3/31: #1 seed, #1 ranked Duke, 31-5, in the national semifinal. They’re only 6-3 vs. ranked teams but they can play. This won’t be easy!

4/1: We fall behind early. Down 6 after 10.43-49 at the break. 15, 4 for Nate, 10, 4 for Harp but he has 3 fouls. We’re winning inside but losing outside. The difference is at the line where we’re down 8.

Down 5 with 10 left. Tied with 4 minutes to go.

100-102. They hit a 12 footer off a double screen at the buzzer. The difference was at the line. We were 5-12, they were 23-30.

4/3: #17 Kansas beats Duke for the title.

4/4: Awards: I am national and conf. COY. Marq Harp is conf. POY and 1st team along with Leon Nate.

4/9: Time to move on?

I’m visiting Ohio ST, Oregon, and Mississippi ST.

Going to Mississippi ST.

Starkville, MS isn’t all that far from New Orleans but it sure is different. Not a party town by any means. Still, MS ST offers me opportunities I could never have at New Orleans. Bigger budget is a huge factor. I took N. O. about as far as I could take them. I think I can take this team even farther, or move to an even better school to do that.

4/16: The assistants all stay and all of them are very good.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade.

Yes. C+ to B!

34-5, Final Four. For 4 years at N. O., 123-23, .842. Pretty good!

On to a new beginning!

“Bobby Joe Smith, WMIS. I’m here with new coach of MS ST Bulldogs, Allie Cash. Coach, high expectations after what you did at New Orleans.”

“I welcome that. We plan to do big things. I’m inheriting a really good team and I think we can be pretty darn good right from the start.”

“Another step on the road to being the all time greatest?”

“That’s the plan!”

5/1: Only #187 recruiting class.

We meet the expected to spend amount.

5/29: No one leaves so we have no open roster spots.

I’m getting established here in Starkville. Everyone has been great. I’m getting to know the players and my staff, as well as the Athletic Department people.

6/25: Going to the Indy Elite and all the regional camps.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We want 2 and 2.

Still in the deep South so it’s still HOT but I’ve lived down here all my life. Not sure I could take the cold weather up North.

“Ben Downs, WMST, MS ST’s very own radio station. Here with new coach Ally Cash. Coach, are you settling in?”

“Very nicely. Everyone has been terrific.”

“What are your expectations for the upcoming season?”

“3 top ten ranked teams in this conference so we’ll definitely need to be sharp. I don’t know my team all that well yet so it’s hard to know how good we can be but we’ll play hard.”

7/11: I offer to a PG, an SG, and 2 Cs. They all seem interested.

9/18: WOW! 4-4. 2 Cs, #44 and 53. An Sg, #61. A PG, #67.

Going to the Swish Invitational. Challenging schedule.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We looked good today. I think this will be a solid team but we’re in a very tough conference.

11/13: Here’s the lineup:

Junior Ray Walt is at the Point, at least for now.

Junior Hal Alan is at SG.

Senior Gene Bail is our #1 backup and he wants to start at the Point. We’ll see what happens.

Our other guard, junior Drew Cole, starts at SF in our 3 guard set.

Soph Mel Wimm is at PF. Good rebounder, good defender.

Soph Aron Ross is at C. He should be our best rebounder.

Soph Aki Turo is the first big man off the bench and he does lots of things well. Frosh Ryan Ware shows a lot of promise. Soph Dan Loft will play in blowouts and if we have injuries, and that’s even more true of frosh Cris Orvi.

We start the season with #24 ranked Marquette here.

11/14: Back and forth early. Up 6 after 10. 56-38 at halftime. 14, 4 for C Aron Ross. 11 for backup guard Gene Bail.

Up 39 with 10 to go. We look great!

115-68. 31, 5 for Ross, 17, 0, 4 for PG Ray Walt, 16, 3, 12 for Bail, 12, 5 for sub C/F Aki Turo, 13, 5 for sub C/F Ryan Ware. +24 for the bench, +52 in the paint.

“Bobby Joe Smith, WMIS, here with the post game show. Coach Cash, great start, you destroyed a top 25 team.”

“We played really well tonight. This was the kind of start I was hoping for.”

“How about Gene Bail. Everybody knows he wants to start.”

“If he keeps playing the way he did tonight that is likely to happen.”

“So how does it feel to be at Mississippi ST?”

“Everyone has been great. I really feel at home here. We came here to win games and we’re off to a good start.”

Little used F/C Cris Orvi hurt his knee. It’s not serious.

UCLA is here. This will be their season debut.

11/17: We start fast. Up 9 after 10. 58-44 at the half. 13 for SF Drew Cole, 12 for Turo. Ross has 3 fouls.

“First, you were up by 23 and you relaxed. Now it’s only 14. I expect you to play hard for 40 minutes. Second, we need to do better inside. Come on, you got this!”

Good start to the 2nd 1/2. Up 24 with 10 to play.

109-82. 22,3 for Turo, 19, 3, 4 for Cole. Very good guard play.

“Ben Downs, WMST, here with coach Ally Cash after an easy win over UCLA. Coach, were you happy with tonight’s performance?”

“Coaches are rarely happy. We see things that need to get fixed and that’s our focus. But I also saw a lot of good things. I’ve been very happy with our bench so far.”

“And on the down side?”

“We need to play better inside and Aron Ross can’t foul out like he did tonight.”

“How about that home crowd?”

“Love it! Full house and they were behind us all the way. I love these Mississippi ST fans!”

Memphis, 0-1, is here. They’re very good outside.

11/21: Close early. Then we go on a run. Up 20 after 10. 57-34 at the break. Balanced scoring. PF Mel Wimm has 3 fouls. We’re playing well inside. +14 for the bench.

Up 36 with 10 left. We’re looking sharp!

101-58. A real blowout! 22, 8 for Ross, 16, 5 for Cole, 14, 10 for Turo who is playing really well. 14 for Ware. Excellent inside play. Bail is averaging 11.7 assist. If he played better D he would start but
we’re not about to mess with a winning combination.

Off to the Swish Invitational. We’re the #2 seed and we face #7 seed Georgia Tech, 2-1. We’re 3-0 and unranked.
