Shoot our way to success

Game #9

12/12/2019
@UC Davis (2-6, 2-0 Home)

Opponent Notes
- CAL.D averaging 16.5 topg

1st Half

We converted on 5 triples already.
15:06, Up 17-8

After hitting their 1st 2 shots earlier in the game, CAL.D has missed 8 of their last 9. We're 6-16 3PT (37%)
11:58, Up 20-10

Our players still not proficient enough on our 1-3-1 defense. CAL.D having an easy time getting the ball to the open space on the low post, allowing them easy baskets. We're 9-25 3PT (36%)
4:32, Up 37-30

Turning out to be another high-scoring game. CAL.D shot 54% FG, but they are still trailing. Let's see who gets tired at the end game, and make mistakes

Halftime, Up 51-48

CAL.D's bench did most of the damage, scoring a combined 26 pts.
We're 12-31 3PT (39%)

Adjustments
- Off Reb Crash: +1
- Exclusive man-to-man defense, and double on everyone

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We even push the pace even further. We go on a 10-2 run in just 2 and half mins of the 2nd half, forcing CAL.D to call an early time out
17:34, Up 61-50

CAL.D is trying to match our pace to keep the game close. Will they have enough gas left on the tank towards the end? We continue to hoist more 3pt shots; we're 17-42 3PT (40%). Our starting guards PG Mark Collier and SG Joel Woods already combining for 37 pts
11:23, up 76-64

CAL.D perhaps starting to show sighs of fatigue as they start to miss a lot of shots, and commit turnovers (15 so far) in their last few possessions. We're not letting our guard down as I told my players to keep on shooting. We're 20-50 3PT (40%). Both teams in penalty
3:39, Up 91-75

CAL.D even missed 4 shots underneath the basket. Still leading comfortably with less than 2 mins left. We'll eat up the clock the rest of the way

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 100, UC Davis - 84

@Canisius (4-3, 3-1 Home)

Opponent Notes
- CANIS a good defending team; opponents average less than 60 ppg on their homecourt. This is a good test for us

1st Half

CANIS not giving us good looks from the outside. We just hit our 1st 3, after missing 6 attempts.
15:34, Tied at 7

Not much activity on the scoreboard for both sides. CANIS is taking control of tempo, which is to slow down. We're 2-13 3PT (15%)
10:41, Up 12-11

Still no luck in our shooting. Some interior points on our side helps us keep the score close. I told my players that they do a good job in following our game plan. keep shooting, and those will go in later on (or so I hope). We're 3-22 3PT (14%)
6:02, Down 17-20

We forced CANIS into some turn overs, helping us manufacture a few pts in transition. We made 3 of our last 5 attempts from 3, so I hope that's a good sign for the 2nd half

Halftime, Up 36-28

As bad as our 35% FG performance in the 1st half, CANIS is slightly worse at 32%
because of the number of missed shots on either side, both teams have 20 def rebs already
SG Cedric Takaki has 8 pts off the bench
We're 6-27 3PT (22%)

Adjustments
- Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

Even though both teams have scored the same number of pts so far in the 2nd half, the tempo of the game has definitely increased, which is what we wanted. We're 8-32 3PT (25%)
14:08, Up 52-44

CANIS offense has stalled, their woes being compounded by 16 turn overs. On our side, our shooters starting to find their stroke. SG Joel Woods approaching a double-double with 14 pts and 9 rebs. We're 10-36 3PT (28%)
9:41, Up 62-46

More misses and turn overs for CANIS. Our shooters continue to bury 3s. We led by 23 with 7 mins left, and it seems like CANIS has already thrown the white flag at that point.

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 84, Canisius - 62

I like the way our players kept their composure and stuck with our game plan, even if things aren't going our way for most of the 1st half.
50 seems to be the threshold for the number of 3PT attempts that we should have per game. If we can be consistent on that, we're giving ourselves a chance to win on every game.

Postby RandyR17 » Sat Sep 05, 2020 4:19 pm

12/19/2019
Seattle (4-5, 0-4 Away)

Opponent Notes
- SEA scoring below 60 ppg in their last 3 road games. It will be a challenge for them to keep up on us

1st Half

SEA with 5 turn overs already, as they seem to be lost on what they want to do on offense. We're 3-5 3PT
15:10, Up 11-2

SEA scoring mostly on transition. We could have had a comfortable lead if we are more careful on the ball.
11:09, Up 23-16

SEA's turnovers have piled up (14 already), and we are happy to take advantage of them for easy baskets. They were forced to call a time out. We're 8-18 3PT (44%)
6:53, Up 39-19

SEA went on a 9-1 run to cut our lead to 12. I wasn't happy and called a time out. Our players responded strongly by scoring 16 pts in the last 3 and a half minutes of the 1st half. SEA has shown ability to hit outside shots, but their opportunities were limited because of turn overs

Halftime, Up 56-36

SEA already with 16 turn overs
SG Frank Rickey with an impressive performance off the bench, 16 pts, 3 3PT
We're 11-25 3PT (44%)

Adjustments
- use man-to-man exclusive
- Def Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

It has become a shootout at the early goings of the 2nd half, which means we still retain our comfortable lead. Far from over though, as SEA is joining us in the 3pt shooting act as well.
15:10, Up 70-51

Suddenly SEA can't miss. They have already surpassed what they normally score on a road game. I burned another time out. Signs of complacency on my players.
11:47, Up 72-62

SG Cedric Takaki responds by making a 3. We get a steal. Takaki hits another 3. A miss by SEA. PG Mark Collier takes a quick 3 and swish! We scored 9 pts in a span of 51 secs! SEA's turn to call a timeout. We're 16-37 3PT (43%)
10:56, Up 81-62

Takaki and Collier each added another 3 on their tally. SG Joel Woods, who is relatively quiet today, buried a 3 of his own. A 3 by PF Austin Florence. Everybody joining in. SEA can't make their shots now. 2 more 3s by Takaki and SG Frank Rickey. Just 5 minutes ago, it was a 10-pt game, with SEA having the momentum. All of a sudden we're leading by a whopping 33 pts. I know there's more than 6 mins left, but I don't see SEA making another run. This is game over

I know we can score a lot, but 115 pts is amazing! That's almost 3 pts per minute of game time
We seem to be performing our best when the opponent is scoring well also. SEA finished with 88 pts and 54% FG (on the road), and they still get blown out
Seldom-used PF Mike Brown made the most of his opportunities during garbage time, finishing in double figures

Postby RandyR17 » Sat Sep 05, 2020 8:08 pm

12/22/2019
@Highpoint (3-6, 2-2 Home)

Opponent Notes
- HIPNT one of the lowest scoring teams in the country at 64.1 ppg (#323). Looks like another team that wants to slow things down

1st Half

Most of HIPNT's pts are inside. We're not quick in our double team down low. HIPNT also with 3 blocks. We're 2-7 3PT (29%)
14:46, Down 10-14

We still can't stop HIPNT's big men from scoring down low. Our offense has been lethargic.
9:13, Down 15-24

SF Adam Gaines and SG Cedric Takaki connecting on back to back 3s, as part of an 8-2 run. I hope that is the spark we need to get back in this game.
7:22, Down 23-26

HIPNT hit 2 consecutive 3s of their own to give them the biggest lead of the game at 9. We rallied again and closed the gap to 1 pt on a couple of occasions. HIPNT getting clutch baskets every time we get close. We tied the game with 2 mins left, and it remained that way at the break. Good game so far considering we shot only 41% FG, compared to HIPNT's 54% FG

Halftime, Tied at 41

Our usually-potent bench only has 8 pts so far
HIPNT shot 5-10 3PT (50%)
We're 8-20 3PT (40%)

Adjustments
- use man-to-man exclusive
- Def Reb Crash: -1; Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We finally took the lead with a SG Joel Woods' 3. SF Adam Gaines also getting a 3, followed by another Woods trifecta. Pace of the game going to our advantage now. HIPNT still getting inside baskets, but they are getting fewer and far in between now. We're at 12-25 3PT (48%)
15:57, Up 57-45

We increased our lead to 15, but HIPNT scoring 6 unanswered pts prior to the media timeout.
11:29, Up 65-56

We go on another mini-run to extend our lead to 17, after another 3 by Woods
8:06, Up 80-63

HIPNT cut our lead to 12 with 5:22 remaining. We promptly countered with SG Frank Rickey's 1st 3 of the game. They score another 2, and we answered with another 3. I can live with that. We're 18-39 3PT (46%)
3:55, Up 88-72

I had to call a time out when HIPNT got close again to 12. But with less than 2 minutes left, I just want to make sure we don't suffer a monumental collapse down the stretch. We slowed down the game, and made our FTs to seal the win

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 90, Highpoint - 76

Could have been much closer result. Easy to overlook, but the turn over differential (we have 12 less turn overs) perhaps the key reason we won.

Postby RandyR17 » Sun Sep 06, 2020 10:56 am

Last game of our non-conference schedule

12/26/2019
@Navy (2-7, 2-3 Home)

Opponent Notes
- Another low scoring team. NAVY ranks #345 in ppg (60.7) and #339 in Off Rating

1st Half

We seem to be getting the habit of starting slowly. Took more than 2 mins before we hit our 1st FG (a 3, what else). We connected on 2 more triple after. NAVY with 3 off rebs already
15:10, Up 12-8

SG Joel Woods with 3 triples already. We're 5-11 3PT (46%). NAVY's big men getting their pts inside, despite our double team
11:34, Up 20-12

Added 3 more 3s, plus a couple of transition baskets from NAVY's turn overs. We're 8-16 3PT (50%)
7:02, Up 33-18

Woods hits another 3 to bring his tally to 15 pts in the 1st half. NAVY's offense is also consistent (47% FG) keeping them close

Halftime, Up 51-36

Navy's center with 14 pts, almost all of it from low post plays
We're 10-24 3PT (42%)

Adjustments
- use man-to-man exclusive; double only the center
- Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

SG Joel Woods scored 2 more 3s; he now has 7 from long range. NAVY's shooting percentage dropping, as they scored just 4 pts so far in the 2nd half. We're 12-28 3PT (43%)
15:28, Up 62-40

It has been a shootout by both teams in the last 4 mins. We're 15-34 3PT (44%).
10:57, Up 75-54

NAVY cut our lead to 14, but that's the closest they've gotten. We hit some timely 3s every time they make a small run. We restored our 20+ lead with 4 mins left, and coasted the rest of way. SG Cedric Takaki also having a good shooting game with 6 3s, only overshadowed by Woods' 8 triples. Our garbage time crew scored enough pts to bring our total to the century mark again

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 100, Navy - 74

46 pts by our bench today. SGs Cedric Takaki and Frank Rickey are starting 5 material, but having them come off the bench gives us the ability to have consistent scoring the entire game. One of them may even be awarded All-Conference team, without starting a single game
We shot 20-46 3PT (43%)
This is the 6th time this season (out of 13 games) that we scored 100 or more pts. We finished our non-conference schedule with a perfect 13-0 record

Game #14 - Start of 2019-20 Confernce play

Postby RandyR17 » Sun Sep 06, 2020 2:29 pm

1/2/2020
Liberty (4-9, 0-0) @ Kennesaw St (13-0, 0-0)

Opponent Notes
- LIBER #1 in conference in points allowed, limiting their opponents to 69.2 ppg

1st Half

Both teams with 3 triple each. If not for LIBER's 3 turnovers, we would be staring at a deficit
14:48, Up 15-3

Most of our pts are from transition, fueled by our 5 stls. Our outside shots still not consistent. We're 3-10 3PT (30%)
10:51, Up 21-15

Only SG Joel Woods is finding his range from the outside, 3-7 3PT; the rest of the team is 1-7 3PT. LIBER already has 11 turn overs.
7:14 Up 26-20

LIBER came to within 1. And then we got some outside shooting help from backup C Xavier Jefferson, with 2 3s. SG Cedric Takaki also hitting his 1st 3 of the game. 9-0 run. LIBER calls a time out
4:03, Up 35-25

We continued the run to 17-0, including back-to-back 3s by SF Adam Gaines, extending our lead to 18. However, LIB finished the 1st half with an 11-2 run of their own to get back within single digits

Halftime, Up 45-36

LIBER with 14 turnovers, negating their good FG shooting (48%)
We're doing a good job passing the ball; 15 asts on 17 made FGs. We just need to knock down more shots
We're 9-27 3PT (33%)

Adjustments
- use man-to-man exclusive
- Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

The LIBER coach must have sensed something wrong with his team, as he called a timeout just 40 secs into the 2nd half. We made 2 quick baskets already.
19:20, Up 50-36

LIBER must have done some defensive adjustments during their timeout as our offense got a bit cold the last 4 mins.
14:59, Up 54-44

We added a couple of 3s, but other than that, our scoring production is slightly slower today, allowing LIBER to stay within striking distance. We're 12-36 3PT (33%)
11:44, up 60-48

LIBER got to within 8. I elected not to call a time out as I wanted the players to learn how to figure out themselves and turn things around. Good decision as SF Adam Gaines gets a 3 to start. LIBER answered with a 3 also. On our next pay, SG Cedric Takaki's turn to hit a 3. After a LIBER miss, SG Joel Woods gets his 3 to go in. We have converted our last 3 attempts from downtown.
7:48, Up 71-57

2 FTs by Gaines extended our current run to 8-0. LIBER trying to make a rally again, but every time they get close to breaking the double digit barrier, we respond with a time 3pt basket. We're 17-46 3PT (37%)
4:09, Up 81-63

LIBER never threatened again, and we coasted to our 1st win of conference play.

Game #15

Postby RandyR17 » Sun Sep 06, 2020 6:00 pm

1/5/2020
Kennesaw St (14-0, 1-0) @ North Florida (4-10, 1-0)

Opponent Notes
- N.FL won on the road in their last game, limiting Lipscomb to just 59 pts and 25% 3PT. Let's see how they defend our shooters

1st Half

We were up to the challenge, and getting success on our 3PT shooting. We're 4-6 3PT (67%). N.FL trying to match our pace, but with limited success as they have committed 4 turn overs already. N.FL forced to call an early time out.
16:01, Up 16-4

N.FL slowing down the pace now, but it did nothing to improve their offense as they are shooting just 27% FG. We're 7-13 3PT (54%). SG Cedric Takaki leads our balanced attach with 9 pts off the bench.
9:22, Up 31-13

We have also complemented our outside game with some drives to the basket to increase our lead. N.FL shooting just 1-9 3PT (11%)
5:09 Up 40-17

A flurry of baskets at both ends of the floor, but it did nothing to reduce our lead. Our big men were active on offense today. PF Austin Florence (14 pts) showing his versatility hitting 3 3PT shots, and couple from the low post.

Halftime, Up 58-34

We're doing a good job also on defense, having 6 blks and limiting N.FL to 33% FG
We're 13-25 3PT (52%)

Adjustments
- use man-to-man exclusive
- Off Reb Crash: +1
- Def Intensity: -1 (we went into penalty early in the 1st half)

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

Our shooting dipped a little bit, but I like the effort shown on defense. We have 11 blks already. We're 16-34 3PT (47%)
13:40, Up 69-47

We converted on 7 of our next 11 attempts from deep, negating whatever improvements in offense N.FL made in the 2nd half. We're 23-45 3PT (51%). It looks like we're going to score over 100 pts again
6:04, Up 92-69

Our reserves had difficulty making shots in the end, but eventually a 3PT shot by PF Mike Brown puts us above the century mark. Plenty of pts scored during the last 10 mins of the game, including on the side of N.FL

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 101, North Florida - 83

More than our offense today (which was on fire), I am very satisfied with our 'hustle' stats of 15 blks and 10 off rebs
PG Mark Collier had a career high 13 asts. This is also his 1st double double this season
We shot 24-51 3PT (47%)

Game #16

Postby RandyR17 » Tue Sep 08, 2020 9:48 pm

1/9/2020
Lipscomb (5-9, 0-1) @ Kennesaw St (15-0, 2-0)

Opponent Notes
- LIPSCB last in conference in FG% (40.6%). They shot just 30% FG in their 1st conference game

1st Half

It seems we're the one, and not LIPSCB, who is last in the conference in FG%. We're shooting just 10% FG (1-10). We have not made a 3 in 5 attempts.
15:40, Down 6-8

PF Austin Florence (10 pts, 2 3PT) providing some spark in our otherwise anemic offense.
11:50, Up 18-14

We're 3-12 3PT (25%). The good thing for us is that LIPSCB is 0-4 3PT.
6:59, Up 27-22

Game was tied at 27. But we finished the half on a 15-3 run, including a buzzer beater 3pt shot by seldom-used PF Bradley Brinker. Our 13-15 performance from the FT line, plus 6 2nd chance pts, constituted a significant part of our offensive production in the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 42-30

LIPSCB with 11 turn overs already
We're 5-19 3PT (26%). I'm not so much concerned on the shooting %, but more on not having enough attempts

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We made 5 3s already in the 1st 5 mins of the 2nd half, equaling our total in the entire 1st half. We're now 10-27 3PT (37%). LIPSCB continue to turn the ball over, now at 15
14:33, Up 59-41

LIPSCB's turn over problem continues (19). SG Franck Rickey added a couple more 3s, and we're pulling away now
9:43, Up 67-43

Lead was up to 29 with less than 6 mins left. LIPSCB don't have the offensive weapons to stage a comeback, esp with their 17% 3PT performance. This is over

Final Score: Lipscomb - 58, Kennesaw St - 80

Good to know we can pull off a win on a bad shooting day. Defense and rebounding won this game for us
C Dupree Eschmeyer with a season-high 16 rebs
We shot 15-46 3PT (33%)

Game #17

Postby RandyR17 » Wed Sep 09, 2020 3:00 am

1/16/2020
Kennesaw St (16-0, 3-0) @ Jacksonville (6-11, 2-2)

Opponent Notes
- JAXVL shooting 50% FG on their 2 home conference game, both wins

1st Half

Slow start. Both teams with 3 turn overs each. We're 1-6 3PT (17%)
15:58, Down 5-7

Our 5 turn overs compounding our shooting slump. We're 3-13 3PT (23%). Our defense is keeping us from being down big
11:07, Down 13-14

Only SG Cedric Takaki (11 pts, 4-8 FG)is having a decent offensive day; the rest of our team is 2-11 FG. We're also in the penalty
7:59, Tied at 19

Our next 3 FGs happened in transition off turn overs by JAXKVL. We continue to struggle from the outside, 5-21 3PT (24%). Takaki with 15 pts
3:45, Tied at 25

We just wanted to stay close for the remainder of the 1st half, and we did that. Hoping that our shots would start to fall in the 2nd half

Halftime, Down 29-32

What I am concerned about is we are being beaten on the boards. JAXKVL already with 8 off rebounds
We're 5-26 3PT (19%).

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: +1 (already max)

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

PG Mark Collier able to connect twice from downtown, but JAXKVL scored enough to keep them in the lead. We're 7-31 3PT (23%)
15:14, Down 38-41

Every time we get close to 1 one possession game, JAXKVL coming up with clutch outside shots. We're 9-25 3PT (26%)
11:48, Down 46-50

My players a little bit frustrated at the huddle during the media time out. We missed at least 13 in a row from beyond the arc. I told them there is plenty of time left. We're 9-38 3PT (24%). One particular player who is struggling is SG Joel Woods (2 pts, 0-6 FG). I praised and encouraged him to keep shooting, and he 'responded'
7:34, Down 50-58

JAXKVL increased their lead to 10. And then we scored 8 straight pts, including a couple of 3s. We're 11-41 3PT (27%). One thing going against us is that we're in penalty. But we're back in this game
3:49, Down 58-60

After JAXKVL made 2 FTs, SG Cedric Takaki drains a 3. Down by just 1. A turn over by JACVL (their 16th). Chance for us to retake the lead. C Dupree Eschmeyer got fouled on the act of shooting. Eschmeyer splits his charities. We get the offensive reb, but we turned the ball over
2:44, Tied at 62

JAXKVL miss. We get the def reb. I called a timeout. We called a play to free up Takaki. Woods with a nice pass to a wide open Takaki. But Takaki missed. Reb by JAXKVL. Still tied at 62, just over 2 mins remaining. Takaki with the interception! 1:56 left. I elected not to call a timeout. Takaki with another miss from deep. JAXKVL gets the reb. Woods gets a block and recovers the ball. Foul on JACKVL, but they are not yet in the penalty. This time I call a timeout
1:27, Tied at 62

We called for a pick and roll play. PG Franck Rickey passes the ball to Woods. Woods is 0-6 from the field so far. Woods fires a shot. Miss again. Reb by JAXKVL. We got called for a foul. 2 FTs for JAXKVL. They hit both shots. Earlier, JACKVL was just 3-10 from the foul line. After that, they have made their last 4 FTs. Down 2, 1:04 left.

I just inserted back PG Mark Collier (who is very tired) earlier in lieu of Rickey. Collier brings up the ball in our front court. Without any hesitation, Collier fires up a 3 and scores! That is Collier's 5th triple of the game, 4 of which he made here in the 2nd half. Timeout JAXKVL
0:54, Up 65-64

JAXVL on their possession. Woods gets a steal! Woods with a couple of defensive stops in the last 2 mins. We bring the ball frontcourt. Timeout
0:35, Up 65-64, 24 secs on the shot clock

But Collier, who earlier hit the go ahead basket, throws a bad pass. Timeout JAXVL. Shot clock is turned off. It looks like JAXVL is taking the last shot. They pass the ball around. With about 6 secs left, JAXVL's point guard drives, and Collier was called for a foul. 2 pressure FTs for JAXVL. 4 secs left. We have no timeout remaining

1st FT is good. Tied at 65
2nd FT is good. Down 1

Collier tried a desperation from 35 ft. Way off. Winning streak over
