offensively. Defense? Well, that's a different story
13:40, Up 17-15

We extended our lead to 7. PG Mark Collier and SG Frank Rickey getting joining the shootfest, each making a 3.
10:11, Up 26-19

NC.A keeping the score close because of their inside scoring; we need to do better. SG Joel Woods hits his 2nd triple; and hits another one! We're 7-17 3PT
5:26, Up 38-28

Even backup C Xavier Jefferson scores a 3! We got into penalty at the 3:14 mark. When starting C Dupree Eschmeyer went back to the game, he immediately gets 2 FGs down low. The spacing created by our shooters allow Eschmeyer to operate freely inside. NC.A rallied to cut their deficit to 2. We hit a couple more 3s in the last minute of the 1st half, to keep NC.A at bay.

Halftime, Up 51-46

SG Joel Woods leads all scorers with 12 pts, all from beyond the arc. Eschmeyer has 9. We're 10-24 3PT (42%)

Adjustments
- Exclusive m-m defense. NC.A is shooting 53% FG
- Surprisingly, we have 8 offensive rebounds. -1 on Off Crash, +1 on Def Crash

2nd half

(Take note: Even if you have the Shoot 3s box checked the entire 1st half, it will revert to unchecked by the start of the 2nd half. So I had it checked again)

4 early turnovers by NC.A. SG Joel Woods gets his 5th triple. We committed 4 fouls already
15:18, Up 58-49

SG Cedric Takaki is the 7th player from our side to make a 3 in this game. Takaki coming off the bench and immediately scored 5 pts (he was scoreless in the 1st half). Backup C Xavier Jefferson also making significant contributions from the bench, with 13 pts already. We're 12-31 3PT (39%)
10:52, Up 67-55

After NC.A cut their deficit to 10, we traded baskets. They hit a 2, we get back with a 3! Pace of the game (and scoring) has definitely increased, which is what we want to achieve.
7:17, Up 80-62

Our scoring has cooled off a bit. NC.A making a run. I called a TO to stop their momentum
2:29, up 83-72

Immediately after the TO, we went straight to C Dupree Eschmeyer, and he delivers with an inside play. With 1 and a half mins remaining, I instructed my team to slow down and stall the offense. NC.A had to give up fouls in succession just so we can go the line and stop the clock. We made some FTs to hold on and win the game

vs Texas-Rio Grande (0-2)

Opponent Notes
- TX.RG's SG Stephen Johnson averaging 20 ppg, 47% 3PT. But they hardly have another reliable scorer; team is averaging just 62 ppg

1st Half

After TX.RG scored the initial basket, we went on 18-0 run. PG Mark Collier scored 14 in that run, including a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc! TX.RG already with 4 turnovers. TX.RG forced to use a time out
15:36, Up 18-2

The last timeout didn't cool us down, esp Collier, as he drills another triple. Collier now has 17 pts including 5 triples
11:58, Up 28-6

Collier with triple #6. Woods, Gaines, Takaki, and Rickey also hitting 1 a piece from downtown. We're 10-14 (71%) 3PT.
7:40, Up 40-14

TX.RG beginning to hit some shots, but we were matching them point by point. Our key big men got into foul trouble, forcing me to extend my bench. We added 4 more made 3s to end the half

Halftime, Up 60-34

PG Mark Collier was hot right from the beginning; 22 pts already including 6 triples. TX.RG's SG Stephen Johnson, averaging 20 ppg their past 2 games, only has 2 pts to show so far.

We're 14-24 (58%) 3PT so far. We could had more attempts, if not for the 8 turnovers

Adjustments
- Earlier in the 1st half, I reduced (-1) Full Court press as TX.RG broke our press at least twice
- Off Crash: -1; Def Crash: -1

2nd half

TX.RG shooting better in the 2nd half, but they are not making stops either. PG Mark Collier now with 28 pts (8 triples). We're 19-36 (52%) 3PT.
11:45, Up 77-51

TX.RG not offering any type of resistance on defense the rest of the way. We're getting any shot we want. Our 24th triple of the game put us on the century mark with 5 mins left to play. How many can we still score is the only thing left to know in this game. Bench will get playing time today

Final Score: Texas-Rio Grande - 70, Kennesaw St - 106

Your system certainly is working to put up a lot of 3's...and your guys are doing a good job of hitting them.

Postby RandyR17 » Fri Sep 04, 2020 1:01 am

11/21/2019
vs Florida Atlantic (2-0)

Opponent Notes
- In their 2 games so far, FL.AT went to the FT line a total of 74 times already. Our thin bench may get tested today, if we're not careful with those fouls
- Some people may refer to this game as the 'Owl Bowl'

1st Half

We're 1-5 3PT to start the game. Fortunately for us, C Dupree Eschmeyer has been a terror on the offensive glass; he has 9 pts (6 of which coming from OR putbacks)
15:47 Up 14-6

It's been our big men carrying the load thus far. When Eschmeyer is resting on the bench, backup C Xavier Jefferson came off and has scored 9 pts also, often as the beneficiary of our fast break opportunities. Seldom-used PF Mike Brown also providing quality minutes with 5 pts. We're 2-8 3PT
11:12, Up 30-17

We started hitting a few 3s, a couple of which coming from SG Joel Woods. Woods is having another good overall game, also with 3 rebs, 4 asts, and 2 stls. FL.AT shooting just 38% FG
6:59, Up 43-23

FL.AT started taking advantage of what they do best, which is go the FT line. They're 12-14 FT in the 1st half. Foul trouble made me use my bench a bit more than usual, and they delivered!

Halftime, Up 57-40

I don't mind the 7-22 3PT (32%) shooting performance. 2 things I was happy about after the 1st half
- Balanced scoring. Our bench even slightly outscored our starters, 29 to 28
- Zero turn overs. Good job!

Adjustments
- None needed

2nd half

We're still relatively quiet (as compared to our previous games) from the outside. 8-25 3PT (32%) so far. FL.AT got close to within 12, but we promptly answer back with a 9-2 run
13:40 Up 68-49

More FTs for FL.AT as we got into penalty again. But another one of our bench player, SG Frank Rickey (9 pts), has hit some timely shots to keep Fl.AT at bay. We only have 2 turn overs so far
7:58 Up 80-62

Score was 80-64 with 7:27 left. And then we scored 8 unanswered pts in a span of 43 secs (a 3, a breakaway jam, and then another 3). The FL.AT coach can do nothing else but call a timeout. This game is over
6:44 Up 88-64

Final Score: Florida Atlantic - 89, Kennesaw St - 103

Box Scores

Team Comparison:

Relatively few attempts from 3 today; 12-33 3PT (ok my fault; I forgot to check the Shoot 3s box during the 2nd half)

Game #4

Postby RandyR17 » Fri Sep 04, 2020 5:47 am

11/24/2019
vs Florida A&M (2-2)

Opponent Notes
- FLAM averaging 90 ppg at home, but only 50 ppg (shooting just over 30% FG) on their 2 road defeats

1st Half

FL.AM shooting 36% FG, but they are keeping close. I fee like they were able to control the tempo (slow) of the game, to limit our number of possessions. Starting PF Austin Florence, who has been relatively quiet the past 2 games (3.5 ppg) now has 8 pts, including 2 OR putbacks. We're 5-10 3PT (50%), scored by 5 different players.
10:39 Up 23-15

Pace has gone up. We're missing more shots in the last 10 mins of the 1st half. But our +6 differential in turn overs, and +4 in offensive rebounds means we are getting more shot opportunities. FLAM's outside shooting woes continues, with 0-6 3PT.

Halftime, Up 50-29

SG Joel Woods started heating up; 12 pts, 3 3PT.
FLAM has already committed 12 turn overs
We're 9-25 3PT (36%)

Adjustments
- Off Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(Yes, I remember checking the Shoot 3s box now)

15 of our 1st 19 pts in the 2nd half were from 3PT shots. More turn overs for FL.AM (16 total now), and they still have not shot well (0-8 3PT). Our scoring has been very balanced, with 6 players having scored at least 8 pts. We're 14-38 3PT (37%)
11:55 Up 69-37

FL.AM's offense improved a little, but the closest they got was a 23-pt deficit. With about 4 mins left, we connected on 4 straight 3PT shots to put the game beyond doubt, and the reserves started checking in.

Final Score: Florida A&M - 70, Kennesaw St - 99

Box Scores

Rickey 21, 4, 0, 4 3PT (*)
Woods 15, 4, 5, 4 3PT

Jefferson 8, 2, 1, 2 3PT
Eschmeyer 6, 2, 0
Grandison 3, 0, 2, 1 3PT
Takaki 2, 1, 2
Leath 2, 0, 1
Brinker 0, 0, 0
Walker 0, 0, 0

Team Comparison:
FG%: 45 to 51%
REB: +3 (+9 in the offensive glass)
TO: +11
Paint: -8
2nd Chance: +14 (15 offensive rebs and 18 2nd chance pts; significant part of our game today)
Fast Break: +2

We shot 20-56 3PT (36%). I figure if we can put up between 50 to 60 3PT shots per game, and make around 36% of them, we should be able to score around 90+ pts per game.

Postby RandyR17 » Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:04 am

We start a 6-game road trip

11/28/2019
@Rice (2-2)

Opponent Notes
- RICE on a 2-game win streak, scoring 85 and 81 pts in those wins, with at least 20 asts each

1st Half

Two efficient offensive teams struggling to put up points early. What we can't afford to do is turn the ball over; we have 4 turn overs already. We're 3-8 (38%) 3PT.
14:38, Up 9-7

It's our turn to force turn overs against RICE (6 turn overs). PG Mark Collier with 8 pts, 2 3PT.
11:50, up 18-10

RICE's 2-3 defense giving us the license to shoot from deep. 18 of our 25 FGAs are from beyond the arc. More turn overs (11) from RICE, allowing us to score also on transition. SG Cedric Takaki with 6pts off the bench, including 2 3PT
6:37 Up 35-14

The rest of the half saw RICE hitting 3 triples, but that's about the only highlights they had. We connected on 5 more 3PT shots of our own. Yes they can score against us, but we will score more :-)

Halftime, Up 54-24

C Dupree Eschemeyer nearing a double-double, 8 pts and 10 rebs, plus 3 stls
RICE with 12 turn overs
We're 13-26 3PT (50%)

Adjustments
- Off Reb Crash: +1; Def Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

Shaky start again to start the 2nd half. RICE had a 12-0 run to cut our lead to 18. We had 4 early turn overs and missed our 1st 5 shots from 3. I even called a time out just to settle things down. It took us almost 7 minutes before we finally scored our 1st pts in the 2nd half. We're 13-31 3PT (42%) (Arrrgghhhhh, I forgot to check the Shoot 3s box again at the start of the 2nd half)
13:30, Up 56-36

Our lead was hovering around 17 pts with 6 mins to play. We scored 7 straight pts to go up by 24. That should do it. Good thing we had a big cushion at the end of the 1st half. Otherwise, that long scoring drought at the start of the 2nd half might have cost us this game

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 87, Rice - 65

Box Scores

Collier 20, 3, 5, 6 3PT
Eschmeyer 15, 16, 1, 3 stls, 2 blks (*)
Woods 12, 2, 1, 4 3PT
Florence 10, 1, 0, 1 3PT
Gaines 9, 6, 3, 3 blks, 3 3PT
Takaki 9, 2, 1, 3 3PT
Jefferson 6, 4, 0, 4 blks
Rickey 3, 1, 6, 1 3PT
Grandison 3, 0, 0, 1 3PT
Brinker 0, 1, 0
Brown 0, 0, 0
Leath 0, 0, 0
Walker 0, 0, 0

Team Comparison:
FG%: 45 to 39%
REB: -4
TO: +6
Paint: +8
2nd Chance: -6
Fast Break: Even

We came up with 12 blks
We shot 19-47 3PT (40%), but only 6-21 in the 2nd half. I expect us to hit cold shooting spells during the course of a game, esp on the road. But I always instruct the team to just continue shooting. Eventually those shots will fall, and we will have enough pts scored at the end to hack out a road win

Quite possibly, it's because there aren't too many good defenders at lower level schools. If in case we get to the NCAA tournament and face an elite program with players who can defend, then we may have difficulty in getting good looks at our shots

@Tennessee-Martin (0-4, 0-1 Home)

Opponent Notes
- TEN.M Defensive Rating ranking in the bottom 10% in the nation (#328)

1st Half

We're getting the shots we want but nothing falling in at the start. We're 0-10 FG at one point, before we hit our next 4 shots (2 from 3PT). TN.M not having any luck either on their shots (2-9 FG)
13:59, Up 10-6

Still shooting ice cold. We're 2-12 3PT. As a result, TN.M taking the lead as some of their shots beginning to go in
9:19 Down 16-17

After a slow start, TN.M can't seem to miss now (57% FG). Only SG Joel Woods is hitting the mark today (15 pts, 5 3PT), and C Xavier Jefferson (9 pts); we need others to step up.
5:00 Up 32-30

A strong finish by TN.M. They started the game on 0-7 FG, and then connected on 19 of their next 23 shots. Seems like we're still 'lucky' to be down by just 11 at the half

Halftime, Down 38-49

TN.M's defense also on point during the 1st half, getting 5 stls and 4 blks
We're 6-20 3PT (30%)

Adjustments
- Use man-man exclusively
- Off Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

SG Joel Woods' 6th triple started an 8-2 run which cut our deficit to 5. TN.M able to answer back with a couple of clutch baskets
14:03 Down 48-57

After the media timeout, SG Cedric Takaki and PG Mark Collier each hitting a 3. We scored on a transition basket after a TN.M turn over. In a span of 71 secs, we go on an 8-0 run forcing TN.M to call a timeout. We're back in this game! We're 10-27 3PT (37%)
12:52 Down 56-57

Teams exchanging a triple, several turn overs, and lots of misses. Collier hits another 3 to finally give us the lead. We made a stop. Collier drives to the basket and scores! Another time out by TN.M. Collier with 15 pts, 2 3PT, and very exhausted. We're 12-32 3PT (37%)
8:46 Up 64-60

TN.M makes a basket after their timeout. In their succeeding possessions however, they missed 4 shots and turned the ball over 3x. TN.M's offense has gone cold, and has scored only 5 pts over the last 9 mins.
5:29 Up 69-62

it's our turn to go on a scoring drought. TN.M on a mini 5-0 run. I call a time out
3:53 Up 69-67

We score on a drive. Up 4. Another TN.M turn over. On our next possession, SF Adam Gaines scores a 3! Up 7. TN.M answers back also with a 3. Up 4. Teams trading misses.
1:43 Up 74-70
(I slowed down game speed, as clock management skills going to be tested here)

TN.M has the ball. We get a steal, by C Dupree Eschmeyer. Outlet to PG Mark Collier for the jam! Up 6. Tn.M possession. Collier intercepts the pass! Collier pushing up the ball. Pass to PF Austin Florence for an alley-oop, and Florence throws down a jam!
1:10 Up 78-70

I told the team to slow down and stall. We give up a foul. Smart foul as it is only our 3rd team. 0:55 left. TN.M miss a 3. We get the rebound. TN.M fouls but they are not also in the penalty. All we need to do is waste some clock. A close road victory

12/1/2019
@Nothern Arizona (2-3, 2-1 Home)

Opponent Notes
- In their 2 home wins, N.AZ giving up only 57 ppg to their opponents

1st Half

A hot start for our shooters, forcing N.AZ to an early timeout. We're 4-6 3PT (67%).
16:00 Up 14-2

N.AZ offense is primarily inside, while our players continue to shoot consistently from the outside. We're 7-14 3PT. SF Adam Gaines with 9 pts, and a perfect 3-3 3PT.
9:44 Up 24-15

N.AZ started to hit outside shots as well, while our offense goes to sleep mode. I called a time out.
5:56 Down 24-26

My players responded after the timeout, hitting 4 consecutive baskets (2 3s), and making stops also on the defensive end. We're currently on a 10-2 run. We're 9-20 3PT (45%)
4:06, Up 34-28

N.AZ got to within 2. We finished the half strongly on an 11-2 run during the final 3 mins, adding 3 more triples

Halftime, Up 45-34

Good game so far from SG Cedric Takaki, 13 pts off the bench including 4 3PT
We only grabbed 1 off reb, and zero 2nd chance pts
We're 12-27 3PT (44%)

Adjustments
- Use man-man exclusively, doubling on TN.M's 2 big forwards down low
- Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We started the 2nd half on a 10-2 run. We also grabbed 4 off rebs already, after having only 1 in the 1st. The rebounding adjustment we did was working.
17:09, Up 55-36

Both teams making small runs. We get the lead up to 22, and then N.AZ will cut it to 17. Our double team on N.AZ's SF Adam Kamouna (18 pts, 8 rebs) making him tired.
10:47, Up 67-47

No one seems want to take a shot, when NZ.A's Kamouna went to the bench to rest; their offense stalled. We led by as high as 25 with 7:47 remaining. N.AZ made a furious rally towards the end, cutting our lead to 12. But with less than 2 mins remaining, we slowed down the game. The N.AZ coach even got a technical.

Game #8

Postby RandyR17 » Sat Sep 05, 2020 12:31 am

12/8/2019
@Alabama State (2-2, 2-1 Home)

Opponent Notes
- ALST is #1 in the nation in FG% (52.6%)

1st Half

ALST likes to drive and take high percentage shots, the reason why they are #1 in the nation in FG%. We're +4 in turn overs (zero so far) which explains why we are still in the lead at the halfway mark of the 1st half. We're 4-11 3PT (36%), with SG Cedric Takaki hitting 2 triples.
10:57, Up 25-19

We connected on 4 more 3s, but ALST still keeping the game close. We're 8-17 3PT (47%), while 12-18 2-ptFG% (67%). Very balanced scoring on our side, with 7 players scoring at least 5 pts each
5:51, Up 40-30

ALST's offense has gone cold in the last 2 mins, allowing us to extend our lead. ALST's FG shooting has dipped to 53%, while we finished the 1st half at 55% FG

Halftime, Up 59-40

In this game where both teams can score at a high clip (% wise), it's a matter of who can have more opportunities to shoot. We're at +8 FGA. And of course, a 3PT shot > 2PT shot. We're 11-26 3PT (42%)

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: -1 (ALST with only 1 off reb)
- we'll double on ALST's center down low, who has 9 pts on 4-4 FG

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

ALST begin to take more outside shots and converting quite a number of them. We'll exclusively use man-to-man defense now. Our lead cut down to 15
14:26, Up 67-52

After we hit a 3 to make the score 70-54, ALST went on a 9-2 run. I have seen enough and called a time out
11:01, Up 72-63

During the time out, we designed a play to free up SG Cedric Takaki to take a 3. Takaki delivers and hits his 6th triple of the game! Pace and scoring increased over the next 4 mins, with both teams lighting up the scoreboard. We won't mind exchanging baskets the rest of the way, esp if its 3 for 2. We're 17-43 3PT (39%)
6:59, Up 89-75

We continue our torrid scoring spree. ALST can't keep up and faded towards the end, committing lots of turn overs. Today is the perfect vision I have on how I want this team to play. You can score a ton points against us. We'll score a lot as well, until you feel the pressure on trying to score more

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 107, Alabama St - 87

REB: +2
TO: +10 (ALST with 18)
Paint: -8
2nd Chance: +3
Fast Break: -4

ALST scored 87 pts, and shot 56% FG. Those numbers would result in a win for most teams, esp at home. But not against us
It's the 3rd double double for C Dupree Eschmeyer this season
We shot 21-48 3PT (44%)
