Louisville starters: PG Peyton Siva; SG Russ Smith; SF Wayne Blackshear; PF Chane Behanan; C Gorgui Dieng
Wichita State starters: PG Fred VanVleet; SG Tekele Cotton; SF Ron Baker; PF Shaquille Morris; C Darius Carter

No more than 2 points separated the two teams during the first 6 minutes of play. Over the next 4 minutes Louisville then repeatedly opened a 4-6 point lead only to be reeled back in by Wichita State. The Cardinals’ defense then shut down the Shockers and with 6 minutes to go Louisville moved out to a 35-19 advantage. Things didn’t improve for Wichita State and they trailed 42-23 at halftime due to hitting just 29% of their shots and being -8 in rebounding. The Cardinals Russ Smith hit for 13 points while the Shockers Ron Baker scored 10.

Louisville’s defensive pressure was unrelenting and allowed to take a 57-32 lead with 12 minutes left in the game and 66-36 with 8-1/2 minutes to go. The Shockers shooting continued to be under 30% until the final 2 minutes of the game. Louisville trimmed Wichita State 74-52. ROUND 1 RESULTS

West Region

#5 Illinois Fighting Illini (2005) vs #12 Gonzaga Bulldogs (2017)

Illinois Starters: PG Deron Williams; SG Luther Head; SF Roger Powell; PF Jack Ingram; C James Augustine.
Gonzaga Starters: PG Nigel Williams-Goss; SG Josh Perkins; SF Jeremy Jones; PF Johnathan Williams; C Zach Collins.

Illinois jumped out to an early double-digit lead due to some good second-chance scoring plus a series of turovers by Gonzaga and fouls sending Zags’ starters Collins and Perkins to the bench early. Good shooting by Gonzaga got them within 2 points with 7 minutes until halftime. But fouls continued sending Illinois players to the foul line and turnovers didn’t cease for the Zags. That allowed Illinois to carve out a 44-30 lead at the break with the Fighting Illini scoring 10 more points that the Bulldogs at the free throw stripe. Illinois C James Augustine scored 15 points and grabbed 7 boards in the half.

Illinois’ lead grew to 20 points with 12 minutes to play. Gonzaga made repeated efforts to catch up but was continually hampered by a continuance of fouls and turnovers. Illinois triumphed by a final score of 78-67.

Luther Head scored 25 points to lead the Fighting Illini offensively. He was ably supported by James Augustine’s 19 points, 15 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 8 (yes 8) blocks. For Gonzaga Zach Collins had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Nigel Williams-Goss and Przemek Karnowski both scored 10 points with Williams-Goss also having 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Gonzaga coach Mark Few said, “It was unfortunate that Zach Collins and Josh Perkins only got to play 20 minutes apiece due to foul trouble. But you have to control the ball to win games and we didn’t do that. You also have to give a lot of credit to some very strong D by the Fighting Illini. 14 blocks and 13 steals is pretty darned impressive.”

Kansas State Starters: PG Steve Henson; SG Carlos Diggins; SF Mitch Richmond: PF Charles Bledsoe; C Fred McCoy.

The Lions hit an amazing 80% of their shots in the first 13 minutes of the game and had scored 50 points by that point. When the half ended Kansas State had scored 49 points which normally would mean they had a decent lead…but the Lions had poured in 67 points in the half. Gathers hit 13 of 15 shots from the field and scored 28 points in the first half.

Loyola-Marymount hit the century mark with 8:18 remaining in the game and Gathers had scored 48 of those points. The Lions decimated the Wildcats 114-82. Loyola-Marymount hit 65% of their shots, were +11 on the boards, and had just 7 turnovers compared to 18 by Kansas State.

#7 Arkansas Razorbacks (1994) vs #10 Oregon Ducks (2016)

Arkansas Starters: PG Corey Beck; SG Clint McDaniel; SF Scotty Thurman; PF Corliss Williamson; C Darnell Robinson.
Oregon Starters: PG Casey Benson; SG Tyler Dorsey; SF Dillon Brooks; PF Jordan Bell; C Chris Boucher.

The teams pounded away at each other with 9 lead changes in the first 11 minutes of play. Arkansas then exerted some dominance by hitting a high percentage of their shots and with 7 minutes to go in the half were up by 8. They held onto a solid lead but Oregon got to within 4 at halftime at 47-43. Dillon Brooks scored 14 points for the Ducks and Scotty Thurman had 13 for the Razorbacks.

While the Ducks continually made efforts to wrest the lead from Arkansas in the 2nd half, the Razorbacks thwarted each and every effort and maintained a 3-11 point lead the entire 20 minutes. Arkansas scored 10 more points than Oregon at the foul line and outshot the Ducks 62% to 52% which was enough for the Razorbacks to prevail 96-88.

Corliss Williamson topped Arkansas scoring with 18 points plus he had 5 boards and 3 assist. Scotty Thurman and Chris McDaniel both scored 17 points with Thurman also recording 6 rebounds for the Razorbacks. Dwight Stewart added 12 points off the bench and Corey Beck has 11 points and 7 assists. Oregon’s Dillon Brooks scored 27 points and Chris Boucher had 22 points and 12 rebounds with Tyler Dorsey scoring 16 points and Casey Benson finishing with 9 points, 7 assists and 2 steals.

Coach Nolan Richardson of Arkansas said, “Oregon is a great team and challenged us the entire game. Our guys were really hitting their shots today, though, and in the 2nd half just wouldn’t give in to the Ducks’ continuous pressure.”

ROUND 1 RESULTS

West Region

#8 UCLA Bruins (2008) vs #9 Washington Huskies (2005)

UCLA Starters: PG Darren Collinson, SG Russell Westbrook; SF James Keefe; PF Lorenzo Mata-Real; C Kevin Love.
Washington Starters: PG Will Conroy; SG Tre Simmons; SF Brandon Roy; PF Jamaal Williams; C Mike Jensen.

The Huskies took a 12-1 lead. UCLA finally hit their first field goal with 11:40 on the clock and then roared back to tie the game 2-1/2 minutes later at 14-14. The Huskies edged back on top and were ahead the rest of the half due to forcing the Bruins to turn the ball over 12 times. But UCLA hit a last second jumper for their first lead and a 29-28 halftime advantage. The defenses of both teams kept the shooting percentages very low.

UCLA held onto a small lead in the 2nd half and in the latter portions began to edge further ahead. This was mainly due to Washington not hitting a 3-point shot until there was 5-1/2 minutes remaining in the game. The Huskies had counted on scoring from the perimeter against the taller Bruins, but had missed all 14 of their attempts prior to that point. The Huskies fought to close the gap but were unable. UCLA escaped with a 72-65 victory.

Kevin Love and Darren Collinson both scored 18 points for UCLA with Love gathering in 13 rebounds to go along with 3 assists and 3 blocks and Collinson dishing out 7 assists. Lorenzo Mata-Real added 9 points and 10 boards for the Bruins. Jamaal Williams led the scoring for Washington with 14 points and he also had 6 rebounds. Will Conroy had 12 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals and Brandon Roy scored 8 and had 7 boards, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

“Even though the Bruins out-rebounded us 37-24 and we hit just 39% of our FG’s and 3 of 17 of our 3’s, we ended up outscoring UCLA from the field but they got to the line 15 more times and scored 9 more points there than we did. But give the Bruins credit, they held us off the entire 2nd half,” said UW coach Lorenzo Romar.
