1/15/'68: 1/15: We start Big Ten play with a terrible OT loss at Rutgers, a very mediocre team. Not good. We win our next but lose first big man off the bench Pete Alex for two weeks with a bruised triceps.

16-1, 4-1 after 5 conf. games. #1 ranked and in a 3 way tie for 1st in the Big Ten.

I'm setting up at Silver's Gym, one of the boxing training gyms here. I have my own space and and working on signing a few fighters. So far I have a lightweight and a middleweight. I'd like to pick up 3-4 more guys.

1/31: 21-1, 9-1, #1, alone in 1st, one up on #20 Indiana, 3 up on third place. We got our revenge against Rutgers, beating them by 46 at our place.

As I prepare to end, or at least suspend my basketball coaching career I'd love to bow out with national title #12. We'll see what happens.

Frosh PF Dal Lazo is #1 on the Norton list. He's a terrific player!

2/19: 25-2, 13-2. We lost to a decent Michigan team there, then beat #10 Indiana by 14 at their place which leaves them alone in 2nd, 2 back of us. We remain #1 in the country with 5 to play in the regular season; 2 tough road games and Indiana here in the last 5 so we'll need to stay sharp.

A big kid walked into the gym yesterday. There weren't many people here so he walked up to me.

“I want to be a boxer; are you a trainer?”

“Yes I am. How old are you?”

“I'm 16.”

“Any experience at all?”

“No, but I want to learn.”

“What's your name?”

“Harry Sands.”

“Well Harry, get yourself a jock and a cup, a pair of boxing shorts, some good shoes. Here's my card. When you've got all that stuff give me a call. Oh, I'll provide the boxing gloves, the tape for your hands, and the helmet.”

“I don't have the money for all that.”

“Get your self an after school job and save up.”

I had him step into the ring and just move around. I gave him a few instructions and directions. He moved well, looked like a natural. Time will tell.

3/4: We end the regular season at 30-2, 18-2, 4 game lead in the Big Ten. #1 in the country, #1 NET.

Lazo remains #1 on the Norton list. 19.2, 12.2, and he's a very good defender. Senior Art Froz gets 16.4 PPG.

+21.1 PPG, +10.9 RBs, +8.0 Assists, minus 5.4 TOs but we're turning it over 12.6 times a game. I like to keep it under 12. Hopefully that doesn't cause a problem in the postseason.

3/5: Dale Lazo goes pro. No surprise. Everyone else stays.

On to the postseason!

3/9: We play #8 seed Maryland, 19-12, 9-11. We beat them by 16 and 9.

We score the first 10. Up 19 after 10 minutes. 50-25 at the break. 14 for Froz, 13 for Lazo. It's a blowout with 10 to play.

90-57. 22, 11 for Lazo, 23, 4, 6, 3 for Froz. Total control.

We play #13 ranked, #4 seed Indiana, 23-7, 13-7, in the semifinals. We beat them by 14 and 20.

3/10: Up 14 after 10. 45-32 at halftime. 13, 5 for Lazo. Our C, Haya, has 3 fouls. +11 for the bench, +16 inside. We get the lead to 20 and more. Lazo is scoring at will.

90-67. 29, 15 for Lazo. We owned the paint.

#3 seed, #18 ranked Purdue in the title game. They're 24-8, 13-7. Their PG has a bruised calf but he'll play. Not sure how much. We beat them by 20 at our place in our only meeting.

Harry Sands called me and I met him at the gym. He got into his gear and stepped into the ring. He moves well.

I put a wily old veteran in there with him just to spar. They were both wearing helmets and really big gloves. The kid has some very good natural moves and some things I'll need to get him away from doing, but he's a definite prospect. He's about 6'2”, 210, a good size heavyweight with long arms.

After he showered I set him up with a training routine.

“When do I get to fight somebody?”

“When I teach you not to telegraph your right hand. If I put you in there now a smart fighter would see it coming and knock you on your butt.”

3/11: Back and forth early. Up 13 after 10 minutes. 41-25 at the half. Good D, they're shooting 23.1%. We're not playing that well otherwise but the D should get us through. Haya has 3 fouls again. I really gave it to him in the locker room. Up 28 with 10 to play. This one is over.

85-48 and the title. Lazo was tourney MOP but he had a poor shooting night, 3-14. Wound up with 13 and 13 and completely shut his man down. 18, 4 for Froz, 13, 5, 10 for PG Jam Rood. We dominated inside despite Haya being invisible. Sub C/PF Whit Chat had 16 and 8.

Pete Alex hurt his calf. Out for at least three games.

3/12: We're the #1 overall seed, as expected. We'll play #16 play in winner Howard, 14-19.

3/18: Close early, then we heat up. 10 point lead after 10. 47-29 at the half. We're having no trouble scoring; 14, 2, 5, 3 for Froz who has been hot. Only 5 TOs, which makes me happy. Up 14 with 10 to go.

86-72. They hung in and got it to 7 late. 18, 16 for Lazo, 19, 2, 6, 6 for Froz, 12, 5, 10 for Rood. Only 9 TOs tonight.

#4 seed, #18 ranked Indiana in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them 3 times earlier but they can play.

All of our injuries have healed.

Space has been very peaceful for some time. We are nowhere near a solar system and there aren't many space rocks passing by.

3/23: We score the first 12. They come back. Up only 5 after 10. 44-36 at halftime. They're hanging in. Their C and our SF, Fred Rhod, each have 3 fouls. 14, 6, 3 for Lazo, 12 for Froz. Only 4 TOs and good inside play. Up 10 with 10 left. They are playing good ball.

82-73. 23, 13, 3 for Lazo, 15, 2, 3 for Froz. Great bench play. Only 10 TOs.

Starting C Calo Haya broke his arm. He's out for the season. Whit Chat and Pete Alex will get his minutes. Tough time for a starter to go down.

It's #4 ranked, #3 seed Kentucky, 27-10, in the Elite Eight. They can play, especially outside. Not sure they can score enough but if those outside shooters are hitting...

Harry Sands is making good progress. His training has his weight at 214, and he's solid muscle. He's worked hard to stop telegraphing his right hand and rarely does it any more. I keep him sparring with veterans so when he does drop the left to throw the right he gets tagged every time. That's the best way for him to learn. I'm not quite ready to put him in the ring for his first fight yet, but it won't be long.

3/25: Close early again. Up 6 after 10. Lazo is on fire. We go on a big run. 45-21 at the break. 18, 8 for Lazo. We own the paint.

73-62 but it wasn't really that close. 27, 14, 3 for Lazo. Very good inside play but 17 TOs. Alex and Chat were adequate in the middle. Hope we don't play a team with a world class Center!

#2 seed, #7 ranked, #10 NET Kansas ST, 30-8, in the national semifinal. They're an outside focused team and they play very good D. We'll need to play well.
