#25 Indiana Hoosiers (0-0) @ California Golden Bears (0-0)

Terry Morillo: Our starters tonight are: PG Mike Williams, 6-0 freshman who was a 5-star recruit; SG Jonte Edwards, 6-0 sophomore who started at PG last season and averaged 6.7 ppg, 3.7 apg, and 1.5 rpg; SF Chris Broussard, 6-3 senior who’s been a 3-year starter for us and who averaged 8.8 ppg, 2.4 apg, and 3.2 rpg last season; PF Lonnie Morrison, 6-7 sophomore who came in off the bench as a freshman and averaged 6.2 ppg, 0.8 apg, and 2.9 rpg while hitting 59% of his FG’s; C Marcus Wright, 6-9 junior who started as a freshman at Boston College and was a part-time starter for us last season, averaging 7.7 ppg, 1.2 apg, and 4.0 rpg. Our bench players will get significant playing time also.

Our shots were falling the entire first half. We hit 67% of our FG’s and 7 of 8 from beyond the arc. Cal shot well also but we took a 45-35 lead to the locker room. Cal came out and scored the first 11 points of the 2nd half to edge ahead. Poor shot selection by us plus the refs hammering us with fouls resulted in Cal going ahead by 11. We made a run late but came up short, losing 78-73.

#25 ranked, #4 seed Indiana Hoosiers (1-1) vs #8 seed Western Carolina Catamounts (1-0) [Semi-finals of Tip-Off in Paradise Tournament]

Ramon Montez: We’re starting: PG—sophomore Terrell Anderson (as a sub last season he averaged 1.7 ppg and 1.5 apg); SG—senior Wayne Rush (he started for us last year and averaged 8.8 ppg, 2.3 apg, and 1.9 rpg); SF—junior Martin Towers (he averaged 3.6 ppg, 1.2 apg, and 2.2 rpg); PF—senior Brian Valdez (solid sub for us the past 2 seasons averaging 6.3 ppg and 3.3 rpg); C—junior Marcus Wright (he’s averaging 9.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg thus far this season). Yes, we’re still tinkering with the starting lineup.

The Catamounts upset #6 ranked Maryland 61-57 in the first round of this tournament with their front line starters (SF Aaron Griffin, PF Jamal Howard, and C Jason Humphrey) combining for 45 points and 33 rebounds. Both teams had a tough time getting the ball in the hoop early in the game. We edged ahead but the Catamounts’ SG LaVall Moore began hitting from outside to keep it close. By halftime, though, we led 38-26 due to our control of the boards and making fewer turnovers. We expanded our lead to 26 points after 7 minutes of play in the 2nd half. We went on to drub Western Carolina 83-51. We were +22 on the boards and held the Catamounts’ shooting to just 33%. PF/C Robert Bowie—16 pts, 5 reb; C Marcus Wright—11 pts, 8 reb, 2 blk; PF Lonnie Morrison—10 pts, 6 reb; SG Jonte Edwards—8 pts; SF Chris Broussard—7 pts, 9 reb; SF Martin Towers—7 pts, 4 reb.

#2 seed, #21 ranked Clemson Tigers (2-1) vs #4 seed, #20 ranked Indiana Hoosiers (2-1) [Championship of Tip-Off in Paradise Tournament]

Mike McMillan: Clemson jumped way up into the top 25 and we moved up as well. This game is considered a toss-up. After 3 down years, it looks like Clemson is poised to have a really good season. The Tigers have 2 players (SF Walker Martin and C Donnie Favors) who are both averaging 14.3 ppg and PF Kyprios Pesmazoglou scoring 12.0 ppg. Favors is also averaging 12.0 rpg. Favors is a stud and the best we can hope is to keep him from busting out with a huge game. We’re starting Mike Williams at PG, Jonte Edwards at SG, Chris Broussard at SF, Lonnie Morrison at PF and Marcus Wright at C.

The refs worked us over, putting 3 of our starters on the bench in the first 3 minutes of the game. We fell behind 11-2, but led by SF Martin Towers, we rallied to take a 16-15 lead midway through the half. We outplayed the Tigers and the 3 refs to take a 38-29 lead to the locker room even though Clemson got to the line 14 more time and scored 11 more points on free throws than us. We came out firing darts in the 2nd half and spurted to a 49-34 lead with 16 minutes to go and were up by 24 points 4 minutes later. The rout was on and we led by 38 before finishing with an 84-48 beat down of Clemson to take the championship trophy.

SF Martin Towers—14 pts, 7 reb, 2 stl; PG Mike Williams—14 pts, 6 ast; SG Jonte Edwards—14 pts, 3 reb; PF Lonnie Morrison—11 pts, 5 reb, 2 blk; SF Chris Broussard—10 pts, 2 ast; PG Calvin Heard—8 pts, 2 ast. And we held the Tigers’ C Donnie Favors to 10 pts and 8 reb.

3 runaway wins in this tourney, but now we go up against a series of very tough pre-conference opponents. Just one player on the injured list...freshman PF Chris Greenleaf has a sore hip. Chris hasn't played too much thus far (7 mpg) but when he's been on the court he's shot well and been a real force on the boards plus found open teammates to record a good number of assists.

Consensus opinions of the 4 co-head coaches about players after 4 games:

C—Marcus Wright will continue to be our starter with Robert Bowie being the primary backup at the 5.
PF—We’ll continue to alternate Robert Bowie and Lonnie Morrison as the starter at PF. Brian Valdez will be a principal backup but Chris Greenleaf is showing real promise and will continue to get time.

Our 5 interior players have a combined average at the C and PF positions of about 30 ppg, 20 rpg, and nearly 5 apg.

SF—At this point we’re going to continue starting Chris Broussard, but Martin Towers is really pushing him for the starting role. These 2 guys have combined to average 16-1/2 ppg, and about 8 rpg and 2 apg.

SG—Jonte Edwards has the edge to start, but both Ray Richardson and Wayne Rush can start and play well…and thus far they’ve been hitting a higher percentage of the shots than Jonte. So we’ll see how it all works out. Our 3 SG’s have a combined average of about 18 ppg, 4 rpg, and 4-1/2 apg.

PG—Again, we have 3 guys who are nearly equal. Mike Williams is doing a little better dishing out assists so he’ll be our starter right now. But Calvin Heard and Terrell Anderson have played well so it’s really a tossup thus far. Our 3 PG’s have combined to average about 17 ppg, 3-1/2 rpg, and 11 apg.

Bottom line is that we have 13 very good players, all of whom contribute and deserve playing time. It’s our challenge to figure out how to put them in position to do their very best and keep everyone challenged and happy. Our primary effort at the moment is to shore up the attitudes and improve relations with PG’s Mike Williams and Terrell Anderson since presently the level of both of their relationships with coaches and teammates is low.

Creighton Blue Jays (0-2) @ #20 Indiana Hoosiers (3-1)

Ramon Montez: The game was tied after 5 minutes of play but then our defense shut down the Blue Jays for the next 8 minutes during which we scored 13 unanswered points. Creighton began scoring again and cut our lead in half before we rallied late to finish the half ahead 36-26. In the 2nd half our D was solid while our offense was searing hot and we rolled to an easy 85-62 victory. C Marcus Wright—15 pts, 7 reb, 4 blk; SF Chris Broussard—11 pts, 7 reb, 2 ast; PF/C Robert Bowie—11 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast; PG Terrell Anderson—11 pts, 3 ast; PF Lonnie Morrison—10 pts, 6 reb, 3 ast.

Virginia Tech Hokies (1-1) @ #20 Indiana Hoosiers (4-1)

Terry Morillo: A slow start put us down 10-3. We struggled but edged ahead midway through the half. It wasn’t pretty, but led by Jonte Edwards and Lonnie Morrison who combined for 20 points, we carved out a 39-36 advantage at halftime. Our 2nd half D allowed us to move ahead by 10 with 13-1/2 minutes to go. The Hokies kept things interesting by closing the gap but we prevailed 71-64. Good ball control…we made just 8 turnovers.

PF Lonnie Morrison—17, 7 reb; PF/C Robert Bowie—10 pts, 7 reb, 3 blk; PG Jonte Edwards—10 pts, 3 ast, 2 blk; SG Ray Richardson—8 pts, 2 stl.

#5 Georgia Bulldogs (5-1) @ #10 Indiana Hoosiers (5-1)

Ken Yamoto: We surged up 10 places in the polls. This should be a good game between two top 10 teams. Georgia has beaten three top 25 teams. We scored the first 5 points and then held onto a small lead until the Bulldogs overtook us with 2-1/2 minutes remaining in the half. We trailed 38-37 at the break in a game that was upholding its promise as a barn burner. In the 2nd half the lead shifted back and forth during the first 7 minutes, but Georgia’s success from beyond the arc put us down 67-56 with 10 minutes to go. We tried desperately to catch up but lost our poise (finishing the game with 18 turnovers) and fell 86-73. Georgia definitely showed why they’re ranked 5th in the polls during the final 13 minutes of this game. The Bulldogs’ starting guards hit 10 of 16 of their 3’s and combined for 44 points. Our leaders were: PG Mike Williams—14 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast; SF Chris Broussard—14 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast; SG Jonte Edwards—10 pts; PF/C Robert Bowie—9 pts, 11 reb, 2 blk.

Arizona State Sun Devils (3-1) @ #10 Indiana Hoosiers (5-2)

Terry Morillo: There were 9 lead changes in the first 13 minutes but we then spurted to a 52-43 halftime advantage. We quickly extended our lead to as much as 22 points in the 2nd half and never let the Sun Devils back into the game. We hit 64% of our shots and won 88-72. PG Mike Williams—24 pts, 6 ast, 3 stl; SG Ray Richardson—15 pts, 2 ast, 4 stl; C Mike Williams—14 pts, 2 ast; PF Lonnie Morrison—13 pts, 10 reb, 2 ast; PF Brian Valdez—7 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast.
