2/23: #9 ST Johns, 24-5, 9-5, tied for 2nd, is here. This is a much bigger game for them than it is for us. They won by 14 at their place. Our only 2 losses so far this season came back to back. We're a big favorite but they can play, and our bench is short inside. They are 3-4 vs. Top
25 teams. Let's hope the home crowd helps!

2/24: Early lead. Up 5 after 10. Down 5 at the half. They really want this game and they're playing hard. I'm trying to fire up my guys, but I understand that this game means nothing to us. We're shooting 29.4%, -17%. 5 TOs. Gotta wake them up! Down 11 with 10 left.

70-73. We caught them and even took a late lead but we couldn't hang on.

Savo fouled out and Witt played a lot of minutes with 4.

19, 4 for Brad, 13, 9 for Savo, 15 for Witt. Thom was outplayed badly. They were +7 from the line and some of the calls were pretty bad.

They shot 49.1% to 40.9%. We took 13 more shots but it wasn't enough. -9 for the bench.

2/27: At 16-12, 7-8 Villanova. Again, this is a big game for them and a meaningless game for us, and we have big injury issues. We won by 20 at our place. We score 11 more, give up 2 fewer, and we're +7 on the board.

2/28: We take a quick lead. Up 24-12 after 10. 42-31 at the half; we led by 19 then fell asleep. 13 for Thom. We're shooting better and hitting threes. Up 12 with 10 to play.

78-61. It's nice to end the regular season with a W!

27-8 for Thom, 16, 3 for Brad. +10 RBs.

Miri will be back for the post season but Kili won't be back unless we deep into the NCAAs.

3/5: We end the regular season at 28-3, 12-3, #1, NET #1. We win the Big East by 2 over 2 teams.

Earl Thom is #10 on the Norton list which means he will very likely be a 2nd team All American for the 2nd year in a row.

No one declares for the draft.

+16.4 PPG, #7 in points, #2 in Def. Rating, #1 in NET Rating. +7.2 RBs, #6 in RBs. -6.8 TOs, +4.2 assists, +4.3 steals.

11-3 vs. Quadrant 1 teams, undefeated vs. the rest.

Thom leads us with 15.6 PPG. Brad is 2nd with 12.8. 8 players get 6.9 or more. Savo and Suli get 7.3 RBs each, and Miri gets 6.0. Cole gets 5.8 assists.

"Hey Mack, got a second?"

"Sure Ali. What's up?"

"It won't be announced until after our season ends but I'll be going to Cal-Berkeley on May 1."

"Congratulations!"

"Thanks. Did you decide to keep coaching or to look for an A. D. job?"

"I would like nothing better than to be the next A. D. here."

"I'll do what I can. My assistant is only a year or two away from retirement so I don't see him as a realistic candidate. You should get the job."

"Great! Let's hope!"

3/9: 3 upsets in the play in round. We play #9 seed Villanova, 17-13, 7-9, who we just beat by 17 without our #1 big guy off the bench. Their starting SF got hurt in that game and he's out.

3/10: We take the lead early. Up 8 after 10. Up 10 at halftime. 12 for Thom, 10 for Suli. 4 TOs to 16 for them. They're shooting better but we've taken 12 more shots. +12 in the paint. Up 24 with 10 left.

87-54. A blowout. 28, 3, 3 for Thom, 18, 11, 3, 3 for Suli,14, 8 for Brad. Miri looked rusty but he got better late in the game.

+13 RBs, 8 TOs to 27, +14 in the paint, +14 on 2nd chances.

"It's always special to play in Madison Square Garden."

"I'm so glad I'm here!"

We brought along a nanny because it would be too loud for Russell to be at the games, but Jess is excited to be here for them.

3/11: #4 seed, #14 ranked Georgetown, 24-9, in the semis. We beat each other on the road. The issue is inside play so we're really glad to have Miri back. If we control them inside we win. If not, we're in trouble. They score 6 fewer than us and give up 2 1/2 more.

Creighton shocked #3 seed ST Johns.

Game time: We score the first 12. 22-3 after 10! 37-21 at the half. We're not shooting well but our D is fantastic, 24.1% shooting for them, 0-6 on threes. 10 for Brad, 8 for Thom. Up 24 with 10 to go; we're cruising!

78-41. Incredible D! They shot 26.3% for the game, 1-13 from beyond the arc! +14 RBs, +16 in the paint, +12 on 2nd chances.

21, 8, 3, 4 blocks for Brad, 13, 7 for Thom. +12 for the bench.

This is about as good as a team can play!

3/12: #6 seed, #23 ranked Creighton beat both the #3 and then the #2 seeds to get to the title game. They're 22-10, 8-8. We won by 16 at their place in our only meeting. They have two bigs banged up but both will play. All 5 of their starters average between 10.2 and 11.5, so they can be tough to defend. They're 5-2 against Top 25 teams. We should have an edge inside and we need to take advantage of it. They're hot right now.

Game time: It's close early; they look good. Up 6 after 10. Up 10 at the half, but Savo has 3 fouls, as does their SF. 10 for Brad, +10 for our bench. They're overplaying Thom. We're shooting well but we need to do more inside. We take charge, up 22 with 10 to play.

82-54. We had a terrific Big East tourney!

14, 9 for Miri, 15, 0, 2 with 4 steals for Witt, so our bench was excellent. 13 each for Thom and Brad. +10 RB, 8 fewer TOs.

#1 overall, #1 East. That didn't turn out so well last season. Hopefully better this year.

We play #16 seed Radford, 19-14.

"I'm really excited!"

"Me too, Jess. It would be really nice to go out with a national title."

3/16: Up 7 after 10. 53-30 at the half. 19 for Thom, 12 for Brad, 11 for Miri. Up 20 with 10 left.

87-60. Men against boys.

Will Witt hurt his calf. He'll miss our next game.29, 7 for Thom, 17, 5 for Brad, 15, 6 for Miri. +16 RBs.

3/17: In an incredible coincidence (or not, the tourney officials probably planned it) in the 2nd round we play the team that knocked us out in the 2nd round last year, Miami (FL), #9 seed, 22-10. My guys are almost too psyched...

3/18: It's close early. Tied after 10; what is it with that team! Down 3 at the half. My guys have a lost look on their faces. Thom picked up 3 fouls, which really hurts us and his man has 17 to his 7. 12 for Brad. +14 in the paint. They're shooting 55.6% to our 36.4%.

"Win or go home, guys. You gotta play D!"

Up 4 with 10 left; it's anybody's game! We go on a mini-run.

88-77, but it took a long time! 20, 5, 4 for Brad, 20, 3 for Thom. +14 in the paint.

"That was too close."

"Yes it was, Jess!"

3/20: We're home for a couple of days and the Board of trustees interviewed me in secret for the A. D. job. They were clear in not wanting me to quit coaching but I told them I was done as soon as the season ends. I said I'd find an A. D. job somewhere and I hoped it would be here. They said that an A. D. does a lot of travelling. I answered that yes, that's true but it's usually only a day here, a day there, and i can deal with that. They didn't make a decision, at least while I was in the room...

Oh, our 2nd child is due in October. Even more reason to change jobs. I'll take a $15,000 a year pay cut, but that's fine.

3/22: We play #4 seed, #14 ranked, Belmont, 30-6. How TF does a team like Belmont win 30 games! The new transfer rule, no doubt. Anyway, we think we're better at every position. BUT... they're 3-1 vs. ranked teams including wins at #1 and #3! I'm telling my guys to take this one seriously!

3/23: We start slow. Up only 1 after 10; they can play. Up 7 at the half. Their SG has 3 fouls, as does his back up. Witt has 10 points. We're out shooting them 40.6% to 33.3% but the other stats are close.

"You know what you need to do!"

Up 10 with 10 left; they're hanging in.

81-60 and we're in the Elite Eight for the first time in program history!

17, 4 for Witt, 11, 10, 4 for Miri, so the bench was excellent yet again, 39-20. 16, 6 for Brad, 13, 3 for Thom.

+12 RBs. We held them to 28.8% shooting.

3/24: #11 seed Michigan, 20-14, is next. They beat #2 seed Cal to get here after beating #14 and #6. We're a big favorite but they're hot. They need to hope that the threes are falling. They're 3-8 vs. ranked teams.

Weirdly, 3 #11 seeds are in the Elite Eight!

Will Kili is back so we're at full strength.

3/25: It's a shootout early. Tied after 10. 51-53 at the half. They're shooting 52.9%, 4-9 on threes. 14 for Brad, 13 for Thom. Their bench is beating ours, we're -12. +6 RBs.

"You need to play D and I need more from the bench! You know what's at stake here!"

Up 14 with 10 left after a mini-run. Then we take charge.

107-90. What a shoot out! We're in the Final Four!

28, 3 for Thom, 20 for Brad, 12, 2, 10 for Cole. 3 others score 10 or more. 10 fewer TOs, +14 in the paint. We need to play much better D if we're going to keep playing.

3/29: Met with the Board again.

"Coach Lowe, since we can't convince you to keep coaching we're offering you the Athletic Director position as of May 1 when Ali leaves. We'd like to announce it on April 4, when Ali announces she's leaving."

Jess and I are ecstatic!

3/31: #1 seed, #3 ranked, #7 NET Illinois, 33-5, in the National Semifinal. They're favored by a half point. They're 7-3 vs. Top 25 teams.

Their two best players are their PG and their PF. We score 1.2 more, give up 4.1 less. We get 5.9 more RBs, and we turn it over almost exactly the same amount of times. Our bench could be the difference.

4/1: We start slow. Down 4 after 10. Tied at 34 at halftime. Their Sf has 3 fouls. Thom has 10, Kili has 9. No one else on wither team has more than 6. Benches each have 16. +5 RBs, but 4 more TOs. Neither team is shooting well.

"How bad do you want it? It's up for grabs!"

Uh oh. They take a lead. Down 5 with 10 to play. OT!

88-85 in OT and we're headed for the title game! Cole made 4 late free throws. They had the last possession with 3.8 seconds left but we played terrific D and they could only throw up a prayer.

17, 6 for Thom, 17, 3, 1, 3 steals, 3 blocks for Brad. 16, 3 for Kili, 14, 7 for Witt. +7 RBs, +10 on 2nd chances. We shot better but they took 9 more shots.

HELL of a game!
