COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD COACH

Coastal Carolina, based out of Conway (SC), have appointed 36 year old former Quarterback Tyler Thigpen as their coach for the 2021 season and beyond. He will be flanked by former teammates OC Travis Dannelly, and DC Taylor McFadden and he looks to bring the program into relevance moving forward.

Thigpen was Coastal’s inaugural QB when the programme formed in 2003, and was their first ever All American. As QB, Thigpen had a 34-11 record before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2007 (R7, pick 217). After being released, he would see some playing time with the Chiefs across the next two seasons, before seeing out the remaining years of his career as a backup around the league

Thigpen is known to prioritise player development and enjoys working with youngsters - in particular Quarterbacks. He is incredibly loyal and a strong motivator. Whilst lacking somewhat as a recruiter, he is a decent evaluator of talent, and solid at scouting.

----
FULL COACHING STAFF

Tyler Thigpen (HC) $2.5m
Travis Donnelly (OC) $2.1m
Taylor McFadden (DC) $2.1m

Spend: $6.7m of $10m budget

INITIAL OVERVIEW

Rank: 130
Prestige: 35 (130th)
AVG Overall: 75.6 (104th)
Fanbase: 38
Approval: 24
Bandwagon: 14

Offense: 129th Nationally (10th/10 Sunbelt)
Defense: 114th Nationally (8th/10 Sunbelt)
Special Teams: 126th Nationally

HB Daniel Qualls (84 RS/SR) is regarded as the key offensive player. CB Michael Johnston (87 RS/SR) is the key defender. Of the top 10 players, 5 are Running Backs (all seniors), and we also have 2 Tight Ends and Strong Safeties. The whole balance of the roster is very poor, and we will likely cut a number of players this season, and hopefully start with something of a clean slate in 2021.

TRAINING CAMPS / REDSHIRTS 2021

We saw positive results from the vast majority of our players this year with some particularly big gains, and only one negative performer. The standouts were SS Michael Russell (+12), DE Nathan Hendricks (+10), and G Anthony Snyder (+10). DE Benton Oh (-4) was the only disappointment. At this stage Hendricks and Snyder have probably earned starting roles, vehicle Russell figured to be a starter in his final year of school.

We opted to cut 3 players who we felt would never make it here, and redshirted 9 more:

(So) QB William Crawford 74
(Fr) T Ralph Jack 65
(So) WR Gilbert Dye 76
(So) WR Billy Reedy 76
(So) LB Phillip Bowie 74
(So) LB Robert Briones 74
(So) DT Richard Wood 76
(Fr) DE Donald Wright 62
(Fr) FS Randall Peoples 70

Lastly, we opted to move SS Genaro Juarez down to LB. At 85 OVR, and great size at 6-2, 214, Coach McFadden suggested he move down to the middle rather than seeing out his last year of eligibility backing up Michael Russell. CB Roy Nguyen, a fourth year senior also moved to FS, due to an excess of quality CB’s and no real talent further back.

PROJECTED LINEUPS / RECRUITING PREVIEW

QB - Jimmie Stevens 78 (RS JR)
HB - Daniel Qualls 84 (RS SR)
FB - Adan Johnson 69 (FR)
WR - Samuel Roque 80 (RS JR)
WR - Nicholas Henke 80 (SR)
TE - Russell Drury 84 (RS SR)
T - Lucas Gooding 77 (JR)
G - Sidney Breen 82 (SR)
C - Matthew Harvey 71 (RS FR)
G - Anthony Snyder 80 (RS JR)
T - Jeremy Lerma 77 (JR)
SLWR - Patrick Lozano 81 (SR)

In general our linemen seem to be slightly better at run blocking. Our QB lacks any great level of ability, so we will focus on our running game at this stage, and utilise our Tight Ends for some shorter passes. With 5 strong Running Backs, we will utilise a committee approach

DT - Mark Corcoran 80 (SR)
DT - James Elliott 80 (SR)
DT - David Shiveley 80 (SR)
OLB - Craig Partin 77 (RS SO)
LB - Sherman Handley 79 (RS JR)
LB - Hong Paulsen 78 (RS SO)
OLB - Genaro Juarez 85 (RS SR)
CB - Michael Johnston 87 (RS SR)
CB - James Oswalt 84 (SR)
FS - Roy Nguyen 80 (SR)
SS - Michael Russell 86 (RS SR)
EDGE - Nathan Hendricks 79 (JR)
EDGE - Kevin Mercedo 78 (JR)
NCB - Elliott Nieto 82 (SR)

Our front seven probably give us the flexibility to use either 3-4 or 4-3. The DT’s are more Nose Tackle type players, whilst the DE’s probably won’t be elite pass rushers. Our linebackers seem mediocre. The strength of the unit lies in the secondary, so hopefully the front 7 can generate some pressure on the opposition QB’s, and allow our corners and safeties to make interceptions and break up passes downfield.

KR/PR - Larry Payne 83 (RS SR)
K - Armand Dupree 84 (RS SO)
P - Derrick Mahoney 82 (RS JR)

We have 23 scholarships available for next season, and we need help everywhere other than special teams. Of the 29 key players listed above, we will be losing 15 next year. At this stage, we will be targeting the following:

OFF: QB, HB(3), FB, TE(2), WR(3), T(2), G, C
DEF: DT(2), DE, LB, CB(4), SS

The board wants us to target high upside players. I think 3 stars is probably our ceiling at this stage, so if we could get maybe 15 x 3 stars, and 8 x 2 stars, we can be happy. Our focus will be on the Carolina’s, and perhaps some coastal players from further south (Jacksonville/Savannah), as well as the Virginia coast, and possibly Delaware.

WEEK 1 & 2

After a bye in Week 1, we welcomed Akron Zips. Akron were 1-0 after a 59-13 win over Liberty Flames in their opener. Despite that, we were viewed as a slight favourite for this one.

The First Quarter saw possessions traded for the majority of it. Daniel Qualls had a couple of nice runs including one of 35 yards. Michael Goodwin would eventually score the first TD with :23 remaining to give us a 7-0 lead at the interval.

In the second, we squandered a golden chance when our WR Bigelow fumbled from 8 yards out. It wouldn’t cost us however, as Qualls would rush for a 7 yard TD on our next possession after a drive featuring a number of option runs from our QB Jimmie Stevens. Our K Armand Dupree and the Akron kicker would trade field goals to make it 17-3 at the half.

QB Stevens would throw a pick after the break deep in our own half, which led to an Akron TD, before Dupree hit a 46 yard FG to take us back out to 20-10.

The lead would be closed to 20-16 after Akron scored from a QB sneak and missed the XP. But a pair of QB option touchdowns to Stevens from 38 and 1 yard respectively would blow the lead out to a very healthy final score of 34-16

COASTAL CAROLINA 34 - 16 AKRON

QB Jimmie Stevens 6/17, 68 yards + 13 rushes, 107 yards, 2 TD
HB Daniel Qualls - 12 rushes, 94 yards, 1 TD
HB Larry Payne 17 rushes, 78 yards
HB Michael Goodwin 2 rushes, 15 yards, 1 TD
WR Nicholas Henke 2 catches, 24 yards
T Lucas Gooding - 6 Pancakes
DE Kevin Mercado - Sack
LB Genaro Juarez - 8 tackles, 1 TFL
LB Sherman Handley - 6 tackles, 3 TFL
CB James Oswalt - 8 tackles, 2 passes deflected
FS Roy Nguyen - 1 sack

WEEKS 3-4

Week 3 saw another rest week, before we welcomed the 0-2 Arkansas St Red Wolves. It proved to be a real shootout, featuring a nail biting last quarter. After the Red Wolves rushed to a 3-21 lead moments into the second quarter, we finally sprung into gear to trail by 24-28 at halftime.

Touchdowns were traded in the third quarter leaving us down 31-35, until RB Francis Robinson fumbled when we were one yard out. Craig Partin would then get a safety, before Jimmie Stevens scored a 60 yard rushing TD on a QB option play to end the 3rd up 40-35.

Arkansas St would miss a FG, before scoring a TD with 5 mins to go. The 2 point conversion failed to leave the margin at 1 point. We then rushed our way down field before Armand Dupree nailed a 49 yard FG with 1:59 to play to restore our lead. We would force a 3 and out, and kneel this one out for the win.

COASTAL CAROLINA 43 - 41 ARKANSAS STATE

QB Jimmie Stevens - 11/19, 130 Yards ; 20 carries, 186 yards, 3 TD
RB Larry Payne - 12 carries, 99 yards, TD
Francis Robinson - 2 carries, 1 TD
WR Patrick Lozano - 5 catches, 77 yards
T Lucas Gooding - 6 pancakes
C Matthew Harvey - 6 pancakes
LB Genaro Juarez - 9 tackles
LB Craig Partin - 3 Tackles, Safety, TFL
DT Mark Corcoran - sack
