GREAT TEAMS TOURNAMENT

GREAT TEAMS TOURNAMENT

Postby PointGuard » Wed Mar 15, 2023 4:22 pm

Using the DDSCB Tournament Maker and NCAAhoops Great Teams mod, I set up and am running a 64-team tournament.

Set up:
• No more than one great team from any single university
• Tried as best possible to place teams in their respective geographical regional brackets (East, South, Midwest, and west)
• Seedings were based on the teams’ prestige levels as established within the mod
• Let the DDSCB game sim each game with me watching and keeping minimal notes

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#1 Michigan Wolverines (1993) vs #16 Northwestern Wildcats (2017)

Michigan’s starters: PG Jalen Rose; SG Jimmy King; SF Ray Jackson; PF Juwan Howard; C Chris Webber
Northwestern’s starters: PG Bryant McIntosh; SG Scottie Lindsey; SF Vic Law; PF Gavin Skelly; C Derek Pardon

Neither team scored for first 3 minutes, then Jimmy King drilled a 3 for Michigan. Scotty Lindsey responded by sinking a 3 on Northwestern’s next possession. But with 10 minutes left in the half, it had been all defense with Northwestern ahead by just an 8-5 score. Michigan gained control in the latter stages of the half and led by Juwan Howard’s 7 points and 6 boards, the Wolverines were on top 30-23 at the break with the Wildcats’ shooting just 28% from the field.

The Wolverines went on a 12-2 run in the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half and looked like they had iced the game…and in fact they had. Their lead grew to as much as 22. Northwestern was able to cut into the lead to get to within 12 with 3 minutes to play but could get no closer. Michigan prevailed with relative ease 74-57 with Coach Steve Fisher relying on his starters who each played between 32 and 36 minutes. Michigan outshot Northwestern 54% to 30% and controlled the boards to the tune of 38-27.

Juwan Howard was the player of the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Michigan also got 12 points from Ray Jackson, 10 points, 12 boards, 2 steals and 3 blocks out of Chris Webber, and 8 points and 7 assists from Jalen Rose. Rose also held the Wildcats’ PG Bryant McIntosh (who averaged 14.8 ppg during the season) scoreless. Northwestern was led by Scotty Lindsey’s 17 points and Gavin Skelly’s 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said, “We played them tough for 10-12 minutes but then Michigan’s overall talent was just too much for us. The upset we’d hoped for just wasn’t in the cards since the Wolverines’ D was so great the entire 40 minutes.”

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#2 Oklahoma Sooners (1988) vs #15 Minnesota Gophers (2017)

Oklahoma’s starters: PG Ricky Grace; SG Mookie Blaylock; SF Andre Wiley; PF Harvey Grant; C Stacey King
Minnesota’s starters: PG Nate Mason; SG Dupree McBrayer; SF Amir Coffey; PF Jordan Murphy; C Reggie Lynch

The score was close very early in the game, but after about 5 minutes of play the Sooners took a lead and then steadily increased the lead throughout the first half. When the teams went to the locker room, Oklahoma led 54-30. Not surprising when the Sooners hit a phenomenal 78% of their FG’s while the Gophers could only manage to sink 32% of their FGA’s. Oklahoma also grabbed twice as many rebounds as did Minnesota. SG Mookie Blaylock led Oklahoma’s onslaught in the half with 13 points and 6 assists and 4 steals. SF Amir Coffey scored 11 for Minnesota.

Minnesota looked good early in the 2nd half. Continuing to be led by Amir Coffey, the Gophers cut the lead to 13 with 14 minutes remaining. But Oklahoma rekindled their offense and rapidly rebuilt their big lead, ending by ripping Minnesota 100-68. The Sooners held a 66% to 35% shooting advantage and dominated the boards 42-18. Oklahoma scored 40 points in the paint compared to 18 for Minnesota and held advantages in 2nd chance points (10-5), and fast break points (16-4).

Oklahoma’s C Stacey Grant had an awesome game with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 blocks, PF Harvey Grant also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards, SG Mookie Blaylock hit for 19 points plus had 8 assists and 4 steals, PG Ricky Grace scored 14, and reserves Terrence Mullins and Tony Martin both scored 10 points. For Minnesota, SF Amir Coffey poured in 23 points with PG Nate Mason scoring 12 and dishing out 10 assists.

Coach Billy Tubbs of Oklahoma said, “I’d be ecstatic if we could shoot that well every game as we did tonight. I guess it was infectious because everyone on our team was hot. Just wish I could bottle it.”

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#3 Kansas Jayhawks (2006) vs #14 Oklahoma State Cowboys (2012)

Kansas starters: PG Russell Robinson; SG Mario Chalmers; SF Brandon Rush; PF Darnell Jackson; C Cole Aldrich
Oklahoma State’s starters: PG Jawun Evans; SG Davon Dillard; SF Jeffrey Carroll; PF Leyton Hammonds; C Mitchell Solomon

Kansas quickly took a 10-1 lead. Then even though Oklahoma State’s SF Jeffrey Carroll scored 15 points, the Jayhawks took advantage of 11 turnovers by the Cowboys to fashion a 43-36 halftime lead. C Cole Aldrich topped the Jayhawks scoring with 11 points.

The Cowboys hung within 8-12 points throughout the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, but then slipped slowly into oblivion and ended up being flayed by Kansas by a final score of 84-61.

Kansas’ SF Brandon Rush was high point man with 23 points but C Cole Aldrich had 18 points and 9 rebounds and SG Mario Chalmers hit for 13 while reserve Darrell Arthur scored 10 and grabbed 6 boards in 13 minutes of playing time. Scoring in double figures for Oklahoma State were SF Jeffrey Carroll with 15 and PG Jawun Evans with 10.

Kansas’ Coach Bill Self said, “We got off to a good start and lead, then held off the Cowboys before finishing strong. Our guys played a good solid game.”

Next up: Indiana (1987) (30-4) vs iowa State (2017) (24-11)

Really cool, love the way you start with staring lineups. Feel like I'm reading about a real game. All of those #1 seeds look really tough. If they make it to Elite 8 those are going to be some tough games. Whoever wins this tournament will earn it.

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#4 Indiana Hoosiers (1987) vs #13 Iowa State Cyclones (2017)

Indiana Starters: PG Keith Smart; SG Rick Calloway; SF Steve Eyl; PF Magnus Pietkowski; C Dean Garrett
Iowa State Starters: PG Monte Morris; SG Nazareth Mitrou; SF Deonte Burton; PF Nick Weiler-Babb; C Darrell Bowie

Led by Darrell Bowie, Iowa State ran off to a 10-2 lead. But Indiana took their first lead at 16-15 with 11:19 remaining when Jeff Oliphant dropped in 2 free throws. The Cyclones hung tough though and after 5 more lead changes and 8 ties, the score was 43-42 in favor of Iowa State when the claxon sounded ending the first half. Indiana out-rebounded the Cyclones 19-14 but the Cyclones out-shot Indiana 53% to 43%. Bowie and Monte Morris both scored 9 points to lead Iowa State offensively and Keith Smart, Daryl Thomas and Brian Sloan each scored 8 for Indiana. Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said, “We’re fortunate to be ahead when 15 fouls were called against us and just 7 against our opponent allowing them to score 11 more points than us at the foul line. And three of our starters have 3 fouls each and the other two have 2 fouls apiece. Our bench got more time on the court than our starters!”

Similarly to the first half, the Cyclones held onto a 1-8 point lead for the first 8-1/2 minutes of the 2nd half. Then Indiana went ahead 61-60 when Dean Garrett stole a pass and flew down court for a driving slam on which he was fouled and converted the 3 point play. With Iowa State again being called for twice the number of fouls as Indiana, Coach Prohm was riding the refs but with restraint since he had been tagged with a technical in the first half. The Cyclones then went on a 16-5 run that gave them a 12 point lead with 7:15 on the clock. Indiana didn’t have an answer and fell to the underdog Cyclones by a final score of 85-75.

For Iowa State, starters Darrell Bowie and Monte Morris both scored 15 with Bowie pulling down 10 boards and Morris dishing out 7 assists. But reserves Matt Thomas and Donovan Jackson were big contributors with 20 and 10 points, respectively. Indiana was led by Keith Smart’s 20 points and Daryl Thomas’ 10 points.

(Note: Steve Alford was injured, so didn’t start and played just 8 minutes, scoring 5 points...had he started and played most of the game, do you think Indiana would have prevailed?)

#5 Wisconsin Badgers (2015) vs #12 Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (2017)

Wisconsin Starters: PG Traevon Jackson; SG Zak Showalter; SF Sam Dekker; PF Nigel Hayes; C Frank Kaminsky
Southern Mississippi Starters: PG Cortez Edwards; SG Quinton Campbell; SF D’Angelo Richardson; PF Eddie Davis; C Tim Rowe

The Badgers bit the Golden Eagles early and often enroute to a 45-22 halftime advantage. Wisconsin held a 57% to 27% shooting advantage and a 19-12 rebounding advantage. Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Southern Mississippi Quinton Campbell’s 7 points.

Southern Mississippi steadily cut into the lead in the 2nd half and got to within 10 points with 3 minutes remaining in the game. But Wisconsin then iced the game to record a convincing 82-65 victory.

The Badgers hit 60% of their FGA’s while holding the Golden Eagles to just 38% and also were +9 on the boards. C Frank Kaminsky had a big game with 17 points, 16 points, 4 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks. Nigel Hayes also scored 17 points and Wisconsin’s bench outscored the Golden Eagles bench 27-4.

Southern Mississippi had 4 players in double figures. Both Quinton Campbell and Tim Rowe had 15 points and 7 rebounds while Cortez Edwards scored 12 and Eddie Davis added 11.

“Our guys were relentless tonight,” said Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan. “And Frank (Kaminsky) was a beast out there.”

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#6 Ohio State Buckeyes (2012) vs #11 Butler Bulldogs (2010)

Ohio State starters: PG Aaron Craft; SG Lenzelle Smith, Jr; SF William Buford; PF Deshaun Thomas; C Jared Sullinger
Butler starters: PG Ronald Nored; SG Shelvin Mack; SF Garrett Butcher; PF Gordon Hayward; C Matt Howard.

Just a couple points separated the two teams during the first 7 minutes as the lead shifted back and forth. The Buckeyes then took advantage of turnovers as well as shooting just a little better than Butler to build as much as a 9 point lead throughout the middle portion of the half. But the Bulldogs kept cutting into the lead, and when the half ended, Ohio State’s lead was down to 39-36. The Buckeyes’ C Jared Sullinger poured in 18 points plus pulled down 6 rebounds. Butler was led by PF Gordon Hayward’s 11 points and 7 boards and SG Shelvin Mack’s 10 points.

Butler surprised everyone by scoring the first 9 points of the 2nd half. Just as it seemed they would bury Ohio State, the Buckeyes struck back and it became a game of give and take with respect to the lead. Sullinger carried Ohio State, but Butler’s more diverse offense offset that, especially when the Buckeyes’ shooting percentage declined. The Bulldogs opened a small but steady lead in the final 5 minutes that Ohio State was unable to overcome. The final score was: Butler—72, Ohio State—65.

Butler was led by PF Gordon Hayward with 20 points and 15 rebounds while SG Shelvin Mack had 17 points and PG Ronald Nored scored 13 and both guards had 6 assists apiece. C Jared Sullinger scored 34 points and had 11 rebounds, but the rest of the Buckeyes’ team hit just 30% of their FG attempts.

“At the half we accepted the fact that we just weren’t going to stop Sullinger and decided to focus on shutting down the rest of their team in the 2nd half. That allowed us to hold down the Buckeyes’ scoring just enough for our offense to get us past them,” said Bulldogs Coach Brad Stevens. “I have to admit I got worried when Gordon got tagged for his 4th personal foul because I knew we needed him out there on the court tonight. Fortunately he continued to play all out but also played smart to avoid picking up his 5th foul.”

ROUND 1 RESULTS

Midwest Region

#7 Cincinnati Bearcats (1993) vs #10 Marquette Golden Eagles (2003)

Cincinnati starters: PG Nick Van Exel; SG Tarrance Gibson; SF Terry Nelson; PF Erik Martin; C Corie Blount
Marquette starters: PG Travis Diener; SG Dwayne Wade; SF Todd Townsend; PF Scott Merritt; C Robert Jackson

Both teams had a tough time getting the ball in the hoop early. After 3 minutes of play the score was just 2-2. Marquette then began to score and built as much as a 13 point lead. Cincinnati was able to score the final 6 points in the first half to cut the margin to 30-23 at the break. The Golden Eagles, behind the scoring of Scott Merritt, Robert Jackson, and Travis Diener hit 50% of their shots compared to just 38% by Cincinnati. Nick Van Exel was the only member of the Bearcats to shoot well…he hit 4 of 5 from the field and scored 9 points.

Cincinnati used a succession of steals to cut the lead to 2 points after 6 minutes of play in the 2nd half. A free throw by Van Exel tied the game with 7:18 to play. Marquette crept back ahead but with 3:49 to go, Terry Nelson sunk two foul shots to put the Bearcats on top for the first time at 54-52. Cincinnati then scored the next 6 points to give them an 8 point lead. Marquette tried desperately to get back into the game, but the Bearcats offense which had finally woken up was just too hot and Cincinnati rolled to a 70-55 victory.

The Golden Eagles inability to control the ball in the 2nd half led to their downfall. They made 25 turnovers in the game compared to just 13 by the Bearcats.

Leading the scoring for Cincinnati was Nick Van Exel with 23 points (he also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals) and Corie Blount who had 16 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. For Marquette’s Travis Diener hit for 16 points, Robert Jackson had 12 points and 8 rebounds, Scott Merritt scored 11 points to go along with 6 boards, 4 steals and 2 blocks, and Dwayne Wade had 7 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, and 4 steals.

Cincinnati Coach Bob Huggins relied heavily on his starting 5 with each of them playing between 32 and 38 minutes. After the game, Huggins said, “Marquette gave us everything we could handle tonight. If it weren’t for us finally being able to put together our offense and defense in the final 4 minutes, we’d have been going home.”
