Hereafter

3/20: LOTS of upsets in the first 2 rounds. Here in the East it's 1 vs. 5, 15 vs. 3. In the Midwest, 8 vs. 4, 7 vs. 6. In the South, 9 vs. 5, 2 vs.
3. In the West, 1 vs. 5, 2 vs. 14.

3/22: We play #5 seed Washington, 24-10. We have a very big advantage inside.

3/23: Tied after 10. They're playing hard, and our D is sloppy. 47-36 after a late rally. 14 for Coop. We get the lead to 20 with 13 to play. Subs are in early.

94-69. Probably our last easy win. 17, 3, 7 for Dub Wite. 5 other guys made big contributions on O and we played solid team D. 9 TOs.

Another injury, this one minor. Sub guard Ed Nole will mess our next game with an arm injury. But if we win he'll be back for the next one.

Bench Coach Shay Corr: Now it starts to get challenging.

Jed Clark: Count on it! But this is what it's all about!

3/24: #3 seed, #11 ranked, #15 NET Tennessee in the Elite Eight. Their starting C broke his elbow two weeks ago. He's their leading scorer, 2nd leading rebounder, and maybe their best defender. This injury will make a very big difference; we probably would have been favored anyway but this makes it even bigger. We score 9 more a game and have a big advantage on the boards, and inside in general.

3/25: They're playing well early. Down 4 after 10. It's a battle, 31-30 at halftime! 12 for Miro but no one else has more than 5. Only 4 TOs. Wolf has 3 fouls and we're shooting only 37.9%. But they're shooting 26.9%. -5 from the line.

“You know what's at stake!”

We're down 9 with 11 ½ left. Down 8 with 7 to go. It's not happening.

60-70. One of our worst offensive performances of the season. We shot 32.2%, 3-15 from behind the arc. Lowest previous point total was 68, then 71.

They crushed us inside, 28-52 for the starters. -19 RBs, even in the paint. Just awful.

Shay Corr: Not the way we wanted to end our season.

Jed Clark: Nights like this happen but it sucks when they happen in the tournament. Oh well. Try again next year.

4/3: #5 ranked, #2 seed Illinois beat Tennessee for the title.

4/4: Awards: I get National COY. Mal Miro is a 2nd team All American.

In the Big 10, Miro and Wolf make the 1st team. I get COY.

4/9: TP up to 82.

I'm not going anywhere.

4/23: I ask for money.

We get $$15,500. We don't have the kind of money the top schools have.

We end 35-3, disappointingly only as far ad the Elite Eight. Overall, for 32 seasons, 980-202, .829. We'll hit 1000 wins next season, almost certainly.

4/24: Total blackout in the middle of the “night shift.” We've continued with monthly drills, at all times of the day and night, so our people were prepared.

There were only a few minor injuries to people who did not follow protocol.

The issue was fixed reasonably quickly. The shuttles were full but none had to leave the ship.

“Great job the Zeelah did for us!”

“Mick, they made it clear that the ship could not be made 100% trouble free. It's entirely possible that the changes the Zeelah made were responsible for us fixing the problem so quickly.”

“Right.”

5/1: Preseason #2 behind Wisconsin. Recruiting class #1.

5/18: We've been having small but regular system and computer issues. All are easily resolved.

“I'm telling the Council that the Zeelah screwed up our systems!”

“Mick, we've been through this. If they screwed up our systems why is everything so easy to fix?”

“Sooner or later we'll get the answer to that and I'm pretty sure we won't like it!”

5/29: We lose one. He didn't figure in our plans. We want a guard.

Round 1: Offer to a B. No.

Round 2: We offer to the same guy who now has us in his top 5.

6/25: We'll go to the Indy Camp.

6/26: 1 scholarship. We'll take the best player we can get, regardless of position.

Vic Coop was drafted #4, Ed Nole #5, Dub Wite #51.

7/3: “Jed, you never seem to age.”

“Good genes, Hali. I feel more aches and pains that I used to.”

“Your ten years older than me and you look ten years younger and you have a lot more energy.”

“I love my work and coaching, and everything I do, and you, of course. I think all of that has a lot to do with it.”

“Well, send a little of that Fountain of Youth this way!”

8/7: PF/C Mal Miro is #8, , and F/C Abe Wolf #10 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to the #5 recruit, a PF.

Problems large and small continue to happen on a daily basis on the ship, and even from time to time on the probes. All of them have been quick, easy fixes.

“Mr. Chair, what are we doing about these never ending problems?”

“Our computer people, engineers, and all who hold executive positions are investigating- checking systems, checking computer programs, really checking everything. We're using robots as well.”

“Maybe using robots isn't such a great idea. They could be corrupted, too.”

“Mr. Chair, Mick makes a good point about the robots. Let me assure the Council that we are checking robot programming as well.”

“We're in a hell of a mess.”

“Mr. Chair, we are NOT in a hell of a mess. Everything is running smoothly with only minimal issues of short term duration.”

That started a debate that brought more heat than light and didn't resolve a thing.

“Let's keep doing all the checking we can do.”

9/11: We get our recruit early. He had us at #1 so it's not a shock. He looks like a very good one!

9/18: We're going to the Tip-Off in Paradise. We play UConn. A challenging schedule!

9/20: Power went out during the “night” again. This time it was a bit harder to fix. The shuttles were deployed and people stayed in them for about 12 hours. So an elapsed time of about 17 hours before everyone was back on board.

10/2: First day of practice. We should challenge for the national title again this year.

10/8: “No solutions in sight, Jed. No indications of what's causing the problems and whether it's one thing, some related things, or totally separate issues.”

10/25: Fewer incidents but they're still occurring.

11/12: Here's the lineup, and 7 players are sharing the minutes more or less equally.

Junior Ike West is starting at PG.

Soph Ron Ells, who started for Ohio ST last season, is at SG.

Our #3 guard, Josh Buck, get equal minutes with the other two, and plays both guard spots. #4 guard is junior Nate Mott. #5 and #6 are frosh who are not ready. I should have red shirted one or both of them. Mal Tane needs serious work on D, and so does Marc Lane.

4 players share the 3 inside spots:

Soph Abe Wolf is back at SF.

Soph Mal Miro is back at PF.

Frosh Jim Herd is at C.

Getting equal minutes with the other 3 is our only senior, Ron Stou.

#5 F/C, and capable of doing some very good things, is junior Mel Fick. #6 is frosh Jam Berd, who is decent but not at the level of the first 5.

The good thing about all of this is that no one should get too tired!

We have no leads regarding the issues but they are definitely diminishing.

11/15: We start tomorrow with #4 ranked Syracuse here. Not much to go on but they seem to be very good so we're starting with a real challenge!

11/16: As expected, it's a battle! Up 5 after 10. We get it to 10. 45-36 at the half. 17, 9 for Wolf, 14 for Herd. +9 RBs, 3 TOs, but this one is far from over! Up 13 with 10 to play. They're coming back fiercely!

86-73. They got it to 5 then we came back again.

24, 17 for Wolf, 27, 6 for Herd. +17 RBs, +12 in the paint.

Tough win. Ike West twisted an ankle badly late in the game and is out for a couple of weeks.

11/17: Off to the Tip-Off in Paradise. How TF we're only the #4 seed is completely beyond me. We play #5 seed UConn, 1-0. We're a big favorite but they beat the #9 ranked team by 9 in their opener, and they look TOUGH inside.

11/18: UConn takes an early lead. We come back. Up 11 after 10. The lead goes to 20. 46-30 at the half. 17, 7 for C Jim Herd. +10 RBs, good D. Up 20 with 10 to go.

103-85. Huge game for Herd, 33, 12. 19, 6, 3, 5 for Wolf, 16, 9 for Stou. +14 RBs, only 10 TOs.

“Found it, Mr. Chair!”

“Go ahead, Marta.”

“It was a very simple error buried extremely deeply in one of our most basic computer programs, one that affects everything.”

“So they put something in the computer after all.”

“Given how harmless it is I'm guessing it was a simple mistake.”

“Right.”

“Mick, almost every error that happened was easily fixable, and every single one was fixable sooner or later.”

“They told us they were installing something that would detect and fix errors.”

“They also told us that it wasn't 100% foolproof.”

“Yeah. I wonder what other surprises there will be.”

11/19: All the favorites won in the first round of the Tip-Off.

#20 ranked, #1 seed Vanderbilt, 2-0, in the semifinals. They can score inside and out and they played very good D in their first two games. But they played weak teams.

Game time: We miss our first 7 shots. Up 3 after 10 but we're shooting 29.4%. Then we heat up. 42-23 at the half. Held them to 27.6% after they hit their first 4 shots. They went 4-25 after that! 12 for Stou, 10 for Miro. +20 inside. Up 24 with 10 to play.

87-68. 3 players had very big games, herd had 20, 12, Wolf had 16, 17, Stou had 21, 7, 4. We were totally dominant inside. +36 in the paint, +21 RBs.

Ron Stou came down with the flu shortly after the game. He won't play much, if at all in the title game.

11/20: Our one recruit signs.

#2 seed, #11 ranked San Diego ST for the title. They are solid outside but weak inside. We should have a huge advantage on the boards. Hopefully it will be enough!

Game time: Down 5 after 10. 37-37 at the half. 12, 7 for Herd, 10, 5 for Wolf. Team stats are pretty even. We're struggling. Down 4 with 10 left.

77-73. Tough one! 21, 14 for tourney MOP Jim Herd. 18, 8 for Wolf, 13, 4, 3, 4 for Ells. We play them again in just a few days.

Stou is back but West will miss more time. We won the tournament without him though.

12/4: We win the last 4 to go 8-0.

We beat #19 Wichita ST 85-71 at home. 25, 9 for Herd, 17, 6 for Wolf, 18, 5 for Stou. We were superior inside. 11 TOs.

We won the rematch with #11 San Diego St by only 78-73 at home. Tough team, beat them by 4 last time. 18, 16 for Herd. We won it inside again.

86-72 over Tennessee here. 18, 11 for Miro, 19, 7 for Herd, 16, 9, 4 for Wolf, 14 for Stou. We have a powerful inside game.

Then it was 95-61 over Arizona here. 19 each for Herd and Wolf, 11, 10 for Miro. +36 in the paint.

We're ranked #1.

Everything is operating smoothly on the ship.

I'm relaxing on the boat and playing piano whenever I can find the time.
