Seattle @ Wichita State

Postby xjackson8925 » Sun Dec 25, 2022 7:13 pm

Seattle U 75 @ Wichita State 95

Seattle U: FGs 28-59 (47.5%), 3pt 10-22 (45.5%), FTs 9-17 (52.9%), TOs 18, Reb 22
Wichita State: FGS 39-64 (60.9%), 7-17 (41.2%), FTs 10-14 (71.4%), TOs 14, Reb 33

Game Thoughts: Expectations might have to change for this team after starting 0-4. The season is not over, they have lost to 4 teams that will be in postseason tournaments, but they have work to do if they want to qualify for one themselves. This was not a bad offensive performance by any means, the offense shot the ball well from deep, but Wichita State did whatever they wanted on offense. The Shockers are a solid group but are not offensive juggernauts by any measurement. Again, it was the perimeter defense that really let the Redhawks down. SO PG Jayce Andrews had a career day with 23 points (9-15 from the field), 8 assists and 4 steals. Wings Cory Chatman and Itai Conradi could not miss either, pouring in 20 apiece on efficient shooting. Out of Wichita State's 95 points, only 20 were in the paint. Lineup changes will have to be made in order to solve this in some way.

On the other hand, the big men for Seattle had solid offensive outputs. Ballard and Crystal had 15 each on 6-11 and 5-8 shooting, respectively. Crystal was 3-5 from deep as his hot offensive start continued. Off the bench, SO C Hayden Krueger had his best game of the season with 13 points (6-9) and 3 steals. Forsythe was 3-6 from deep (11 points) and High Point transfer Louis Mott had 9 off the bench.

Going forward, we might explore moving Mott and Aygar into the starting lineup to replace Crispin and Forsythe. Forsythe has been productive for a borderline top 500 freshman, but this team needs a shakeup in the backcourt. Another lineup combination that should see some action is PG Aygar SG Henderson SF Crystal PF Krueger C Ballard. This is a big and slower lineup but the offensive capabilities from this group are high. We would just have to see how they perform defensively. I still believe in this team but they need to start stringing some complimentary performances together.

Next game: @ Idaho State (0-4) 163 NET Seattle U (-8)
The Bengals are a major step down in competition for Seattle U and offer an opportunity to (hopefully) gain some confidence. However, Idaho State has a solid, experienced backcourt. Fred Owens (11.3 PPG) and Bryan McInnis (11.5 PPG) split point guard duties and are 4-year starters for the Bengals. There just is not much punch outside of those two offensively. Idaho State does employ a 2-3 zone at time, with those two at the top. The Redhawks should be able to force turnovers and in man-to-man be able to find success down low with Ballard, Krueger and co.

JAC Top 25 rankings

Postby xjackson8925 » Sun Dec 25, 2022 11:17 pm

1. Michigan State (6-0, WS Rank: 1) - My preseason #1 team is the undisputed #1 team. They have marquee wins over Texas (by 27) and Georgetown and just are just 7-8 deep with top-level scoring threats.
2. Connecticut (4-0, WS Rank: 8) - UConn has not shown many blemishes yet and boasts a 17-point win over Duke.
3. Florida (3-0, WS Rank: 18) - Florida has only played 3 games but is the only team to give Washington State any trouble
4. West Virginia (6-0, WS Rank: 2) - An impressive resume includes going 3-0 through a gauntlet of Seton Hall, Tennessee and Illinois. They are the Big 12 favorites right now.
5. Arkansas (4-0, WS Rank: 21) - Their best win is only a middling Oklahoma State team, but the Razorbacks have been dominant (over 80 PPG) so far.
6. North Carolina (5-0, WS Rank: 3) - No marquee wins but outside a tight game against Akron, the Tar Heels have won every game by 25+
7. UCLA (6-0, WS Rank: 4) - The Bruins beat solid Temple and Mississippi State squads en route to the Hawaii Classic MTE title.
8. Washington State (5-1, WS Rank: 13) - The Cougs lost a 10-point game @ Florida but won the 16-team HOF Classic beating Wichita State, Villanova, Saint Louis and East Tennessee State.
9. Seton Hall (4-1, WS Rank: 22) - One of the biggest surprises of the season, loss to West Virginia but boast wins at Notre Dame and Kansas.
10. Illinois (3-1, WS Rank: 19) - Only loss is a road one to West Virginia, offense has been prolific.
11. California (5-0, WS Rank: 20) - Elite offensive team, reigning WS Player of the Year Leiani Rivera has 20+ points in every game. Wins include Georgia Tech, Memphis and Oklahoma State.
12. Michigan (4-0, WS Rank: 14) - Not much competition but an average point differential of 21 Points
13. Purdue (5-0, WS Rank: 16) - Really solid defensive team; wins over Kentucky, South Carolina and us (Seattle U)
14. Kentucky (3-2, WS Rank: 11) - Two losses are to Purdue and Georgetown. Good wins over Stanford and Gonzaga, though.
15. Kansas (3-1, WS Rank: 10) - Home loss to Seton Hall. A lot to find out about this team.
16. Pennsylvania (6-1, WS Rank: 9) - Bad loss @ Georgia State but won Maui invitational right after with wins over Iowa State, Alabama and Southern Cal.
17. Syracuse (4-0, WS Rank: 15) - Have only allowed 52 PPG to start the season, best win is New Mexico State.
18. Penn State (6-0, WS Rank: 17) - Another surprising team, won a fairly weak WS Midwest Invitational field (DePaul, Colorado State, Missouri State). +120 point differential.
19. Texas (4-1, WS Rank: 7) - Got killed versus Michigan State but have handled everyone else (Dayton, Richmond, So. Illinois).
20. Xavier (2-1, WS Rank: UR) - Preseason top 8 team, lost @ Duke but beat a good VCU team by 20.
21. Texas A&M (1-0, WS Rank: UR) - Talented roster, only game is a win versus Pitt. Wait and see with them.
22. Georgetown (4-2, WS Rank: 6) - Losses to Michigan State and Maryland but wins against Kentucky and Louisville.
23. Saint Marys (3-0, WS Rank: UR) - Untested but have been a very efficient unit on both sides of the ball.
24. Georgia (3-0, WS Rank: UR) - Looked good against a very solid Dixie State squad.
25. Kansas State (3-0, WS Rank: UR) - Have not had any trouble dismantling lesser opponents so far.

Teams I don't have ranked:
WS #5 Gonzaga (4-1) - Their only top 150 team they played was Kentucky and they lost by 24. Way overranked.
WS #12 Temple (5-1) - Close to being ranked, wins over Iowa and Dayton are OK. Can't dock them too much for loss @ UCLA. Regardless, 12 is too high.
WS #23 East Tennessee State (3-2) - Cannot rank a two loss team when their only wins are Oklahoma and Murray State. Resume building opportunities versus St. Johns and Florida coming up.
WS #24 Creighton (4-1) - Have not beat anyone and lost versus a pretty average Arizona State team. Were ranked high preseason but no reason to rank them right now.
WS #25 Auburn (4-0) - Elite defensive team (45 PPG given up, #2 behind Houston) but have not played anyone.

Ranked teams by conference:
SEC: 6 (WS: 4)
Big 10: 5 (WS: 5)
Big East: 4 (WS: 4)
Big 12: 3 (WS: 3)
Pac 12: 3 (WS: 2)
ACC: 2 (WS: 2)

Re: Seattle @ Idaho State

Postby xjackson8925 » Mon Dec 26, 2022 9:29 pm

Seattle U 73 Idaho State 58

Seattle: FGs 29-61 (47.5%), 3pt 11-27 (40.7%), FTs 4-5 (80%), TOs 12, Reb 31
Idaho State: FGs 23-57 (40.4%), 3pt 8-20 (40%), FTs 4-4 (100%), TOs 17, Reb 30

Game Thoughts: It was not pretty at times, but the Redhawks were able to pull out their first win of the 2023-24 season on the road in Pocatello, Idaho. The Bengals starting out strong, riding some hot shooting from PG Fred Owens. Near the end of the first half, some turnovers were forced by new starting PG Omar Aygar and three-pointers hit by Army transfer F Antuan Henderson which allowed Seattle U to pull ahead and not look back for the remainder of the game. Idaho State shot their way out of the 2-3 zone the Redhawks opened up in, prompting Seattle U to switch to man-to-man which proved to be much more effective. Idaho State stayed in its zone the whole game which gave Seattle trouble from time to time but Mott and Henderson were able to connect on enough deep ones.

Fred Owens was unconscious for Idaho State, going 6-8 from deep, and his 18 points were enough to keep the Bengals within striking distance all day. 4-year starting G and usually reliable Bryan McInnis was held in check, only logging 4 points in 28 minutes played. Sophomore forwards Shawn Candelaria and Gannon Roberts played admirably, posting 9-7 and 10-8 lines, respectively. The 6'6 Coastal Carolina transfer, Roberts, worked the offensive glass especially well - taking advantage of some soft box outs from Henderson and Crystal.

On Seattle's side, this was a team effort. Henderson led the charge with 14 points (4-7 from deep) and Ballard followed him up with 13 and 8 boards. Aygar and Mott joined the starting lineup for this game and both gave good contributions. Aygar struggled from deep (2-9) but still posted 10 points, 7 assists and 4 steals with only 1 turnover. Aygar is not the most efficient scorer but gives the team a spark on both ends of the floor with his instinctive defense and sharp playmaking acumen. Mott went 3-7 from deep and turned in an 11 point outing, he needs to cut down on the turnovers (5) but his 6'5 frame has great offensive upside as a scoring 2 guard. The team leader in PPG, Lane Crystal, was quiet (7-4 on 3-5 from the field) but registered 3 blocks. Off the bench, Hayden Krueger saw increased minutes and responded with a solid 9-4 line (4-6 from the field). Krueger fouls at a high rate but his versatile offensive game is hard to keep off the court. 6'8 SO F Chezley Ivory got some minutes at the 3/4 in this game for the first time this season after an up-and-down freshman campaign. Ivory is essentially a non-factor on offense but provides good defensive minutes and is a good complement to Krueger off the bench - I expect him to get more PT in the future. Overall, this was the best effort of the season even given the level of competition. Hopefully, the defensive focus and intensity can keep up going forward.

Next game: vs Arizona State (4-2) 188 NET Line: Seattle -3.5
The Sun Devils, now coached by Tim Jankovich, have had an okay start to the season with wins over Virginia Tech and Creighton but losses to North Carolina and Niagara. SO SG K'wann Adams, Northern Iowa transfer, is having a breakout year for ASU leading them in PPG (13.3), APG (3.2), RPG (7.3), SPG (3.2) and BPG (2.0). The Pac-12 POTY candidate is their offensive and especially defensive engine. Outside of Adams, the majority of their offense comes from SR F Shyrone Kennedy (12.3 PPG) and FR G Cam Bruce (12.2 PPG). Without a true PG, Bruce is the de facto ball handler the majority of the time. He shoots the ball very well (46% from 3 so far on almost 5 shots a game) but also averages 4.7 turnovers per game. The key in this game will be the turnover battle, ASU forces a lot but is also not careful. If Seattle can slow the game down on offense and get the ball inside, they will have a solid chance.

Seattle @ Arizona State

Postby xjackson8925 » Wed Dec 28, 2022 6:36 pm

Seattle U 64 @ Arizona State 51

Seattle: FGs 20-47 (42.6%), 3pt 6-16 (37.5%), FTs 18-23 (78.3%), TOs 11, Reb 30
Arizona State: FGs 15-51 (29.4%), 3pt 5-19 (26.3%), FTs 16-23 (69.6%), TOs 16, Reb 38

Game thoughts: For the second straight game, Seattle U's defense shined and it led to a road victory. The first half was a bloodbath, with ASU winning it 22-19. However, Seattle U came out firing in the second half outscoring the Sun Devils 45-29 and pulling away for a decisive win. The well balanced offensive attack had 4 players scoring in double digits; Ballard (14), Mott (13), Aygar (10) and Krueger with 11 off the bench. Krueger had to play a lot of minutes because Ballard got in early foul trouble, only playing 7 minutes in the first half. Lane Crystal only had 4 points but led the team in rebounds (7) and assists (4). In addition to his 13 points, Mott had 4 steals and 2 blocks, helping him take home player of the game honors. The offense was really bogged down in the first half but came alive in the second. The defense, on the other hand, was there all night.

There was not much to speak of on the ASU side. Seattle did a fairly good job keeping K'Wann Adams in check (10 points 8 Rebs) and the only other player that had more than 6 points was Shyrone Kennedy with 11. Highlighted in the last post was how carelessly lead guard Cam Bruce takes care of the ball. He had 7 turnovers and was a big reason why their offense could never put together any sustained success. One positive stat for the Sun Devils was there +8 Reb advantage, bolstered by 12 offensive rebounds (F Oliver Betts had 4 by himself).

Next game: vs Appalachian State (0-5) NET: 346 Line: Seattle -9.5
This is an Appalachian State team that is 0-5 and has given up an average of 79.2 PPG (344th in the nation) to a schedule of Jacksonville State, South Dakota State, Harvard, Arizona and Missouri State. The only competitive game in that stretch was Jacksonville State. Their defense is truly awful and their offense is only ranked around 250th. The only player that could give you any trouble if 6'6 scoring wing Ron Heard who is averaging 12 PPG on 47% 3pt shooting. Their 5 man Isaac Davis is averaging 9.4-6.8 on an efficient 54% clip but their guards really pack no offensive punch. I definitely expect Seattle to cover this spread as they have been playing stifling defense and on the other side, should be able to take advantage of a Mountaineer defense that oozes points.

Appalachian State @ Seattle U

Postby xjackson8925 » Tue Jan 03, 2023 7:19 pm

App State 43 Seattle U 77

App State: FGs 15-47 (31.9%), 3pt 6-19 (31.6%), FTs 7-13 (53.8%), TOs 15, Reb 21
Seattle: FGs 27-54 (50%), 3pt 6-20 (30%), FTs 17-19 (89.5%), TOs 9, Reb 36

The Redhawks did not play down to their competition in this game as they came out and handled the Mountaineers in every aspect of the game. Ryan Ballard posted a season-high 20 points on 8-9 shooting. Off the bench, Forsythe and Krueger posted 11 and 10 points respectively. Omar Aygar only had 6 points but his impact was felt elsewhere with 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks.

Next up, Seattle will head to Ohio to face the 3-2 Bobcats (95 in the NET). Ohio is not a great offensive team but are stout defensively, especially inside. Their starting lineup is all players 6'6 and up, but they sacrifice shooting for height (28% team average from deep). Their 4 Ryan Woolfolk and 5 Stephan Henderson are both very efficient interior scorers and get after it defensively. Seattle is 8 point favorite but this is not the slam dunk game that the last few mid-majors were.
