The Phenom

12/19: 74-77 at 6-4 Hartford. They took an early lead, got it to 10, then we came back. Down 3 at the break. This is NOT a team we should have lost to. I am NOT happy.

We let them shoot 52.9% while we shot only 38.3%. That was really the big difference, we couldn't make shots at key moments. In the last 10 seconds we missed a three, got the RB, and missed another three. But, really, we shouldn't have been in that position to begin with.

None of the starters shot well. They all had 11 or more points, but they took a lot of shots to get there. I'm feeling very frustrated.

We had for the JAG against a very good Arizona team, the #2 seed, and with a 6-2 record; we're 8-1.

12/23: 77-51 . We took a lead about halfway through. Up 5 at the half. We started the 2nd with an 11-0 run and were in control from then on. This is the way to come back from a loss, especially a bad loss!

21, 12 for Toma, 12, 9 for Bree. Our bench was terrific, 24, 4, 5.

+6 RBs, only 11 TOs. Great D, 35.8%, 30% on threes.

#3 seed, #9 ranked Seton Hall, 12-0, in the semis.

Scout Ty Weel: This is a solid team both inside and outside. Lots of pressure on Herd and Risi, both to score and to defend against very good scorers.

Our bench needs to step up, too. They try to get the ball inside but can shoot outside if you collapse the D. I think we need to go with man most of the time.

On D they play man and they don't press much. We need to move without the ball and find the open man. This one will be a challenge.

12/24: 87-65 . Back and forth. We led by 5 at the half. The calls all went against us in the 1st half. We scored the 1st 14 points in the 2nd and it was bye bye Pirates! We've played two top 10 teams and kicked their asses both times.

22 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, only 2 turnovers for Vashon Herd; 6-6 on threes. 15, 3, 3 for Risi. A terrific 16 and 13 for 6th man Gary Demo; Bree was in foul trouble all night and Demo stepped up BIG! Barn and Biel did, too; great night for the bench.

8 TOs; they had 23.

We're ranked! #24.

#1 seed Tennessee, 8-4, for the title. Their strength is outside. Their SG is one of the best in the country. I'm telling coach to play man and double the SG, and 3-2 at times. We're better inside.

12/25: 91-73 and the JAG title . Up 11 with 8 to play. Up 15 at the half. We led all the way.

The SG got 21, but only 8 while it was still a game. We shut him down when we needed to.

21, 6, 4 for Chris Hobs, who actually outplayed their star SG. 20, 4, 6 for Herd, 20, 8 for Bree. We went 15-28 on threes.

It was a great win and a great tourney for us but it kind of sucked to be away on the holiday. It would have been the first Xmas together for Midge and me, and it was a bit of a disappointment for us not to be able to be together.

And on top of all that we had to take a night flight back home because we have a game tomorrow, 12/26. Rick Hopeless, along with his other talents, is a scheduling genius.

12/26: 95-63 4-5 Houston here. Again tonight we jumped out to an early lead. Up 19 at the half.

21, 5 for Risi, 15, 16 for Toma, 16, 4 for Bree. Good guard play, 8 TOs, good bench play, 19, 7, 6.

We end pre-conference play at 12-1, ranked in the Top 25. Wee beat the #3 and #9 teams and beat other good schools- Georgia, Arizona, Tennessee, Houston... Looking forward to A10 play!

12/28: Midge and I went to visit my parents for a late holiday celebration. She hadn't met my folks so I guess it was kind of a big deal I think my parents were so happy that I was bringing ANY woman to meet them that she had a lot going for her right off the bat. In any case everyone got along really well and it was a nice time.

1/1/2025: Ranked #23. NET #5.

1/2: 72-65 at 8-3 George Washington. We expected a tough game and early on we got one. Up 4 at the half. We took control in the 2nd and the final was the closest they ever got.

We were led by Toma with 19, 9, and Risi, with 20, 4.

Herd didn't have a great night at PG with 6 TOs, but the team had only 11.

GW figured to be one of our toughest A10 rivals and we won on their court so that's a great sign.

A disaster for Midge in her A10 opener. Her one and only good guard, Della Bates, suffered a high ankle sprain and is out for 2-4 weeks. Those things don't usually heal quickly.

The team is 8-5, but tough times lay ahead. "Hey, the way I figure it this is a chance for two seniors that weren't going to get a chance. Jenny Wray will start at PG and Lucy Morr will be at SG, where's she's been all season. They're both seniors and I'm going to work hard with them but never show anything but confidence in their ability. With some luck we can go .500 until Della gets back."

1/5: 99-60 vs. 5-7 Duquesne here. As we seem to do most nights we jumped out to a big early lead. Up 18 at the half.

26, 8 for Risi, 16, 8, 3 with 6 steals for Toma, 15, 11 for Bree. Our scouting report said their strength was inside but we absolutely overpowered them inside.

Great bench play tonight.

#3 guard Arvid Biel sprained an ankle. Out about a week. SF Len Barn is going to get Biel's minutes.

Midge's team lost by 19 in their first game without Della Bates, and they had 27 turnovers.

"No place to go but up. Jenny and Lucy were really down. I told them we're just going to keep working hard and we'll get better and better the harder we work. I didn't lay any blame on them or act like I was pissed or disappointment. I'm using the 'Phee Nom' approach."

"Good plan. I'll try to be at practice when I can and I'll back you up on all of that."

"Great. Feel free to take either of them aside at any time."

1/9: 96-82 vs. 7-7 ST Joe here, but it wasn't that close. Up 14 at the half. We've just been walking over most of our opponents. The problem with that is that we need to play some tough games to get ready for the post season where we absolutely WILL play some tough games.

19, 8, 6 with 5 steals for Toma; hell of a game! 20, 5 for Risi, 17, 5 for Bree, 12, 7 for 6th man Gary Demo. Only 7 TOs.

#17, 15-1, 3-0, NET #7. #1 in the nation in PPG and Offensive rating. #2 in Overall NET. +18.8 PPG, which is amazing! +5.4 RBs, -7.3 TOs.

Risi leads us with 17.4 PPG, and he's 3rd in both RBs and assists. Doesn't turn it over and plays great D. 15.7, 8.5 for Toma, #2 in points, #1 in RBs, and his D is solid, too. Our other 3 starters all average 10.1 or more. Bree is 2nd in RBs with 7.3.

1/12: 77-58 at 9-7, 1-2 ST Bonnie. Back and forth for the entire half. Up 5 at the break. They stayed with us until the last 4-5 minutes, which is more than most teams have done.

21, 2, 5 for Risi, 16, 9 for Toma, 11, 11 for Bree, 11, 8 for sub F Len Barn.

Great D, they shot 38.2%, 2-18 on threes. +14 RBs.

We're alone in 1st place. #15, NET #7.

Midge's team is 0-3 since Bates went down but they're getting better. Last game was a 4 point road loss.

"I have to say the guards are getting better but it's a process and they're never going to be very good. We're 8-8 and we absolutely NEED a win. We're playing a weak team here next and it's a must win game."
