Way Back When

3/24: We're hanging with them early. Up 3 after 10. 39-34 at the half. We're playing really well. The only thing keeping it close is they've been to the line 12 times to our 5 and we only hit 2-5, which is terrible. No one on either team has more than 2 fouls and we have not yet maxed out our D. They've turned it over 13 times. They take the lead quickly then go on a big run. Damn! Down 16 with 10 left.

71-94. Excellent 1st half, terrible 2nd half (32-60!).

We're only losing one guy, starting C Dom Hend. Given our decent recruiting class we may be better next year.

4/3: #2 Michigan ST is the champ.

4/4: Awards: B. J. Venn is Conf. B Frosh OY and 2nd team.

4/9: Not planning to go anywhere. Some exceptionally good teams want me. Staying here to see how we do in Conf. A.

4/23: I ask for money yet again. Wow! We get $50,000!

24-10, 10-6, #16, NET #9. Overall, I'm 702-124, .850, after 25 seasons.

5/1: #80 recruiting class. They're better than that.

5/18: Evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson disappears while in California.

5/29: We lose a forward and a guard.. Down to only 4 so we'll need to grab two.

6/5: We get 2 bigs. At least one of them will start.

6/23: First SAT tests.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We want 2 and 2.

7/26: National Bar Association incorporates.

8/7: Jay Cage is #39 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, 2 Cs.

9/18: We get the 2 PGs, #108 and 115, and a C, #130, We lose the other C, offer to another one.

Going to the Palmetto Shootout.

9/25: We get the C, #89. He was our #1. And we're finished with recruiting assuming everyone hits our SAT score.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

10/10: Cardinals win the World Series in 7 games.

11/13: Here's the lineup:

Senior Jay Wats is back at the point. He is solid.

Soph B. J. Venn is back at SG and he is equally solid.

#3 guard is frosh Lin Jonn, who has looked good. Next is Rob Crow, who drops a spot in the rotation this year. Last guard is junior Jule Turr, who is decent.

Soph Jay Cage is back at SF. He may be our best player.

Senior Aaron Rily is back at PF.

Soph Tom Maye started at Texas Tech last season. He looks good.

Senior Jam Wood started for the last 3 seasons at Seton Hall. He could move up in the rotation. #2 big from the bench is junior Mark Geer, who is decent. Finally it's junior Brad Will, who is too good to be this far down the rotation.

11/15: National Broadcasting Company (NBC) begins operation.

11/25: 3-0 start. Later today we play #6 seed Washington, 3-0, in the first round of the Palmetto Shootout. we're #3.

We're ranked #24.

Quick lead. Up 12 after 10. 44-24 at the half. 12, 3, 4 for Cage, 12 for Maye. Up 26 with 10 to go.

75-53. It was never a game. 18, 4, 5, 4 for Cage, 17, 6 for Maye. Only 6 TOs.

PG Jaan Wats hurt his shoulder and will see limited PT.

#2 seed Cincinnati, 2-2, in the semis. All the favorites advanced. We beat Cincy by 21 in the season opener.

11/26: Wew score the first 13. This is quickly turning into a blowout. 40-16 at the half. We played a near perfect 1st half except for Maye picking up 3 fouls. Geer has 10 points filling in for him. Up 22 with 10 left.

69-53 but it wasn't that close. 21, 7 for Cage. An easy win.

It's #1 seed Iowa, 4-1, in the title game. We think we're better.

11/27: Up 4 after 10. A late run and it's 58-39 at halftime. 10, 7, 3 for Cage, 14, 3 for Venn, 10, 3 for Maye. Up only 8 with 10 to go.

91-85. They took the lead twice late. 15, 8, 4, 4 for tourney MOP Jay Cage. 22, 3, 6 for Venn, 15, 4, 5 for Wats.

12/4: 2 more easy wins get us to 8-0. #11, NET #6.

SG B. J. Venn leads us in scoring with 16.5 PPG. C Tom Maye gets 16.3 and 6.1 RBs. Jay Cage gets 14.5 and 7.4 to lead us in RBs.

+15.5 PPG, +1.0 RBs, not good enough but we're working on it. +6.4 Assists. -8.9 TOs, and a terrific 10.1!

1/22: 2-2 to start Conf. A play. Wats missed the games we lost. Then Venn got hurt but it was minor and he played through it.

15-2, #14, NET #3. Cage now leads us in scoring with 15.0, and is 2nd in RBs. Maye is second with 14.5. Venn gets 14.1. Roily leads in RBs with 6.9.

We still need to rebound better, only +0.4.

It has been a cold winter and the boys are complaining that their dorm rooms are very cold. We're getting them extra blankets. That's all we can do.

2/5: 1-3 in our last 4 puts us at 3-5. Tough competition at this level! The 3 losses were all to ranked teams on the road.

Rebounding remains a big problem.

2/19: 3-1 in our last 4 puts us at 19-6, 6-6. #15, NET #6. In a 3 way tie for 8th with 4 to play.

Getting out rebounded by 0.1.

3/5: 1-3 in our last 4. We finish 20-9, 7-9. I have 2 rebounders coming in as frosh. We'll need them!

We finish in a 2 way tie for 10th.

+4.9 PPG, -1.2 RBs, -4.6 TOs.

Maye led us in scoring with 15.2. 13.4 for Venn, 13.1 for Cage.

3/8: We play #7 seed, #14 ranked Wisconsin, 21-8, 9-7. They beat us by 8 there.

3/9: Both teams start slow. Up 4 after 10 in a low scoring game. 20-26 at the half. We're shooting 20.8% to their 25.7%; pathetic. They're beating us inside and outside but we're still in it. We go on an early run. They come back. Up 1 with 10 to play.

59-56. They missed an open three at the buzzer. 20, 11, 3 for Maye, 17, 11 for Cage, 11, 5, 3 for Venn. It was a battle!

#2 seed, #6 ranked Duke, 19-8, 11-5, in the quarter finals. We didn't play them in the regular season. On paper we're in big trouble.

3/10: They score the first 9. Down 10 after 10. 35-41 at the half. Their SF is killing us with 17. He's the difference. Down 4 with 10 left.

56-71. We stayed close until late, then they went on a big run at the end. We shut the SF down in the 2nd but they found the open man.

3/12: 20-10, 7-9, #17, NET #8. Not sure how high they'll put us.

#5 East. We play #12 Princeton, 21-8. I'd love to get to the Sweet 16. Given our season that would be sweet indeed! Could happen!
