The Phenom

3/5: Frosh Marq Feld has declared for the draft. I'm not shocked but I am disappointed. He's my first ever to do this, and I wish him every success.

3/9: We'll play #9 seed UConn, 14-16, 9-11. Now UConn is a school I'd move to if they made an offer. A great program that's been down for a while but with the resources and support to get back up. Close to my parents, actually closer than where I am now.

Anyway, we beat them by 33 and 19.

3/10: 73-49. We led throughout the 1st half. Up by 25 at the end. Our D was stifling and this was never a game.

22, 12 for Stan, 12, 3, 8 for Gazu, 8, 13 for Tria.

+16 RBs, 8 TOs. They shot 30.4%, 30% on threes. We were 3-8 from the line. If we lose again this season it will very likely be at least partly due to our awful free throw shooting.

#5 seed Butler, 21-12, 9-7, in the semis. We won by 18 there. We feel like we're a lot better. We just need to play our game.

3/11: 75-68. We came out flat. I didn't call a time out and yelled to them that I wasn't going to. That didn't work so I put in the entire 2nd team. They wanted to play but it didn't get much better. We were up by only 1 at the break. It took a long time, and we never established a big lead, but we got the win.

No stand out player. 6 guys had between 14 and 9.

+5 RBs. They were worse from the line than we were- 62.5% for us, 51.9% for them. We held them to 40.7% but they made 10 threes. Once again, we won it in the paint, 38-16.

Disastrous injury. Starting PG Brian Ward broke his left foot and his season and college career are over. We'll put Gazu at the Point and Mike Wins at SG, but this certainly hurts our chances moving forward.

And, as expected, it's #2 seed, #4 ranked Georgetown, 29-4, 12-4, for the title. And for the third time this season we play them at less than full strength. They won by 3 in OT at our place and then we won by 2 at their place.

We need to stop their SG, or at least control him, and we need to come up big inside against a very good inside team. We hold a slight statistical edge in most areas but poor free throw shooting could do us in if all else is about equal, which it may well be.

3/12: 76-59! We took an early lead, stretched it out. Up only 6 at the half though. We took control in the 2nd half. I'm kind of amazed that we did this so convincingly with our PG out.

17, 11 for Stan, 13, 7, 3 for Hawk, 12, 6 for Feld. Good bench play.

We held them to 31.4% from the field, and 2-19 on threes. Great win!

We'll be a #1, but where?

#1 Midwest. Probable opponents if we make a run: Seton Hall in the Sweet Sixteen, and we've owned them, either #5 ranked Indiana, or #8 ranked Gonzaga in the Elite Eight. But we need to get there without our starting PG so who knows?

3/15: #16 seed Maine, 17-15, is first up. This one should not be a challenge.

3/16: 71-54. They hung with us. Up only 6 at the half. Whistle happy refs ruined the flow of this game- 45 fouls called.

20, 10 for Feld, 17, 6 for Stan. Good bench play.

+9 RBs, 9 TOs (They had 23). Both teams shot poorly but we took 25 more shots and made 8 of them and that was more than enough.

#8 seed Xavier, 21-11, in the 2nd round. They won by 8 at their place in our only meeting.

On paper this one's pretty easy. If we play good D and find the open man we should be fine.

3/18: 80-61. Back and forth. A late mini-run put us up 10 at the half. We took firm control early in the 2nd half.

15, 9 for Stan, 15, 5, 3 for Gazu, 14, 4 for Tria, 13, 5 for Juli.

7 TOs to 23 for them. As usual we took a lot more shots- 20, and we made 10 of them.

#4 seed, #12 ranked Seton Hall in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 14 and 18 during the season.

Interestingly enough they are favored by 1 1/2. They work it inside, usually to their PF and SF more than their C. So we need to play solid inside D.

On O they play mostly man so we need to find the open man.

3/23: 80-77. We took a lead right away, got it to 10 quickly. Then they came back and caught up and even went ahead. Down 3 at that half. Back and forth in the 2nd. Then we went on a big run about midway through. They came back yet again and tied it. Then we scored 6 in a row late. They hit a three at the buzzer. This one was a real challenge. We got a little bit lucky.

Big game for Gabe Stan, 30 and 7. 12, 11, 3, with 3 steals for Feld.

We took only 8 more shots but hit 6 of them. That made up for awful three point shooting, 4-18. The other stats were all about even except for +14 on points in the paint.

#2 seed, #5 ranked Indiana in the Elite Eight. They're favored by 4 1/2, mostly because they have terrific guards and our PG is out. They also have an excellent bench. We need to try to play the game inside.

Their SG gets 23 a game, and he and the PG take very good care of the ball.

On D they press only occasionally, and they play mostly man. We need to be really on our game for this one.

3/25: 93-99. Their SG killed us early so we double teamed him. It didn't help much. He had 34 (!) at the half and we were down 11. We caught up with 7 minutes to play but we just couldn't match them.

Their SG wound up with 39. We shut him down in the 2nd but it was too late.

Sub Angelo Tria had an amazing game, 29 and 8. 6 other guys had between 7 and 13.

+7 RBs. We shot 52.5%, they shot 52.8% but they hit 11 threes and we hit only 5, and we missed 15 free throws, which was way more than the difference. We knew free throws would do us in sooner or later. +22 points in the paint, +17 2nd chance points, but it wasn't enough.

3/26: Georgetown also lost in the Elite Eight so the Big East is done for the season in the big dance.

4/1: Marquette won the NIT, Villanova won the WOL.

4/3: #1 ranked Michigan ST is the national champ. It was nice to hold the title for a year.

4/4: Awards: Gabe Stan makes the Big East 1st team. Sila Gazu and Marq Feld make the 2nd team. I get Big East COY.

Let's see if we get any compelling job offers. I'm ready to go! SO many players leaving- Ward, Gazu, Feld, and Hawk.

4/9: Oregon in the PAC 12. Great program. I'm going to visit.

4/11: I'm going to Oregon. No one else I was interested in offered. Some excellent Southern schools and a couple of very good religious schools, but those two categories are out. Let's see what we can do with the Ducks! Oh, and 1.6 mill ain't bad!

4/13: I'm here, living in grad student housing until I find a place. Looking at some condos that are a 5 minute walk from the Knight Arena, where my office is and where we practice and play.

4/15: Good looking recruit class!

As I look at video we have one very good guard returning and one promising recruit. After that, we'll see. Up front it's better, 2 very good bigs returning, as well as a couple of good looking recruits.

4/16: My #1 left. Hired a new one I like.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase.

Got a HUGE increase. I'll be able to recruit competitively.

The A. D. Here, Kara Fosse, says she wants Oregon hoops, both men's and women's to be among the most elite programs in the nation.

The women also have a new coach, Lu Branz, who did very well at Washington ST. I met her yesterday and I think we'll work well together.

Found a 2 BR condo in that complex near my office. Offer accepted. I should be in sometime in June. I'll need to get my stuff shipped from MA.

Really looking forward to the new start!

5/1: #17 recruiting class.

We're #8 in the first preseason poll.

I buy the National Gold and the International Basic scouting reports.

The area around Eugene is a nice. I really like that it sort of combines urban and rural. Yes, they say it rains a lot. I love rain. It doesn't bother me at all, and I actually don't mind running in some kinds of rain. For the days when it's a nasty rain I'll run on one of the treadmill at Knight Arena.

My parents are too young to retire but I want to get them to spend two weeks of their vacation here this summer. If they like the area maybe they'll relocate here in a few years when they do retire. And yes, I'm probably here to stay.

6/5: Yikes! 3 guys transferred out, 2 SGs and an SF. Not that bad though. One of the Sfs might have gotten minutes. The other two probably would not have. But it will leave me with a short bench.

Looking at transfers.

6/9: Lots of talent in the pool. We offer to 3.

6/12: No takers in the first round. I offer to 3 guards.

6/16: I get a PG and an SG. I think both will help us.

6/25: We're going to the Indy Elite and all of the regional camps.

6/26: 3 scholarships. I'll go 2 and 1 either way.

Settling in here. The closing on the condo was delayed but I'm moving in two days. I donated all of my stuff back in MA and I'll be starting with all new furniture, cookware, dishes... The cost of moving the stuff would have been more than it was worth.
