An Orange Clockwork

1/31: 61-80 at Buffalo. We kind of thought this would be a tough one. They're a very good team. They led by as many as 31. 20, 4 for Jack but no one else did much. Our guards were invisible.

2/3: 77-76 at Northern Illinois. Great road win! Close all the way with 16 lead changes, 10 ties. Never more than an 8 point difference. At the end PG El Maxx hit a three to give us a 1 point lead. They hit a three to take a 2 point lead. Maxx came down and hit another three. They missed one at the buzzer. No idea why they didn't try for a two at that point but I'm good with it! 18, 0, 5 for Maxx, 16, 6, 4 for Jack, 13, 4, 4 for Saul, 12, 7 for Chap.

14-8, 7-3. 3 up in the West Div.

2/7: 88-67 over Ball ST here. Only up by 6 at the half but we rocked the 2nd, 51-36. 19, 2, 3 for Jack, 17, 5, 3 for Saul, 13, 10, 7 for Herr, 14, 2, 4 for Maxx, and another solid game for 6th man Clif Chap, 10 and 5. +14 RBs.

2/10: 91-77 over a very good Akron team here. Up 11 at the half and we never looked back. 23, 7, 3 for Herr, 20, 4, 7 for Maxx, 20, 8 for Jack. +11 RBs.

Don Jack: My goal when I came to UCM was to play in the NCAA tournament. Never thought I'd do it but now that I'm a senior I think we've got a shot. That would be a huge thrill. Being the only senior on the team I'm taking a lot of responsibility for how we do.

16-8, 9-3, still up 3 in the West Div.

2/14: 60-79 at Miami (Ohio). We were never ion this one. I guess you can't play well every night and we sure didn't play well tonight. We shot 32.9%, -4 RBs. 18, 4, 4 for Jack, but no one else did much.

2/17: 65-53 over Toledo here. Down 1 at the half but we dominated the 2nd. 20, 11, 4 for Saul, 14, 0,. 6 for Maxx. +9 RBs.

3 up with 4 to play in the West Div.

Back up SF/SG Jam Wats hurt his back. Looks like he's out for about 2 weeks.

2/21: 75-80 to Northern Illinois at our place. There's nothing worse than a home loss. We blew a 13 point lead. During the last 10 minutes we were awful- couldn't make a shot, couldn't grab a rebound, 7 TOs (19 for the game). 19, 4, 6 for Herr, 15, 4, for Jack, but we were outplayed and out hustled.

We're still 3 games ahead in the West Div. With 3 to play.

2/24: 88-89 at Eastern Michigan. A REALLY tough loss. It was close all the way and there were four lead changes in the last minute. They hit an off balance 15 footer at the buzzer for the win. We defended the shot really well but it went in anyway. The officials didn't help. We went to the line 11 times, they went 21. 35, 5 for Jack who did all that he could. 15, 6, 3 for Herr.

We're 2 up with 2 to play.

2/28: 85-95 to Western Michigan here. No idea what's going on. 3 losses in a row, 2 of them at home. Not good! 24 lead changes and 5 ties but they went on a10-0 run with about 2 minutes left and that was that.

We need a road win in the season finale to clinch the division. We're playing the last place team but the way we're playing right now, who knows what will happen.

3/3: 79-73 at Ball ST and we clinch the West Division of the Mid-American. We led all the way but never by more than 13. 21, 9, 3 for Jack, 17, 14 for Saul. +21 RBs but 22 TOs.

We end the regular season at 18-12, 11-7, 2 up in the West. RPI #94. The team to beat in the tourney is Buffalo, 25-7, 15-3, ranked #21.

We wind up +3.0 PPG, +6.2 RBs, -0.6 TOs but an awful 14.6. Jack leads us with 18.5 PPG. Saul gets 8.8 RBs. Maxx gets 7.8 assists but he turns it over 4.5 times.

3/7: We play 17-13, 11-7 Miami (OH) in the quarter finals. We won by 1 at our place but lost by 19 there.

Scouting Coach Russ Ames: They have a definite edge with their bench, which is long and good. Don Jack and Jay Saul need to step up if we hope to win, and we need to limit their outside shots.

3/8: 101-99 in OT. HELL of a game. They led throughout regulation until we tied it at the buzzer on El Maxx's 25 foot three. Then in OT we jumped out to a 6 point lead and they came back to tie it three times. We had the final possession with 4.2 to go. Maxx got it to Don Jack who worked behind a double pick and hit a 16 footer for the win. He led us with 26, 7, 5. 18, 2, 8 for Maxx, 19, 6 for Saul, 11, 7, 3 for Herr, and 9, 11 for Hill. 6th man Clif Chap came up big with 13, 8, 4. Great win!

It's 21-10, 11-7 Akron in the semifinals. They won in OT at their place and we then beat them by 14 at ours.

Russ Ames: Once again, this team has a deep and talented bench. We need to counter that, and probably with more than just Clif Chap, and we need to play solid D. Nate Hill has not been a big contributor for us this season but his man is a poor defender and i recommended to Coach Winter that we go to Nate whenever we can. We're 1 1/2 point underdogs.

3/9: 91-113. This was an absolute shootout and they had more ammunition. Neither side played much D. You can't win when you let the other guys shoot 64.5%.
The strategy of going to Nate Hill worked to an extent as he had 20, 8, and 3. All the other starters plus Chap had between 11 and 14.

Don Jack stretched a calf muscle and it definitely slowed him down for most of the 2nd half.

Don Jack: Worst time ever to get an injury. We probably would have lost anyway but still. My dream of playing in the NCAA tournament died tonight and I'm really disappointed but I plan to go out in a blaze of glory in whichever tourney we go to.

3/12: WOL tourney, #1 West. We'd love to win this thing. We play #8 seed Stetson, 17-13, first.

Scout Russ Ames: Good guard play and a solid bench. We need to contain the three, and move without the ball to beat their man to man.

3/14: 86-61. 52-40 at the half. 23, 8 for Jack, 16, 3 for Chap. +9 RBs.

The win gives us a 20 win season which is great for our first year!

#5 seed Canisius, 17-14, next.

Russ Ames: Another team with good guards and a strong bench so again, we need to stop the outside shot. On O they also play a man to man so we need to get guys open.

3/16: 89-74. Up 13 at the half. 22, 11 for Saul, 17, 9 for Jack, 14, 6, 3 for Herr. +13 RBs.

We're playing well so far in this tournament. Next up is #6 seed Kansas City in the quarter finals. They're 20-13. A few days off first though, which is great at this point in the season.

Russ Ames: A very good SG and again, a good bench. And another team that plays mostly man to man. We feel like if we play our game we should be okay.

3/21: 79-90. Damn! Their bench beat us, 31, 9, 8 to 13, 6, 2. 21, 6 for Saul, 17, 5, 6 for Herr, 9, 4, 11 for Maxx. Sadly, Jack didn;t have a great night in his last game. Too bad.

Still, a great first season all in all.

3/26: We get 2 recruits! PG #92, C #167. Huge boost for our program!

4/3: #16 Maryland is the national champ.

4/4: Awards: Don Jack and Jay Saul made the Mid-American first team.

4/9: I don't plan to go anywhere.

I actually received some pretty interesting phone calls from pretty decent schools, but I'm staying here. I like it here and I want to build something special. I don't think I'll retire from UCM but I'm here for awhile.

4/23: We ask for a facilities upgrade.

Yes, C+ to B!

Great first season. 21-14, 11-7, first in the Western Div. Of the Mid-American, everyone back except Don Jack, and 4 really good looking recruits coming in.
