3 Point Dopes: The Norfolk State Spartans Story.

Todd Thundercock's Humble Origins

In the year of 2022, Todd Thundercock has been sitting in his Mother's Basement for 24 years. Todd has honed his sports knowledge by viewing every analytics site he could find online. Never attending an actual sporting event or playing basketball ever, that's boring and scary. All he needs to build a winning team is look at statistics and he'll find the Moneyball secret. In basketball, all you have to do is shoot 3s. They count for 1/3 more points than 2 point shots! If you make 3s at a 40% rate, that's like 2s at a 60% rate! Simple mathematics! Then get some athletic dudes that are tall and can run, whatever, 3 3 3 3!

Meanwhile, Norfolk St. coach Robert Jones just left his head coach position. His ratings are high enough now that Power 5 teams might hire him as a 3rd assistant so he's out of here. Mr. Jones led Norfolk St. to the most 3 pointers scored and attempted every season at Norfolk State, so it's a match made in heaven...

Norfolk St. hires a 24 year old college dropout NEET that's never touched a basketball court to be their Head Coach. Sure, why not! Norfolk St. proving the validity of their D- academics. With 14 prestige, they can't do much better anyway.

Coach Ratings
Todd obviously enters Norfolk St. as a rookie coach, so he's limited to 150 points he can spread. His potential is elite (425 overall points), because we all can be great if we believe! Anything is possible!

Offense: 1 Potential: 100
Defense: 1 Potential: 100
Scouting: 1 Potential: 25
Player Development: 47 Potential: 100
Recruiting: 100 Potential: 100

One skill that Todd does have is incredibly good looks, seeing as he comes from the family Thundercock. His father Chad broke the 20000 snuggles with women record that Wilt Chamberlain held for decades. Therefore, everyone is drawn to Todd and must perform for him.

Thus, impeccable recruiting of guys that reports say are good at shooting and nothing else since Todd is braindead and knows nothing about basketball.

Coaching Style
Well, none really...

On offense, Todd will click the 'Shoot 3' button and maybe click 'Stall' when leading near the end of games. No offensive sets, nothing. Just run up the court and shoot 3s for the ol' ball coach, boys.

Defense, Man to Man forever to Bill Raftery's delight with Full Court Press every possession. Chase them and get the ball back so we can shoot more 3s.

Norfolk State's practice sessions are 50% Man to Man defense and 50% Full Court Press. 3 point contests also run every day for fun.

Offensive pace is 100% speed. Run, shoot 3s, you get it. Defensive intensity is 100%. Full court 100%, stick like glue to everyone, get the ball back.

Bench depth is 100%. We're playing everyone. Even walkons if they can shoot well enough. We'll need them, and hopefully our opponents will need to go deep on their bench also.

Ambition, Academics, Discipline, Temper, Integrity... all Very Low. Norfolk St. is going to be a trashy, degenerate program.

Curious how this offensive strategy has been working! I've noticed that sometimes when you check the shoot 3's button, your offensive set is listed as none. Had the same thought as you with practice time, opting to increase defensive proficiency rather than work on offensive play. I've been fairly balanced in my practice plan, having the boys work on 5 Out so that we can get a higher volume of 3's. Perhaps your plan is better. Do you have an update for us?
