XFL Week 10: Maulers Comeback to Defeat the Ghosts

April 20, 2022

New York, NY - To open things up, the Pittsburgh Maulers got the ball and they were tricky right off the bat. On a 4th and 5, QB Dwayne Haskins looked like he was going to punt, but instead threw a first down pass to WR Jalen McCleskey, keeping the drive alive but they ended up having to settle for three. QB Case Cookus and the Columbus Ghosts' offense was quickly stifled by the Maulers defense and they were forced to punt immediately. The Maulers swiftly marched down the field, but were unable to convert on 4th down and the Ghosts took over. Stuck at 3rd & 16, the Ghosts went for it and it paid off. Cookus connected with WR Duron Carter to move the chains, and bring them to the 20-yard line. On third down, Cookus decided to run it himself, coming short of the first down and almost fumbling the ball. This time they couldn’t convert on 4th down, but they were saved by the flag. With the roughing the passer call, they move forward 15-yards and get another first down. This is where the momentum stopped with 1:49 left in the half, they dropped the ball allowing the Maulers to recover the ball. The Maulers still had all of their timeouts, but a decent amount of field to march down before the time ran out in the first half. The goal was clear, get the team into scoring position. This is exactly what they did, but it wasn’t a field goal that added to their lead. Haskins, once again playing bold, connected with TE Artayvious Lynn for a touchdown. The extra-point was blocked, but they’d take a 13 point lead going into the half.

The Maulers took possession to start the second half. Haskins started the drive with a long pass, but could not find his receiver. On 3rd & 8, Haskins fumbled the ball, but luckily for the Maulers, they were able to recover. They were still forced to punt, but it kept the Ghosts out of scoring position. The Ghosts went three and out, giving it back to the Maulers in a slow start for both teams. RB Garrett Groshek fumbled the ball for the Maulers, but the officials put the play under review and although it was close, there wasn’t enough to overturn the call, giving the Ghosts the ball with great field position. In a twist of fate, just when it seemed like the Ghosts would narrow the gap, the Maulers defense forced a fumble giving them the ball once again. Even though they secured the ball again, they couldn’t get the offense moving. The Ghosts ended the third with the ball after neither team was able to have a meaningful drive. Starting out the 4th, the Maulers nearly botched the punt return, which would have given the Ghosts a defensive touchdown. WR Jeff Thomas changed the Maulers’ luck, securing the first down on the next play. The Maulers had possession, but not for long. They fumbled the ball, giving the Ghosts great field position. Cookus secured the first touchdown of the night for his team when he found WR Braxton Miller in the end-zone making the score, 13-8. Haskins continued to move the ball for the team, bringing them into scoring position. Haskins ultimately handed it off to RB Madre London to secure a touchdown and the eleven point lead. Cookus came out swinging, looking impressive, he brought his team in a position to chisel away at the Maulers lead. RB Matt Colburn was able to bring the team to 1st & Goal. RB Darnell Holland was the guy to cross the goal line and make the score, 19-16. The Maulers had the ball, but the Ghosts still had all three of their timeouts. The Maulers weren't going to go conservative. Thomas secured a huge pass from Haskins, giving them great position at the 2-minute warning. They wanted to score but they also wanted to run as much time off the clock as possible. They kicked the field goal, securing the game with 24 seconds left.

XFL Week 10: Valor Conquer the Alphas

April 21, 2022

Atlanta, GA - Blake Bortles and the Washington Valor started the game with possession, putting the Atlanta Alphas on defense. The Valor came out strong, continuously moving the chains. But, ultimately it wasn’t enough to get into scoring position. Forced with a 4th down, they punted it away giving the Alphas their first chance with the ball. The Alphas could not do much with the ball, going three and out punting the ball back. The Valor came out strong on their next drive, moving the ball in convincing fashion. Bortles was able to keep the chains moving, getting the Valor well within scoring position. After bringing the team to the goal-line, Bortles handed it off to RB Javorius Allen to grab the first touchdown of the night. QB JT Barrett came back out, wanting to even the game for the Alphas. The first few plays didn’t look great, but RB Isaiah Crowell came out strong and picked up 13-yards to keep the drive alive. Presented with 3rd & 3, Barrett connected with TE Keith Towbridge who was able to grab some massive yardage. The Alphas were now in the best field position of the night and wanted to get on the board. At the two-minute warning the team was stuck at 4th down near mid-field. Knowing that if they went for the field goal they’d give the Valor great field position, they opted to punt it away. The Valor definitely wanted to add to their lead going into the half. Bortles was looking as good as ever, moving the ball both by land and air. Bortles spotted WR Davaris Daniels deep in the red-zone, for a long reception and ultimately another six. On the next Alphas possession, they had to punt the ball away deep in their own zone. This led to more bad news for the Alphas when the punt was blocked. DB Sherrod Baltimore grabbed the ball, giving the Valor their third touchdown of the night.

The Alphas will start out the second half down three scores and possession of the ball. The offense was looking much more fluid this time around. Barrett was moving the ball in the air and on the ground. Now, within the 30 for the first time of the game, the team moved the chains and kept their drive going before Crowell got Atlanta on the board. The Valor had the ball again, but not for long. The Valor fumbled the ball, giving the Alphas another chance to add to their score and bring the game closer. The Alphas came out in convincing fashion. Moving the ball and the chains on multiple instances. Ending the 3rd, the Alphas were in the red-zone. K Younghoe Koo came back out for the team and nailed the 29-yard attempt. K Nick Vogel knocked in a 46-yard field goal putting them up 24-10. Barrett moved the ball and brought his team in scoring position again. This time he ended the drive by tossing to WR Justin Hardy. With 3:42 left, the Valor were almost doing too good at running down the clock, calling a timeout so they could regroup. They didn't grab another touchdown, but Vogel came out with another field goal for the team, giving them a 27-17 lead with little time to go.

-- (8-1)Valor 27 - 17 Alphas(4-5)
(DC): QB Bortles - 20/28 243 yards, 1 TD, RB Allen - 22 carries, 102 yards, 1 TD, WR Daniels - 6 catches, 89 yards, 1 TD
(ATL): QB Barrett - 23/32 203 yards, 1 TD, RB Crowell - 19 carries, 88 yards, 1 TD, WR Hardy - 5 catches, 83 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 10: Ouch! Big, Big Mistakes Hurt Stampede in loss to Breakers

April 22, 2022

Detroit, MI - Four huge mistakes, the explosive plays head coach Paul LaPolice talks about being deciding factors in how a game can swing killed the Oklahoma City Stampede. A blocked punt, a screen pass and two interceptions. Four touchdowns for the Los Angeles Breakers. And while Oklahoma City had a blocked punt for a touchdown of its own, it was game over. The Stampede defense was terrific in the first half. The offense got the ball moving, but couldn’t finish the deal often enough. QB Bryce Petty did some good things but he did some bad things, too, things that put the game out of reach. And the special teams that are usually really special, let a Breaker go free right up the middle for an easy blocked punt. Oklahoma City actually led 9-8 at halftime. “Anytime you lose, it’s frustrating,” said Stampede WR Jazz Ferguson. “You always want to come out on top. We were in the game the entire time. Take away those four plays. Although the score didn’t show it, we felt the energy on the sideline. We see the film, see where we went wrong, correct those mistakes, try not to make them again and keep pushing forward.”

A beautifully set up screen pass, with QB Kyle Sloter lobbing it to RB Ezra Gray, went for a 63-yard touchdown down the left sideline early in the third quarter and it was 14-9 for the Breakers. After a 16-yard return by WR Jerrod Heard, Oklahoma City started on the 41. After Petty bobbled a snap, he tried to flip a pass to WR Geremy Davis, but the ball was tipped into the air by DL Davin Bellamy, picked off by LB Christian Sam and taken 71 yards for a touchdown. The convert made it 21-9. A 21-yard touchdown pass to TE Sal Cannella with a bit more than three minutes left in the third quarter made it 28-9. DB Aashari Crosswell stepped in front of a pass intended and ran 82 yards for a touchdown. The Stampede did get a huge special teams play of their own, with DB Donatello Brown diving to block a punt and it was picked up in the end zone by DB D'Montre Wade for the touchdown with 11:30 left in the game, making it 35-16. On fourth and less than a yard, the Breakers gambled on their own 25 and failed but another interception by Petty gave Los Angeles the ball back. Oklahoma City took a roughing the kicker penalty when Wade hit P Matt White after he had punted. With 1:25 left, it was already game over.

XFL Week 10: Backup QB Heinicke leads Crusaders to Last-minute Comeback Victory over Tampa

April 22, 2022

Memphis, TN - Backup QB Taylor Heinicke came off the bench and led the London Crusaders to a late and dramatic scoring drive, as London edged the Tampa Bay Bandits, 20-16 before 25,236 spectators. Heinicke entered the game with two minutes remaining after QB Jordan Ta'amu was injured with the ball at the 45-yard line. Heinicke passed 16 yards to WR Malik Henry, then connected with WR Carlton Agudosi for 19 yards before Heinicke gained 17 yards on a draw. RB Christine Michael then scored on a seven-yard run. The Crusaders couldn’t have started the game more fortuitously. London scored on its opening possession, going 61 yards on only three plays. The series began with Ta'amu connecting with WR L'Damien Washington for a 32-yard pass play. That was followed by a 24-yard run by Michael. The Crusaders then immediately took advantage of a breakdown in the Tampa secondary. Ta'amu connected with a wide-open Agudosi for a five-yard touchdown. It certainly appeared as though the home team was going to bury the Bandits. However, yet again, the Crusaders lacked a killer instinct. Nothing comes easily for this team. But the Bandits finally generated some offence at the end of the quarter. A pass to WR Charone Peake was good for a 15-yard gain. RB Karlos Williams then gained 15 yards. On the opening play of the second quarter, K Ernesto Lacayo kicked a 35-yard field goal to get the visitors on the scoreboard.

The Crusaders appeared primed to increase their lead on their next series, thanks to a 20-yard pass to the always-reliable Washington. But, scrimmaging from the Tampa 23, Ta'amu attempted a sideline pass to Agudosi. However the ball was intercepted by DB Mohammed Seisay, who made a great play, stepping in front of Agudosi. The Bandits creeped closer when the Crusaders conceded. Tampa took an 8-7 lead on Lacayo’s 21-yard field goal, set up by QB BJ Daniels’ 36-yard scamper. The Crusaders regained their scoring touch following the halftime break, although they had to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. London took a 10-8 lead on a 45-yard field goal. Following an interception by Crusaders DB Darius Hillary on a tipped pass, they increased the lead to 13-8 with a 26-yard field goal. Ta'amu gained 20 yards on the drive, avoiding a serious injury on the play when Tampa DB Godwin Igwebuike left his feet and delivered what appeared to be a head shot. It wasn’t long before hostilities began erupting between the two clubs. Lacayo kicked a 32-yard field goal late in the third quarter and then the Bandits assumed a one-point lead with his 25-yarder in the fourth period.

XFL Week 10: Dragons Win High Scoring Affair

April 23, 2022

Detroit, MI - Things got off to a blazing start, as RB LaMichael James took the opening kickoff 88 yards to the house, putting the Seattle Dragons on top 7-0 early. Unfortunately for the San Diego Fleet, it was the opposite for them. The Dragons quickly snuffed out their opening drive, as they had to punt after a three and out. On their first drive of the day, the Dragons did an phenomenal job of slowly marching down the field, taking up time and scoring. QB Ben DiNucci found TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins for a 5 yard touchdown and the Dragons went up 13-0. Despite a great return from RB DeAnthony Thomas, the Fleet had to punt the ball away, but in a turn of events, the punt was muffed, and the Fleet recovered it, setting them up inside the 5 yard line to end the quarter but the Fleet had to settle for three after the excellent field position. The Dragons efficiently marched the ball down the field, but had to settle for three, which gave them a 16-3 lead. On the first play, Thomas took it in from 84 yards out and it was 16-9 just like that which was exactly what the Fleet needed to jump start an offense that was dead in the water. The Dragons were able to push the ball down into Fleet territory, giving them a 19-9 lead going into halftime.

QB Josh Johnson missed a couple of throws to start the second half, which in turn resulted in another punt for the Fleet offense. Some impressive pressure from the Fleet defensive line unsettled DiNucci and the Dragons were held to a field goal attempt. However, it was blocked and a good return by DB Anthony Orange set up the Fleet with solid field position. The Dragons defense held up quite well and K Giorgio Tavecchio ended up kicking a field goal making it a 19-12 ball game. James continued to put on a show. He caught a screen out of the backfield from DiNucci and then broke multiple tackles, taking it to the house from 47 yards out. After the Fleet started to find some momentum, Johnson threw up a prayer and it was picked off by DB Mike Stevens. However, a late penalty for roughing the passer was called, and the Fleet were set up with good field position going into the 4th. Thomas ran it in from 8 yards out and it was 25-19 in the early 4th quarter. James returned another kickoff to the house and a successful two point conversion made it a 33-19 ball game. As the fourth quarter wound down, the Dragons offense continued to hum and RB CJ Prosise ran it in from one yard out to give his team a 39-19 lead. The Fleet were able to score as Johnson found WR Devier Posey on a slant route in the endzone and a two point conversion made it 39-27. DB Mar'Sean Digg somehow recovered the on side kick attempt after a bobble by WR Blake Jackson, but DB Trumaine Washington picked off Johnson, effectively ending the game.

XFL Week 10: Jousters Defense Contain the Vipers

April 24, 2022

Memphis, TN - Not finding much luck in the air, the Toronto Jousters tried their luck on the ground, bringing them in scoring position. Although QB Luis Perez came close to the end-zone, they had to settle for three. The Vipers would also have to settle for three. After a few first down, Perez brought the team close to scoring, but the drive ended poorly with another DB Jamar Summers interception on the season, giving the Vipers the ball once again. QB Spencer Rattler couldn’t do much on this drive, ultimately punting away after three and out. Perez went for a long shot down the field and found WR Eric Rogers to grab their first touch down to put them up 10-3 with time running out in the half.

The Jousters would start the second half kicking it off to the Vipers. They also couldn’t find their rhythm and this would also be their fifth consecutive three and out. Perez brought the Jousters in scoring position, but K Boris Bede was wide on the field goal attempt keeping the game 10-3. The Vipers would take possession and take the game into the next quarter with no score from either team in the 3rd. The Vipers had the ball, but they could make much happen. The Jousters also had trouble on offense, kicking away and botching the punt, giving the Vipers great field position. The Vipers, down seven, curiously went for the field goal with just over 7-minutes left. This gave the Jousters the ball, they couldn't run out the clock completely, but they brought it down to 37 seconds. This would be the Vipers last chance, with 2 seconds to go Rattler went all out and tossed a Hail Mary that felt to the turf.

-- (7-2)Vipers 6 - 10 Jousters(3-6)

Ta'amu Shoulder Injury puts Crusaders in Heinicke's hands

April 24, 2022

London, ENGLAND - Now in his third season with the London Crusaders, there has been little body of work with which to distinguish QB Taylor Heinicke, a typical backup quarterback who enters the game late, when the outcome has been determined, or when the starter was injured. But that’s about to change. In what undoubtedly was his finest moment with the team, the unassuming Heinicke replaced an injured QB Jordan Ta'amu and, with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, directed his team 65 yards over seven plays, capped by RB Christine Michaels’ seven-yard run for the winning touchdown in London’s come-from-behind 20-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits. “I try not to place extra value on certain moments,” said Heinicke. “I truly feel it’s a blessing to go on the field and be able to compete. There’s a lot of people that want to be in this position. I don’t take that for granted.”

Crusaders starting quarterback Jordan Ta'amu is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a left shoulder injury sustained. The veteran was placed on the six-game injured list and, although no surgery’s required, London will potentially be in a struggle to make the playoffs. Ta'amu’s injury, a fractured bone in his non-throwing shoulder isn’t considered career threatening. “Taylor did a great job for us the last two weeks,” Ta'amu said. “He has a good grasp of the offense and is a really good athlete. He throws a good football. He made really great decisions in the last minutes of that game. Those were not easy throws. I have a ton of confidence in him. That’s why he’s here. With quarterbacks, time’s an ingredient for their success. You need time to practice and figure things out. I think he’s in a really good place and is ready for it. He didn’t bat an eye when he went into that game or the week before. We’re going to go on and win football games.”

XFL Week 11: Defenders Knock Off the Crusaders

May 9, 2022

London, ENGLAND - To kick off the game, the Cologne Defenders received the football and marched right down the field. QB Ryan Mallett looked sharp and RB Ka'Deem Cary took it in from four yards out to make it 7-0 early. It was a quick response from the Crusaders. They swiftly marched down the field behind some solid gains by their RB Christine Michael and then QB Jordan Ta'amu ran it into the end zone to tie the game. The Defenders quickly had to punt, as some miscommunications between Mallett and his receivers forced a three and out. In the early stages of the second period, the Crusaders took control. WR Malik Henry caught a screen pass and rumbled for 66 yards but a missed field goal kept it a tie game. Despite a solid drive from the Defenders, they stalled out and had to settle for three, taking a 10-7 lead off a field goal. The Crusaders had to punt, and the Defenders took advantage. RB Kenneth Dixon had a couple of impressive gains and then Carey ran it in for his second score of the game. However, a botched snap made Mallett have to chuck the ball forward, and it was intercepted and returned to the end zone, giving the Crusaders two points.

To start the 3rd the Defenders struck quickly, as Mallett found WR Ka'Ronce Higgins on a beautiful deep ball, putting them on top 23-9. Throughout the rest of the third quarter, the Crusaders’ offensive struggles continued and went into the fourth quarter with the Defenders up by 14. Mallett was impressive today, finding his targets in stride and putting the ball where he needed to put it. Unfortunately, on 4th and goal a dropped pass from Higgins kept the drive scoreless and it remained a 23-9 ball game. Not surprisingly, the Crusaders had to punt again and the Defenders got themselves into field goal range. However, a blocked kick led to a huge return from DB Robert Nelson and the Crusaders made it a 23-16 game with seven minutes left to play. The rest of the game was essentially missed opportunities for the Crusaders. Even though the Defenders did whatever they could to keep their opponent in the game, the Crusaders simply could not capitalize. An interception from Ta'amu, and then a turnover on downs kept the Crusaders out of reach and the Defenders held on for the 23-16 victory.

XFL Week 11: Vipers Defeat the BattleHawks

May 10, 2022

Mexico City, MEXICO - The Mexico City Vipers would start the game with the ball and after a solid return they had great field position. QB Spencer Rattler looked great, moving the ball both on the ground and in the air bringing them in the red zone. Although they got close, they could not find the end-zone. K Austin Jones came out to put them on the boards with a 31-yard field goal. QB AJ McCarron and the Charlotte BattleHawks now had their first opportunity with the ball, hoping to keep this game competitive. RB Ladarius Galloway continued to look like a well oiled machine today as he has all season. He brought the team to the redzone and wanted to keep the chains moving. The Vipers defense had their own goal, keep the BattleHawks to three and that’s just what they did. K Seth Small tied up the game from 28-yards away. Rattler took the field again, looking to build on the momentum of the first drive and Rattler had a trick up his sleeve. On 3rd down he went long to WR Markeith Ambles for one hell of a touchdown. McCarron who tried his best to keep his team close. On 4th down, the team knew they had to go for it if they wanted to stay competitive. This worked in their favor as McCarron found his target at the 2-yard line, putting them at 1st & Goal. McCarron handed it off to Galloway to grab the BattleHawks first touchdown of the afternoon. With only 24 seconds remaining in the half, the Vipers tried to add even more to their lead. They ended it out with Jones knocking in a 49-yard field goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Vipers couldn’t get it moving enough to get a touchdown, but Jones trotted out to try his leg at a 48-yard field goal attempt. Luckily for the team he was solid, extending their lead to 16-10. The Vipers defense came out strong on the kickoff, forcing a fumble and recovering the ball near the 30. This was the opening that the Vipers needed. Rattler tossed the ball to WR Martavis Bryant on the outside, who was able to run it in. Going for the kill, they opted to go for two. This worked out, after a successful conversion they now had a solid lead with less that 7 minutes left. The Vipers defense was just too much today, grabbing yet another interception and giving the offense the ball with two minutes remaining. Rather than score, they ran the time out giving them the win.

-- (5-5)BattleHawks 10 - 27 Vipers(7-3)

XFL Week 11: Brigade Handed a Beat Down by Cross town Rival

May 11, 2022

Baltimore, MD - QB Blake Bortles and the visiting Washington Valor continued their surge up the XFL standings with a dominant 39-10 win over the Baltimore Brigade. Bortles threw for 270 yards and a touchdown, completing 22-of-32 attempts. He hooked up with WR Davaris Daniels in the end zone in the first quarter. K Nick Vogel added six field goals for the Valor, including a 45-yard effort in the third quarter. Baltimore QB Clayton Thorson was held to 145 yards passing and connected on just 13-of-25 attempts and was sacked three times. Backup QB Kenji Bahar threw for 115 yards for the Brigade, who suffered their eight loss of the season.

Washington already held a commanding lead midway through the fourth when LB Jameer Thurman tipped Thorson’s pass and DB Elijah Campbell intercepted. The play set up another successful scoring for the Valor, capped with a 18-yard field goal. Fans began streaming towards the exits with five minutes left on the game clock after Washington DB Tyree Kinnel picked off a high, arcing Thorson pass and sprinted 53 yards into the end zone to put Washington up 38-10. Baltimore appeared poised to get its second touchdown of the night with just under 90 seconds to go. But Bahar’s pass sailed wide of WR Anthony Ratliff-Williams in the end zone and the Brigade instead turned the ball over on downs. The Brigade started off strong with Thorson finding WR Teo Reddin along the sidelines for a 43-yard gain in the first. Bahar scored on a one-yard run to give Baltimore an early 6-0 lead. Washington replied with a steady 13-play, 85-yard drive that ended with Bortles lobbing a 16-yard touchdown toss to Daniels. The Valor went up 7-6 after the convert and they never relinquished the lead.

XFL Week 11: Apollos Turn to Two-headed Rushing Beast Against Panthers

May 11, 2022

Detroit, MI - The winning touchdown came from WR Lucky Whitehead on a five-yard pass from QB Garrett Gilbert at the back corner of the end zone some six minutes into the fourth quarter. “A win’s a win, baby,” Whitehead said. “Sometimes they won’t look as pretty as we want them to. But in this league, you’re going to get a team that’s going to play hard and give us all they got.” Gilbert put it another way. “This was a game to show us we can’t just come into a game, no matter who the opponent is and think it’s going to be an easy walk in the park,” the quarterback said. “These guys have top-tier players as well trying to make plays, we just have to play our ball, and not play down to the other team’s standards.” Indeed, the Apollos needed some luck on this night. It came in a wild swing on back-to-back plays, midway through the fourth. On the first, a wrong read by Gilbert had interception-and-touchdown-return written all over it. Somehow, Oakland DB Tino Ellis dropped the ball. Thanking his lucky stars, he’d already tossed a costly interception in the end zone, Gilbert reared back on the next play and found Whitehead for a 48-yard gain. Three plays later, Whitehead was wide open for a five-yard touchdown in the corner of the end zone and the Apollos had the game in a vice, up 23-16.

It took 27 minutes for the game’s first touchdown, and it came with a price. RB D'Ernest Johnson took a swing pass and stumbled across the goal line before getting landed on, wrenching a body part in the process. Johnson managed to walk off on his own steam, albeit with a noticeable limp. The touchdown reception put the Apollos up, 10-8, at the half. Johnson wouldn’t return for the second half, though, replaced by RB Mark Walton, who cracked the 100-yard mark. “You’ve gotta love Garrett,” head coach Jeff Brohm said. “Tino drops that ball and he comes right back and gets Lucky Whitehead. Unfazed. He just stands in there and delivers it downfield. Great read and Lucky’s open, it was fantastic. You’ve always got a chance with a winner like that.”

-- (6-4)Apollos 26 - 16 Panthers(2-8)
(ORL): QB Gilbert - 15/24 210 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, RB Johnson - 16 carries, 105 yards, RB Walton - 11 carries, 70 yards, WR Whitehead - 6 catches, 93 yards, 1 TD, WR Marshall - 3 catches, 82 yards

XFL Week 11: The Roughnecks Outlast the Bandits in Overtime

May 12, 2022

Tampa, FL - QB BJ Daniels would start out at quarterback with his mission in hand. Daniels did his best, but Coach Spurrier was stuck in a predicament on 4th down at the one but could not convert, however, the strategy worked in their favor as the defense forced a safety. The Bandits wanted to keep this momentum going. Daniels, went long and got lucky with a pass interference call, bringing them within 10-yards of the end-zone. Now within striking distance, Daniels found WR Charone Peake to give them their first touchdown of the night for the early 9-0 lead.

The Roughnecks started out the second half with the ball. WR Tavonn Satler came out with an explosive return, bringing his team to the 15-yard line putting them in the best position of the night to score. It didn’t take long either. On the next play, QB Jake Rudock handed it to RB Alfred Blue to grab the teams first points of the night. The Bandits would now take the ball again and now with a slim lead would hope to add some points. The Roughnecks defense would have something to say about that, pushing them back to 3rd & 28. The next play didn’t help, pushing them back 7, forcing them to punt on 4th & 35. After a short drive, the team was forced to go for a field goal. For the third time, the special team unit could not produce, keeping the game 9-6 in the Bandits favor. The Bandits tried their best to add to their lead, but the Roughnecks defense made forced them to decide which option to go for on 4th down. They decided to go for six, but they couldn’t make it happen. The Roughnecks now had the ball with a chance to take the lead. Rudock came out hot, moving the chains and the receivers continuously getting out of bounds to stop the clock. The Roughnecks were now within the 20 with less than 2 minutes remaining. They only needed a field goal to tie, but wanted a touchdown to secure the win. Ultimately, they had to settle for three, going successful and tying the game near the end of the 4th. The Bandits would take control to start out the extended game, the Roughnecks defense forced a three and out, giving them excellent field position. On 3rd down, Rudock went long, finding WR Cody Core for the touchdown and the win.

XFL Week 11: The Maulers Secure Victory After Taking Out The Alphas

May 13, 2022

Pittsburgh, PA - WR Bailey Gaither continued to be a favorite for QB Dwayne Haskins to target, moving the chains for the team. Not to be outshined, RB Garrett Groshek took the ball and rushed it for some massive gains putting them in Alphas territory. The offense was looking pretty on their first drive and you could tell they knew it. Haskins took a risk, targeting WR Jeff Thomas long and it paid off. Thomas secured the pass in the end-zone, giving them an early 6-0 lead. After back to back field goals for Atlanta, it looked as if the Maulers would retake the lead, Haskins threw an interception. The interception turned to a pick-six when DB Tyson Graham was able to run it back 78-yards for the touchdown. With the Alphas back on the field, RB Isaiah Crowell ran the ball well, bringing them to the 20. WR Malachi Jones secured the pass from QB JT Barrett on the next play to bring them to 1st & Goal. On the next play, Barrett found RB Akrum Wadley in the end-zone. The extra-point was blocked, but they now lead the Maulers 19-6 with little time left in the half.

Haskins knew that they needed to strike to keep their chances alive. The offense came out like no other, moving the ball and getting them into scoring position. Haskins once again found Thomas in the end-zone for another touchdown, scoring in the first 43 seconds of the second half. Barrett tired to keep this momentum going, but could not make it happen. The Maulers now had the ball, down six with a lot of time left in the matchup. Haskins came out with a vengeance. Even when being pushed back, he found a way to move forward. Well outside of field goal position, Haskins found his target to move the chains and get them in scoring position. He connected with WR Markus Wheaton giving them a slim lead late in the third. Gaither, not wanting to feel left out, pulled in a great pass on the next drive, moving the chains once again. Haskins ended the drive strong with another touchdown, extending their lead to eight. The Alphas were still well within reach and they wanted to capitalize. Crowell knowing everything was on the line, ran for 55-yards giving them a huge 1st down but the team was forced to settle for three. K Younghoe Koo kicked it for 48-yards, bringing them within five. After the Maulers got a few first downs they milked the clock down to 19 seconds. Barrett gave it his best shot, but with little time remaining he couldn’t make it happen for the Alphas.

-- (4-6)Alphas 22 - 27 Maulers(5-5)

Jake Dolegala Expected to be Starting QB in Sunday's COVID-19 Delayed Game

May 15, 2022

New York, NY - Jake Dolegala had the quarterback position all to himself. The New York Guardians second-string quarterback was flying solo due to Josh Freeman and Connor Kaegi both being absent from practice. “It was strange,” Dolegala said. “I was warming up by myself and I’m used to chatting amongst the other quarterbacks. It was different.”

Freeman, New York’s franchise quarterback, was out due to illness. Kaegi, who is third on the depth chart, was referenced on the injury report as having an illness. “Usually you have at least one or two guys with you wherever you are,” Dolegala said. “It was unique.”

A COVID-19 outbreak has placed the team in the unique situation of finding players to fill in for those on the sideline. There was one positive test this weekend, contributing to the Guardians and the XFL moving Saturday’s game with the visiting Brawlers to Sunday. However, the situation has improved and medical officials are now confident that the XFL game can safely proceed.

XFL Week 12: More Heartbreak for Brigade as Enforcers Win on Last Play

May 16, 2022

Chicago, IL - Someday, perhaps Lady Luck will lend a helping hand to the Baltimore Brigade. May 16th was not that day. The Brigade lost on the final play of the game 26-25 when Chicago Enforcers QB DeShone Kizer pushed the ball across the goal line with a helpful shove from RB Darius Victor. Brigade looked like they caught the break they needed. This one might have been particularly tough to take for Baltimore, as it looked like the Brigade had it won after DL Chris Odom stripped Kizer and DL Domenique Davis picked up the loose ball and rumbled 58 yards for a touchdown to make it 25-20 with 5:50 remaining. But it was not to be. Kizer led a 15-play, 80-yard drive for the game-winner, converting two fourth downs along the way. The first came at the two-minute warning when he scrambled to buy time before finding TE Woody Brandom for a 15-yard gain on fourth-and-2. The second came on the final play of the game when Kizer's fourth-down dive appeared to be initially stopped, before he fell across the line. The Enforcers owned the time of possession battle in this game, controlling the ball more than twice as long as Baltimore did, 40:25-19:11.

Enforcers have a star in WR KaVontae Turpin. Lost in all the chaos of the game's finish was a dominant performance by Turpin. The 5-9, 155-pound speedster out of TCU was a force that the Brigade struggled to corral. Turpin pulled in 10 catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns as the Chicago Enforcers beat the Baltimore Brigade. The speedy receiver seems to be finding his groove, which should make the Enforcers even more dangerous moving forward.

-- (3-8)Brigade 25 - 26 Enforcers(6-5)
(BAL): QB Thorson - 15/19 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB Dawkins - 17 carries, 47 yards, WR Redding - 3 catches, 76 yards, 1 TD
(CHI): QB Kizer - 18/24 159 yards, 1 TD, RB Victor - 16 carries, 57 yards, RB Williams - 16 carries, 76 yards, 1 TD, WR Turpin - 10 catches, 106 yards, 2 TDs, 3 carries, 28 yards, 1 TD

-- (4-7)Alphas 17 - 24 Bolts(3-8)
(ATL): QB Barrett - 11/18 134 yards, RB Crowell - 20 carries, 120 yards, 1 TD, WR Jones - 4 catches, 33 yards
(BER): QB Kaaya - 14/22 156 yards, 1 TD, RB Hunt - 21 carries, 113 yards, 2 TDs, RB Sankey - 15 carries, 48 yards, WR Huff - 5 catches, 60 yards

XFL Week 12: Breakers Shift Focus to Ground Game and It Pays off

May 17, 2022

Detroit, MI - The Los Angeles Breakers found a way to get back on track. For the Pittsburgh Maulers, meanwhile, it's back to the drawing board. RBs Anthony Jones and Jordan Ellis each scored touchdowns as the Breakers ground their way to a 26-16 victory, a gritty performance. Former Florida International RB Jones made his presence known against the Maulers' defense. He punctuated an 18-play, 94-yard march downfield on a drive that took more than nine minutes off the clock in the first quarter and gave Los Angeles a lead it would not relinquish. Jones was responsible for 44 rushing yards on the first scoring drive of the game. His ability to pick up the ground game behind Breakers' leading rusher Ellis was pivotal with QB Colin Kaepernick's return from his groin injury limiting his ability to run and cut at full speed. Los Angeles' ability to go fast, snapping the ball as quickly as possible is predicated by its ability to run the ball effectively. Jones allowed them to operate at Breaker speed in the first quarter. The ground game came up big again in the third quarter. The Breakers were nursing a 10-3 lead as they took over at midfield with 6:42 to go in the period. The ensuing 10-play drive took more than five minutes off the clock and included zero pass attempts. Jones carried the ball six times for 30 yards on the drive, while Ellis had four rushes for 20 yards, including a 5-yard dash into the end zone to make it 17-3. Ellis finished with 47 yards on 13 carries, while Jones churned out 102 yards on 22 rushes. The Breakers' shifting of emphasis to the running game was something that was planned. "We talked about it in practice," Ellis said. "We prepared for this moment. We're just showing what we prepared for all week. We feed off each other."

The Breakers made life difficult for QB Matt McGloin, especially in the first half, when they held him to 3-for-9 passing for 28 yards. McGloin started to turn things around in the second half, but things were still spotty, and communication was an issue for he and his receivers in his return to the lineup. With about 12:30 to go, McGloin just missed a wide-open WR Bailey Gaither for what would have been a touchdown. The Maulers still threatened to score but were thwarted when McGloin threw a pick-six to DB Ike Brown. It was Brown's second interception of the game. On the play, it appeared that McGloin expected Gaither to stop on his route, but Gaither never turned his head and the pass went right into Brown's hands, who dashed 97 yards for a touchdown to make it 23-3. A few minutes later, McGloin did connect with Gaither on a 22-yard touchdown. He added a rushing touchdown to bring the Maulers within a score, 23-16, with 5:14 remaining. But a Los Angeles field goal iced the game. McGloin's second half was much more productive than his first and he finished by completing 17 of his 34 passes for 198 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. But there is clearly still much work to be done.

-- (6-5)Maulers 16 - 26 Breakers(6-5)
(PIT): QB McGloin - 17/34 198 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, RB London - 14 carries, 67 yards, WR Gaither - 4 catches, 71 yards, WR Hennie - 4 catches, 33 yards
(LA): QB Kaepernick - 14/23 101 yards, RB Jones - 22 carries, 102 yards, 1 TD, RB Ellis - 13 carries, 47 yards, 1 TD, WR Taylor - 5 catches, 40 yards

XFL Week 12: No Contest in Seattle

May 18, 2022

Seattle, WA - Seattle jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first half, thanks to touchdown passes from QB Ben DiNucci to RB LaMichael James and TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins and cruised to its ninth victory. The Dragons were firing on all cylinders in all phases on this night. They got touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in steamrolling over the Roughnecks for the second time this season. “That’s the type of ball that we want to put on display, three phases of football, giving it all we got for our fans and for the XFL to see,” DiNucci said. “We want to go hard all 60 minutes and give a Seattle Dragon effort.”

The Dragons put up 434 yards of total offense, including 272 through the air. DiNucci continued to look like one of the league’s most outstanding players by completing 16 of 20 pass attempts for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He was replaced by backup QB Antonio Pipkin, with the Dragons up 37-0 in the fourth quarter. WR Josh Gordon caught four passes for 93 yards and RB CJ Prosise rushed 17 times for 65 yards and a touchdown, which came on a two-yard run in the third quarter to put the Dragons ahead 23-0. Seferian-Jenkins caught a second touchdown, in the fourth quarter, after James rushed three times for 69 yards on yet another long drive. James finished with 73 yards and the Dragons had 162 rushing yards in total. Meanwhile, the Dragons defense was incredible again, holding the Roughnecks to just 222 yards of total offense. Roughnecks QB Jake Rudock completed just 15 of 31 pass attempts for 131 yards, was sacked three times, and threw a third-quarter interception to DB Winston Rose, who returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. Rose, as he has done in the past, showboated his way into the end zone, adding insult to injury for a Roughnecks team that was completely over-matched. “It’s just a dominant defense,” Rose said. “When I’m on the field, when I get a chance to get my hands on the ball, I’m trying to score. When I get a chance to score I just want to have fun with my teammates, that’s it. It’s not always about me. It’s about the team.”

XFL Week 12: Toronto Jousters Hang on for 20-17 Thriller over Host Dallas Renegades

May 18, 2022

Dallas, TX - The Toronto Jousters continued a five-game winning streak with a thrilling 20-17 victory over the host Dallas Renegades. The Jousters went ahead 20-10 after a three-yard touchdown catch by WR Eric Rogers in the fourth quarter. Dallas, however, rallied late in the fourth quarter when WR Kenny Lawler caught a four-yard touchdown pass from QB Landry Jones with 48 seconds left. Dallas’ attempt at an onside kick failed, giving the Jousters the ball at the 49-yard line. The Jousters were forced into punting, giving Dallas the ball at its 31-yard line. Toronto’s defense stiffened, saving the win for the Jousters. Toronto’s defense stood tall with DBs James Sample, Shaquille Richardson and Stanley Jean-Baptist each recording interceptions. Jones, who was sacked four times, threw two of the three picks in the second half as the Jousters rallied from a 10-6 first-half deficit. “Being the quarterback and being the guy who touches the ball every play, I’ve got to perform better there,” said Jones, who completed 21 of 31 passes for 311 yards with two touchdowns and the aforementioned three interceptions.

Toronto’s defense responded on Dallas’ next possession with DL Cordarro Law sacking Jones. On the next play, Sample intercepted a Jones pass attempt. The Jousters weren’t able to capitalize on the interception, turning the ball over at Dallas’ 35-yard line. But Toronto’s defense stiffened, forcing the Renegades into a punt. The Jousters then mounted a five-play, 32-yard march that was capped by a 48-yard field goal. The teams were tied 3-3 after the first quarter. After a 54-yard missed field goal attempt, Dallas mounted an impressive 12-play, 92-yard drive that featured two successful gambles on fourth-and-one. Jones connected on a 31-yard pass with WR Steven Dunbar that moved Dallas to the one-yard line. One play later, RB Kenneth Farrow scored on a one-yard run for a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. The Jousters answered with a promising drive that stalled at the 44-yard line after a holding penalty, a sack and QB Luis Perez being tackled for a loss before K Boris Bede connected on a 52-yard field goal to trail 10-6. Toronto squandered a scoring opportunity after Sample recovered a fumble on the kickoff at Dallas’ 36-yard line with 11 seconds remaining in the first half.

XFL Week 12: Ghosts Cruise over Crusaders

May 19, 2022

Columbus, OH - The Columbus Ghosts picked up a 35-28 win over the London Crusaders. RB Matt Colburn led the Columbus offense with 18 rushes for 140 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. London QB Taylor Heinicke passed for 333 yards and four touchdowns in the loss. An interception by Columbus DB Amani Dennis set up the Ghosts with a short field, which resulted in a 6-yard touchdown pass from QB Case Cookus to TE Bug Howard. The extra point by K Matt Mengel was good and the Ghosts took an early 7-0 lead. The touchdown proved to be the only score of the first quarter. Heinicke landed a 13-yard touchdown pass perfectly into the hands of WR Malik Henry to get the Crusaders on the board with 2:17 remaining in the first half. The Ghosts retook the lead on the next possession when Colburn rushed into the end zone from three yards out and made the score 14-7 with just a minute to play in the first half. Heinicke completed a pass to TE Levine Toilolo, who bounced off a defender and sprinted for a 37-yard touchdown. The Crusaders tied the game at 14-14 heading into halftime.

The Ghosts continued to show off their offensive skill in the third quarter. Cookus and Howard teamed up for their second touchdown of the day on a 4-yard connection to regain a 21-14 lead. Colburn rushed for his second touchdown of the afternoon with this 33-yard score. The Ghosts ended the third quarter leading 28-14. Toilolo and Heinicke connected for another score to open the fourth quarter. The 1-yard passing touchdown cut the deficit to 28-21. Colburn continued to run all over the Crusaders' defense when he rushed for his third score of the day on a 44-yard run up the middle. The score and extra point gave the Ghosts a 35-21 lead. London didn't go away easily as Heinicke found TE Cole Hunt for a 16-yard touchdown. After the extra point, the Crusaders made the score 35-28. But, the score held and Columbus took home a 35-28 win.

XFL Week 12: Derrius Guice Runs Roughshod over Stampede as Vipers Win

May 19, 2022

Memphis, TN - QB Spencer Rattler passed to WR Martavis Bryant for two touchdowns en route to the Vipers’ 37-16 victory over the Oklahoma City Stampede before 32,142 spectators. Bryant’s touchdowns covered 33 and 58 yards. RB Derrius Guice also scored on a one-yard run and DB Jamar Summers returned an interception 64 yards for a last-second touchdown. Mexico City’s offense struggled early in the game, the team failing to generate a first down on their opening two possessions. An illegal punt that went out of bounds gave the Stampede excellent field position at the 33 in the first quarter. Although the visitors eventually advanced the ball to the 19, they had to settle for a field goal to open the scoring. After a missed 48-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the period, the game turned early in the second quarter when QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson overthrew his receiver and the ball was intercepted by DB Rashaan Gaulden, who returned it 12 yards to the Toronto 33. On the next play, Rattler found Bryant in the end zone for a touchdown. But the Stampede responded immediately, requiring only four plays to 73 yards and regain the lead. Bethel-Thompson found WR Jazz Ferguson for a 38-yard gain before connecting with WR Geremy Davis for 27 yards. RB Cameron Artis-Payne then ran eight yards off-tackle for the touchdown and a 10-7 lead. Three plays later, Rattler and Bryant took advantage of a breakdown in the secondary, connecting on a 58-yard pass-and-run touchdown. The score gave Mexico City a 14-10 lead and it never trailed again. The Vipers went 64 yards in 11 plays on their next possession. That included a 14-yard pass to WR Deion Holliman and a 11 yarder to Bryant. Rattler also connected with TE Evan Rodriguez for a 10-yard catch.

But it was Guice who did the heavy lifting, carrying seven times on the drive, including the final four plays. He finally scored on a fourth-down gamble from the one, increasing the Vipers’ lead to 21-10. Before halftime, Bethel-Thompson fumbled after being hit by LB Pita Taumoepenu. The ball was recovered by DL Robert Windsor at the 42. A 24-yard pass to Bryant following the break put the Vipers in scoring position, but they eventually settled for another 43-yard field goal. A 65-yard run by Guice, his longest run of the season, put the ball at the 15. Nonetheless, the Vipers couldn’t put the ball into the end zone. The normally-reliable Rodriguez dropped a pass on first down and Mexico City settled for another 21-yard field goal on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Artis-Payne’s second short touchdown run at 8:40 made the final score more respectable.

XFL Week 12: Panthers Couldn't Compete with Stallions

May 20, 2022

St. Louis, MO - The Oakland Panthers were better late but it wasn’t enough, as St. Louis scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 33-17 victory. QB Shea Patterson went 3-for-7 for 13 yards on the Panthers’ first three drives, which resulted in a game-opening 56-yard field goal and two punts, then had to sit as a lightning strike in the area delayed the game. When the game resumed, QB Paxton Lynch was noticeably better, completing 21 of his 28 passes for 186 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Turnovers were costly for the Panthers, leading directly to 10 points for the Stallions. As the two-minute warning approached in the first half, Lynch threw short to WR Lance Lenoir at the Panthers’ 19 for 3 yards, only for Lenoir to fumble it on a turnover forced by LB DeMarquis Gates. The Stallions recovered on the 18 and three plays later turned it into a field goal and a 13-10 lead going into the half.

After the teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, St. Louis turned to backup QB Alex McGough and RB Bo Scarbrough to ignite its offense. The duo combined for seven runs for 71 yards, capped by a 28-yard run by Scarbrough, to give St. Louis a nine-point lead. The Panthers’ rally was cut short, three plays later. After two quick passes from Lynch covering 13 yards, the QB’s third attempt of the drive, from the 50-yard line, was batted into the air by a defensive lineman and caught by Stallions DL Jonathan Newsome at the Panthers’ 47. From there, the Stallions needed 10 plays to find the end zone again, helped by a 40-yard pass from McGough to WR Peyton Ramzy after Panthers DB Jameson Houston lost track of Ramzy on a delayed pass play.

XFL Week 13: Ghosts Take Advantage of Brigade' Late-Game Struggles

May 23, 2022

Baltimore, MD - The Brigade surrendered a lead late, letting the Ghosts rack up a stunning 22-0 advantage in the final quarter on the way to a 35-24 victory. The Brigade entered the fourth quarter with a 24-13 lead, only to see their four drives in the final period end without points. Meantime, the Ghosts got a 39-yard scoring pass from QB Case Cookus to WR Jordan Suell, a 3-yard scoring run by RB Matt Colburn and two field goals, not to mention a safety to turn a big Brigade edge into a tight game and then into a Ghosts' runaway.

The Brigade gave QB Kenji Bahar his first real look at playing time and it was a bit of a struggle. On the surface, his numbers look pretty solid. Bahar completed 18 of 25 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. His passer rating was a solid 92.1 but he also gave up two turnovers and both of them came in the fourth quarter. His pick to DB Channing Stribling set Columbus up for an easy field goal and a 30-24 lead and his fumble came on the first play of the ensuing possession when he was strip-sacked by LB Adam Rodriguez. Four plays later, another field goal made it 33-24 and essentially iced the game. Despite the late fade, it will be interesting to see if Bahar gets another look in Week 14 with QB Clayton Thorson out.

XFL Week 13: Bo Scarbrough Boosts Stallions' Offense in Win

May 24, 2022

Pittsburgh, PA - The St. Louis Stallions defeated the Pittsburgh Maulers 26-16 in a comeback win as RB Bo Scarbrough rushed for 100 yards. A matchup with the Maulers without starting QB Dwayne Haskins seemed like a recipe for an easy win, but injuries to several St. Louis receivers made this contest a battle of attrition, forcing the Stallions to lean on RB Bo Scarbrough and the ground game. Scarbrough was a dominant force, gaining 100 yards on 27 carries. But he wasn't the only star to shine for St. Louis though Scarbrough would get to play the role of finisher, it was the QB J'Mar Smith and his playmaking WR Victor Bolden who kicked off the festivities, connecting on a dazzling 53-yard deep ball early in the first quarter to help stake the Stallions to an early lead. Targeting Bolden has been a focal point of Holtz's strategy all season long. He showed off the exciting combination of athleticism and reliable hands which have made him so successful as a receiver and returner. Focused on the target drifting open even as the pocket was collapsing around him, Smith lofted a strike deep down the middle to hit Bolden perfectly in stride. While the trajectory and accuracy from Smith were pinpoint, Bolden was faced with a difficult catch as the ball sailed directly over his head, rather than over a shoulder. The tracking skills and concentration required to pull off a grab like that is a perfect example of a talented receiver making a very difficult grab appear easy. Fans hoping the early big play would spark an aerial assault between Smith and Pittsbugh's QB Matt McGloin were instead treated to a good old-fashioned battle of wills and bulldozing backs, however. Both teams struggled to consistently move the ball through the air. Take away the 53-yarder to Bolden and Smith completed just eight of 23 passes for 85 yards. That total is even more than what the Maulers accomplished, however, with McGloin completing just six of 14 passes for 58 yards before head coach Byron Leftwich opted to finish the game with QB Josh Love. Perhaps not surprisingly, Love was even less effective than McGloin, completing just three of nine passes for 25 yards.

Since neither team had much luck throwing the ball, especially after Bolden joined fellow starting WR Marlon Williams on the sidelines in street clothes, Holtz and Leftwich understandably switched their focus to the running game. Things got so bad, in fact, that the Stallions gave former starting QB Alex McGough a shot at receiver. The Stallions leaned heavily on Scarbrough as their workhorse, giving him the ball on 27 of their 38 total rushing attempts in this game but it was former starting RB CJ Marable and rarely-running RB Bobby Holly, who provided the big plays for St. Louis, with each scoring touchdowns. Holly turned in arguably the biggest play of the game, taking a direct snap off of a fake punt to sprint 52 yards for the go-ahead score early in the third quarter. The fake was brilliantly called and executed, with Holly effectively catching the snap, faking to his right and then exploding through one of several massive holes produced by a burly St. Louis offensive line. Though it lacked the splashy plays of prior weeks, this victory by the Stallions was impressive in that Holtz's team was able to muscle its way to a win despite the offense being almost entirely dependent on the run. A less-complete team might have stumbled but with the intimidating Scarbrough and a fearsome front leading the way, St. Louis is literally and figuratively running downhill through the XFL.

-- (12-0)Stallions 26 - 16 Maulers(6-6)
(STL): QB Smith - 9/24 138 yards, RB Scarbrough - 27 carries, 100 yards, TE Surratt - 2 catches, 46 yards
(PIT): QB McGloin - 6/14 58 yards, RB London - 18 carries, 99 yards, 1 TD, WR Gaither - 3 catches, 18 yards

XFL Week 13: Enforcers Ride Defense, Running Game to Victory

May 25, 2022

Memphis, TN - Despite playing without QB DeAndre Johnson for the first time this season, the Enforcers came out with a victory, 20-13 against the Memphis Showboats. QB DeShone Kizer played the entire game, completing 19 of 25 pass attempts for 174 yards with a touchdown but it was the defense that shined most for the Enforcers, creating three turnovers and hurrying Showboats QB Ryan Willis, who completed just 17 of 37 pass attempts for 234 yards, with one TD and three interceptions. "Ryan was efficient," Haley said. "He made some really big throws for us in critical situations. We just need to start faster."

In their first scoring drive, the Enforcers gained at least 10 yards on five of eight plays, including Victor's 20-yard scoring run straight up the middle of Memphis' defense. Victor finished with 72 rushing yards on 14 carries and the touchdown. On fourth-and-3 with just 1:32 left in the first quarter, and his team on the 48 yard-line, Haley called up an "Ah, damn" screen, where the defense ends the play saying, "Ah, damn." After lining up just off the right tackle and reporting as eligible, OL Corbin Kaufusi sprinted across the field on a play-action flag route and made a stupendous catch-and-run for 32 yards. Kaufusi looked like he'd been playing receiver most of his career. Showboats K Tyler Rausa converted a 34-yard field goal for Memphis' first points of the ballgame. "Our secret weapon," Haley joked. "That was awesome," Kaufusi said. "We'd been planning it for a few weeks, but finally getting to do it was sweet."

But that was perhaps the only time the Enforcers' defense was caught out of position in the first half. Chris Dishman's defense held Memphis to 72 total yards and just 21 on the ground. DB Davon Askew-Henry picked off Willis twice in the second quarter. The first came in Memphis territory and Victor punched it into the end zone three plays later to give the Enforcers a double-digit lead. To make the Showboats' chance worse, Willis threw his third interception of the game to Enforcers DB Shalom Luani. Luani has picked off four passes while playing in only five games. He's tied for the league lead in INTs with Columbus Ghosts DB Channing Stribling and Baltimore Brigade DB Will Likely and first among safeties. Despite beginning the game with just seven completions along with those three interceptions on 21 passing attempts, Willis completed a touchdown pass to WR John Franklin for a Showboats touchdown that cut the Enforcers' lead to 20-13. After the Memphis defense held up, Willis had the ball with five minutes to go and a chance to tie or take the lead but, on fourth-and-14 from the 46-yard line, Haley chose to punt, pinning Chicago on its own 9-yard line with 4:53 left to play. The gamble on his defense paid off and Haley's offense returned to the field with 1:54 left and two timeouts in what would have to be an 83-yard march. WR Vinny Papale gave the Showboats life when he snagged a 15-yard catch on third-and-11 to move the sticks. Going fast, Willis then found TE Cheyenne O'Grady for 26 yards for another big gain. A pass interference call on the next play moved them to the Enforcers' 29. Chicago moved to the 16 when TE De'Quan Hampton caught a pass on a crossing route. With the game on the line and 35 seconds left on fourth-and-7, Askew-Henry batted away what could've been a touchdown pass to Papale to seal the victory. "I put myself in uncomfortable situations in practice," Askew-Henry said, "so when game time comes, it's pretty much easy."

XFL Week 13: Berlin Bolts Hang in, but Fall to Orlando Apollos

May 25, 2022

Memphis, TN - It was another loss. At "home", where the Berlin Bolts have felt plenty of pain going back to Covid. The Bolts did some things well, they trailed 13-10 at halftime, they once again fell, this time 26-13 to the Orlando Apollos. “We need to win a football game. That’s what we get paid to do,” said QB Brad Kaaya. “As I see it, the execution was good enough for us to kick field goals, score touchdowns. It’s disappointing, it’s still a loss. You have to go into that room with those guys who worked their tails off and talk to them after a loss. That’s the hard part.” Kaaya completed 15 of 29 passes, one of them for a touchdown, for the Bolts. He also ran for 68 yards. But it wasn’t enough. “The Apollos came out in the second half more aggressive on the defensive line,” said Kaaya. “We just didn’t match that energy and I didn’t make enough plays for us to get some points on the board."

On the first offensive play of the game, the Bolts got tricky. Kaaya handed off to WR Dontez Ford, who heaved a pass downfield just over the defense. On Berlin’s next possession, Kaaya bought time by rolling right and lofted a pass to a wide-open WR Josh Huff for a 50-yard completion. But the drive stalled at the eight, with the Bolts settling for a 15-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. A costly offside penalty on what would have been a punt gave Orlando new life. The Apollos marched downfield and settled for a 43-yard field goal. The Bolts got a touchdown late in the first quarter, with Kaaya finding TE Gavin Escobar, who jumped to make the catch deep in the end zone. The convert made it 10-3 for the home side. A 39-yard completion to WR Donte Moncrief gave Orlando the ball on the three. On the next play, RB D'Ernest Johnson ran in for the touchdown that tied it 10-10. A 27-yard field goal gave Orlando a 13-10 lead. On their first drive of the second half, the Apollos took a 16-10 lead with a 28-yard field goal.

On a fourth-down gamble, needing a bit more than a yard, deep in Orlando territory, Berlin got the first down and more on an Kaaya QB sneak, but the Bolts took a costly illegal procedure penalty, wiping out the play. A field goal from the 24 closed the gap to three points at 16-13. A 26-yard pass to WR Jalin Marshall gave Orlando the ball in Berlin territory. On second-and-short, Orlando finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown toss from backup QB Tommy Stevens to Moncrief on the final play of the third quarter. The convert made it 23-13. After a bobbled kickoff and an illegal block penalty, the Bolts started from their own three-yard line. A six-yard catch by former Apollo RB Akeem Hunt, a 14-yard scramble by Kaaya and an illegal contact penalty on the Apollos got them out of the deep hole. The drive stalled at midfield and the Bolts had to punt. The Apollos slowly moved the ball downfield in the final few minutes with Orlando getting a 47-yard Paredes field goal with 2:09 left. The Bolts turned the ball over on their own 47 when a fourth-down gamble failed with 1:17 left. Berlin got the ball back on the next play when RB Mark Walton fumbled, it was forced and recovered by LB Cameron Judge. The Bolts gave the ball back on another failed fourth-down gamble.

XFL Week 13: Costly Missed Kicks Down the Stretch put the Boots to Commanders in Oklahoma City

May 26, 2022

Oklahoma City, OK - K Nick Rose was 0-3 on fourth-quarter field goals as the San Antonio Commanders fell 31-29 in overtime to the Oklahoma City Stampede. He missed from 37, 50 and 37 yards. He had the potential game-winner from 50 yards blocked with 53 seconds left and then after Oklahoma miscalculated the clock with three straight knees, the Commanders got another shot from 37. He missed wide right to keep the score at 23-23. The Stampede scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the extra period to take the lead, but QB Logan Woodside hit WR Greg Ward with a 32-yard strike to keep pace, before failing on the two-point conversion. Rose had started the season 14-of-14, but has missed five of his last six kicks. “We need everybody to make plays. Everybody,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “These games come down to literally one or two plays and so we needed to make a few more plays, including him and me making calls, all that stuff. So it’s all of us together and finding ways to make a few more plays.”

It looked like the tough times would continue for the Commanders after the first drive, when he tossed his second pass of the day into the dirt three yards short and behind WR Josh Doctson, then getting picked off by DB D'Montre Wade on a deep-ball attempt. But by halftime, QB Logan Woodside had 159 yards and two touchdowns and was back tossing bombs downfield like he had in the first half of the 2019 season. But the rain started sheeting down in the second half, affecting Woodside’s accuracy and ability to grip the ball, and the Commanders went three-and-out on four of their first eight drives in the second half. “I had a tough time controlling the ball in the second half, for sure,” said Woodside. Two late field goals staked Oklahoma City to a 16-14 half-time lead. Oklahoma City settled for K Austin MacGinnis’ chip shot following a strong defensive stand from San Antonio as the Stampede had the ball first and goal from the four-yard line. Woodside put San Antonio ahead 14-10 with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Doctson. The Commanders were aided by three Oklahoma City penalties for 35 yards on their possession. Woodside pulled San Antonio to within 10-7 with a 32-yard touchdown pass to WR Daniel Braverman, culminating a four-play, 90-yard scoring drive. Bethel-Thompson found WR Geremy Davis on a 14-yard touchdown strike to put Oklahoma City ahead 10-0 to cap a nine-play, 83-yard march.

XFL Week 13: Brawlers Drop the Hammer on Omaha Mammoths

May 26, 2022

Omaha, NE - The Philadelphia Brawlers with a 12-yard touchdown catch by WR Travis Fulgham to cap a five-play, 75-yard drive that included a 27-yard reception by WR Sammie Coates and a 24-yard connection to WR Cam Phillips that set up the red-zone score. On Philadelphia’s next possession, RB James Butler came up with a tipped 26-yard toss to the end zone, diving to make the six-point grab on the way to a 14-0 lead. K Andrew Franks hit a 34-yard field goal early in the second quarter before a 22-yard catch and run by WR Antonio Callaway was followed up by an 18-yard toss to TE Nick Truesdell after Omaha came up with just 16 passing yards over the previous 20 minutes of play. But the drive fizzled out after that and Hamilton came back to score a 43-yard field goal, before Phillips was hit on the fly for a 65-yard touchdown catch inside the two-minute mark, giving Philadelphia a 24-3 lead. With 1:28 on the clock, Brawlers LB Edmond Robinson took down RB Charcandrick West, who had no chance to catch a short-hopper, bringing the Mammoths running back to the turf. West took offense to the late hit, charging Robinson and driving him, spine-first, into the turf, which led to both sides rushing to aid their respective teammate amid a crowd of players, coaches and officials. When the dust settled, a handful of unnecessary roughness penalties were handed to each side, while Mammoths DB Robert Priester was ejected for coming off the bench and Brawlers LB Kaelin Burnett was ejected for spitting at an opponent.

K Sergio Castillo added another from 25 yards out to take a 27-4 lead into halftime which Franks turned into 27-7 with a 26-yard field goal coming out the other side of it. Castillo then missed back to back, from 35 and then 40 yards, before hitting from 47 yards to go ahead 30-7. RB Jacques Patrick punched in a dive from the one yard-line following a 17-yard reception by Callaway for Omaha’s first of two too-little, too-late touchdowns, before running the same play again to add a two-point convert, trailing 30-15 with half a quarter to go. And it turned out to be just enough time for Philadelphia to put another touchdown on the board with Butler rattling off a 16-yard touchdown rush to send many in the sparse crowd, announced at an 32,857, filing out early. They missed backup QB Devlin Hodges punching in a keeper from the one yard-line.

XFL Week 13: Breakers Complete come back Against Panthers

May 27, 2022

Detroit, MI - After 54 points scored in regulation, a 60-yard field goal, five two-point conversion attempts, including one in regulation, a fumbled kick return and overtime, the Breakers felt fortunate to walk out of Detroit with a victory over the Oakland Panthers. But to get there, QB Kyle Sloter first had to roll to his left, throw up a duck and hit WR Jonathan Adams, who caught the pass just in time for the Breakers to call timeout with the clock showing one second on the clock. "The quarterback getting hit," Fedora said, "and when he was throwing it, the ball being floated up in the air, that was not planned by any means."

That set up Los Angeles K Taylor Bertolet to nail a 26-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime. For the Panthers, who had possession first, their first attempt was forgettable, ending with a fumbled snap. The Breakers scored on their first possession when Sloter found RB Anthony Jones open in the flat for the first points. The Panthers missed again on their second attempt, then Sloter ran into the end zone on a broken play to secure a 31-27 win in overtime. He finished 15-for-24 for 182 yards with two TDs. "I think, just as a competitor," Sloter said, "you look for those opportunities to help your team win a game, and we had some great play calls there at the end."

Coming out of halftime, Breakers K Bertolet extended Los Angeles’ led to 17-9 with three points of his own before the Panthers began to put together their first sustainable drive of the second half. The Los Angeles defense bowed up at their own 16-yard line and forced Oakland to settle for three one more time at the end of a 16-play drive. With the Breakers leading 17-12 with 1:21 left in the third quarter, the Panthers had to feel good about keeping Fedora’s team within a single score. Their optimism paid off. On the ensuing kickoff, RB Taywan Taylor fumbled the ball on his kick return and the ball was recovered by Oakland inside the Breakers’ half of the field. At the end of the third quarter, the Panthers held the ball on the Los Angeles seven-yard line with third-and-seven to go. RB Stevie Scott later punched in for a touchdown and set the Panthers up for a go-ahead two-point conversion on a pass from QB Paxton Lynch to WR Lance Lenoir with 14:20 left to play. The Panthers led for the first time since there were six minutes left in the first quarter. The lead didn’t last long. Lynch took a screen from the Oakland 42-yard line and found pay dirt to help the Breakers retake a 24-20 lead with 12:12 left to play. But the Panthers wasted no time getting back on the board. They rode RB Reggie Corbin into the red zone and took their second lead in five minutes when RB Cam Scarlett became the second back to rush for a touchdown for the Panthers on a seven-play drive lasting two minutes and 51 seconds. Oakland was back on top, 27-24, with 9:23 left to play. The Oakland defense would not allow another point scored until the last second of regulation.

XFL & IFL Announce Player Personnel Partnership

May 28, 2022

New York, NY - The XFL and the Indoor Football League (IFL) announced a wide-ranging player personnel partnership beginning with the 2023 season. The partnership provides the framework for transferring players between leagues and the opportunity for players released from XFL teams to be transferred to IFL squads. The two leagues will also work together in scheduling joint tryouts and sharing video and game films.

“Our partnership with the IFL is a win across the board,” said Bill Polian, XFL Comissioner. “Not only will the league have access to a consistent pool of highly competitive players who are in game shape, but it will also provide the opportunity for some of our players to continue their development and extend their professional careers.”

“We are extremely excited to be working with the XFL,” said Todd Tryon, Commissioner of the IFL. “This partnership will allow a bigger opportunity for the players of the IFL. Our goal is to create a platform for our players to advance their career on and off the field and this is another step towards that.”

Roughnecks QB Jake Rudock Back on the Bench

May 29, 2022

Houston, TX - From the moment the signing of young prospect Nathan Rourke about a month ago, it always felt like QB Jake Rudock was on borrowed time, despite the proclamations to the contrary by Roughnecks head coach Wade Phillips. And now, the inevitable has occurred. All it took was one more bad game and seemingly one mistake by Rudock for the move to be made. Making his third consecutive start for the injured QB Brock Osweiler, Rudock struggled against a dominant Toronto Jousters defense, completing only seven of 13 passes for 106 yards. He was intercepted once, almost was pilfered a second time, failed to get the Roughnecks into the end zone and was on the bench to end the third quarter, replaced by the youngster Rourke. “I was just looking for a change of pace,” Phillips said following Houston’s 19-14 loss to the Jousters. “I just didn’t feel like we were doing enough on offense. If Jake wasn’t banged up, I probably would have stayed with him a little longer. That played a part in the decision as well. He was fine to go, he played.”

Rourke, despite only taking reserve reps at practice, did an admirable job. He completed 12 of 15 passes for 123 yards. Rourke also gained 31 yards on three carries. He guided the Roughnecks on an eight-play, 93-yard drive, capped by a short touchdown pass to WR Davion Davis late in the fourth quarter, making the score, 16-14. “Coach’s decision,” Rudock said. “As a competitor, I want to be out there on the field. That’s why you play the game. I respect the coach’s decision. He made that call, to give Nate a chance and put us in a position to win. That’s part of sports.”

XFL Week 14: Victor, Enforcers Bully Maulers

May 30, 2022

Chicago, IL - Enforcers RB Darius Victor owns the box. That's what the bowling ball of a running back calls the end zone. "I call myself a box-boy CEO," joked Victor. "Nothing else matters but the box. That's my job." Riding behind the powerful legs of the bruising Victor, the Chicago Enforcers bullied the Pittsburgh Maulers for the team's ninth victory of the year, a convincing, 29-18 win. RB Trey Williams added 66 rushing yards on 12 carries. Enforcers WR KaVontae Turpin continued to show his explosive playmaking ability, catching a shallow cross over the middle and sprinting 24 yards for a touchdown. The Enforcers took control of the game early, marching 46 yards on five plays, capped by a Victor 2-yard run up the middle of the Pittsburgh defense. Chicago's opening touchdown was set up by a big return by WR Cam Echols-Luper and helped by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on the Maulers for tackling him out of bounds. The Maulers answered with a touchdown of their own, a 5-yard run by QB Dwayne Haskins, who finished 3-for-4 for 35 yards on his team's opening drive. However, the Enforcers responded with another scoring drive, capped this time by a 7-yard touchdown run by Victor and never trailed from there.

Trailing by 11 points with just over six minutes left, the Maulers chose to use the XFL's alternative kickoff for the first time this season. Under the rule, teams can go for it on fourth-and-15 from their own 35-yard line instead of executing an onside kick. If they make the play, they get to keep the ball. If they do not convert, the opposing team gets the ball on the 35-yard line. The Maulers managed to convert the play, with Haskins finding WR Jalen McCleskey on an in route for a 17-yard reception. "We were looking for a specific coverage based upon our personnel," head coach Byron Leftwich said. "And when we all saw it, as a staff we said that we were going to have an opportunity to make this, it just depends on if the protection is right, he reads it right and the receiver makes a play. And all three of those components happened." However, they missed a 49-yard field goal attempt eight plays later and the Maulers failed to take advantage of the play.

XFL Week 14: Stallions Stay Unbeaten Thanks to Close-Call Field Goal

May 31, 2022

St. Louis, MO - Was it good? When asked if K Brandon Aubrey's 29-yard field goal that gave his team a 10-9 victory actually went inside the left upright, St. Louis Stallions offensive coordinator Skip Holtz looked to the officials on the field. "They didn't come over and ask me," Holtz said. "All we can do is go with what the officials signaled on the field. He's got a lot better view of it than I do." Regardless of what the coaches believe, the field goal was called good on the field and after DB Josh Shaw picked off Breakers QB Kyle Slother, his third interception of the game, the Stallions sealed yet another close victory. "They've got a great football team," Holtz said. "Larry Fedora does a good job with his team. They're hard-hitting. They're well-coached. They're physical. That is a very talented football team. But as somebody said to me coming off the field, you just got to keep believing."

The Breakers had one last opportunity to take the lead with 15 second left and the ball on the Stallions' 45-yard line. Sloter threw one up for grabs, a toss down the middle of the field intended for WR Johnnie Dixon and Shaw managed to reel it in to seal the game. The St. Louis Stallions stayed undefeated thanks in part to their defense, which racked up three interceptions. "Initially when it left his hands I thought it was too high," Shaw said. "So, I couldn't go up with two hands. So, I went up with one, and someway I was able to come down with it." With WR Victor Bolden Jr. unavailable due to injury, WR Marlon Williams stepped up and made plays as St. Louis' slot receiver. Williams finished with seven catches for 109 yards on 12 targets. "You can't turn the ball over in games like that and expect to win," Fedora said. "Every single one of those was critical. If you do that, you're fighting an uphill battle all the way. We have to do a better job of taking care of the football."

Meanwhile, Stallions starting QB J'Mar Smith also had an uneven performance, finishing 15-for-29 for 183 yards, with a 27-yard touchdown to TE Adrian Hardy. Smith also had an interception and lost a fumble. After his second turnover with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter, Holtz replaced Smith with QB Alex McGough on the next series. However, after a 22-yard run by McGough, he re-injured his left ankle and had to leave the field. Smith returned, but hit his throwing hand on a helmet, wincing in pain as he left the field. With third QB Montell Cozart inactive, Holtz said he would have turned to Williams as his emergency quarterback and once McGough is healthy, expect him and Smith to continue to share snaps. "I've said all along I'm going to play two quarterbacks," Holtz said. "They both deserve to play. They're both talented quarterbacks and they've both won in professional football. We're very fortunate to have two and if anything ever happens to a player, I don't want to put a guy out there that hasn't played in four weeks."

-- (8-5)Breakers 9 - 10 Stallions(13-0)
(LA): QB Sloter - 23/40 251 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB Ellis - 21 carries, 68 yards, 1 TD, TE Cannella - 6 catches, 60 yards, WR Adams - 5 catches, 54 yards, WR Taylor - 4 catches, 76 yards

XFL Week 14: Masoli Throws Touchdown Pass as Monarchs down Roughnecks

June 1, 2022

Detroit, MI - New Roughnecks starter Nathan Rourke pulled Houston to within 26-18 with a one-yard touchdown run with 1:18 remaining and attempted the onside kick with Montreal maintaining possession with 1:16 to play. Houston did get the ball back at its own 49-yard line with 39 seconds remaining. However Rourke’s Hail Mary pass into the end zone on the final play fell incomplete.

RB Alfred Blue pulled Houston to within 18-9 with an eight-yard touchdown run in the third but missed the convert. K Austin Jones had put Montreal ahead 18-3 with a 20-yard field goal in the third. QB Jeremiah Masoli’s 32-yard touchdown strike to WR Naaman Roosevelt in the second staked Montreal into a 15-3 halftime advantage. It was a solid opening half for Masoli, who was 10-of-14 passing for 157 yards and Roosevelt was a favorite target with five catches for 73 yards.

XFL Week 14: Stampede Come from Behind to Beat Omaha Mamoths on 11-point Fourth Quarter

June 1, 2022

Omaha, NE - A fourth-quarter touchdown pass from QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson and K Austin MacGinnis’s fifth field goal of the game powered the Oklahoma City Stampede to a 23-20 win over the Omaha Mammoths. Trailing 20-12, Bethel-Thompson connected with WR Geremy Davis for a 12-yard touchdown pass and then completed the play with a two-point conversion toss to TE Donald Parham to tie the game at 4:37 of the fourth. MacGinnis then connected from 34 yards out for his fifth field goal of the game and a 23-20 lead with just under four minutes to play. QB Devlin Hodges only threw for 90 yards as Omaha fell to 3-11. Bethel-Thompson threw for almost 300 yards but was intercepted three times.

WR Tanner McEvoy took the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Mammoths a 20-9 lead. Later in the quarter, McEvoy had an 81-yard punt return negated on an illegal block penalty. MacGinnis kicked a 49-yard field goal for the only other scoring of the third quarter as the Mammoths took a 20-12 lead into the fourth. The Stampede opened the scoring on a 46-yard MacGinnis field goal, but it was the Mammoths who went into halftime with a 13-9 lead.

XFL Week 14: Ground Game and the Defense Defeat the Baltimore Brigade

June 2, 2022

Memphis, TN - Leave it to truth-teller Memphis Showboats head coach Todd Haley to provide the unvarnished version of how his team played. "Thankfully, there are no style points for how you win a football game," Haley said. "Because it was not pretty in a lot of different areas." Yep, Haley's right and while Canton might not request the game film for this one, Showboat's grimy, 13-3 win over the Baltimore Brigade keeps open the possibility of his team playing there in the postseason. Memphis QB Ryan Willis wasn't his best self but he did a good enough job of managing the game in the heavy rain. Willis threw for just 98 yards on 12-for-21 passing with one touchdown and an interception. Haley took responsibility for Willis' interception in the fourth quarter, saying he should have run the ball to keep the chains moving although Willis' offering bounced off the hands of WR Rashard Davis. Willis hit WR Derrick Dillon for a 7-yard touchdown to give the Showboats a 10-0 lead over Baltimore. "He did enough for us to win, and that's the key," Haley said. "He's a competitive guy who's into it, ran his team today and got us the victory."

Baltimore's offense never even reached the red zone and the Brigade's only score came on a 44-yard field goal by K Justin Medlock after the opening drive of the second half. Rookie QB Benji Bahar was mostly ineffective, completing 19 of 34 passes for 159 yards with no touchdown passes and an interception. Bahar was sacked four times. Baltimore offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin said he didn't run Bahar more because of lack of depth at quarterback, not wanting to risk putting the athletic signal-caller in harm's way. Memphis DL Mike Scott, who finished with two sacks, said he had one goal in mind facing someone like Bahar for the first time, make him feel you. "We wanted to hit him as hard as we can," Scott said. "Put nothing but pressure on him and make sure he feels us at all times."

-- (3-10)Brigade 3 - 13 Showboats(4-9)
(BAL): QB Bahar - 19/34 159 yards, 1 INT, 6 carries, 49 yards, RB Whaley - 11 carries, 31 yards, WR Ratliff-Williams - 4 catches, 30 yards

XFL Week 14: BattleHawks Fall Short

June 2, 2022

Orlando, FL - The Charlotte BattleHawks proved they could play with the Orlando Apollos for three quarters. Unfortunately, there are no moral victories for coming close in professional sports, the BattleHawks came up short, losing 31-21 to the Apollos before 32,933 spectators. Charlotte failed to generate a point over the final 28 minutes.

Things didn’t begin well for Charlotte despite gaining two first downs on their opening series. But when they were forced to punt, a high snap sailed over the head of K Seth Small, giving the Apollos possession at the Charlotte 33. Five plays later, including a 12-yard pass to WR Jordan Marshall, QB Garrett Gilbert’s shovel pass to WR Lucky Whitehead opened the scoring. The BattleHawks, to their credit, kept their composure. On the Apollos’ next drive, RB Mark Walton fumbled after getting hit by LB Micah Awe. The ball was recovered by DB Montae Nicholson, who rambled in for the tying touchdown. Orlando engineered another impressive drive to complete the first quarter. The series began with a 20-yard pass to WR Donte Moncrief. Two plays later, Gilbert found Marshall for 11 yards. Then, following a pass interference penalty and an 11-yard reception by WR Charles Johnson, K Elliott Fry kicked a 22-yard field goal on the opening play of the second quarter. After a missed field goal, the BattleHawks engineered a four-play, 75-yard drive to take their first lead. Fry’s 34-yard field goal in the final minute of the quarter sent the teams to halftime tied 14-14.

Montreal came out quickly to begin the second half with QB AJ McCarron directing his team on a four-play, 68-yard drive. The series began with a 39-yard pass to WR Marcell Ateman. RB LaDarius Galloway then gained 19 yards to the 10. Following a short run by RB Spencer Ware, McCarron connected with TE Ben Koyack in the back of the end zone, giving the BattleHawks a 21-14 lead. But that was all Charlotte accomplished offensively in the quarter with the visitors failing to generate another first down in the period.

The Apollos tied the score following a four-play, 64-yard drive that included a 23-yard reception by WR Dillon Mitchell. Following a 13-yard pass to Moncrief, WR Donteea Dye took advantage of a breakdown in the secondary for the touchdown. As the quarter came to a conclusion, Gilbert led the Apollos on a nine-play, 82-yard drive. A 44-yard pass to Moncrief put the Apollos in scoring position and on the second play of the fourth quarter, RB Sola Olateju scored on the short run, giving Orlando a 28-21 lead.

XFL Week 14: Breakers Roll Past Panthers

June 3, 2022

Columbus, OH - Ghosts QB Case Cookus needed some air after galloping 79 yards for a touchdown. His meandering run through a tired Oakland Panthers defense with 5:19 left put a stamp on a dominating performance in the Columbus Ghosts' 46-24 victory. "In college or professional football that's by far my farthest run," Cookus said. How hot was Cookus? Early in the fourth quarter, Cookus shook off a Oakland would-be pass rusher, stepped up in the pocket and hit TE Pro Wells for a pretty, 51-yard strike between two Panthers for a touchdown. RB Matt Colburn also had a big day offensively for the Ghosts, totaling 97 scrimmage yards and two scores. For the Panthers, a healthy QB Paxton Lynch returned to the starting lineup and finished 27-for-40 for 251 yards with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Lynch also lost a fumble at the goal line. DB Channing Stribling got another takeaway in the second half on an out route intended for Panthers WR Lance Lenoir Jr. Stribling said his league-leading tenth interception was set up by film study during the week as he baited Lynch into thinking the route was open. "Watching film, I noticed they like to run a lot of out routes," Stribling said. "I was telling our players that you've got to let them catch a couple and get comfortable. So, I kind of let them catch a couple and get into a rhythm a little bit. And once I see a three-step and open up, I'm already up out of there."

-- (2-11)Panthers 24 - 46 Ghosts(6-7)
(OAK): QB Lynch - 27/40 251 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 7 carries, 20 yards, 1 TD, RB Scott - 16 carries, 64 yards, TE Pettway - 7 catches, 97 yards, 1 TD, WR Lenoir - 8 catches, 64 yards

XFL Week 15: Ghosts Survive a 'Clunker,' Escape with Win

June 6, 2022

Pittsburgh, PA - Special teams for the Washington Valor put them in a position to win the game early on. However, late-game miscues in the all-important third phase of the game led to Washington's demise as they once again found a way to lose, this one a 17-16 setback to the New York Guardians. Valor K Ramiz Ahmed pushed a 49-yard field goal wide right with 58 seconds left that would have won the game. Ahmed also missed an extra point, resulting in the one-point loss. "We came up short," Valor head coach Kirby Wilson said. "We needed one more play and we just didn't get it. That's the game of football. But I'm proud of the men, the fight they showed from start to finish."

With Washington leading and controlling the game most of the way, New York DB Ahmad Dixon made the game-changing play for the Guardians. On first-and-10 from New York's 35-yard line, Dixon came free up the middle on a safety blitz, blowing up the handoff between QB Cardale Jones and RB Madre London in the backfield. DL Freedom Akinmoladun recovered the fumble. On the next play, RB Matthew Colburn scooted 51 yards for the score, giving New York a 17-16 lead with 4:45 left. "It's really just everybody understanding their assignment, between the offensive line and the receivers," Colburn said about his play. "Going above and beyond and blocking downfield. The chemistry has increased the last couple weeks, and you can really see it on the field."

Valor WR Isiah Hennie took a big hit at the end of a 10-yard reception by New York DB Cody Brown that had him spitting out a loose tooth on the sideline. "I lost one, but it's just a wisdom tooth though," Hennie told his teammate on the sideline. Hennie impressively remained in the game but will need a dentist to fix the missing tooth. "He made a great play along the sideline to set up the touchdown and keep the drive going," Wilson said. "So, hat's off to him. I'm sorry about the lost tooth. But pound for pound he might be one of the toughest members of this football team. I couldn't ask for a better guy. I'm really proud of him"

XFL Week 15: Fleet Manhandle Mistake-Prone Dragons

June 7, 2022

Detroit, MI - Kaboom. That's the sound of the Seattle Dragons imploding in 17-6 loss to the San Diego Fleet. The Dragons played a mistake-filled game, laying the groundwork for a convincing win by the Fleet. The game was all but over after the first half as the Fleet dominated on defense. San Diego finished with four takeaways, three sacks and 14 tackles for loss. LB Jerod Fernandez led the charge, finishing with eight combined tackles (including two for a loss), a sack and two forced fumbles. "It feels great," Fernandez said. "It's an opportunity to play more games, and an opportunity to go out and try and win a championship. And that's what we're going to do."

In all, the Dragons were called for 13 penalties for 109 yards, including an unsportsmanlike penalty on Todd Haley when he threw his call sheet on the field after a roughing-the-passer call on San Diego DL Kamilo Tongamoa was reversed. "We just did too many things to beat ourselves in this football game," Haley said. "That's really what it comes down to."

The Dragons could not take advantage of San Diego's mistakes and had trouble with their own head-scratching errors. That included a roughing the punter call on Vinny Papale that extended San Diego's first scoring drive and a WR Rashard Davis fumble after a long catch near midfield. That turnover led to another score for the Fleet, a 26-yard field goal by Bertolet, extending the Fleet lead to 9-0. Just before halftime, Seattle had a promising drive stalled by back-to-back unsportsmanlike calls on OL Jarron Jones, who had to be restrained from going after one of the coaches on the sideline. The Dragons finished with 352 total yards but they turned the ball over on three consecutive drives, which led to 10 points for the Fleet, who staked out a 17-point lead they would never relinquish.

XFL Week 15: Turpin's Heroics Lift Enforcers over Steel

June 8, 2022

Detroit, MI - The Chicago Enforcers are the top rushing team in the XFL. However, with the Birmingham Steel slowing them down up front, the Enforcers turned to WR Darrius Shepherd and the passing game. Turpin finished with eight catches for 99 receiving yards, including the game-winner, a 17-yard touchdown on a fade route that gave the Enforcers a 25-23 win over the Steel. Chicago WR KaVonte Turpin led the Enforcers with eight receptions for 99 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Birmingham WR Joe Walker led the Steel offense with seven catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns. "I'm just proud of our team for finding a way to win," Enforcers head coach Lovie Smith said. "It looked kind of bleak for a bit. I felt it on the sidelines. But when we needed to stop them, and we needed to make some plays offensively, we did it."

After leading most of the game, Chicago trailed by four points with 6:37 remaining after a 25-yard field goal by K Cole Murphy. But QB Luis Perez engineered the decisive drive after a big return by WR Cam Echols-Luper put Chicago near midfield. On second-and-5 from Michigan's 17-yard line, Turpin converted to a go-route against press coverage, beating his man over the top for the score. "When your number is called, you have to make plays," Turpin said. "Coach Smith got us involved in the passing game today, gave us an opportunity to show what we can do."

Turpin continues to look like the most explosive player in the league, taking a 71-yard punt return for a score with just over 10 minutes left in the first half. "Coach Smith told me at the beginning of this game that this will probably be the day that you get one," Turpin said. "So, I just told him I was going to be patient back there. I hit the hole one time and just back outside, just trying to be playmaker for the team, basically."

XFL Week 15: Stallions Lose First Game of Season

June 10, 2022

St. Louis, MO - The St. Louis Stallions lose their first game of the XFL season, falling to the Baltimore Brigade 17-15. The first half of the game saw both defenses step up, with neither team giving up a touchdown in the first half. Stampede K Brandon Aubrey kicked two field goals in the first half, while Renegades K Nick Vogel kicked three, giving the Renegades a 9-6 lead at the half. In the second half, Stallions QB J’Mar Smith was called for an intentional grounding penalty, resulting in a safety to give the Renegades an 11-6 lead. Later in the third quarter, Smith would find TE Adrian Hardy for a 33 yard touchdown to give the Stallions an 12-11 lead but the Renegades would come back in the fourth quarter with QB Landry Jones connecting with WR Isaiah Zuber for the touchdown, putting the Renegades back in front 17-12. After a Aubrey field goal to cut the lead to two points, the Stampede would have the ball for a chance to win but Smith threw an interception to DB Micah Abernathy, sealing the game for the Renegades.

Interesting Wrinkle added for Maulers-Panthers Game

June 12, 2022

New York, NY - The XFL will be completing its 16-week regular season this week with the two worst teams, the Pittsburgh Maulers and Oakland Panthers, facing off against each other. Typically an undesirable matchup, the XFL added extra incentive to win the game. Commissioner Bill Polian decided the winner of that game would get the first pick in every round of the 2023 XFL Draft. That decision prevented either team from tanking to get the first pick. "We're trying to win," Pittsburgh Maulers head coach Duce Staley said. "That's what we want to do. We want to win. And that's how we're going to approach it."

XFL Week 16: Panthers earn No. 1 pick in XFL draft with 33-21 win over Pittsburgh in Finale

June 13, 2022

Detroit, MI - The Oakland Panthers saved one of their best performances for last. In a battle for the rights to the No. 1 overall pick and the first selection in every round of the 2023 XFL draft, the Panthers bested the Pittsburgh Maulers, 33-21, in both teams' finale. "After the ups and downs of this season, it's nice to finish out with a win," Panthers coach Jeff Fisher said. "This season's not based on if you make the playoffs next week. We had a lot of other goals and other things we wanted to accomplish. The No. 1 goal was that everybody associated with our program got better."

Defensively, the Panthers surrendered 350 yards to Pittsburgh but forced three turnovers. QB Vad Lee started for the Maulers, finishing 12-for-22 for 157 yards with two scores and a pick but was eventually swapped for QB Roland Rivers, who had 123 yards and a touchdown on 11-for-14 passing. After recovering a muffed punt in the red zone, Oakland struck first as QB Paxton Lynch found Hyman for a 4-yard score. On Pittsburgh's ensuing drive, RB Mikey Daniel fumbled on fourth-and-1, which was recovered by Panthers DB Cory Rahman for a 63-yard scoop-and-score. Oakland took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter. The lead grew after WR Lance Lenoir Jr. caught a wide-open 3-yard touchdown. The Maulers finally answered with under four minutes left in the first half as K Ramiz Ahmed nailed a 23-yard field goal. On Oakland's last drive of the half, Lynch tossed his fourth interception of the season after leading the Panthers on an eight-play, 39-yard drive. Time ran out before Pittsburgh could cut into Oakland's lead, leaving the score 21-3 at halftime. The Panthers added a 35-yard field goal by K Cole Murphy in the middle of the third quarter. However, the Maulers crawled back into the game after a 74-yard, four-play drive ended with Rivers finding TE Matt Seybert for a 6-yard score. A failed three-point conversation attempt kept the score 24-9. Pittsburgh then forced an Oakland punt and Lee reentered, eventually throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to cut the Panthers' lead to 24-15. Lee then attempted a 2-point conversion but the Maulers were again stopped. Oakland ended Pittsburgh's 12-0 run after TE Marcus Baugh caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. Still, a missed extra point by Murphy and another touchdown pass from Lee made the score 30-21 with under three minutes to play. Instead of an onside kick, the Maulers tried a fourth-and-12 play, but didn't convert. Murphy then hit a 44-yarder, and an interception by Jameson Houston sealed the victory. "Yeah, we finished this season with a win, I want to win it all next year," Fisher said after he was asked if he planned to return to Oakland next season. "We're going to improve."

XFL Week 16: Defense Comes Up Big As Brigade Blowout Los Angeles

June 14, 2022

Baltimore, MD - The Baltimore Brigade only ran five plays on their opening drive before being forced to punt in Breakers’ territory. Disaster struck for Breakers’ starting quarterback for the night Zach Smith as he threw an interception on the second play of the game. One of the league’s best linebackers, Donald Payne, was the man responsible as he took it back 12 yards for the touchdown to give Baltimore a 7-0 lead. Five plays into their second drive of the game, Smith would once again turn the ball over for Los Angeles giving the Brigade the ball at their own 48-yard line. This time it was DB Jeremiah Johnson catching the interception the flip the possession arrow to Houston. Each team would trade three punts each before Baltimore would establish a solid offensive drive thanks to a short 30-yard punt giving Baltimore the ball at Los Angeles’ 44-yard line. It was RB Benny LeMay who was able to get a nice 14-yard run and seven-yard catch before K Nick Vogel connected a 35-yard field goal to put Baltimore up 10-0 in the second quarter. After another punt, Baltimore continued their momentum on offense with QB Kenji Bahar connecting on four of five passes on the drive to set up another Vogel field goal from 36 yards. This score would give Baltimore a 13-0 lead at halftime.

The third quarter saw Los Angeles holding on to the football for a good portion of the 15-minute quarter. A quick three and out is how the Breakers started their first drive, but it would turn quickly in their favor. Baltimore DB Will Likely fumbled on the punt return that was recovered by Los Angeles TE Sal Cannella as the Breakers would start their next drive at the 28-yard line. Seven plays later, a promising drive for the Breakers would end with an attempted 33-yard field goal by Taylor Bertolet. In a night that never really seemed to have gone Los Angeles’ way, XFL sack leader DL Chris Odom found his hands on the ball with a blocked field goal that was returned Johnson 77 yards for the touchdown. The Brigade were now in full control with a 20-0 lead in the third quarter. Los Angeles’ next drive went much better as QB Shea Patterson was able to drive the Breakers down the field to finally get points on the board. Thanks to Bertolet’s leg, he redeemed himself with a 50-yard field goal to see Los Angeles down 20-3 late in the third quarter. Baltimore’s next offensive drive seemed promising and even saw Bahar connect with WR Teo Redding on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Unfortunately for the Brigade, Redding was called for offensive pass interference that omitted the play. Three plays later, Bahar tried for play-action but fumbled on the fake handoff that was recovered by Breakers DL Shareef Miller. Five more punts would occur before Baltimore was able to seal the win with a LeMay 13-yard run on third down and four to close the game. Bahar would kneel the ball twice to give Baltimore their second straight win.

XFL Week 16: Enforcers Hold off Ghosts' Late Charge

June 17, 2022

Chicago, IL - Enforcers RB Trey Williams knows what he can do and while teammate RB Darius Victor rightly has received the lion's share of the notoriety, the shifty Williams has been a steady wingman throughout the season. Well, Williams got to step into the spotlight in his team's 26-23 victory over the Columbus Ghosts in the teams' final game of the regular season. Trey Williams had a big day for the Enforcers', rushing 14 times for 114 yards in their 26-23 victory. It's the second time Williams has surpassed 100 yards on the ground against the Ghosts. In a Week 3 24-16 win over Columbus, Williams totaled 110 rushing yards. "It's just consistency," Williams said about his effort. "Every week we go to work and we practice our butts off. It pays off and it shows up on the field."

Chicago OL Terry Poole doused head coach Lovie Smith with a Gatorade tub filled with water afterward. The Enforcers jumped out to a 14-3 lead on the strength of Williams' touchdown run and a pretty, 16-yard throw by QB DeShone Kizer on a back-shoulder delivery to WR Alonzo Moore for a touchdown. Moore had a huge day, hauling in seven catches for 84 yards and a pair of scores. Sandwiched in between those two Chicago touchdowns was a K Luis Aguilar 38-yard field goal for Columbus. The Ghosts added a QB Case Cookus touchdown throw to WR Jordan Suell for a 3-yard score just before the half, then took a 17-14 lead on the opening drive of the second half on a 19-yard screen pass from Cookus to WR Chris Rowland. However, on the ensuing possession, Chicago grabbed the lead back for good, driving 75 yards on six plays, with Kizer finding Victor in the flat for a 2-yard touchdown pass. Kizer added another touchdown pass to Moore in the fourth quarter, this one a 25-yard touch throw on a corner route for a 26-17 lead. But the Ghosts made one final push. After a league-record 85-yard punt from his own end zone by Chicago P Brock Miller, the Ghosts marched 90 yards for a score, capped by RB Matthew Colburn scooting 15 yards untouched for a touchdown. The Ghosts went for a three-point conversion to tie the game from the 10-yard line, but Chicago DB Paris Ford intercepted the ball in the end zone. However, the Ghosts converted the alternate kickoff from their own 33-yard line due to a penalty for illegal use of hands call on Chicago DB David Rivers. But Cookus was intercepted on a deep throw by Chicago DB Shalom Luani three players later, sealing the victory for the Enforcers.

XFL Week 16: Stallions Hold on in Memphis

June 18, 2022

Memphis, TN - St. Louis QB Alex McGough threw for a team-high 183 yards, a touchdown and an interception after entering the game on the final snap of the first quarter. McGough also contributed on the ground, carrying the ball 11 times for 30 yards and a touchdown. Despite allowing three scores in the second half, the Stallions limited Memphis to just 68 yards rushing and held the Showboats to just 2-for-7 on fourth-down attempts. After forcing a three-and-out to open the game, St. Louis’ offense took over inside its own 10-yard line following a 54-yard punt from Memphis P Brandon Wright. The Stallions advanced to their 42-yard line before LB TJ Neal picked off QB J’Mar Smith’s pass, giving the Showboats plus field position at the 44-yard line. St. Louis’ defense allowed just one first down on the ensuing possession before turning the Showboats over on downs when DL Keyshon Camp and Johnny Newsome combined to sack QB Ryan Willis for a 7-yard loss. Despite a high snap on the following offensive play, Smith rolled to his right before finding a wide-open TE Sage Surratt for a 44-yard gain down the right sideline. Smith, however, fumbled just two plays later for St. Louis’ second turnover of the first quarter, setting up the Showboats at their 21-yard line. The Showboats again failed to turn a turnover into points, punting after another three-and-out. After 24 minutes of scoreless action to open the game, St. Louis capped off a 13-play, 90-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from McGough to WR Marlon Williams to make it 7-0 with 5:37 left in the first half. Memphis failed to pick up a first down on its ensuing offensive possession as Wright’s 63-yard punt sailed into the end zone for a touchback. St. Louis took over at its own 20-yard line with 3:42 remaining in the half and doubled its lead eight plays later when McGough plunged into the end zone from 17 yards out to make it 14-0 with 57 seconds remaining in the first half.

The Showboats snatched early momentum in the second half when LB Anthony Butler intercepted McGough’s pass at the 48-yard line but the Showboats failed to capitalize when LB Scooby Wright sacked QB Brady White on fourth-and-9 from the Stallions’ 33-yard line. Following a St. Louis three-and-out, Memphis got on the board when Willis connected with Dillon for a 75-yard touchdown to trim the Showboats' deficit to 14-6. Fresh off its opening score, Memphis opted for the alternate kickoff, which is a fourth-and-12 from its own 33-yard line. LB DeMarquis Gates sacked Willis on the fourth-down attempt, giving the Stallions’ offense the ball at the 18-yard line. St. Louis and Memphis traded turnovers on their next two offensive possessions, which included an interception in the end zone from Hayes. Just four plays after Hayes’ interception, Memphis’ special teams brought the Showboats within two points when WR Rashard Davis returned a punt 74 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-12 with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Stallions answered Memphis’ score on their next offensive possession, needing just five plays to travel 52 yards to extend St. Louis’ lead to 21-12 with 13:00 left in the fourth quarter. Marable carried the load on the swift scoring drive, ripping off a carry of 18 yards to open the drive before pushing his way into the end zone for a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Memphis scored its third touchdown of the second half on its next drive, capping off the 12-play, 68-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Willis to TE De’Quan Hampton trimming the deficit to 21-18 with 7:17 remaining. “I’m really proud of what these players have been able to accomplish,” said St. Louis head coach Skip Holtz. “The joy of coaching in this league has been the relationships and getting to see these young men grow. One of our main goals at the beginning of the season was to win every game, but our main goal was to get to Canton. That’s where all the greats are. Some players have been there before, but for the guys who have not, it’ll be a special experience.”

-- (0-0)Stallions 21 - 18 Showboats(0-0)
(STL): QB McGough - 14/25 183 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 10 carries, 30 yards, 1 TD, RB Scarbrough - 10 carries, 51 yards, RB Marable - 8 carries, 47 yards, 1 TD, 4 catches, 39 yards, WR Mitchell - 3 catches, 60 yards

Jeff Fisher Honors Father as Panthers' Win Is Extra Special

June 19, 2022

Memphis, TN - We're No. 1. Yes, the Oakland Panthers finished amongst the bottom dwellers in the XFL this season. However, with a 33-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers, the Panthers and head coach Jeff Fisher can at least take solace that the win earned the team the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. After a late rule change, the winner between the Panthers and the Maulers earned the No. 1 overall pick next year, along with the first pick in every round. "It makes a lot of sense," Fisher said. "It rewards you. It's nice to win this game, so when the time comes we'll have the pick - and so on throughout the draft."

With the victory, the Panthers finished 2-14 on the year while the Maulers ended their season at 1-15. Fisher also honored his father, Roger Fisher, on Father's Day. Since the start of the XFL season, Fisher had been wearing his hat backward in homage to his father, who passed away in October 2020. "My dad shortly before he passed asked me if I ever was going to coach again," Fisher said. "And I said, 'I don't know. But if I do, I will coach every snap with my hat on backwards in your honor.' That's why I put it on backwards to start the season."

Stallions Eye Trophy, But Breakers in Way

June 20, 2022

St. Louis, MO - After watching his team suffer its first loss this season two weeks ago against the Baltimore Brigade, then witnessing a ragged win over the Showboats in his team's final game of the regular season, Holtz would like to see the Stallions from earlier this year get back on track. With St. Louis clinching a berth in the XFL playoffs a month ago, Holtz chalks up his team's late-season struggles to his inexperience dealing with this new situation for the first time in his 34 years of coaching. "It was unique to go play those games that, I don't want to say they were irrelevant, but won't change the fact of what we need to go do next week," Holtz said. "I think we'll get a much different attention. I think we'll get a much different perspective and I think we'll get much more focus going into this week than we had in the last two."

The Stallions have defeated the Breakers twice this season, so they have a good idea of what to expect, according to LB DeMarquis Gates. "Just when my number is called and plays need to be made, I just try and go out and make them," Gates said when asked about his production this season. "It feels good to be rewarded for it, for all the effort and hard work that you put in. But we're just trying to get to that championship. That's going to be the best reward at the end of the day, to bring home that trophy."

The Breakers look to get back to their winning ways after a 20-3 drubbing at the hands of the Brigade over the weekend. Los Angeles head coach Larry Fedora chose to rest QB Kyle Sloter, one of the leading passers in the XFL this season, along with a couple of other starters last week in preparation for Saturday's playoff contest. "We're going to find out this week in practice what we're made of," Fedora said. "And whether or not we're the team we think we are, or the team we showed tonight."

August 17, 2022

Palmer has spent over 15 years on the gridiron as a consultant for elite quarterbacks and as an NFL QB. He will report to Doug Whaley, Senior Vice President, Player Personnel. In this role, Palmer will work with the coaching staff from each XFL team to create a thoughtful and advanced quarterback development program. By combining the physical therapy, strength training, and position coaching from each team into one program, XFL QBs will develop a deeper understanding of their game than ever before. Through the months of September to December, the XFL QBs will work with Palmer and focus on movement efficiency and throwing mechanics. In addition, the XFL QBs will be provided with an actionable plan for continuous development opportunities throughout the offseason and establish consistent remote consulting with Palmer and his team.

"Jordan is one of the top quarterback consultants in the entire sport of football, helping QBs refine and strengthen their physical, mental, and emotional skills to reach their greatest potential. Jordan works with some of the most recognizable young quarterbacks in the NFL - Joe Burrow and Josh Allen, among others - and it'll be great to have his imprint on our players as they further advance their professional development. Jordan was also an early advocate for using technology for training and performance improvement, which aligns with our commitment to innovation. January 15, 2023

Montreal, ONTARIO, CANADA - The ownership of the Montreal Jousters franchise has been transferred to the XFL. Mario Cecchini has been appointed the team's interim President and will lead the management of the organization's day-to-day business operations under the direction and supervision of the league office. General Manager Danny Maciocia continues to focus on the important work of building the team's roster for the upcoming 2023 season. The league has initiated an accelerated and formal sales process, which is being led by its investment banking partner, Park Lane, a leading sports-focused advisory firm whose clients include major league sports properties around the world. Multiple parties have already expressed serious interest in purchasing the Jousters, including individuals, groups and businesses that reside or operate in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec.

This step concludes the team's association with the estate of the late Sid Spiegel and Gary Stern. The XFL wants to express its deep gratitude for their stewardship of the Jousters. Sid Spiegel and Gary Stern purchased the Montreal Alouettes in 2020 at a critical time in its history. They put in place a strong leadership team on both the business and football sides of the franchise. Following Sid's sad passing in 2021, his estate and Gary continued the mission to deliver winning and entertaining football. The franchise is stronger for all these contributions, a fact which is reflected in the interest currently being shown in the Jousters' future. The XFL would also like to thank the Jousters' staff, players and coaches for their continuing professionalism, dedication and hard work and, of course, the Jousters' fans for their ongoing support.

Arena Football League Prepares Comeback in 2024

February 1, 2023

New York, NY - The Arena Football League is back. Or it will be in 2024. The professional indoor football league that went dormant in 2007 has a new set of owners, and it hopes to offer a new brand of ball along with everything that made the AFL fun. “I think that there is a need for an indoor-style league, playing in the spring, which is not the time when the NFL is playing,” said Travelle Gaines, the league’s president of player development. “And I just think that from the research that we've done, there's so many people that are still so interested in the game and a lot of the teams. We have huge fan bases still, and our social media accounts, which aren't active, we get literally mentions, DMs every day, asking to bring back the league or buy apparel or things like that. So there's definitely a need for it. There's a fan base. So we're really excited to help feed that fan base.”

The AFL began play in 1987, and during its 18 seasons, it featured as many as 19 teams and as few as four. Celebrity owners, like Philadelphia Soul co-owner Jon Bon Jovi, helped popularize the league, but it never could financially recover from a canceled season in 2005. The new AFL will feature 16 franchises that will be rolled out over the next year, according to Gaines. He also says the league will be a mix of new clubs and previous teams. While he wouldn’t say who the new owners are, Gaines said they will be a diverse group. “We will have some female owners involved, that we've already had some great discussions with, and they're super excited to be involved,” Gaines said. “We want to be a league that people can dream about being a part of, whether it's from a playing standpoint or if it's from an ownership or coaching standpoint. So we want to embrace people that are talented and want a chance.”

According to Gaines, Lee Hutton III will be commissioner of the new AFL, making him the first Black commissioner of a U.S. pro sports league. Gaines also said Tuo Clark will serve as the league’s president of entertainment. Gaines said the new AFL hopes to become a feeder league that sends talent to the NFL. The indoor season will run from the week after the NFL Draft to the first week of NFL training camps, so the AFL can be an option for players who’ve been cut from NFL rosters to keep working on their games. “We're not trying to compete with the NFL,” Gaines said. “We want to be a great partner with the NFL, but we do want to have a place where players can come and be great.”

Pass holders also will have the opportunity to participate in challenges to earn additional points and level up to higher tier passes.

XFL and ESPN Announce Debut for Original Docuseries Player 54: Chasing the XFL Dream

February 5, 2023

New York, NY - The XFL announced the debut of its original, nine-part docuseries, Player 54: Chasing the XFL Dream, in partnership with broadcast partner ESPN. Directed by Peter Berg, the series follows the creation of the League under new ownership and highlights the unique stories and development of its players and coaches throughout the entire season. With 32 teams, 1600 players, 300 coaches, Player 54 is a visual manifestation of the League's motto: where dreams meet opportunity. The original series takes fans behind the scenes of what it takes to grow a league, showcasing the human stories that exist within the XFL on and off the field. It is a character-driven look at the inspiring, unconventional, and even heartbreaking journeys of the players and head coaches whose professional aspirations are just beginning or getting a second chance. "The opportunity to use our partnership with ESPN to showcase these dynamic stories and demonstrate the XFL's potential is a pivotal aspect of our mission," said Vince McMahon Owner. "Player 54 is the culmination of many of the things that make the XFL special, but, most importantly, it focuses on our players and coaches, the soul and heartbeat of our league. Since the beginning, we've been committed to elevating these players, providing them with a platform to share their stories, cultivate their individual brands, and establish themselves as professional athletes. This docuseries is a powerful tool in telling these athletes narratives, connecting with our fans, and building a 'League of Tomorrow'."

"Player 54 is a deeply personal reality for me," said Dwayne Johnson, Owner. "There are 53 players on an NFL roster. I was number 54. I was good, but not good enough. I was ready, I was hungry, and I waited for that NFL phone call that never came. I never got that shot to prove myself and that seminal moment in my life put a chip on my shoulder that has never and will never go away. Years later, life has brought me to the XFL and I'm grateful to share my experience with our players all of whom have that same chip on their shoulders. I hope everyone enjoys watching the XFL process as much I've enjoyed this 'life comes full circle' ride."

XFL to Hold First-Ever College Draft

February 10, 2023

New York, NY - The XFL announced details for its first-ever College Draft. The 3-round traditional draft takes place on February 22. Head Coaches and General Managers for all thirty-two XFL teams will remotely draft the rights to 96 players who are eligible to join professional football. The XFL will provide real-time coverage of the 2023 College Draft through its social media channels on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. To allow for the increased number of players, XFL team rosters expand from 55 to 90 players during the offseason. Drafted rookies will be placed on XFL rosters with players who finish the 2023 season on active and reserve lists. All players who sign an XFL contract, including players who remain under contract from the 2023 season, will have an "NFL Out" until the conclusion of Week 16 of the NFL season.

"We are building the XFL for long-term success and our first-ever College Draft demonstrates our clear focus on building winning teams for 2023, 2024 and beyond," said Russ Brandon, XFL President. "The XFL will continue to search for and evaluate the best players to join our league. We are excited to see who the next XFL star will be to turn an opportunity with the XFL into a springboard for success. Conducting our inaugural College Draft shows that the XFL is committed to providing these talented players an alternative route to pursue their professional football dreams."

XFL Announces Bolt6 as Official Instant Replay Partner

New York, NY - The XFL announced Bolt6, an innovative sports software developer, as its Official Instant Replay Partner. Bolt6's industry-leading technology will capture all the game-day angles and make them centrally available thanks to its new collaborative and infinitely scalable replay platform, making the XFL the first American football league to utilize a fully cloud-based replay system. Bolt6 will be used by departments across the XFL including football operations, officiating, health and safety, and broadcasting - to leverage its real-time video capture to make key decisions on the sidelines and in the booth. 'Tenacious' rush-end James Vaughters Returns to XFL for Fun and to Win

February 13, 2023

Chicago, IL - James Vaughters knows exactly what he brings to the football field. And there’s no way to stop it from happening if you’re the enemy, which is why the Chicago Enforcers are thrilled to have him back in their XFL stable. “‘Aggression’ is the one word that I would use,” said Vaughters. “‘Tenacious’ that’s a good word, too. ‘Resilient’ it’s a good word, as well. I mean, I don’t think I’ve ever really had the opportunity to not play that way, if that makes sense. I’ve always gotten coached or coaches have always said that my greatest strength is my violence, intelligence and effort, and I think that you have to be able to do all those things with aggression and football to be for me, at least good.”

The Enforcers are banking on him to be at least good in his XFL comeback after honing his craft for the last three years in the NFL. Fact is they’re seeing Vaughters as a cornerstone of the defense during the upcoming campaign and the 6-foot-2, 250lb Chicago native intends to be that guy after three NFL stops with the Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers, with whom he combined to appear in 27 games, posting 33 tackles and 2.5 sacks, but was never tapped on the shoulder to be a starter. “I was really a bit of a reserve player playing when other guys got hurt,” said Vaughters of his time in the NFL. “So I think that being able to come back up as someone that maybe has a little bit more favor and an opportunity to earn time to play a lot is something I look forward to. Something that a lot of guys who play football, college, pro and high school football always are seeking the opportunity to really see what it feels like to to be favored on a weekly basis and be a starter on a weekly basis and I look forward to that and hopefully, that will feel a lot different than the last time I was here. So I’m thankful that I was able to come here the first time around and enjoy the game in a way that I wasn’t necessarily sure was possible when I was going through the uphill battle that I began to understand that I was going to have as a professional.” Simply put, he’s back with the Enforcers because he wants to win and have fun doing it.

2023 Preview - After reaching the XFL playoffs last year and falling just short against eventual champion St. Louis, the Breakers have retooled with a new offensive coordinator and a new starting quarterback and are poised to compete for the title in 2023. They return their two best wide receivers in Jonathan Adams and Marquis Lee. Lee and Adams will be joined in the passing attack by a pair of TEs EJ Bibbs and Sage Surratt who will contend for the best position group in the league. QBs McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Aqeel Glass will have to take full advantage of the veteran receivers early in the regular season. But Bethel-Thompson, a former Canadian Football League quarterback who passed for more than 4,700 yards with 23 TDs to just 15 INTs as a Toronto Argonaut in 2019 and adds a championship pedigree after winning two Grey Cups in six seasons in the CFL. Defensively, the Breakers have a chance to be stout with the return of LBs Jerod Fernandez and Vontae Diggs. On the defensive line, the Breakers boast Lorenzo Mauldin and Eddie Vanderdoes, who recorded five sacks from his defensive tackle spot last year. Given the talent on the Breakers' roster, they should be considered a favorite to once again be a playoff team.

2023 Preview - Gone is electric WR KaVontae Turpin, whose touchdown had rallied the Enforcers for a fourth-quarter lead after a 10-0 deficit to Columbus, but there's plenty of talent left with the Enforcers. Turpin was franchised by the expansion Vancouver Otters. Both of the team's top two running backs return in Darius Victor and Trey Williams, white Smith is excited about adding rookie Kingston Davis and veteran Thomas Rawls. There's a battle at quarterback in Smith's two QB system with last year's backup, De'Andre Johnson and Dakota Prukop. 2023 Preview - Haley recently announced that Brady White will get the first start at quarterback for his team in the XFL opening weekend at Liberty Stadium. The University of Memphis product won the job in a three-man competition with Ryan Willis and rookie Jarrett Guarantano. Haley said for now he's leaning on White's experience in the offense, having been with Haley last season. White will be helped by Memphis returning the team's top four pass catchers from last season in Derrick Dillon, Rashard Davis, John Franklin III and Carlos Henderson while adding LaQuon Treadwell and Osirus Mitchell. In the backfield, the Showboats have one of the top newcomers in RB Alex Collins, who spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and the Seattle Seahawks, totaling a career 1,997 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in five NFL seasons. LB Anthony Butler returns to lead the defense for Memphis. LB Greg Reaves is also back as one of Haley's top pass rushers. "The name of the game is winning. So, whoever gives us the best chance to win will be the guy handling the football most of the time. But Brady, having been with us most of the time last year, definitely had a head start. I know he's excited about being in Memphis, where he played his college football. He's like a superstar walking around town down here. I know he's enjoying and embracing that, and we'll just have to see how it plays out."

2023 St. Louis Stallions - HC, OC Skip Holtz, DC John Chavis, GM Randy Mueller, QBs J'Mar Smith, Jalen Morton and Alex McGough, RBs CJ Marable, ZaQuandre White, Bobby Holly and Bo Scarbrough, WRs Adrian Hardy, Marlon Williams, Deon Cain, Michael Dereus, Myron Mitchell, Austin Watkins and Davion Davis, TEs Thaddeus Moss and Jace Sternberger, OL O'Shea Dugas, Darius Harper, Cohl Cabral, Derwin Gray, Darius Harper, Matt Kaskey, Cole Schneider and Lukayus McNeil, DL Willie Henry, Jonathan Newsome, Darrion Daniels, Khalil Davis, Joe Jackson, Joe Ozougwu, Jordan Thompson, Willie Yarbary and Dondrea Tillman, LBs Henoc Muamba, Rashad Smith, Elijah Sullivan, DeMarquis Gates, Quentin Poling and Scooby Wright, DBs David Amerson, TJ Carter, TJ Green, Nate Holley, Donnie Lewis, JoJo Tillery, Brian Allen, Lorenzo Burns, Tyree Robinson and Christian McFarland, P Colby Wadman and K Brandon Aubrey

2023 Preview - The Stallions return the core of their 2022 XFL championship team. With depth and experience at quarterback with J'Mar Smith and Alex McGough both back, the Stallions are the only team in the sport that can claim continuity that dates back to last year. Smith is in Year 7 of his partnership with Holtz, which dates back to Smith's freshman year at Louisiana Tech, where he played quarterback and Holtz was head coach. McGough adds not only a year of experience in the league and in Holtz's system, but a dual-threat element. In fact, in the title game, McGough played wide receiver in an emergency situation, underscoring his ability to run away from defenders. Behind McGough and Smith, former Alabama Crimson Tide RB Bo Scarbrough returns as the man who will most likely be tasked with carrying the mail for the Stallions. Scarbrough fortified an otherwise shaky run game and added a leadership and championship quality. WR Marlon Williams is set up to become one of the young playmakers in the league. After making a mark as the No. 2 target on the team last year behind Victor Bolden who is now with Dallas. While it's clear the Stallions will have experience and playmaking options offensively, the strength of their team last year is poised to become the strength of their team this year: defense. Stallions defensive coordinator John Chavis put together a defense that featured one of the best returning linebacking corps in the league. With LBs DeMarquis Gates and Scooby Wright to command the middle of the defense, expect Chavis' corps to retain its moniker and show a marked increase in productivity. Expect DB JoJo Tillery to become a much larger presence in the defense. With an ability to play both safety positions, nickel and linebacker, Tillery recorded 86 tackles, including a sack, in 2022. Among newcomers, TE Jace Sternberger could become a top target in the passing game for the Stallions.

2023 Preview - The good news for the Panthers is that they won the final game of the season against the Pittsburgh Maulers, thereby winning not only the game but the right to the first overall pick in the inaugural XFL college draft. The Panthers took OL Jarrett Horst out of Michigan State, another uniquely XFL thing to do: they value offensive linemen. They will have the benefit of welcoming back LB Frank Ginda, who finished with the second-most tackles in the league last season with 153. The Panthers also took a chance by adding former NFL defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche to the roster after he spent the 2022 NFL season with the 49ers. With Nkemdiche, the Panthers defense will expect to limit opponents more effectively coupled with a balanced offense should translate to a better record for the Panthers. That offense will welcome back RB Reggie Corbin along with fellow back Stevie Scott. They'll likely be taking the ball from QB Ryan Mallett but he will be challenged for the starting spot by Carson Strong. Strong was a record-breaking signal-caller in college at Nevada and spent last year with the Philadelphia Eagle. He and Mallett have been battling in training camp for the right to start under center for the Panthers. WRs Cobi Hamilton and TJ Jones will be on the receiving end of whoever is under center.

2023 Preview - It was unsurprisingly an injury to QB Case Cookus that ultimately derailed the season after Cookus suffered a broken leg in the later portion of the season. While discouraging in the immediate, it means Columbus doesn't have far to go to get over the hump. The Ghosts averaged 26.2 points per game thanks in large part to Cookus, who didn't even become the team's starter until QB Bryan Scott was injured in Week 3. Columbus enters 2023 with Cookus again at the helm, this time as the unquestioned starter. Cookus will again have WRs Jordan Suell and Duron Carter to lean on after Suell signed back on for another season this past December. Cookus will also have a new target with promise, as he is joined this year by WR Corey Coleman, who will make his XFL debut. Coleman was a first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2016. Returning from a productive campaign on the other side of the ball is DB Channing Stribling, who led the XFL with twelve interceptions last season. Stribling was responsible for Columbus' league-leading turnover margin of +14. "Going into this year, we addressed the areas where we feel we needed to make strides personnel wise," Tressel said. "We've looked at the scheme, to make sure we're doing the right things schematically. So, that's what the offseason is about reflection and study. We've got to be self-critical of what we do and how we did it."

2023 Preview - Leftwich coached this team to the worst record in the XFL last season, but he barely acknowledged the past as he works to rebrand the franchise. Backup quarterback remains an uncertainty, choosing between James Morgan, a former Jets draft pick, and Troy Williams, who has three pass attempts in the Canadian Football League. Last year's top two rushers, Madre London and Garrett Groshek are both back. WR Bailey Gaither, who led the team in touchdown catches last year, got a look from the Ravens in the NFL but is back and will be "one of the studs of the league," Leftwich said. The biggest name on the defense is former Alabama and NFL LB Reuben Foster, a first-round pick with the 49ers who has not played since 2018, a promising NFL career derailed after two seasons by a domestic violence arrest (charges were later dropped) and a serious knee injury in 2019.

2023 Preview - Looking to create a spark on offense, the Brigade are counting on athletic quarterback Kenji Bahar to lead them when the team opens the season. The Monmouth product started for the Brigade in a 17-15 victory over the XFL-champion St. Louis Stallions in the second-to-last game of the year, the only loss for St. Louis last season. Also returning is bruising RB Mark Thompson, who led the team in rushing yards and scores. Joining Thompson in the running back room is TJ Pledger, an explosive playmaker coming out of the backfield as a pass catcher and Isaiah Crowell from Atlanta. The receivers group will be the strength of the offense, led by Tyler Palka, Anthony Ratliff-Williams and vertical threat Rashad Ross. Florida product center Nick Buchanan anchors the offensive line, along with right guard Jordan Steckler. Defensively, they have some playmakers to replace, with last year's XFL Defensive Player of the Year in DL Chris Odom gone, along with the league's leading tackler in LB Donald Payne. LB Ronheen Bingham is expected to step up with those two no longer on the roster, along with LBs Khalan Tolson and Isaiah Pryor. DBs Cariel Brooks and Jeremiah Johnson will control things in the secondary.
