Way Back When

2/5: We win our next 4 games.

We trounced ST. Joseph here, 68-36. It is unusual to hold a team to 36 points! Art Post led the offense with 14, 3, 4.

We then went to Davidson, winning 85-71 ion their court. Weal led the way with 18, 11, 3, and Art Post had 18, 3, 7. The bench contributed 30 points. Sean Rich, who has been a wonderful Point Guard, had 9 assists. +12 rebounds and only 9 turnovers.

Our scouting assistant, Josh Galt, told us that Davidson was weak in responding to quick passes so we worked on moving the ball quickly, especially inside to outside and vice versa. It worked extremely well.

We held another team to 36, UAB, winning by the lopsided score of 83-36 at home. 11 players scored for us, no one getting more than 12. +18 rebounds.

Finally, we defeated Akron 72-42 on our home court. Our starting guards were outstanding, 20, 6, 4 for Post, 17, 5, 4 for Rich. Josh Galt wrote that their guards were not good defenders and we were able to exploit that weakness. Only 10 turnovers and 15 more rebounds than they managed.

All of our committed recruits easily surpassed our minimum SAT score requirement.

At the halfway point in conference play we stand at 14-5, 7-1, tied for 1st with Toledo, 1 up on Davidson. Our NET is #16.

3 of our next 4 are away with the home game against rival Toledo.

2/19: We win our next 4.

We won impressively at Oklahoma ST, 73-50, exhibiting our usual robust defense. Grun led us with 13 and 10, and both Weal and Malo had 15. +30 inside.

When Toledo arrived in Smithfield they were tied with us for 1sty. They left as the 2nd place team when we defeated them 93-67. Our guards were splendid, 20, 5, 7, 3 for Post, 16, 4, 5 for Rich. 30 for the bench. Only 10 turnovers.

It was a struggle at Temple before we prevailed by a score of 82-74. We won this one inside led by John Weal's 21, 7, 3. Sam Turn had 13 and 5 from the bench. +19 on the boards and +22 in the paint. But a season high 22 turnovers. About which I was not pleased. Jon Hart and I will work on that in practice.

Finally, we defeated a scrappy Pitt team 70-57 on their court. #3 guard Ric Arch had 19 and 4. +23 RBs, +20 in the paint, but another poor night handling the ball, 19 turnovers. Jon Hart and I are strategizing!

We stand at 18-5, 11-1, 2 game lead over Toledo with 4 to play. We have enter the rankings at #25 with a net rating of 12.

Emma continues to work on her culinary skills.

“I shall be able to feed you decently but you may have to put up with breads and desserts that are variable in quality.”

“You will learn in time, Emma. I believe it is a matter of practice. I am not concerned.”

“Working as a seamstress for the past several years has honed those skills. I a, quite confident regarding sewing, and perhaps even producing some of your clothing.”

“I make a very good salary, Emma. It won't be necessary for you to-”

“Jacob, a penny saved is a penny earned. As our family grows it will be wise to be economical in these areas.”

“As you wish, Emma.”

“We should begin looking for a house in earnest., Jacob.”

“Given the uncertainty of my profession I wonder if that is the case.”

“A home is an important investment and provides security.”

“Yes, I certainly agree. But if I were to take another job in the Spring, or next year or the year after, we would need to dispose of the house.”

'Are you planning to move?”

“We've discussed this. I am ambitious. I hope to move up the ladder to a better school, and then a still better one, and so forth, until I am coaching at an elite school.”

“So I am to be a vagabond?”

“Hardly that, Emma. Many men move from city to city occasionally in order to move to better positions in their chosen profession.”

“Yes, we have discussed that. I was hoping we could stay in the Smithfield area for at least a year or two.”

“When opportunity knocks I will need to answer. The right opportunity is rarely repeated.”

“I suppose that is true.”

One of the better new songs is, “My Gal Sal.” “They call her frivolous Sal, A peculiar sort of a gal.” It goes on like that. I have not yet learned all of the lyrics. The tune is very catchy. And simply everyone is singing “School Days (When We Were a Couple of Kids).”

Fortunately, Emma likes music as much as I do.

“Emma, our children should all play musical instruments.”

“That would be nice, Jacob.”

3/5: We end the regular season 3-1 in our last 4 games.

89-53 over Southern Methodist here. 14, 12, 4 for Weal, 16, 2, 3 for Rich, 14, 6, 6, 3 for Post. +40 in the paint, only 7 turnovers.

We then defeated Belmont here by a nearly identical score, 87-59. 18, 8, 3 with 5 blocks for Grun. All 5 starters had 10 or more and we received very good production from the bench. +32 in the paint.

We next won at Vanderbilt, 81-56. 17, 11, 4 for Grun, 17, 2, 6 for Rich, 15, 5, 5 for Post. Their SF had 26 but it did not matter. +25 rebounds.

We ended the season with a loss at LSU, 61-72. The game didn't matter as we had long since clinched first place, but I do not like to lose. Kurt Grun had 20 and 11 but our offense was not productive as we shot only 32.4%, 2-24 on threes. Not a good night.

We end the regular season at 21-6, 14-2, #20, NET #12. We finished only 1 game ahead of Toledo, 5 or more ahead of everyone else.

We were +17.8 PPG, +9.0 RBs, -6.2 turnovers, 7.3 assists.

We had no standout scorers, Art Post led us with 12.7.Kurt Grun led with 7.4 rebounds. Rich had 5.4 assists and Post 5.2.

Emma seems to be growing more nervous regarding plans for the wedding in June.

“Emma, why is this making you so nervous?”

“Jacob, her wedding day is the biggest, most important day of a woman's life. Everything must go perfectly.”

I suppose men simply do not understand these things.

I was served tea at a diner the other day. It was served in something called a “tea bag,” a new invention. The bag rests in the hot water and one moves it up and down to release the tea. While no tea leaves found their way into the drink, the tea was weak.

3/7: We begin the post season against #9 seed Pitt, 12-17, 7-9, in the quarter finals of the Conference F tournament. We defeated Pitt by 13 in their gym. This is a team we should easily defeat.

3/8: We take an early lead but they are staying with us. Up 1 after 10. Then we go on a very long run and lead by 20. 51-27 at the half. 12 for Weal, 11 for Turn. +16 RBs, 3 turnovers, +32 inside. We're winning very easily in the 2nd half.

85-73 but it really was not that close. 12, 16, 5 for Grun, 15, 7 for Turn. +26 in the paint, +17 RBs, 9 turnovers.

3/9: We meet #5 seed Oklahoma ST, 17-12, 9-7, in the semifinals. We think we're much better. We won by 23 there.

Game time: We have a slight lead in a slow paced 1st half. Then it goes back and forth. We trail 24-28 at halftime. We are shooting 32.3% to their 50%. We need to wake up! We cannot seem to get going. Finally, we take a lead midway through the half. Then we extend it to double figures.

67-48. I worried that we would never get going! 16, 6 for Grun, 11, 8 for Turn, 10, 7, 3, 5 for Weal. +20 in the paint, 11 turnovers.

The “Merry Widow Waltz” is very popular but operatic and classical music is all the rage these days.

3/10: As expected we play #2 seed Toledo, 21-8, 13-3, in the title game. We beat them by 26 at home. They score 4 fewer and give up 10 more.

Game time: Back and forth early, a real battle. Up 1 after 10. Then a run puts us up by a dozen. 42-25 at the half. 17 for PG Sean Rich. 5 turnovers. We keep a 15-20 point lead through most of the 2nd half, then put them away.

78-55 and the title! 24, 4, 5, 3 for Rich, 13, 12 for Grun, 12, 5 for Turn, who is a real spark off the bench. 11 turnovers to 23.

Kurt Grun is tournament Most Outstanding player. He, Rich, and Turn make the all star team.

3/11: We're hoping for a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament.

3/12: #4 South. A little disappointing. Tough bracket. We play Kansas ST, #13 seed, 19-11. They have trouble scoring.

We feel as if, assuming we play our game and keep our focus, we can get to at least the round of 16, perhaps farther. Of course in the post season one never knows.

3/17: Up 2 after 10. A late run puts us up 33-24 at the half. We hold them to 27.6% shooting. 10, 4 for Post. An early run gets the lead to 20.

70-46. Our defense was excellent. 18, 8, 5, 3 for Grun, 17, 7, 3 for Post. +20 in the paint.

Wedding plans are, if anything, escalating. There are evenings when I'm home when I just want to walk out of Emma's house and come home. I'm not sure I'd be missed. I'm away right now, of course, and it is just as well. Do not mistake me. I love Emma. But I will be very happy when all of this is over, we are married, and we are beginning our life together.

3/18: We play #5 seed, #20 ranked Creighton, 24-9 in the 2nd round. They can hit the outside shot but we have a decided edge inside.

They are 1-4 vs. ranked teams. We play much better defense and rebound much better. Still, they're ranked #20 for a reason.

3/19: Back and forth. Tied after 10. A late run puts us ahead 41-30 at halftime. 12 for Weal, 9 for Malo, 7 for Rich. Up 15 with 10 to play.

82-74. Theirs was a valiant effort but we held on. 26, 5, 2, 4 for Weal, 10, 8, 8 for Rich. +14 in the paint and 9 fewer turnovers.

3/20: We face an enormous challenge in the round of 16, #1 seed, #3 ranked, #3 NET Duke, 28-5. However, in their last game they lost not one, but 2 players with terrible injuries. Their starting SG broke his ankle in the first half, and their starting Center tore his ACL in the 2nd half. They're very deep but this is a huge blow to them. They are still a big favorite. We want a high scoring game, they want a low scoring game.

3/24: They take an early lead. Down 3 after 10. Back and forth. 33-29 at the half. 9 players have scored for us. We're shooting 57.1% to 22.9%. +12 in the paint. But -8 from the line.

“You're doing great, boys. Keep playing hard!”

Defensive battle early in the 2nd. Up 4 with 10 to go. Our D is holding! Up 10 with 5 to play. Tied with 2 left.

71-68! They missed a three late, got the offensive rebound, took and missed another 3 at the horn. We were 6-6 from the line late. Our guards won it, 14, 2, 6 for post, 13, 3 for Rich. We shot 50.9% to34.2%.

They made a strong comeback late but we held on, barely.

3/25: Our first ever trip to the round of 8 finds us facing #2 seed, #7 ranked, #11 NET Kansas, 25-9. They're 7-3 vs. ranked teams. On paper they're better both inside and outside. We'll need to play inspired basketball.

3/26: Very slow paced early on. They lead. Down 3 after 10. Back and forth late in the half. 37-33 after a very hard fought 1st half. Both Grun and Weal have
3 fouls, which is NOT good. As it did last game our defense is serving us well. They are shooting only 23.5% to our 50%. -8 from the foul line.

“20 minutes left boys. Don't let up!”

They take a small lead early and grow it. We come back. Up 2 with 10 to play. Down 6 with 5 to go.

70-74. We gave it our all. I am very proud of my boys! 15, 6 for Malo, 15, 3, 3 for Post. Fouls really hurt us badly, Grun played only 13 minutes and Weal only 21. Great season!

Lang Robi, an important sub, went down with a concussion early in the 2nd half.

3/28: “So will we be moving?”

“It is a distinct possibility.”

“Where?”

“There is no way to know.”

“Why is it necessary for you to move, Jacob?”

“That's the business I'm in. To move ahead I need to go where a good job takes me. We can achieve financial security that way and I advance in my profession.”

“And that is important to you?”

“Very. I wouldn't be in this business if I didn't want to advance.”

“When will you know?”

“In about two weeks I will know if we are moving this year. If we do I would probably go to the new school by April 10 or 12, perhaps the 15th, come back for the wedding, and then take you with me to the new school.”

“And where will we live?”

“If here, we can purchase a home.”

“If elsewhere I'll purchase a home. Before doing so I would have you take the train out to be certain you approved of the new home.”

“And then, in a few years, we move again?”

“Quite possibly.”

“How many times?”

“Perhaps a total of two or three.”

“I see.”
