Grant-Foster Hurt in First Start, Jones Replaces Him for 'Toughest Stretch'
Head Coach Kenny Payne recently commented on his team's recent 5 game losing streak that includes two losses to open conference play. "I'm proud of how we're playing, but we're not there yet. This is a team that's still learning how to win."

While they continue their early season growing pains, DePaul is also dealing with injuries to multiple players. Javon Freeman-Liberty, who was the team's Captain and leading scorer, is out at least another month as he rehabs a major elbow injury.

In his place, Markese Jacobs stepped into the starting lineup and true freshman Ahamad Bynum saw an increase in minutes. A wrist injury kept Bynum's minutes in check, but he recently took to his Instagram to report that he's "100% back."

While the guards have stepped up in Freeman-Liberty's stead, the coaches also decided to make another change to the starting lineup. The coaching staff was upfront about looking for more offense; they replaced sophomore David Jones with Kansas transfer Tyon Grant-Foster.

Getting his first career start against Xavier, Grant-Foster unfortunately jammed his index finger on his shooting hand early in the second half. It's expected that DePaul will return back to David Jones as they prepare for their most difficult stretch of the conference schedule.

Upcoming games against Villanova, Georgetown, UConn and Creighton will test DePaul just as they try to bounce back from the current losing streak. Beyond that, trying to stay healthy while the coaching staff continues to evaluate the roster.

Loss to Friars Highlights DePaul's Weaknesses
On January 20th, DePaul celebrated a big win over Seton Hall. Guard Jalen Terry had a career night: dropping 40 points leading the Blue Demons to a 21 point route of the Pirates. The 93-72 win was their largest margin of victory in the Big East in over 2 years. The 93 points were also a season high versus conference opponents.

Just three days later, DePaul hosted Providence looking to move their record to 8-9. The Friars had something else in mind: earning their first conference win of the season while holding DePaul under 70 points.

So far this season, the offense has led the way for the Demons. But Providence showed part of the formula of how you can beat this DePaul team. It starts beating them inside; something the Pirates did by scoring 24 points in the paint to DePaul's 16.

More than that, it was a tale all too familiar to this year's DePaul squad. Providence secured 35 rebounds (29 defensive), while DePaul only grabbed 21. That's been the story all year, as DePaul continues to struggle getting rebounds.

DePaul is only averaging 28.9 rebounds per game, the lowest total in the Big East and currently ranked 300th in the country. Head Coach Kenny Payne has said that as the team plays more man-to-man defense; it means that players need to win contested rebound opportunities. Right now, that's not happening and it has cost DePaul all season.

"I'm surprised by how quickly the offense has come along." said Coach Payne. "We need to work better on defense. Last year, for the guys that returned, this was a pretty good defensive team. This year, it feels like we're starting over."

The defense definitely lags behind the offense, as DePaul is sporting their best offensive rating in a decade: 102.5 (89 Nationally). The defense, on the other hand is allowing 101.3 points per 100 possessions, good for a 231st Defensive Rating.

DePaul is competing well in the Big East this season. While they're only 2-6 in the conference, the coaching staff is hoping more wins are on the way as DePaul tries to get back to .500 on the season.

Freeman-Liberty Back to Practice, 'Close' to Return
DePaul Senior guard Javon Freeman-Liberty has missed the six weeks of the season dealing with an elbow injury. A hyperextension was initially thought to be a UCL tear or injury. Luckily, there was no structural damage and Freeman-Liberty was able to keep his arm in a sling and allow it to heal.

This week, Doctors cleared 'JFL' to return to practice. While he will keep a shooting sleeve on his elbow for the rest of the year, he has begun practicing again with the team. After a brief and accelerated rehab period, it's expected that Freeman-Liberty will take part in basketball-related practices later this week.

DePaul is heading for a difficult stretch of games. Now 7-10 on the season, they've past the halfway point and are into the heart of their conference schedule. DePaul will play 5 of their next six games on the road (as well as 7 of their final 12).

It's expected that Freeman-Liberty will not suit up or be available for the team's next three games. All of those are on the road, before they travel back to host Georgetown in early February.

If Freeman-Liberty starts practicing this week, the coaches have said that is their target game to get him back on the floor against the Hoyas. The team's captain has averaged a team-high 13 points per game, while also running the offense.

It's expected his return would likely put guard Markese Jacobs out of the starting lineup. Jacobs, a sophomore, has started for the Demons in JFL's absence. Freeman-Liberty's return will come at a crucial time, as DePaul attempts to get their record back to .500 on the season.

DePaul Breaks Record Road Losing Streak
DePaul had much to celebrate after their recent road win against Creighton. The Blue Demons broke one of the nation's longest road losing streaks. More than that, they broke the longest conference road losing streak ever in the Big East.

DePaul had last won a conference road game on February 9, 2019 at the end of the 2018-19 season. That win, against Xavier, moved their overall record to 13-9 but DePaul could not turn that win into any momentum at the end of the season.

The team would go on to endure 0 road wins in the Big East for the next two seasons. Then, 3 years to the date, DePaul broke through under new Head Coach Kenny Payne.

Beating Creighton, DePaul found a breakthrough win that hadn't been seen by most of the players on the roster. In a response to a question from media this week, Head Coach Kenny Payne commented on the days since the program's last road win.

"Our SID (Information Department) guys told me that it was 3 years to the day. 1,095 days with no Big East road wins. That's unacceptable for a program like this. But, there's a sense that we did something important. Getting that win... hopefully it can do more for us as we finish this season."

That's the goal as DePaul only has six games remaining in the regular season. All against conference opponents, DePaul is simply looking for a strong finish to Payne's first season.

DePaul Preps for First Round Game with Marquette
Head Coach Kenny Payne is never hard to find in practice. He's vocal and clearly authoritative, trying to rebuild a broken culture at DePaul. For the departing Seniors, it's been a breath of fresh air. Especially heading into the Big East tournament, where the four-year players have only seen one win in their three previous seasons on campus.

DePaul had beaten Xavier in the first round of the 2020 Big East Tournament; which was later cut short before their second round game. This year, they are preparing for Marquette as the 10th seed.

Kenny Payne is aware of DePaul's difficult history in the Big East. Specific to the conference tournament, DePaul is 4-13 and have not made the semifinals of the Big East Tournament.

While getting a chance to play in Madison Square Garden is always welcome, Kenny Payne has been instructing players to play "like you belong, not like a tourist."

That message has been received by those same seniors that are hungry to make an impact at MSG. Team Captain Javon Freeman-Liberty is hoping to make a deep run and earn the NCAA Tournament bid that DePaul has long been searching for.

It starts Thursday with a game against Marquette. All games will be broadcast on Fox and FS1, with a late afternoon tipoff scheduled for DePaul's first round game. The winner will take on Villanova on Friday; the Wildcats are currently the odds-on favorites to repeat as tournament champions.
