The Phenom

11/16: 88-68 at Dartmouth. 42-31 at the half. At least tonight, the D was definitely better than it was last year. Time will tell.

Gary Owen took up where he left off last season with 28 and 12. Rookie C Rah Celk had 25 and 6 so we were really solid inside. 12, 5, 8 for SG Shawn Sand. +13 RBs.

We're favoring the inside game this season just because we have so many weapons there.

PF/C Gary Owen: I'm really looking to have a killer season this year. Psyched to the max!

C/PF Rah Celk: I think I'm going to like it a lot here at KSU. With Gary Owen and Ren Mert starting with me inside, and Rick Sage and Hank Leon coming off the bench I think very few teams are going stop our inside game.

11/19: 93-69 in the home opener against Hampton. 49-35 at the half. Owen was on fire again, 26 and 9. Celk had 13 and 6 despite early foul trouble that kept him out of most of the first half. 12, 3, 6 for PG Reg Hayd. +21 RBs, 11 TOs.

It's too early to get super excited but i like this team so far.

Ren Mert hurt his foot but I don't think he'll miss more than a practice or two at most.

All 5 recruits signed.

11/23: 79-72 Up only 3 at the half, and it was close all the way. We led most of the way but never by more than 8. 13, 9, 8 for Owen, who flirted with a triple double. 17, 3, 3 for Hayd.

I really liked the way we just stuck to it. We'd build a little lead, they'd come back and make it a one possession game, we'd stay with the game plan and set up a good shot. We moved without the ball really well.,

Frosh C/PF Rah Celk: It's cool playing with all these seniors and juniors and I'm really learning a lot. I'm getting 18 and 5. I'm hoping to rebound better but with two other really good big men in the lineup I'm getting a lot of open looks and layups. Gary Owen is scary good, 22.3 and 10.0, and Ren Mert is an all around player who does everything. And we have two other big guys coming off the bench who don't hurt us at all when they get their chance.

11/26: 91-67 at Lamar. We jumped out to a big early lead and got it to 17 at the half. Celk led us with 27 and 11. 17, 2, 5 for Sand. Rick Sage had 13 and 6 from the bench.

Gary Owen was in foul trouble all night and only played 8 minutes. Our inside depth really came through and Owens fouls weren't really a factor. +19 RBs.

Gary Owen: I'm pissed! The refs were definitely picking on me tonight. All but one of the class was a phantom foul. I didn't get to play hardly at all tonight. Thankfully we won anyway at least.

11/30: 88-73 vs. Bucknell here. Down 3 at the half. We took control in the 2nd, stretching the lead out to 20 a couple of times.

For the 2nd game in a row Owen got into serious foul trouble; he played only 12 minutes tonight. Not sure what this is about since it has not been a problem in the past. He had 12 and 4 in his 12 minutes.

Celk led us with 19, 8, 3. 18, 1, 5 for Sand. 13, 9 for Sage. +8 RBs, 12 TOs.

We're 5-0.

Excerpts from the Post Game Presser:

Q: Coach, it took a while tonight.

Coach: It did. Gary got in foul trouble again and I think that made the rest of the guys a little tentative on D. It was not a well officiated game and the guys had no clue what was going to be called or not called. At the half I told them to just play their game and not think about that. Try to avoid dumb fouls but play tough D. In the end the fouls kind of evened out and we were fine.

Q: Coaches don't talk much about officiating-

Coach: That's because the NCAA fines us if we speak our minds.

Q: Anything to say at all?

Coach: Look, officials miss calls. I think every coach gets that, and it usually evens out. Sometimes a bad call at the end can determine the outcome but usually it's just a bad call. The game is quick, and in tight quarters. Calls are going to be missed. I think what bothers coaches the most, I know it bothers me the most, is inconsistency. When the crew is consistent, even if they miss a few, it's not a big problem. But when there's no way to tell what's going to be called that's tough.
I also get upset when the official right in front of the play doesn't make a call but an official way the hell away from the play makes the call. I've gotten three Ts so far in my career and that was the cause all three times. Enough about officials. What else you got?

Q: Coach, your team is really strong up front but you're up against UCLA next, and Denver right after that. Can you compete with teams at that level?

Coach: We're about to find out. I asked Tank to give us a couple of challenges this season. You learn a lot playing teams like that, win or lose. We're going to do all we can do to win, but the experience will be worth it either way.

12/3: 49-72 at UCLA. Toughest opponent of the season. We started strong and led for most of the 1st half but went in down 6. They increased the lead steadily throughout \the 2nd half, due in large part to foul trouble for Owen and Celk.

We were overmatched but I'm not sorry we scheduled this game.

The difference was bench play. Sage and Dens didn't get it done and no one else did a thing from the bench. Outscored 4-33.

Celk led us with 22 and 6. 12 for Mert. But no one else had more than 7. We took good care of the ball, only 11 TOs, but -7 RBs.

12/7: 79-70 over Denver here. Back and forth through the 1st half. We led by 6 at the half. It was back and forth almost until the end, then we got hot during the last 2 minutes to get the win. Great win over a good team!

Owen had 4 fouls again but he led us with 29 and 9. Celk also had 4 but got 13, 8, 3. +14 RBs. I'm happy with the win but we need more from our bench.

Sub guard Joel Dens: I had hoped for a better senior year. I'm just not playing well. Coach is giving me minutes and I'm not doing much with them. I need to snap out of it.

12/10: 91-65 over Hofstra here. Took us about 8 minutes, then we took control. Up 28 at the half. 18, 12 for Celk, 20, 9 for Owen, 18, 5, 5 for Sand.

+15 RBs, 8 TOs.

We put together a complete game tonight, even our bench play was solid. We're 7-1, Net Rank 63.

Next 3 and 5 of the next 6 are on the road.

12/14: 81-82 at Columbia. Up 5 at the half. We led most of the way, by as many as 14, but we faded at the end. The refs were calling everything, on both teams, and for the last few minutes 4 of our starters had 4 fouls each so we couldn't play hard D. Frustrating loss.

27, 11 for Celk. 17, 4 for Owen.

Excerpts from Post Game Presser:

Q: Coach, this has to be a frustrating loss.

Coach: Yes. It's hard when the officials don't let you play. 49 fouls is ridiculous. I didn't think the game was even all that physical. It just takes you out of your game; there's no flow, no rhythm. And don't get me wrong, it was just as bad for Columbia. Makes you wonder what the hell these officials are thinking sometimes.

12/21: 75-69 at Delaware. Down 3 at the half. We took control in the 2nd, leading by as many as 15 before they mounted a late charge, getting it to 3 twice. But we hung on.

One more pre-conf. game.

17, 3, 5 for Sand, 17, 5 for Celk, 15 for Owen, 13 43 for Dens from the bench. 20 TOs, but they had 19.

Joel Dens, #3 guard: Two good games in a row. I'm starting to feel better about things.
