2d Play issue

Situation- My team 3rd and 8, midfield, 47 seconds to play, trailing 31-28. Our QB takes the snap on the 2-D field, rolls right, waits, eludes the rush, and appears to scramble down to the opponent 10...would actually have likely scored with the nearest defender crossing the 20...then he throws BEHIND him, to the FB back around the 35...incomplete.
My initial thought was "WTF?!" lol
Is the 2d display just for kicks? I have seen a few puzzling moments with it, but this was the first one that I yelled at the "ref" lol
