Way Back When

12/23: Close early. They're tough inside. Up 1 after 10. 27-36 at the half. We need to shoot better and do better inside. Up 2 with 10 to go.

77-78. Close all the way. They won it at the line but us shooting 12-23 on free throws cost us the game.

1/8/1925: We end pre-conference play at 9-2. Unranked but #22 NET.

5 ranked opponents on the Conf. B schedule. We play #1 UCLA twice.

1/22: 2-2 to start conf. play. We lost to #1 on the road and #11 at home. Conf. B may be one conf. too high. We'll see.

2/5: 3-1 in our last 4. We're now 14-5, 5-3. We lost to #7 but beat #14 and #19.

Our top 7 scorers average between 12.6 and 6.7.

Still 13.8 TIOs. The other team gets 17.8 but still way too high for us.

Only 2 of our final 8 are against ranked teams but 5 of those 8 are away.

2/19: Rough stretch, 2-2. We're 16-7, 7-5, in a 4 way tie for 6th place.

Turnovers remain a problem and we're not rebounding all that well, only +3.7.

The competition is definitely stiff in Conf. B!

3/5: We go 1-3 to end the regular season at 17-10, 8-8.

#9 seed in the Conf. B tourney. We've probably climbed to one conference too high.

We play #8 seed Xavier, 17-12, 8-8. They beat us badly, by 26, there.

+5.1 PPG, +3.4 RBs, -4 TOs, but 14.1.

3/9: We take an early lead but they come back. Up 1 after 10. 41-43 at the half. Both Rily and Hend have 3 fouls, and fouls are the difference. The three blind mice are calling more on us. 13 for Holt. It's close in the early going of the 2nd half. Up 3 with 10 left. They go on a mini-run. We come back.

84-85. Big mistake. One of our guys shot a two instead of a three at the end (This shouldn't happen. I had Shoot 3s checked.).

15, 5, 8 for Holt. We lost it at the line, 13-17 to their 24-33.

#37 NET so we should get to the big dance.

3/12: We're in. #9 South. We play #8 Iowa, 18-13. They beat us by 6 at our place in Nov.

3/17: We jump out to an early lead and get it to 15. 33-20 at halftime. Balanced scoring, good bench play, no one in foul trouble. +16 in the paint. They start strong and get close.

We're fighting back. Up 5 with 10 to go.

60-52. 12, 6, 4 blocks for Rily, 15, 4 for Hend. +24 in the paint.

Great win.

It's #1 seed West VA, 28-5, in the 2nd round. This is a tough match up for us but if we play our best I think we have a shot. They have an All American at the Point.

3/19: They take a quick lead. Down 6 after 10. 25-44 at the half and we're in big trouble! We're shooting only 35.7%, mostly due to their tight D. Their guards are killing us. Down 19 with 10 to play and it looks like the season ends here. Their guards are just too much for ours.

54-80. We were in over our heads.

We lose starters Houl and Holt.

Is this the time to go to a new school? I'm thinking I want to give it at least one more season but we'll see.

3/21: Tennessee Gov. Austin Peay outlaws the teaching of evolution.

4/3: #8 Duke wins it all.

4/4: Awards: We get shut out, which is not a surprise.

4/9: Very tempted to move to Oregon or Iowa but I'm staying.

4/10: The Great Gatsby is published.

4/23: I ask for money again.

No again.

Tough season, 18-12, 8-8, early exits in the post season. But we'll give it one more season to see if we can move up to Conf. A.

Overall, I'm 678-114, .856.

5/1: #28 recruiting class. We remain in Conf. B.

5/5: Scopes Monkey trial.

5/29: We lose 3, a C and 2 guards. All of them would have played significant minutes. Not good!

6/5: We get a good looking PF.

6/6: Chrysler Corp. is founded.

6/9: We decide to go to recruiting to fill the other 2 spots.

6/26: We need 2 and 1 either way.

7/21: John Scopes is found guilty and fined $100.

8/21:We offer to a PF, a PG, and an SG. The PF is a real long shot.

9/18: We get the PG, #154, and we lose one.

Going to the Las Vegas Winter Jam.

9/25: We lose another one.

10/2: We get an SG, #124. Lose a big. Going with a guard.

Practice starts today.

10/16: The Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series.

11/13: Here's the lineup:

Junior Jaan Wats moves from SG to PG this season.

Frosh B. J. Venn is at SG. He looks very good.

#3 guard is junior Rob Crow, whos can play. #4 is red shirt frosh Adam Welk whose D needs work. Last guard is soph Julke Turr who won;t get much PT.

Frosh Jay Cage is at SF and he has looked really good.

Junior Aaron Rily moves from C to PF this season. He's very good.

Senior Dom Hend moves from PF to C.

1st big off the bench is soph Mark Geer, who started at Nebraska last season. He can play. #2 is soph Brad Will, who is adequate. Last is red shirt frosh Lad Schu, who will only get significant minutes if we have injuries.

11/27: 3-1 start. We lost at ODU on a night when the shots didn't fall and we got nothing from the bench.

11/28: First broadcast of Grand Ole Opry.

12/16: 3 wins put us at 6-1 going to the Las Vegas Jam. We're the #3 seed. We play #6 Western KY, 3-4 this evening.

Close early then we go on a run. Up 6 after 10. 41-31 at halftime. 14 for SG B. J. Venn. Up 14 with 10 to play.

79-61. We were never threatened. 26, 3, 6 for Venn, 16, 9 for Forward Jay Cage.

Unfortunately, Venn hurt his hip and will play only limited minutes for the rest of the tourney. Rob Crow will start.

#2 seed Utah ST, 5-2, in the semifinals.
