Back at home, Alaska Anchorage faces the Cal. St. Fullerton Titans, who are 6-15 and 3-9 in the Big West. They also only have two 6'8 tall players in their frontcourt, so it's a good matchup for the Seawolves.

That doesn't lead to an immediate big lead for them, however, as they only lead 32-30 at halftime, with Matt Louis having 15 points.

But they pulled away in the second half, leading by over 20 with 7-8 minutes left, at which time a lineup of Strong, Fleming, Rowell, Haymon and Geyer was put in, closing out a 75-62 victory. Otis Strong, next season's favorite to be starting PG, had 6 points in 7 minutes, a good sign.

The second home game back is against UC Santa Barbara, who are 11-11 and 9-4 in the Big West.

In the first half it was close throughout, with the Seawolves falling behind the Gauchos late but eventually taking the lead back, leading 38-36 at halftime.

Fleming picked up his third foul, so more minutes for Omara at SG again with Crosby still playing a lot of SF. Crosby and Blake then picks up their fourth foul with 12 minutes left, which isn't ideal.

And.... with 10 minutes left Louis and Blake foul out. What is going on?????!!! At least Gaither got his first 20 point output of the year.

The backcourt tires, so for the first time this year, Otis Strong and Jeff Rowell get competitive minutes, while down 65-62 with 8:11 left in the game. And with a 6'11 center in and Louis fouled out, Geyer comes back into the rotation soon after. Fortunately one of their big men fouls out. But then Smiley fouls out with Crosby on 4 fouls. So Gaither and Louis will have to be our frontcourt for the rest of the game. Gaither tires, so Flemming and Crosby as the "forwards" is tried for a couple of possessions.

Ultimately, UC Santa Barbara is victorious, winning 78-75.

UAA has no Norton semifinalists, of course.

The recruiting efforts have shifted, with Kamouna being the main target as he is 6'10, 240 lb and at least will talk to recruiting coordinator Mike Dunlap and is more obtainable in general (689 vs 98) than Brown, though he will still be pursued. While Leep would be nice to have, a 6'1 SG who is still in the same star category as Kamouna is not a priority for a team lacking size and with too many guards.

Funnily, Brown responds to a text... but has to "run" and says TTYL on the first question. Welp. And Kamouna wouldn't even talk this week.

Enjoying this one. Pulling for the Seawolves! Hope the recruiting picks up... When I was a kid, I remember NC State, UNC and Duke playing in the Great Alaska Shootout. It was a GREAT tournament

With five games left in the regular season, Alaska Anchorage sits in fifth place in the Big West with 1 9-6 conference record and are 12-12 overall, and heads back on the road to face the Cal Poly Mustangs, who are one spot ahead of them at 9-5. The good news for the Seawolves is that the Mustangs start two 6'7 SF's and their starting center is a 6'8 PF, with only a 6'7 PF and 6'8 C coming off the bench. Geyer isn't gonna play at all today, It's time for Gaither and even Smiley to see some minutes at center even more.

However, this does not lead to immediate success, as they trailed 51-39 at haltime. But in the second half they made a comeback, tying the game with 7 minutes left, taking the lead 42 seconds later. Despite Cal Poly taking a late lead, a Matt Louis slam dunk with 37 seconds left gave Alaska Anchorage the lead, and ultimately won 75-70. Louis was the player of the game with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

To cap off the brief road trip, is a trip to Los Angeles for a matchup against Cal St. Northridge, who have a 7'1 center. Will want to keep Louis on him.. at all times. But they don't have too much size besides that.

The defenses did not show up in this one. 51-50 at halftime, and in the second half Haymon, Rowell and Strong were forced back into the rotation due to foul trouble and tired legs, and in the end the Seawolves won 96-92 in a shootout, with Louis leading in points and rebounds with 26 and 10 respectively.

The team headed back home to Alaska, having five days off until a game against the UC-Riverside Highlanders on 2/22 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Up to a 37-30 lead, trouble was still brewing as Livan Gaither had four fouls at halftime. But somehow, he didn't foul once in the second half, as Alaska Anchorage pulled off a 86-83 win.

With two games left in the regular season, the Division I newcomers sit in third place in the Big West with a 12-6 record, 15-12 overall, and are 149th in the NET.

Next up for the Seawolves is senior night on Feb. 24. For the final home game of their careers, David Omara and walk-on Adam Finneman join fellow seniors Johnny Pengelly, Lee Crosby and Livan Gaither in the starting lineup. Quadree Fleming is nursing a sore foot and is at 89%, so it may be a rotation of seven for this game, with spot minutes for Strong and Powell if need be. Pengelly stays at PG, with Omara coming in for at SG and Crosby sliding over to SF to take Smiley's place, and Louis sitting with Finneman starting at power forward and Gaither being the starting center.

Finneman starts the game against the UC-Irvine Anteaters, but exits with 19:34 left in the first quarter, as Louis comes in. It's close throughout the first half, with UCI pulling away but UAA recovering to a 34-34 halftime tie. Louis leads the team with 13 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. The second half remained a close game, with Gaither being on 4 fouls for awhile. While the Anteaters started to pull away in the second half of the second half, the Seawolves fought right back to make it 67-67 with two minutes left.A pair of Gaither free thows and a three from Michael Blake puts them up 72-67, and they win 81-73. Louis and Smiley came off the bench to score 24 and 14 points, with Crosby scoring 13, and Pengelly had 7 points and 7 assists.

The final game of the regular season takes place on the 1st of March, at the Cal St. Bakersfield Roadrunners. The lineup returns to normal for this one, with Pengelly, Crosby, Smiley, Gaither and Louis starting. The Roadrunners got the better of the Seawolves in the first half, leading 36-29 at halftime. While UAA made a comeback in the second half, it wasn't enough, with CSB winning 71-67.

At the end of the regular season, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves finished in a tie for second place in the Big West Conference, going 13-7 within the conference and an overall 16-13 record, ranking 141 in the NET.

Next up is the Big West Conference tournament.

Postseason basketball is here! After receiving the good news that none of our players declared for the draft, we received our second round opponent, the Cal Poly Mustangs. Cal Poly is 14-15, but 11-9 in the Big West, finishing in fifth place with a NET of 214. Both of us received byes from the first round. And fortunately, they aren't too tall in the frontcourt, as mentioned before, so a lot of small ball as we won't have to rely on Geyer to spell Louis.

Alaska Anchorage gets off to a tremendous start, leading 31-16, with Otis Strong able to get some minutes at SF when others were tired, and the score was 50-29 at halftime. The second half was much of the same, winning in a 101-72 blowout as everybody on the bench got into the game, giving them valuable experience. Louis led the team with 16 points, with Jeff Rowell right behind him off the bench with 13 points.

Our opponents in the semifinals with be the UC-Riverside Highlanders, who were the 9 seed but knocked out the 1 seed UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos. The Winner will play 2 seed Long Beach State, who advanced to the finals with a win over 3 seed UC-Irvine.

The first half was solidly controlled by Alaska Anchorage, up by a few possessions most of the way through, leading by a score of 45-38 at halftime with Blake and Smiley having 11 points each. However, UCR dominated the second half, winning 87-74.

Our season is over. We went 17-14, 13-7 in the Big West, and made the Big West Tournament Semifinals.

Onto recruiting for us, as the contact period begins in a week/

Recruiting

Postby Jake8005 » Fri Jun 30, 2023 6:26 pm

Brown and Kamouna still won't talk to us. Ouch. We really need bigs and they're not interested

We did home visits to them, Mintz and Kent, and pitched location to all of them as they valued it a lot, as did Kent's parents. Hopefully it works out.

Mintz liked his visit. Kent didn't. Brown didn't. Kamouna didn't. Crap. We're gonna have to pray that we can get somebody in the portal.

Kent's interest did go back up the next week though.

Iowa won the NCAA Tournament with a 91-85 win over Michigan State, with final four losses by Michigan and Ohio State preventing two possible rival matchups.

Matt Louis was named the first team All-Big West Center! The 7'1 center averaged 14.9 rebounds, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. Gaither made the second team as well with 11.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

BROWN TALKED TO US!! We got his opinion on Academics, school prestige coach discipline and playing time. He values academics and discipline somewhat, and playing time a little less, and school prestige not much. I think I'll pitch discipline to him since location didn't work.

Kamouna talked to us................. but the phone battery reached 0% before we could ask anything....... ooooooof.

I visited Brown, and pitched playing time to Kent, and pitched discipline to Kamouna.

As expected, Edwards signed his LOI, and so did Kent! However, Brown and Kamouna didn't like their visits. I visited again to pitch playing time, but I doubt this will work.

It didn't. As was the case for facility upgrades. So, we head into a new season.

New season

Postby Jake8005 » Fri Jun 30, 2023 7:43 pm

Into the new season. I have 7 scholarships open. OMG. We have $73,000 to spend but I doubt we use it.

Our recruiting class ranked 254/358. Better than I had expected.

We have a new roster as well

Starting lineup

Eric Edwards FR. Houston, AK. PG 6'3 210 lbs. 3/4.5
Quadree Fleming SR. Anchorage, AK. SG 6'2 180 lbs. 3/3.5
Michael Blake SR. Anchorage, AK.SF 6'7 243 lbs. 2/2.5
Herb Smiley JR. Nikiski, AK. PF 6'7 198 lbs. 3/3.5
Matt Louis C. Seward, AK. C 7'1 275 lbs. 2.5/3

Bench

Main subs:
Otis Strong SR. Anchorage, AK. PG 6'2 183 lbs. 2/3.5
Jeff Rowell SR. Homer, AK. SG 6-3 186 lbs. 2/3
John Haymon JR. Fairbanks, AK. PF 6'6 211 lbs. 1.5/3.5

Secondary subs:
Travis Stokes FR-(R). Fairbanks, AK. SF 6'6 2-2 lbs. 1/3.5
Kelvin Geyer JR. Soldotna, AK. C 6'9 267 lbs. 1/2

Garbage time:

Jacob Cox SO. Kenai Central, AK. SF 6'4 234 lbs. 0./0.5 (walk-on)

?

Clint Kent FR. Eagle River, AK. SF 6'8 202 lbs. 1/2.5

We purchased the premium west report.

UH OH.

Haymon and Geyer are transferring for more playing time. This is not good, we only have two big men on the roster now, and they're the only Alaskan players in the portal..

Geyer transferred to New Hampshire, and in one of the last rounds, Haymon transferred to Marist. This is not good.

We have gained FIVE walk-on players, and some ratings have been updated, so here's the new lineup and the bench:

Otis Strong SR. Anchorage, AK. PG 6'2 183 lbs. 2/3.5
Quadree Fleming SR. Anchorage, AK. SG 6'2 180 lbs. 3/3.5
Michael Blake SR. Anchorage, AK.SF 6'7 243 lbs. 2/2.5
Herb Smiley JR. Nikiski, AK. PF 6'7 198 lbs. 3.5/4
Matt Louis C. Seward, AK. C 7'1 275 lbs. 2.5/3

Bench

Main subs:
Eric Edwards FR. Houston, AK. PG 6'3 210 lbs. 1.5/2
Clint Kent FR. Eagle River, AK. SF 6'8 202 lbs. 1/4

Secondary subs:
Travis Stokes FR-(R). Fairbanks, AK. SF 6'6 2-2 lbs. 1/2.5

Garbage time:

Jacob Cox SO. Kenai Central, AK. SF 6'4 234 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Tony Jaacks JR. Anchorage, AK. PF 6'8 208 lbs. 0.5/0.5 (walk-on)
Erick Frederick SO. Seward, AK. PF 6-7 238 lbs. 0/0 (walk-on)
Lincoln Huge FR. Anchorage, AK. C 6-10 253 lbs. 0/0 (walk-on)
Eugene Tucker FR. Wasilla, AK. PG 6-2 187 lbs. 0/0 (walk-on)
Tahric Bickerstaf FR. Anchorage, AK. SG 6'0 194 lbs. 0/0 (walk-on)

It seems Adam Finneman didn't return to be a walk-on. Or maybe he was a senior.

As for the lineup, I really like it. Strong isn't experienced and could be a weak point at point guard/ Fleming used his late season breakthrough to join the lineup, and Blake gets elevated off the bench. Smiley slides over to PF which will suit him better, and the man mountain Matt Louis remains at center.

The major issue is we lack any depth whatsoever. Kent will come off the bench to play PF, and Smiley can play the other minutes at center, but it's not good.

We elect to attend the Georgia Superstar camp (third tier national event) and the western region camp in Las Vegas.
