Game #18

Postby RandyR17 » Wed Sep 09, 2020 5:52 pm

1/19/2020
North Alabama (10-8, 3-2) @ Kennesaw St (16-1, 3-1)

Opponent Notes
- N.AL 2nd in the conference in scoring at 76.2 ppg; we're #1 at 92.7 ppg
- N.AL's SG Bryan Thomas is the conference's leading scorer at 15.6 ppg; our very own PG Mark Collier is a close #2 at 15.3 ppg

1st Half

The 2 highest scoring teams in the conference both on a slow start, combining for 0-7 3PT (we're at 0-4 3PT).
15:49, Tied at 6

We are capitalizing on every N.AL's turn overs (6), turning them to easy transition baskets, and keep our score board running. N.AL calls a timeout
13:00, Up 17-11

Our shots beginning to fall. After N.AL tied the game at 17, we go on a 19-6 run to take a double digit lead. We're 6-17 3PT (35%)
5:57, Up 36-23

We connected on a few more 3s to extend our lead. After an 8-15 FG start by N.AL, they missed 14 of their next 17 shots. SG Cedric Takaki leads all scorers with 13 pts off the bench including 3-3 from 3PT

Halftime, Up 49-30

N.AL's SG Bryan Thomas, the conference's leading scorer (15.6 ppg), has been held to 1 pt, missing all of 6 shots from the field
We're 9-28 3PT (32%).

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: -1; Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We have 11 steals already, which helps us quicken the tempo of the game, and get us easy baskets on the break. Another early timeout by N.AL
17:20, Up 57-35

Percentage-wise we're not shooting as well as we should, but we're getting extra possessions because of our steals and off rebs. We're 12-42 3PT (29%)
11:21, Up 68-46

5 triples in the next 3 mins was enough to give us a 29 pt lead. We're 17-48 3PT (35%). I don't see N.AL coming back on this game.
8:19, Up 83-54

Experimented on a few combinations, before I let the bench finish the game. I am happy to see that our defense never let off despite the big lead; N.AL scored only 7 pts in the last 8+ mins of the game

Final Score: North Alabama - 61, Kennesaw St - 96

We shot 18-55 3PT (33%)

Game #19

Postby RandyR17 » Thu Sep 10, 2020 2:58 am

1/23/2020
Kennesaw St (17-1, 4-1) @ NJIT (5-13, 2-3)

Opponent Notes
- NJIT averaging 90 ppg on their 2 wins at home in conference play
- NJIT's C Scott Gilmore leads the conference in PER at 17.3, and the frontrunner for Conference POY. The next 3 players I the race are from our team - Eschmeyer, Collier, and Woods

1st Half

Good shooting start for us so far. We're 4-7 3PT (57%)
15:34, Up 13-11

A high scoring game so far. NJIT doing damage mostly on the inside, while we continue to wax hot from the outside. We're 11-21 3PT (52%)
7:30, Up 40-32

Scoring cooled off a bit for the remainder of the half. But the pace so far to our liking (and advantage)

Halftime, Up 53-46

NJIT scored 20 pts inside the paint
We're 13-30 3PT (43%).

Adjustments
- Exclusive man-to-man defense, doubling on their 4 and 5
- Off Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

NJIT still pummeling us on the inside, but I begin to notice that we are at least challenging their shots. We're 15-41 3PT (37%)
14:05, Up 63-56

NJIT making adjustments on their offense, and they hit 3 straight triples to tie the game, before we converted a 3 of our own to stop their run
11:51, Up 68-65

We made defensive adjustment by harassing their perimeter players. When they force the pass inside to their bigs, it resulted in a lot of turnovers that we capitalized. Ever since the score was tied at 65, we outscored NJIT 23-6 since then. We're 20-51 3PT (39%)
6:02, Up 88-71

NJIT making a bit of a run. After another made FG by NJIT, I called a time out just to be sure
1:36, Up 92-82

It's a 4 possession game. We slowed down the game and NJIT did not resist anymore

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 94, NJIT - 84

Game #20

Postby RandyR17 » Fri Sep 11, 2020 6:35 am

1/26/2020
Stetson (6-13, 4-2) @ Kennesaw St (18-1, 5-1)

Opponent Notes
- STETS on a 3-game win streak. They play the 2nd slowest tempo in theconference

1st Half

We're off to a slow start, missing 8 of our 1st 9 shots
15:45, Down 4-7

Still not shooting well. Our offensive rebounding is keeping us in the game. We're 1-8 3PT (12%)
10:32, Down 11-12

We're finally hitting our shots; we converted 4 of our last 5 attempts from deep. Both teams with 7 turn overs each
6:55, Up 25-19

Tempo getting a little bit faster towards the end of the 1st half, giving our perimeter players more opportunities to shoot. We finished the 1st half on a 13-0 run, before STETS hit a couple of 3s late in the half. SG Joel Woods leads all scorers with 14 pts (4 3PT)

Halftime, Up 47-33

STETS with 11 turn overs; we have 8
We're +14 on bench scoring
We're 11-24 3PT (46%)

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: -1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

Pace and scoring continue to pick up at the start of 2nd half. We'd like to keep it that way. We're 15-31 3PT (48%)
14:29, Up 64-49

We're contented on exchanging baskets. As long as we take care of the ball (only 1 turn over in the 2nd half so far), we should be able to hold on for a win. We're 17-39 3PT (44%)
9:48, Up 75-59

We extended the lead to 20. STETS on a 6-0 run to cut our lead to 14. I called time out to break their momentum, and make some defensive adjustments. We're 18-45 3PT (40%)
4:40, Up 81-67

No signs of a rally for STETS. We slowed down the game in the last 2 mins.

Game #21

Postby RandyR17 » Fri Sep 11, 2020 8:42 pm

1/30/2020
Kennesaw St (19-1, 6-1) @ Florida Gulf Coast (4-16, 3-4)

Opponent Notes
- FGCU is near at the bottom of the country in terms of Defensive Rating, at Rank #348. They have given up 80 pts or more, in 5 of their 7 conference games

1st Half

My primary instruction to the team is to shoot as quickly as possible, to constantly pressure FGCU's defense. And that's exactly what we did, putting up 10 FG attempts already, in just over 5 mins. We're 4-9 3PT (44%)
15:45, Up 14-9

We continue to fire at will. Although we would be in a better situation if we're making a good percentage on those shots. But we'll worry about that later. We're 6-16 3PT (37%)
11:17, Up 20-14

We are firing shots at a rate of 2 per minute. I'm not worried if we're missing a great majority of them. Those shots will fall eventually in the 2nd half

Halftime, Up 42-38

One positive working for us is that we only had 3 turn overs in the entire 1st half. Hence, more opportunities to shoot.
We also had 8 off rebs, leading to 8 2nd chance pts
We're 9-29 3PT (31%)

Adjustments
- Def Intensity: -1 (we got into penalty in the 1st half)

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

FGCU scored the 1st 9 pts of the 2nd half, and they took a 5 pt lead. We came back. I am beginning to wonder if my strategy is correct. FGCU clearly shooting better than us, negating our advantage in more attempts. We're 11-36 3PT (31%)
13:54, Up 59-56

FGCU's shooting to go sour now, but this is still a close game. We're still racking up fouls, and already in the penalty with an eternity of basketball ahead. This could go down the wire
9:58, Up 68-63

FGCU +6 in FTMs, and that's significant in a game this close. FGCU also in the penalty now. Our 3pt shooting % continues to plummet; we're 13-44 3PT (29%)
7:35, Up 73-71

We hit a 3, they hit a 2 or convert 2 FTs. Process repeated several times; net positive effect for us. We're 16-50 3PT (32%)
2:51, Up 88-80

FGCU turned the ball over twice on their next 2 possessions, and then we came up with a blk on their next. Although we got just 1 FG out of those 3 consecutive defensive stops we had, time is our side
1:42, Up 90-80

After an FGCU miss, I gave instructions to slow down. We hit a few FTs to seal the win. A poor shooting night, but we still able to put up almost 100 pts on the road

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 94, FGCU - 85

Tis is C Dupree Eschmeyer's 4th double-double of the season. He was key today; if not for his work on the offensive glass, we wouldn't have those 2nd chance opportunities
We shot 16-52 3PT (31%)

Game #22

Postby RandyR17 » Sat Sep 12, 2020 9:32 am

2/2/2020
Kennesaw St (20-1, 7-1) @ Liberty (6-15, 2-6)

Opponent Notes
- LIBER's best player, PF Brian McClinton, is injured with a strained hamstring. He will still play though
- We beat them in the previous meeting, 90-76. In that game, LIBER had 20 turn overs

1st Half

We have yet to score on a half court play. LIBER has dragged the pace of this game into a standstill, and our players are clearly not in rhythm. We're 0-5 3PT
13:52, Down 2-6

No improvements on our part. Our FG% has dropped to 12%. But as bad as our offense is going, we're down by just a single possession. We're 1-10 3PT (10%)
10:00, Down 9-11

We hit a couple of 3s. But our penalty situation allowed LIBER to capitalize on the FT line. I got warned already by the refs for complaining. We're 3-16 3PT (19%)
7:14, Down 17-23

Our made baskets continue to be few and far in between. Eventually, LIBER's 50% FG shooting in the 1st half starting to create some separation. This is the worst 1st half performance we had in this season.

Halftime, Down 30-42

We had 6 off rebs, but zero 2nd chance pts
We're 6-25 3PT (24%)

Adjustments
- Exclusive man-to-man defense, and double everyone hoping to create more turn overs and generate offense in transition

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

If we want to come back, we have to do it with our defense. And that's what we have done so far; LIBER is 0-6 FG. We're 7-30 3PT (23%). LIBER calling a timeout
16:10, Down 37-42

A single-digit lead seems like a mountain to climb considering how anemic our shooting is today. But as long as we keep ourselves within striking distance, we have plenty of time to turn things around. We're 10-35 3PT (29%)
9:51, Down 47-53

LIBER extended their lead to 9 prior to the media timeout. I told the team to be patient, and take it one play at a time. We have scored 7 unanswered pts to get us close again.
6:57, Down 54-56

LIBER scored 2 straight FGs to break our run. Deficit back up again to 6. We scored a 3. LIBER turned the ball over. We made another shot. Just a 1pt game now
5:14, Down 59-60

We steal the ball, and scored on the break. We're up by 1 now! Another steal, and another score on the break! LIBER has seen enough and called a timeout. Momentum clearly on our side. It's currently a 9-0 run
4:33, Up 63-60

A shot clock violation for LIBER. We score again. Up 5. LIBER miss. We score yet again. Up 7. 13-0 run. A missed 3 by LIBER. On or next possession, SG Joel Woods sinks a 3! Up 10. 16-0 run. Tables have turned around quickly
2:45, Up 70-60

LIBER made a couple of FGs, which we quickly countered each time they made a shot. That was about the offensive highlight they had in the last 10 minutes of the game. We slowed down the game in the waning mins, and hold on for a gutsy road win

Final Score: Kennesaw St - 80, Liberty- 64

Game #23

Postby RandyR17 » Mon Sep 14, 2020 6:57 am

We got some recognition … we're rank #22

2/6/2020
North Florida (8-14, 5-4) @ #22 Kennesaw St (21-1, 8-1)

Opponent Notes
- N.FL on a 3-game win streak.. We beat them in our previous meeting, 101-83

1st Half

See-saw battle as N.FL able too keep pace with our offense, with both teams shooting more than 50% FG
15:10, Up 13-12

We're getting good looks from the outside against N.FL's 2-3 zone. We're 4-9 3PT
11:42, Up 19-13

We're getting some production also inside the paint, to complement our outside game. We're 6-14 3PT (43%)
6:51, Up 36-25

I'm very satisfied with our defense late in the 1st half. We picked up 8 stls and 4 blks in the 1st half. The only drawback is the numer of fouls we gave. I even received a technical foul for complaining to the refs

Halftime, Up 60-41

Considering the break-neck pace of the game so far, we only committed 4 turn overs.
Our bench slightly outscored our starters, 31-29, led by SG Franck Rickey's 12 pts
We're 12-22 3PT (54%)

Adjustments
- Exclusive man-to-man defense

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We continue to shoot well in our run-and-gun offense. We're shooting 56% FG, including 15-30 3PT (50%)
14:46, Up 73-48

N.FL's offense wasn't bad, having 60 pts already midway in the 2nd half, and shooting 50% FG. But they just can't answer every basket we make. We're shooting 58% FG, including 19-36 3PT (53%)
9:47, Up 91-60

The only thing unsettled is if we are going to break our season-high of 115 pts. We came up a bit short; perhaps if I didn't elect to have our seldom-used reserves play the last 4 mins of the game, but that's fine. We also got the chance to practice our press defense, which still needs a lot of work

2/9/2020
#22 Kennesaw St (22-1, 9-1) @ Lipscomb (9-13, 4-5)

Opponent Notes
- LIPS has the 2nd lowest FG% (42%) in the conference. They shot only 18% 3PT in our previous game, which we won handily 80-58

1st Half

LIPS already with 5 turn overs. We're not shooting that well, but we have capitalized on some of those turn overs by LIPS. We're 2-7 3PT (29%). LIPS calling an early timeout
16:00, Up 12-1

LIPS getting their groove back on offense. We're hitting enough outside shots to keep us in the lead. We're 5-16 3PT (31%)
10:18, Up 23-16

Both teams hounded by turn overs for the remainder of the 1st half. However, LIPS has significantly improved their shooting (54% FG), allowing them to slowly climb back and eventually tie the game.

Halftime, Tied at 41

Our shots have been blocked 7x already, pulling down our FG% to an abysmal 36%
We were outscored inside the paint, 18-8
We're 8-25 3PT (32%)

Adjustments
- Off Reb Crash: +1

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

SG Joel Woods hitting 3 triples to start the 2nd half. We're also tightening up on defense; LIPS is just 1-6 FG in the 2nd half so far, after shooting 54% in the 1st half. We're 11-31 3PT (36%)
15:53, Up 54-44

LIPS offensive struggles in the 2nd half continues. We added a couple more 3s and transition baskets, to create some distance now. We're 13-35 3PT (37%)
11:22, Up 66-48

LIPS getting some production from the foul line because of our penalty situation. But we still maintain a safe lead, and control of the game. We're 15-39 3PT (38%)
7:57, Up 74-56

We extended the lead to 21 with 4 mins remaining. No sights of a rally from LIPS, and we held on for a good road win. Excellent defensive effort in the 2nd half, where we outscored LIPS 48-27

Our offense slowed down, allowing NAL to get back into the game. We are also in the penalty. I called a timeout to settle the boys

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

After having only 3 TOs in te entire 1st half, we already have 4 TOs in the 1st 7 mins of the 2nd half. NAL easily getting baskets on their drives to the basket
12:59, Up 56-51

NAL moving the ball well, finding the open man (15 asts), and keeping their FG% to almost 50%. We added 2 more TOs (6 already in the 2nd half). We started double team on NAL's SG Bryan Thomas (18 pts). We're 15-45 3PT (33%)
9:03, Up 64-62

We're doing a decent job on the offensive glass, giving us extra chance to shoot. PG Mark Colliers' last 3 giving us some cushion but this far from over. We're 18-52 3PT (34%)
4:40, Up 75-67

Both teams haven't made a FG for quite a while
2:16, Up 76-69

Another miss by NAL. SG Joel Woods got to the line on the other end, making both FTs. A split by NAL

Postby RandyR17 » Sun Dec 26, 2021 10:44 am

2/23/2020
NJIT (8-18, 5-8) @ #20 Kennesaw St (25-1, 12-1)

Opponent Notes
- High scoring affair during our 1st meeting with NJIT, which we won 94-84

1st Half

NJIT has 5 TOs in 5 mins, and we have taken advantage of those extra opportunities in offense. We're 3-6 3PT (50%)
14:44, Up 17-7

NJIT continues to throw the ball away (8 TOs). SG Cedric Takaki leads our balanced attack, 12 pts, 4-8 3PT. NJIT forced to call a timeout as we threaten to blow this game away early. We're 9-14 3PT (64%)
10;12, Up 37-18

NJIT not able to keep up with the pace we dictated in the 1st half. Our outside shots were on target today so far

Halftime, Up 64-35

NJIT's inside scoring has bumped their FG% to 56%, but we made 11 more 3s than them, which created a big disparity in the score
NJIT with 13 TOs
We're 14-27 3PT (52%)

Adjustments
- Def Reb Crash: -1
- use m2m defense exclusively; double team their big men

2nd half

(reminder: check Shoot 3s box)

We continue to hit our outside shots, to quelch any planned rally by NJIT. Another good thing we are doing today is cleaning the defensive glass; NJIT with only 2 off rebs so far
11:21, Up 86-51

Only 16 pts scored by us in the last 12 mins of the game, as we slowed down our offense the rest of the game.
