DDSCB 2023: The Greatest

5/1: Recruit class #51.

We exceed our expected to spend amount.

5/29: We lose a guard who wouldn’t have played much. Looking for the best player we can get.

We offer to a PF. NO.

6/2: Offer to an SF. No.

6/5: We offer to an SG. Got him.

6/25: We will go to Indy and all the regional camps.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We need 2 and 2.

7/11: We offer to 2 PGs, a Pf, and a C.

8/21: Learning about the school and my players, all of whom are on campus for part or most of the summer. Still chasing recruits.

9/11: We lose a C. I offer to a PF.

9/18: We lose 2, get one. We get a PF, #65. He was #1 on our list.

Going to the Alaskan Classic. Good schedule. The ACC is tough so only a few challenges before we get there.

9/25: We get 2, lose one. We get 2 PGs, #78, and #83. Looking for a big guy.

10/2: 1st day of practice. Lots of questions in the backcourt.

10/9: We lose another big. Offer to an SF.

10/16: The SF, #40, says yes but we’re not sure he’ll hit our SAT score. Hope he does, he can play!

11/13: Here’s the lineup:

The starting guard positions are completely up in the air.

Junior Doug Evan will start at PG. Senior Kel Prog will get equal time there; he’s a better passer but Evan is a better shooter and defender.

Junior Dan Fell, a transfer from Texas ST, starts at SG. Senior Will Doug gets equal time there.

Our 5th guard is frosh Paul Wood, who isn’t bad.

Senior Cab John is at SF. His D needs work.

Soph Ron Pepp is at PF. He looks good.

Junior Lou Kell is at C. He is probably our best player and is a 3 year starter.

1st big off the bench is senior Mara Bail, and he’s weak on D. 2nd is junior Heck Wilk, who may well move up. Finally, there’s frosh Tony Spal, who is not ready.

We start the season at home with UAB. I have no idea what to expect but I’m using the same plan I used at N.O.

11/14: Close early. A run puts us up 13 after 10. 53-45 at halftime. Balanced scoring. 2 starters have 3 fouls each, but the same is true for UAB.

Close early in the 2nd. A run puts us up 13 with 10 to go. We take control late.

93-69. 14, 6 for C Lou Kell, 13, 6, 1, 3 for sub guard Will Doug. 4 others with 11 or more. +24 inside.

I guess my system works anywhere!

The crowd was really behind us and it was a full house!

At 0-1 Oregon ST next.

11/17: Back and forth early. Up 1 after 10. 47-41 at the half. That’s the biggest lead by either team so far after 19 lead changes and 8 ties. 14 for Doug, 11, 6 for PF Ron Pepp. We look good inside.

Looking good early. Up 15 with 10 to play.

100-89. 21, 9 for Pepp, 18, 11 for Kell, good guard play. +30 down low.

Kent ST, 0-1, is here.

11/21: Quick lead. Up 17 after 10. 56-32 at the break. 19, 5, 3, 3 for Pepp, 18 for John. We own the paint.

Up 29 with 10 left, this is a blowout.

99-70. 28, 5 for John, 23, 6, 4, 3 for Pepp. +38 in the lane.

We’re 3-0 heading for the Alaskan Classic where we’re the #7 seed. We face BYU, 1-1, first.

We look over the lineup and after a long discussion we decide not to make any changes yet.

I give them a pep talk and make a couple of changes but this won’t be easy!

We gain some ground early. Down 9 with 10 to play.

93-106. We just didn’t play D, 64.9%. Pepp fouled out in 20 minutes with 20 and 4. 18, 4 for Kell, 16, 3, 3 for John, 14, 0, 4 for Evan.

4-2 Providence is here. Their C is out with a broken hand.

12/1: Close early. Down 1 after 10. 46-38 at the half. Balanced scoring. Kell has 3 fouls. Big edge inside.

Up 15 with 10 to play.

105-79. 20, 11, 3 blocks for Pepp, 15, 4 for John, 20, 5 for Wilk. +41 for the bench.

We’re 5-1. #1 in PPG. Pepp leads us in points and RBs. Prog leads in assists.

“Jam Jones, WBKB, Blacksburg, VA. I’m here with Coach Ally Cash, the magician who led New Orleans to a national title last season and who know has our Virginia Tech Hokies at 10-2, 3-0 in the
ACC. Coach, the Hokies won 9 games all of last season and you’ve already topped that with lots of gamnes left. How do you work this magic?”

“It’s not magic, Jam. It’s hard work, discipline, working within the system, putting team above self, and believing in yourself.”

“Well, it sure works. You’ve got some new guys on the team but just about all of the returnees are playing way better than they did last season. How do you do that?”

“See my previous answer. We got them to buy in. Another thing, Jm, is our system is very simple in a lot of ways. We only play one defense, man-to-man, and when we press that’s also man-to-man.

We run a completely free wheeling offense so there are no set plays to remember.”

“But there’s a down side to that. The players need to get open and the other players need to find them when they do get open.”

“That’s true, and we work on that a lot at practice.”

“What’s a typical practice look like, Coach?”

“We always spend a lot of time on D, and a lot of time on the offense, but aside from that it varies. We try to fix the things that went wrong in the last game, we prepare for the next team we’re
facing, we work on individual things- there’s no one standard practice.”

“Thanks Coach.”

At 8-5, 0-3 Florida State next.

1/6: Behind early. Tied after 10. 54-54 at halftime. Great bench play, 12 for Bail, 10 for Wilk. +26 down low.
