how do you update DDSPF 2020? do I have to do it manually?

if you have steam it will do it for you. Otherwise you just have to download updates from ehre when they are posted.

Updates are backwards compatible unless it is explicitly noted (dont think its ever happened) so shouldnt break anything/destroy progress.
