Jalen Daniels hung in the race based on stats and a solid season, while FSU do-everything skill player Rodney Hill and Michigan RB Donovan Edwards had emerged as frontrunners for the Heisman
#8 Baylor travelled to #10 Colorado in a massive Big XII unbeaten showdown with the Buffs prevailing going away
#4 Georgia poured cold water on #16 Auburn with a 31-7 win between the ehdges as Georgia’s Carson Beck threw for over 300 yards
Georgia Tech got to 5-4 with a great performance form QB Zachary, stunning #21 NC State in OT in Atlanta
#12 Indiana landed arguably the biggest win in school history, containing Edwards and slaying #1 Michigan 30-27 in Bloomington despite being outgained by 100 yards thanks to an efficient performance in a wild fourth quarter. The Hoosiers were second only to Colorado as the story in college football.
Virginia Tech got to 7-3 with a road win over #19 Miami, continuing a second straight midseason slide for the now 7-3 Canes
#7 Florida State travelled to #11 Notre Dame. With ND 7-1 and FSU unbeaten it wasn’t an elimination game but a key game in the CFP race which FSU pulled out 23-17
#8 Oklahoma at #14 Ole Miss however was a potential elimination game, OU’s second straight ranked game threatening to hand them a 3rd loss with many discussing how a 9-3 SEC team would deserve to get in. OU’s RB rushed for 123 yards and OU played ball control in the second half of a 7-3 win.
#15 Iowa made their first trip to the Rose Bowl in a decade, pounding #9 UCLA 30-6 in a big display of offensive prowess for their new OC, keeping their CFP hopes alive and putting the Bruins on the brink as both left the game with two losses
#18 Wake Forest’s playoff hopes in a revival year for Dave Clawson were ruined by a plucky now bowl eligible Virginia team in Winston-Salem.

Week 12
The first CFP rankings featured Ohio State as an obvious unbeaten #1 with fellow unbeatens Florida State and Colorado at #2 and #3. 1-loss Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, Texas, Indiana, and Baylor filled spots 4-9 leaving 9-0 Washington State and its MWC-heavy schedule at #10 with no eligibility for a conference champ auto-bid. The highest ranked three loss team was #19 Ole Miss at 7-3, who could still harbour some playoff dreams as the discussion around a 9-3 SEC team getting into the playoff loomed.
FSU’s Rodney Hill began pulling away in the Heisman race.
Hill rushed for 112 yards as FSU made quick work of #18 Boston College 38-6 in Tallahassee, ending some burgeonding CFP hopes for the Eagles.
A slide for Baylor continued as Houston got to 4-6 and kept its bowl hopes alive with a 30-point second half comeback to stun the Bears 33-28 in Houston behind QB Sock’s throwing.
In a third straight potential CFP elimination game OU cracked on the road in Baton Rouge against #5 LSU, getting smacked 30-3 and leaving calls for Venables job as OU had a third loss.
#12 UCLA kept is bowl hopes alive despite a rough day in Seattle in a 20-13 edge of the Huskies
Oregon continued to recover after a tough midseason in beating Wisconsin 20-7

Week 13
After a week 12 lacking significant upsets the CFP top 10 was unchanged, through intrigue surrounded whether an 8-2 Pitt team could or a 3-loss SEC team (with Mizzou, OU, and Auburn all candidates) could make the playoff.
Shadeur vastly outdeuled Jalen Daniels as Colorado’s run continued at Kansas
Cupcake week left many SEC teams as well as Florida State unchallenged.
#1 Ohio State humbles #9 Indiana 34-0, bringing the Hoosiers back down to earth. IU is now 9-2 and still holds out hope for the CFP if they can beat a solid 7-4 Purdue team at home in the Bucket rivalry game.
#10 UCLA nearly locked in their playoff hopes with a 30-10 win over 6-4 #22 USC, dropping the Trojans to 6-5 and having most calling for Lincoln Riley’s job.

Week 14
The CFP top 10’s only change was Indiana dropping to #12, surprisingly ranked above #13 Notre Dame but below #11 Iowa, all with two losses. 11-0 Washington State remained #10.
#17 Auburn was dreaming of a CFP appearance at 9-3 if they could topple #4 Alabama in Bryant-Denny. Bama came ready to play and blitzed Hugh Freeze’s team 46-0.
#16 Baylor’s resurgent season fell well shot of the CFP at a 9-3 finish being blown out by TCU, who finished 7-5, at home behind TCU’s RB Coooper.
Pitt polished a 9-3 season to save their coaches job with a win over #24 BC, who finished 8-4
Nebraska stunned #10 Iowa on the road, possibly dashing the 9-3 Hawkeyes playoff hopes behind RB Anthony and getting Matt Rhule to a bowl game, breaking the Power 5’s longest bowl drought.
Louisville stunned #23 UK to make a bowl in a rebuilding year for Jeff Brohm at 6-6.
#13 Oklahoma pounded #19 Missouri 21-9 behind a WR big time game from Jalil, making a strong case for the CFP with their top 3 schedule.
#3 Michigan won a stunning 4th straight rivalry ruining #1 Ohio State’s unbeaten season 13-0 in a swirling winds despite 3 picks of JJ McCarthy.
Mississippi State stuns #22 Ole Miss on the road to get to bowl eligbility while the Rebs fall to 7-5 in a down year for Lane Kiffin.
Washington likewise gets to bowl eligibility in a down year and beats #15 Oregon on the road 26-9

With no ranked conference title games its understood that UAB vs Memphis for the American is almost certainly for the auto-bid. With Memphis slugging through a 40-27 win
#12 Washington State went down in Las Vegas in the Pacific (Life) Vegas Showdown to #17 Oregon State (who lost at home to Purdue), leaving both with a loss and likely out of the CFP
#5 FSU crushes 9-3 NC State 58-8 in the ACC Championship in their last ACC game
#11 Colorado recovers to beat #24 Arizona State for the Big XII championship as Prime is celebrated for a 12-1 record
#3 and 11-1 Alabama looked to avenge their regular season loss in an SEC championship game rematch against #1 Georgia. Georgia bottled up Heisman candidate RB Roydell and rolled to a 20-6 win.
#2 Michigan and #6 Ohio State rematched in the first 18-team B1G Championship with both at 11-1. A late field goal drive helped Michigan triumph in a raucous atmosphere in Indianapolis, the Wolverines 5th straight win in the series and second straight

Playoff Selection: Oregon State moves up to #12 with their win, but are bumped out by #21 Memphis’s conference title to some controversy since they were denied an auto-bid before the season. Notre Dame moves up to #10 and is in, and #11 Oklahoma, at 9-3 and with the third hardest schedule in the country, is in over Oregon State to some controversy. Florida State is given the #3 seed despite being the lone unbeaten team in football with #1 Georgia and #2 Michigan’s significantly harder paths respected. LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, and Texas, all lurking are all in despite late losses. UCLA and its strong finish at 10-2 is in as well (as well as the aforementioned bubble teams Notre Dame and Oklahoma). 9-3 B1G teams Indiana and Iowa are the two next out after Oregon State.

As the calendar turns to Saturday it’s the Horseshoe for Ohio State – OU in the teams first matchup there since a series in the late 70s. OU’s revamped D comes up big a snowstorm in a 10-7 road win.
Out west #8 seed Colorado hosts #9 seed UCLA with Prime’s team winning a 44-42 shootout.
The nightcap is in Austin for Notre Dame – Texas in both coaches’ biggest ever game. Quin Ewers is replaced early by Arch Manning who leads a late rally that falls short as ND has a balanced ball control 19-17 win making for a third stunning road win on the weekend.

Fiesta: An LSU-Alabama rematch highlights New Year’s Eve. LSU avenges its lone loss on the season as Brian Kelly evens his record at LSU against Nick Saban. LSU WR Ferguson stars and the RB gets 7.5 YPC in a 40-29 LSU win.
Peach: Georgia has a virtual home game and keeps Sanders bottled up in his last college game in a 21-10 win. Deion says he is proud of what they accomplished at Colorado seeming to indicate a move, though there aren’t many open jobs at the moment.
Rose: Michigan and Notre Dame renew their rivalry at the famed Rose Bowl in a 24-0 romp for Michigan as ND QB Samuel struggles
