Round 2

South Region

#4 Virginia Cavaliers (2019) vs #5 Memphis Tigers (2008)

Virginia starters: PG Ty Jerome; SG Braxton Key; SF De’Andre Hunter; PF Mamadi Diakite; C Jay Huff
Memphis starters: PG Derrick Rose; SG Antonio Anderson; SF Chris Douglas-Roberts; PF Robert Dozier; C Joey Dorsey

Memphis took a 9-2 lead but Virginia bounced back to go ahead 13-11 with 13-1/2 minutes left in the half. The Tigers scored the next 7 points and stayed ahead throughout the rest of the half which ended with Memphis leading 30-26. Defense predominated but Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter scored 14 and Memphis’ Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 10 in the first half.

The Tigers stubbornly held onto a 3-9 point lead until they went on a run that ballooned the margin to 15 points with 5 minutes remaining. Virginia was unable to reduce their deficit to less that 11 and Memphis came away with a 72-59 win. The biggest difference was that Virginia made 11 more turnovers than Memphis.

For Memphis, Robert Dozier had 17 points and 7 rebounds, Chris Douglas-Roberts finished with 13 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals, and Derrick Rose added 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. The Cavaliers’ ledger was led by De’Andre Hunter’s 24 points with Jay Huff contributing 9 points, 9 boards, and 3 steals, and Kyle Guy scored 10.

“Our defense was solid. So while our offense wasn’t tip-top, that made it possible for us to get by a very stubborn Cavaliers’ team,” said Memphis coach John Calipari.

Round 2

West Region

#3 Michigan State Spartans (2000) vs #6 Loyola Marymount Lions (1990)

Michigan State starters: PG Charlie Bell; SG Jason Richardson; SF Morris Peterson; PF Aloysius Anagonye; C Andre Hutson
Loyola Marymount starters: PG Terrell Lowery; SG Jeff Fryer; SF Bo Kimble; PF Chris Scott; C Hank Gathers

Led by Hank Gathers and Terrell Lowery, Loyola Marymount got good scoring from throughout their lineup. Over the first 14 minutes of the game, the Lions were hitting over 80% of their FGA’s. They cooled a bit but still finished the half by knocking down 66% of their shots from the field. The entire starting 5 of the Lions picked up 2 or 3 fouls apiece in the first half and the team was assessed with a total of 17 fouls, though. That put the Spartans on the line 27 times and they dropped in 21 of their FTA’s. The result was a 53-46 lead by the Lions. Hank Gathers scored 21 points and Terrell Lowery scored 13 for the Lions. For the Spartans Morris Peterson hit for 14 points and Aloysius Anagonye had 12 points.

Loyola Marymount continued to scorch the nets in the 2nd half (61% for the entire game) and ran away from the Spartans who could only convert 39% of their shots from the field. Michigan State scored 34 points at the foul line (on 44 free throw shots). The final score was Loyola Marymount-102, Michigan State-73.

Hank Gathers had a second big game in this tourney, scoring 31 points plus getting 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Bo Kimble dropped in 16 points plus had 7 boards in just 21 minutes on the court for the Lions. Terrell Lowery finished with 13 points, 10 assists, and 3 steals, Chris Knight scored 11 points, and John O’Connell added 10 points. Michigan State’s Jason Richardson had 17 points and 4 assists, Morris Peterson dropped in 16 points plus pulled down 7 boards, and Aloysius Anagonye had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said, “Loyola Marymount took us to school. They not only were hitting shots from all over but made it real difficult for us to get free shots. Getting beat like that is hard to take but the Lions are a darned good team and Hank Gathers is a beast.”

Round 2

West Region

#4 Louisville Cardinals (2013) vs #5 Illinois Fighting Illini (2005)

Louisville starters: PG Peyton Siva; SG Russ Smith; SF Wayne Blackshear; PF Chane Behanan; C Gorgui Dieng
Illinois starters: PG Deron Williams; SG Luther Head; SF Roger Powell; PF Jack Ingram; C James Augustine

While there were just 5 lead changes in the first half, the game was close the entire 20 minutes. The half ended with Illinois holding a slim 38-36 lead. Top scorers were Deron Williams for Illinois who scored 10 points and Russ Smith for Louisville who hit for 12 points.

The score remained razor close during the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half. The Cardinals then scored 10 unanswered points but Illinois grounded down that lead and the game remained close until Louisville shut down Illinois’ offense in the final 5 minutes. Louisville drew away for a 85-71 victory. Illinois shot slightly better but the Cardinals got to the foul line 25 more times and scored 18 more points on free throws.

The Cardinals offense was led by Russ Smith who had 23 points and 4 assists. Gorgui Dieng scored 19 and picked off 16 rebounds. Chane Behanan finished with 19 points and 9 boards and Wayne Blackshear had 8 points plus 8 rebounds. Luther Head scored 14 points for Illinois with Deron Williams scoring 12 and dishing out 5 assists, Jack Ingram getting 10 points, 6 boards, and 4 blocks, and James Augustine scoring 8 and grabbing 7 rebounds.

“This was a really tough game. Illinois played great and we were just fortunate to have a couple good runs in the 2nd half or the two teams would probably still be out there playing through a series of overtimes,” said coach Rick Pitino of Louisville. “Gorgui, Russ and Chane really led the way for us tonight.”
