Hereafter

12/29: Close early. Down 4 after 10. Up 5 at the half but it's a battle. Brad is scoring lots of points so far. Up 10 with 10 to go.

83-72 but it was a 2 point game with 2:07 to play. Big game for Brad, 24, 4, 5, with 4 steals. 14, 2, 5 for PG Josh Mill, 13, 5 for Wall.

+10 TOs but -9 RBs, which kept them in it. We won it at the line, 35-44 to 13-16. To me, they were fouling a lot because we were quicker but given that their starting backcourt fouled out their coach was not happy. Can't blame him.

We've now won 10 in a row after losing the season opener to #4 Xavier.

Cleveland ST, 3-8, but 2-0, is here next. Their starters just don't score, but they have a solid bench. This is a team we should beat.

Pluto is in sight. It's not much to see.

1/2/2028: We start quickly. Up by 11 early. +21 after 10. +20 at the half. Up 31 with 10 to go.

85-56. A yawner. 21, 3 for PF Roy Star. Rich Cora had 18, 8, 4 from the bench; he got his chance because C Chris Mack was in foul trouble all night. 12, 4, 6 for Brad.

We shot an amazing 56.7%. 10 fewer TOs. +30 (!) in the paint.

Next up is a solid contender, Purdue Fort Wayne, 9-3, 3-0. They can score, but they don;t defend as well as we do. They shoot well and all 5 starters can score. They shoot the three. We'll need to be on our game.

Mike Reed, a big guy who doesn't play much, is out for about a week with a sore calf.

We had a New Year's Eve celebration on the ship. Lacy and I went but we didn't stay until midnight. We had fun while we were there but Lacy tires easily.

1/3: Here we are, in orbit around Pluto, the dwarf planet more than 3 billion miles from the Sun. Nearly -400 Fahrenheit. Pluto and its moon, Charon are about the same size and both are smaller than Earth's moon.

We're going to explore the Kuiper belt then head for deep space.

1/5: Down 1 after 10. It's a battle! Up 4 at the break. We have the edge inside. Up 6 with 10 to play. They're tough!

92-69! BIG late run did it. All 5 starters in double figures and 20 from the bench. 16, 7 for Mack, 15, 3, 6 for Brad, 15 for Wall. +8 RBs, -9 TOs. That gave us 21 more shots, and that was the difference.

+18 in the paint, +15 on 2nd chances.

The refs blew a lot of whistles, mostly against us. They went to the line 33 times, we went 15. But those extra 21 shots from the floor did it for us.

Next 3 on the road, starting with 9-5, 3-1, IUPUI. They have an excellent C and a solid bench. They score a lot of points but don't defend very well. This should be a challenge.

Charon is less interesting than Pluto. I mean Pluto is interesting in its own way, of course, but it's too cold for any possibility of life as we know it.

1/9: We fall behind early, then come back. Up 2 after 10. They go on a run. Down 11 at the half. Down 3 with 10 to go. It's a battle!

77-79. They won it on a buzzer beating three from 25 feet. 17 lead changes, 8 ties, and this is a game we could have won. Both teams made 3 threes and 16 free throws. We were 29-63 from the floor and they were 30-66. We were +1 on the boards, -2 in TOs. So the stats show it for what it was, a very, very close game.

Roy Star led us with 18 and 6. Sub F/C Rich Cora had 15 and 9. Their C and SG had 17 each. We expected that from the C but should have done more to stop the SG.

A huge factor was bench production. They were 30, 10, 8 to our 20, 11, 1.

At 9-5, 4-1 Youngstown ST next. This will be another challenging road game. I think we're better at every position except PG, but they have a better bench. Our D seems better and it will need to be. We'll need to turn them over and hold our own on the boards.

We're still examining Pluto and its moons. No real surprises yet.

I took third place in this month's ping pong tournament. I love the game. There's one guy in food services who no one is ever going to beat, but I can take the guy who finished 2nd, and that's the goal.

1/12: We take an early lead and get it to 11. Up 9 after 10. Up 8 at the half. Early 2nd half run puts us up by 19. Up 23 with 10 left. We really heated up in the 2nd half.

84-65. We expected a tougher game. We OWNED the paint. 17, 11 for both Mack and Star, 19, 6 for Wall. +10 RBs, -5 TOs.

We took 11 more shots and made 11 more. +26 in the paint, +10 on 2nd chances.

We're 13-2, 5-1, in a 3 way tie for the Horizon lead. One team is a game back and 1 is 2 games back.

One more road game before this crazy schedule brings us home for 3. We're at 8-8, 2-4 Green Bay. We're definitely the better team. They live and die by the three and when they make them they can be tough to beat.

My mentee, frosh Gaut Wall, is having a terrific season. He's our 3rd leading scorer, 3rd in RBs, 3rd in assists, 1st in steals. He doesn't turn it over much. He's as good a defender as we have with the exception of Marc Brad. He's a big factor in our success. And he still clearly sees me as a father figure. I have to say I really like the kid.

Lacy and I have always enjoyed rigorous hikes in the holo. Now that she's pregnant we're still taking hikes but far less rigorous ones. Sometimes I go out on my own and challenge myself though.

We're heading for deep space. We cross the line beyond which our Sun has no influence tomorrow. The first destination is Proxima Centauri. Proxima b orbits the star and is in the "Goldilocks zone." We're hoping to make some exciting discoveries.

In reality, whatever that is, it would take tens of thousands of years for us to get there. Since we have lots of options regarding manipulating that sort of thing we're going to take a little less than a year. We'll reach the solar system in December, and orbit Proxima b in early January.

1/16: They take an early lead. Down 3 after 10. We take a lead with 5 to play in the half. Up 9 at the break. Down 3 with 10 to play. Back and forth all night.

78-77. Whew! Their PF was very good. He torched us for 25 even though we doubled him for the last 12 minutes.

Chris Mack, who has had 2 excellent games in a row had 24 and 7, including hitting 2 free throws with 2.8 seconds to go. Gaut Wall had 18 and 5.

We won it from the line going 32-42 to 17-27. Their coach took a very bad T early in the 2nd half. Considering that they lost by one that was critical.

Back home for 3, starting with Ill-Chicago, 4-12, 2-5. This is a team we should beat easily, especially at home.

Amazingly enough we only have 2 of the top Horizon teams left on our schedule, one at home, one away.

I entered an eight ball tournament. I'm not a great pool player but i got lucky and finished 7th. It was fun. I actually like nine ball better and I'll enter that tournament when it comes up.

Rec. Dir. Kelly Geer is offering even more activities now that we're in the long journey through empty space between solar systems.

1/19: We expected an easy game and we're out to a quick lead. Up 14 after 10. We breeze to a 21 point halftime lead. Wall and Brad are leading the way. Up 19 with 10 to play.

76-61. It wasn't that close. 14, 15, 3 for Roy Star, 18, 5, 5 for Brad, 14, 4 for Wall. Good bench play.

We held them to 34% from the floor and 2-20 on threes. 9 TOs.

7-10, 3-5 Detroit Mercy is next. The only way they can beat us if we play our game is if they get really hot on threes.

The food has been better than usual lately. I can't account for that since we're getting the same food and the same choices that we always get, but people are talking about the food and nearly everyone agrees that it's really good right now.

The ongoing stats anomaly regarding a grain shortage has been with us for a very long time. The counts consistently show a shortage, right now with wheat and oats but it varies. But despite what the stats show the kitchen staff has plenty of grains to fill all their needs. This one is driving me crazy, but we've all become so accustomed to it we sort of accept it. I won't be happy until I figure it out though.

1/23: We started slow. Up 6 after 10. Our inside game is really cooking. Up 19 as we hit the lockers. Brad is heating up. Up 20 with 10 to go.

79-64. Another easy win. 19, 5, 8 for Brad, 16, 5 for Star. C Chris Mack played only 14 minutes before fouling out but Hemp and Cora played well filling in. Star played only 19 minutes. Good thing we're deep inside.

9 TOs to their 19. We shot 51.9%, and that was the difference.

This team is decent inside but not nearly as dominant as my teams usually are inside. But we're deep, and that makes up for a lot.

We're now 16-2, 8-1, with a 2 game lead in the Horizon, over 3 teams. But we end with LOTS of road games. 7 of our last 11 are away.

10-8, 5-4 Oakland is here next. They have a very good bench and that's where most of their scoring comes from. They rebound well and don't turn it over much. But they play weak D and we'll need to take advantage of that. If we do we'll be fine.

The food is still awesome. The cooks are acting mysterious, like they changed something but they're not saying what.
