Way Back When

11/18: Uh oh. We fall behind right away. Then we come back. Down only 1 after 10. We finish strong and it's 44-35 at the half. 12 for our C, Cal Will. This one is far from over. Up 14 with 10 to go.

80-68! Our best player, Will Qual, was little help, fouling out in 20 minutes. The other starters all contributed. 23, 2, 7 for SG Mal Finn, 19, 8 for Will, 12, 6, 5 for Topp. We beat a really good team fairly easily, once we got going.

#5 seed Rutgers, 2-0, in the semifinals. We're favored but all 5 of their starters get 10 or more and their SG gets 21.5.

11/19: We take the lead early on. Up 12 after 10. 32-22 at the half; our D has been really solid, they're shooting 20%. Good bench play. But C Cal Will has 3 fouls. We go on an early run and break it open. Up 18 with 10 to play.

79-56, an easy win. 16, 9 for Qual, 14, 9 for Topp. +12 in the paint.

Ranked! #22. We play #2 seed Mississippi, 2-1, for the title. We think we're much better inside and as good outside. If we play well we should do fine.

11/20: Close early. Up 9 after 10. 40-23 at the half. 13 for Flin, 11 for Qual. +18 inside. We take off early and put it away.

88-61 and the tourney title. 25 for Flin, 18, 10 for Topp. +20 RBs, +22 in the paint.

It's always good to win a title!

We're ranked #22!

12/8: Ranked #14, 9-0. We're not playing great teams but we are beating decent, even good teams on the road, as well as at home, and beating them easily.

+13.9 RBs is a huge factor in our success, and we're outscoring opponents by 27.3 per game! Taking good care of the ball and forcing turnovers.

We have 4 players scoring between 16.7 and 13.2 so we're hard to guard.

Travel, mostly by rail, continues to be an adventure. The food is generally pretty good, with generous portions.

Sleeping is not so great. There are constant bumps, small and large, the train sometimes sways from side to side, and the whistle blows at most intersections. I never feel well rested when we sleep on the train.

But we do that more often than not because it is cheaper than a hotel or inn. Oh well. Nothing to be done.

Sometimes when it's a short trip we go by bus. That's just plain awful. The seats are too close together and the roads are terrible. I usually wind up with a backache. Fortunately, we don't go by bus too often.

1/29: 19-0, 6-0, tied for 1st in Conf. G with VA Commonwealth; we play them away in a couple of weeks. Ranked #15. None of the Conf. games have been close so far.

Senior C/F Glen Topp is playing very well lately, and Qual continues to play well.

We're #1 in Overall NET and Offensive NET.

The “Red Scare” continues with a few thousand people who have committed no crime being incarcerated. This is outrageous!

2/15: 24-0, 11-0, 2 game lead in the Conf. Ranked #9. I don't see us losing until we get to the big dance unless we have an off night against a hot team, but you never know.

We had our first close game of the season, a 67-63 win over VA Commonwealth. We didn't shoot well, particularly threes, and we had 19 TOs. We won it inside.

In January Prohibition began. I predict that it will be a huge failure. I don't drink very much at all but lots of people do, and they will find ways to get alcohol.

The U. S. Senate votes against joining the League of nations, as expected. This will most likely kill the League.

3/4: We end the rgular season undefeated, 29-0, 16-0, 3 up on 2nd place VA Commonwealth, 6 up on 3rd place. Ranked #8.

Little used guard Jay Mahn pulled a hamstring and missed two games.

Marq Qual led us with 16.9 and 8.1. As a team we had a very impressive regular season: +25.4 PPG, +12.9 RBs, +8.6 Assists, minus 7.3 TOs. #1 in Overall NET.

On to the postseason!

3/7: Playing 8th place Temple in the wuarters.

We jump out to a big early lead. +18 after 10. 44-13 at halftime. We own the paint. This is a rout in the 2nd half. The bench will be in early!

85-49. 19, 14 for Qual. 12, 7, 6 for SG Mal Flin. +17 RBs, +16 in the paint. 9 TOs to 20.

It's #4 seed North Texas, 16-13, 10-6, in the semifinals. We won by 14 there. On paper this should not be close.

3/8: Close early. Then a run. Up 9 after 10 minutes. 47-27 at the half. 15, 4 for Flin.

As with our last game this has turned into a rout.

80-51. 20 each for Qual and Flin. 16, 6, 3 for Topp. Solid play both inside and outside.

#10 seed Middle Tennessee, 17-13, 7-9. ran a string of upsets to reach the title game. We won by 24 at our place and should have no trouble with them.

3/9: Up 8 after 10. They're battling! 47-39 at the half. We're facing a determined opponent! 12 and 11 for Qual is the difference. Both of our starting guards are in foul trouble. I let the guys know that they'd better come to play in the 2nd half!

We blast out of the gate to start the 2nd and open up a big lead.

89-72. 26 and 12 for tourney MOP Marq Qual. 15 and 8 for Topp. +14 RBs, +22 in the paint, +14 on 2nd chance points.

On to the big dance. Can we hope for a #2 seed? We're ranked #7, NET #9, but given we're only in Conf. G probably a #3. Hopefully not a #4 but could be.
