(Hi all, I am new here, and in the coming days, I'll try to put together a fun dynasty report surrounding Baylor in College Football 2019. Please bear with me as I learn the ins and outs, and I hope you enjoy)



After experiencing unprecedented success of back-to-back 11-win seasons in 2013 and 2014, Baylor was rocked by a sexual assault scandal that affected so many in the Greater Waco area, and in the program overall. Coaches were fired, arrests were made, and it was a horrible situation all around.

But time must march on, and the program must continue.

The Bears won just 1 game in 2017, but rebounded excellently with 7 wins in 2018. Still, the administration was ready to make a look at how they could improve even quicker. After the recruiting class signed in February of 2019, the school announced Klaus_GSD as the new head coach.

With his arrival, Klaus is tasked and will be measured by several items. Most importantly, the board and the Athletic Director have made it clear that there needs to be a return to the high-explosive offense that was in place during the Briles years and they must begin to recruit Texas well. With all the in-state talent at their disposal, the Bears expect to get quality injected back into the program quickly.



Coach Klaus, however, was handed a very tough schedule including travelling to Wyoming in week one, and then hosting Tennessee and Florida State in consecutive weeks, respectively. There would not be much time to waste, as preparations would need to begin immediately. Will he be up to the task?

Quick Roster Synopsis

The current Baylor squad is heavily leaning towards the offensive side of the ball. The Bears have great depth at all the skill positions but need to strengthen the offensive line. Quarterback Ronald Wood is an excellent player and could be All-Big12 Caliber.

The defense needs work and it is an older bunch. Linebacker is loaded with senior talent, but after that, there isn't much less. Defense will be a huge priority in recruiting.

Top Recruiting Needs

1) Linebacker - Baylor needs a bare minimum of two, but could use three or four here.
2) Offensive Line - No real number needed, but quality in depth must be improved.
3) Cornerback - Only three returners at Corner for next season.
4) Running Back - Baylor will graduate three backs, but there is a lot of quality expected back for next season.
5) Defensive End - The Bears need to add one or two quality rush ends to the roster for next season.

WEEK ONE

Baylor @ Wyoming



Game Summary

Klaus and the Bears opened the 2018 season in Laramie against the Cowboys of Wyoming, a program that has produced NFL talent in recent years. With a new staff, a new season, and new schemes, it would be a tough challenge for this Baylor team to go on the road and play well.

Thankfully, they were up to the challenge.

Baylor's smashed any Wyoming attempt to keep them contained racking up 590 yards of total offense, 384 through the air and 206 on the ground. But it wasn't always as comfortable as the final box score made it look. Quarterback Ronald Wood opened the scoring with a one-yard run in the first quarter to give Baylor the 7-0 lead. But Wyoming scored on each of their next two drives without reply via 44 and 22-yard field goals to bring the score within one.

The Bears offense got back in gear and scored on their first possession of the second quarter with a one-yard run from Daniel Caudle, the backup tailback stretching the lead to 14-6. Wyoming came back on their next series with a field goal again, cutting the lead to 14-9. That was all Wyoming would get.

Baylor ripped off three straight scoring drives to end the half including an interception by Benjamin Marlowe which he returned for a touchdown. Orlando Wills hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass from Wood, and with three seconds left in the half, Corey Kelly added another 3 points from 27 yards out giving Baylor a 31-9 lead heading into the break.



The Bears added another touchdown early in the third quarter as Daniel Caudle ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run. Kevin Graves completed the scoring punching one in from one yard out giving the Bears a convincing 45-9 road win, and Klaus' first win at the helm.

FINAL SCORE: Baylor 45, Wyoming 9

It was over when: Orlando Wills hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass from Ronald Wood to make it 28-9 giving Baylor a comfortable lead.

Recruiting

Klaus' staff identified 30 targets they initially wanted to track. The major focus was on in-state recruits such as 4-star running back Antonio Caldwell, 4-star cornerbacks John Sparks and Matthew Mendoza, and 3-star linebackers Michael Bach and Timothy Lopez.

The new head coach has been rumored to be focusing more on the season results initially, while he begins to establish relationships in new areas with new high school coaches. Perhaps then, the results will do the talking for him.

WEEK TWO

Tennessee Volunteers @ Baylor Bears



Game Summary

Though it wouldn't have been Klaus' first choice, playing against an SEC East team at home in Week Two allowed for an opportunity to make a statement. Though Tennessee hasn't been among the elite the past several years, their name still carried clout.

Baylor jumped out to a big first-half lead scoring 17 unanswered points. Corey Kelly hit a long field goal from 51 yards to open the scoring late in the first quarter. Then backup tailback Daniel Caudle cashed in a touchdown from five yards out about 3 minutes later for a 10-point lead. Both teams stalled for the next 13 minutes or so. Finally, running back James Serrano got Baylor back on track with a four-yard touchdown run giving the Bears their 17-point halftime lead.

Whatever the Tennessee coaches and players talked about in the locker room, it worked. Tennessee opened the second half with a 43-yard field goal from Clifford Dias. And on the second play of the 4th quarter, Alan Pate hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass to bring the Vols to within 7. The tension in McLane Stadium was tangible. But Baylor put together a long, 10-play, 5-minute drive resulting in a 19-yard Kelly field goal to push the lead to 20-10. The Baylor defense stood tall on Tennessee's next possession forcing a punt. Caudle, again, scored from four yards out, his second rushing touchdown of the game.

FINAL SCORE: TENNESSEE 10, BAYLOR 27

It was over when: Daniel Caudle scored his second touchdown with 1:04 to go to make it 27-10.

Recruiting

Baylor quickly found out they were not ready for the big time with several 5-star prospects such as linebacker Benjamin Floyd and guard Paul Messina, who registered very little interest in the Bears' advances. But 4-stars like running back Antonio Caldwell, guard William Wright, receiver Pedro Griffin, guard Daniel Dickson, and corners John Sparks and Matthew Mendoza appear to be very much in play.

Initial linebacker recruiting has not gone as well, with Baylor turning to three-star linebackers Erik Hopkins and Michael Bach. The staff will continue to evaluate and find other potential diamonds in the rough at the position.

WEEK THREE

Game Summary

Last week's test against Tennessee was certainly worthy, but in Week Three, it was another step up. Despite being thrashed by Notre Dame 47-10, FSU still had a much better roster than Baylor and one of the nation's top quarterbacks in David Barbosa.

Early on, it looked like Florida State was going to take out their frustrations on Baylor for the week prior scoring 10 points in their first two drives including a 16-yard toss from Barbarosa. Finally, with about 5 minutes left in the first quarter, a Corey Kelly field goal from 38 yards got Baylor on the scoreboard for the first time. The second quarter was more of the same as the Seminoles added another 10 points and the Bears got just another three from another Kelly field goal. At the half, the visitors held a 20-6 lead. Were the Bears coming back down to earth?

Klaus' men came out of the locker room with bad intentions. Orlando Wills hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ronald Wood bringing the lead down to 7. Freshman fullback John Spaulding slammed across the goal line from one yard out to even things up at 20 with 9:08 left in the third quarter. All the sudden, it was a brand new game. 6 minutes later, Kelly added a third field goal, this one from 29 yards to give the hosts their first lead.

In the fourth quarter, tailback James Serrano found the end zone with a 2 yard run to make it 30-20. Just as it seemed FSU was about to go away, Barbosa found Rob Rush for a 74-yard touchdown pass with 8:17 left in the game. Daniel Caudle, however, put the final nail in the coffin with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:23 left, his 5th touchdown of the season. Kelly added his fourth field goal from 54 yards out, completing his 4-for-4 day.



FINAL SCORE: FLORIDA STATE 27, BAYLOR 40

It was over when: Daniel Caudle scored with just over 2 minutes left to make it a 10-point Baylor lead.

Recruiting

Klaus' introduction to the recruiting trail got a little more uncomfortable as Texas A&M snagged 4-star targets John Aguilar (DT), Eric Winfield (QB), and Frank Soto (FS). Three-star linebacker Simon Trammell also picked the Aggies, while four-star tackle prospect Denny Whiteside picked Texas Tech.

Baylor identified new prospects in four-star tackle Charles John, four-star quarterback Bernard Thomas, four-star strong safety Tyrone Berg, and three-star linebackers Steven Mathias and Larry Miller.

The Bears continue to sit in a good spot with several four-star recruits, and perhaps one or two might pop in the next week or two.

WEEK FOUR

Game Summary

Thanks to three wins on the hop, the 19th-ranked Baylor Bears entered their Big XII opener at home against Texas Tech with enormous confidence. A great opportunity to win against an in-state rival and host recruits, Klaus knew his team must continue their momentum.

The Bears got off to a lightning-quick start thanks to three Ronald Wood touchdown passes in the first half to James Large, John Betts, and John Sowers, respectively. The defense did their part in the first half as well, allowing just a field goal from 30 yards with 3:25 left in the second quarter.

Baylor came out firing again in the second half determined to put the game away. Kicker Corey Kelly was true from 38 yards and with 27 seconds left in the third quarter, Wood found Large again for their second connection for a touchdown pushing the lead to 31-3. Texas Tech finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter via a 27-yard pass from Calvin Collado. Backup kicker Michael Neal completed the scoring with a 32 yard field goal for the Bears to clinch the 34-10 victory.

Recruiting Update

Baylor received another kick in the teeth as four-star running back Antonio Caldwell selected Texas A&M. Meanwhile, four-star guard William Wright picked Texas Tech over the Bears despite Baylor's lopsided victory, and three-star linebacker Erik Hopkins picked Virginia. With another three players off the board, the staff began to move to unearth new targets.

Four-star wide receiver Nelson Williams was added to the board as the coaches do not seem to be getting positive vibes from Pedro Griffin, but will continue to pursue Griffin. Kevin Niles, a four-star guard out of Mississippi, was offered instead of Wright who is now off the table. Four-star running back Donald Mock out of New Mexico was added to the board in the stead of Caldwell. Three-star tackle prospects William Cave and Eddie Vitale were both added to the board to be monitored to see if they might be able to provide some depth along the offensive line.

WEEK FIVE

West Virginia Mountaineers (1-3) @ No. 11 Baylor Bears (4-0)

Game Summary

As the season has progressed, this undefeated Baylor squad has answered every challenge. Despite the confidence they have been playing with, added pressure has come with a ranking that reads 11th nationally. When the struggling Mountaineers came to town, it would be an opportunity for complacency to set in.

The first quarter went according to plan, for the most part. Corey Kelly hit a 55-yard field goal on the Bears' first drive to open the scoring. Daniel Caudle added his 6th rushing touchdown about 6 minutes later to make it 10-0.

The second quarter was ugly. The offense could not get going and the defense struggled to regain their focus. West Virginia scored two straight touchdowns and with 9:31 left in the half, held a 14-10 lead, one set up by a Ronald Wood interception that was returned 64 yards. It was one of his two interceptions thrown on the day. Baylor rallied, though, and Edward Forest cashed in from 21 yards out from a perfect pass from Wood to give Baylor a 17-14 lead heading into the break.

The Bears came out of halftime with a renewed focus after a little bit of a wake-up call. Senior running back Gordon Gabriel added two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, while the defense kept WVU off the scoreboard, good enough for a 31-14 lead.

It was Gabriel again with 14:20 to go in the 4th who ran it in from one yard out to move the score to a safer 38-14 margin. WVU, not to go quietly, recorded two straight field goals to cut the lead to 18. But tailback James Serrano shut the door with a late touchdown to seal the 5th win for Baylor.

Recruiting Update

Again, Texas A&M delivered more blows to Baylor's recruiting grabbing commitments from 4-star targets Pedro Griffin (WR) and John Sparks (CB). Three-star linebacker Michael Bach also chose the Texas Longhorns. Meanwhile, the Bears have yet to secure a commitment, leaving the fan base concerned despite all the on-field success.

The Bears issued a new offer to three-star linebacker Larry Miller out of Mississippi, whom they should have a good shot at. Four-star guard Kevin Niles, also from Mississippi, received an offer after being evaluated the week before by the staff.

Three-star prospects Aaron Centeno (OG), Mark Cook (LB) and Robert Jenkins (DE) were added to the board for evaluation as the next tier of prospects. Perhaps next week would be the week for the first commitment?

WEEK SIX

Iowa State Cyclones (0-3) @ No. 8 Baylor Bears (5-0)

Game Summary

The winless Cyclones coming to visit one of the country's hottest teams that has been flawless to this point? No problem, right? Maybe not...

Everything started according to plan for Baylor as tailback James Serrano returned a punt 64 yards to set up first and goal from the one. The next play, Serrano finished it off with the game's opening touchdown. Business as usual? Not so much. The Bears defense struggled mightily keeping Iowa State from marching down the field all game long. The Cyclones tied things up 5 minutes later. But quarterback Ronald Wood found receiver William Kemp from 10 yards out for his first touchdown pass of the game and put the Bears up 14-7 at the end of the first.

The second quarter belonged to the Cyclones. Kicker Paul Hanley converted from 20 yards with 12:13 left in the half, and then John Johnson ran one in from the one yard line to give the Cyclones a 17-14 lead. Baylor kicker Corey Kelly missed a 34 yard field goal that would have tied things up heading into halftime.

Wood took the second half over and showed that he indeed was the best player on the field. Wood connected with Kemp again for a 62 yard score less than a minute into the third quarter. On their next drive, Kelly made amends for his earlier miss with a 37 yard field goal giving Baylor a 10 point lead. But the Cyclones were not afraid. William Greenwood hauled in a 4 yard touchdown pass from Christopher Sullivan to tie it up at 24 with 4 minutes left in the third. On the very first play of the next drive for Baylor. Wood found Serrano and the tailback took a short pass all the way to the house for a 74 yard touchdown.

Baylor's defense stood tall, finally, in the fourth quarter. After forcing a punt, it was Wood again with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Orlando Wills. Wood would finish with 425 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. Iowa State and Baylor would trade field goals in the later moments in the game giving Baylor yet another win and keeping the perfect season intact.

Recruiting update

Three-star kicker prospect Joseph Delong, excess to requirements, shockingly picked Tulane over Baylor. While it was not an important target, it has left people in Waco mystified at the lack of success. Three-star linebacker Mark Cook selected Houston, but that was not too unexpected. Still not a commitment in sight.

With a few less prospects to consider the Baylor staff did not spend any time looking for new recruits, but strengthened the efforts of those they were already after.

WEEK 7

No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners (4-1) @ No. 7 Baylor Bears (6-0)

Game Summary

In front of a packed out house, the seventh ranked Baylor Bears faced their toughest challenge of the season. Perennial powerhouse Oklahoma was in town, and despite their disappointing loss at Kansas State two weeks ago, they are still more than capable opponents.

Oklahoma looked very strong on their opening drive marching down the field and scoring a 37-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Baylor returned fire on their opening possession with Ronald Wood tossing a 33-yard touchdown to William Kemp. The back and forth continued, as Wood threw a horrible interception that was returned for a touchdown by Brent Lachance giving the visitors a 14-7 lead. But before the first quarter was out, tailback James Serrano evened things up again with a 3 yard touchdown run.

Things calmed down a lot from there as both defenses began to settle in. Baylor kicker Corey Kelly had the last score of the half with a 45 yard field goal that gave the Bears a 17-14 halftime lead.

Baylor's defense took control in the second half shutting the Sooners out. Kemp snared his second touchdown reception from Wood from 10 yards out midway through the third. Baylor now found themselves up 10.

Early in the fourth quarter, Wood threw his second interception inside the Oklahoma 10. The Baylor defense stood tall, though, and refused to allow a rally. Kelly added a 46 yard field goal and the Bears came away with a hugely important win.

Recruiting update

Finally, Baylor received some good news. Four-star cornerback William Wendt out of Wamego High School in Kansas said yes to the Bears. He is the No. 167 overall recruit and at a position of need for Baylor. But the news wasn't all good.

Four-star cornerback Matthew Mendoza and four-star guard Daniel Dickson opted for TCU. Four-star linebacker Benjamin Floyd picked the Florida State Seminoles and four-star linebacker Daniel Ohara picked Alabama. None of these were expected to commit to Baylor, except for maybe Mendoza. Still, the momentum doesn't seem very good despite Wendt's addition.

Three-star linebacker Rupert Dial out of New Mexico was added to the board and offered. Finally, three-star cornerback Gregory Crabtree out of Alabama was also added to the board and offered.

Baylor's undefeated run continued once again as the second Big XII power in as many weeks was dealt with at home. Baylor's offense raced out to a 24-6 halftime lead, and the defense didn't even allow a touchdown. Quarterback Ronald Wood was excellent throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns, but did have an interception. The running backs were effective by committee picking up first downs in short yardage situations. Baylor completely dominated time of possession with 38:34 compared to Texas' 21:26.

Incredibly, Baylor landed 3 commitments after their win over Texas.

Baylor put together their most comprehensive and dominant performance together to date against the surprisingly decent Jayhawks. The Bears did whatever they wanted on offense rushing and passing for over 300 yards each. Kansas scored the opening field goal, and then never did anything the rest of the game thanks to the Baylor defense.
