Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment LLC Purchases Tampa Bay Bandits

January 13, 2024

Tampa, FL - Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment Football LLC led by Jeff Vinik, announced the purchase today of the Tampa Bay Bandits from Stuart Sternberg and Sunburst Sports & Entertainment LLC. "As our business in Tampa Bay evolves and we deepen our commitment to the community, we believe it makes sense to bring the Bandits under the Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment umbrella," said Vinik upon making the announcement. "The team is an asset for Tampa Bay and its sports fans and we want to ensure its stability and position in the XFL for the good of our community. We look forward to even more significant announcements in the future, further illustrating our intentions for Tampa Bay."

"It's an honor to partner with an organization that has such a celebrated legacy such as the Tampa Bay Lightning," XFL Co-Founder Vince McMahon added. "We are truly excited to add Jeff Vinik and Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment to the XFL today. Mr. Vinik brings a long-time passion for the sports and entertainment industry to the league and it is tremendous to welcome a group with football expertise brought by Tod Leiweke, having previously served as the CEO of the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks."

"I couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Mr. Vinik to the Tampa Bay Bandits family as he joins us in our quest for another XFL championship" Bandits head coach Steve Spurrier said. "Under his leadership, I am confident the team will be able to develop and sustain a high degree of stability, while consistently providing our fans with an excellent and exciting product on the field."

XFL Player Personnel Staff To Attend Under-Armour Senior Bowl

January 21, 2024

Jacksonville, FL - XFL player personnel staff will attend the Under-Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, for three days next week to take in practices and other events.

"Our agenda will entail attending practices that will give our XFL Football Administration and personnel department the opportunity to evaluate players and interview players, coaches, scouts and agents," said Brian Woods, XFL director of football development. "Approximately 98 percent of Senior Bowl attendees end up spending time in the NFL, so we expect most of these players to carry their talents on to the next level. With the potential for an NFL lockout, this number could be lower, as undrafted free agents may not be able to sign after the NFL Draft, thus increasing the pool for potential XFL players."

Derrick Brooks Named Team President

January 10, 2024

Tampa, FL - Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment LLC and majority owner Jeffrey Vinik, named Derrick Brooks President of the Tampa Bay Bandits, Brooks is joined in the front office by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate Jeff Gooch, who was named Vice President of Football Operations for the team. As President, Brooks will direct all aspects of the Bandits' business and football operations.

"We are very pleased to welcome Derrick and Jeff to the Bandit family," said Vinik. "When we purchased the Bandits, we made the same commitment to our fans that we did in purchasing the Tampa Bay Lightning. Our goals focus on winning football games while serving our fans and the Tampa Bay community in a world class manner. Derrick and Jeff, who are both well respected in the NFL and Tampa Bay communities, will lead our efforts on and off the field; they are a perfect fit for us."

XFL Week 1: Stampede Open the Inaugural Season of the UFL with 27-14 Win over Dallas Renegades

March 28, 2024

Dallas, TX - In a historic clash marking the inaugural game of the newly amalgamated United Football League, the reigning back-to-back USFL champions, the newly named Oklahoma City Stampede, made a resounding statement as they triumphed over the Dallas Renegades, 2023 champions of the XFL, with a final score of 27-14. Making his first career start, QB Matt Corral opened the matchup utilizing the passing game. Corral finished the game 201 passing yards, 25 rushing yards and one touchdown. QB Adrian Martinez also made a strong appearance, showing off his rushing capability just before sustaining an injury. He finished with 52 rushing yards on three attempts, with a long of 20 yards. RBs CJ Marable and Ricky Person each chipped in a touchdown for the Stampede offense. Marable led the offense in rushing attempts with 18 rushes totaling 67 yards. Person Jr. rushed for 31 yards with eight attempts. A strong defensive front kept the Renegades at bay on their home turf. LB Kyahva Tezino led the defense with six tackles. The defense as a whole totaled 48 tackles with two sacks and held the Renegades to 59 rushing yards.

On the opening drive of the game in a crucial 3rd and 3, a DL Carlos Davis sack caused a fumble recovered by DB Mark Gilbert. Stampede drove the ball downfield to to the 40-yard line before an interception. Dallas ended its final drive of the quarter with a field goal to take the 3-0 lead. Stampede opened the second quarter with a 27-yard field goal from K Chris Blewitt to tie the game 3-3. Dallas took an 11-3 lead after a six-play 72 yard drive and two point conversion. Martinez came in for Birmingham and picked up 25 yards in his first three snaps. Martinez led a drive downfield before an interception in the end zone. A DB Lorenzo Burns stop on 3rd down forced a punt just after the two-minute warning. With seven seconds left in the 2nd quarter, Corral completed a pass to Cain for the Stampede first touchdown of the season. Person made a diving conversion attempt that added two more points to the scoreboard to tie the game at 11.

After a punt on their opening drive, the Stampede were able to force a punt from the Renegades. On the next possession, the Stampede went 60 yards on five plays and scored off a Person rush at the two-yard line for a touchdown. Corral found WR Gary Jennings in the end zone for a two-point conversion to take a 19-11 lead. Renegades made a field goal later in the quarter to cut the lead to 19-14. After several short run gains, Corral utilized the passing game to get the Stampede down into the red zone. Marable ran up the middle for seven yards to score a touchdown. WR Amari Rodgers caught the two point attempt, stretching the lead to 27-14. On the next drive Dallas drove 29 yards before Gilbert intercepted QB Luis Perez at the five yard line. On their next possession the Stampede ran down over eight minutes of clock time with 15 plays ending in a field goal attempt. Blewitt missed the 51-yard attempt off the right upright.

XFL Week 1: Jake Bates Kicks Panthers To 18-16 Victory Over Crusaders

March 30, 2024

Detroit, MI - In a tightly contested affair, the Detroit Panthers defeated the London Crusaders 18-16 on Saturday, March 30 in their United Football League opener at Ford Field. K Jake Bates nailed a 64-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to win the game for Detroit. Despite both teams getting into opponent territory, neither offense could come up with points in the first quarter. The Panthers stout defense picked up where they left off last season. DL Breeland Speaks made an impact early, tallying his first sack of the 2024 campaign on QB AJ McCarron to force a third-and-long. DB Kai Nacua also picked up a sack towards the end of the first. The Crusaders defense made plays when they had to with a LB Mike Rose interception off Panthers QB EJ Perry. Detroit put together a nice drive to begin the second quarter. Perry connected with WR Devin Ross through traffic for a catch-and-run for 42 yards to get to the six-yard line. The drive halted on the very next play as Perry threw his second interception of the game, this time to DB Qwynnterrio Cole. London capitalized on the turnover, capping off a 16-play, 87-yard drive with a 36-yard K Andre Szmyt field goal to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Defense still showed up for the Panthers in the second half. DL Daniel Wise sacked McCarron for Detroit's third of the contest. London was forced to punt on their first possession out of the half. Detroit's offense came alive when it needed to. The Panthers picked up a quick 40 yards on two consecutive passes from Perry to WRs Trey Quinn and Marcus Simms. Two plays later, Perry hit TE Cole Hikutini for a 41-yard catch-and-run. Perry finished the drive himself with a four-yard touchdown to lead 7-3. The Crusaders drove deep into Panther territory looking to take the lead to begin the fourth quarter, but they were stuffed on fourth down. DL Walter Palmore made the play, stopping London RB Jacob Saylors from getting the first. After a punt, London went back to work. McCarron connected with Sutherland for a five-yard score to end a six-play drive. The Crusaders attempted a two-point conversion to extend their lead but failed, leaving it a 9-7 game. Panthers RB Wes Hills carried the offense on their ensuing drive, rushing for 18 and 24 yards on consecutive attempts to get into the redzone. With five minutes remaining in the contest, Perry gave the Panthers the lead with another touchdown run, this time from eight yards out. Detroit converted the two-point attempt with a Perry pass to Ross to lead 15-9. London drove down the field looking to win the game. After driving into Detroit territory, McCarron hit WR Marcell Ateman deep for 25 yards on fourth down to keep the game alive. The Panthers forced London into another fourth down, but McCarron found Ateman for a five-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. McCarron then found a wide open Sutherland on the one-point attempt to take a 16-15 lead with 49 seconds left. With no timeouts remaining, the Panthers drove into field goal range. On fourth down from the opposite 46-yard line, Bates played hero for Detroit, winning the game on his leg.

XFL Week 1: Phillips Debuts a New-Look Berlin Team in 27-12 Season Opening Win over the Defenders

March 31, 2024

Berlin, GERMANY - Berlin Head Coach Wade Phillips confidently on a few occasions told football fans that a new-style of football was coming to town. In his words, the Phillips defense and the Mike Leach air-raid or at least a version of it was coming. Berlin led from start to finish in holding off the Washington Defenders, 27-12, in front of 13,164 fans on Easter Sunday in the inaugural United Football League (UFL) opener for both teams. QB Chase Garbers made his debut as the new signal caller for the Bolts completing 76 percent of his passes while going 19-of-25 for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for one score. LB Jordan Williams, who led the XFL in tackles in 2023, picked up where he left off with a game-high 10 tackles. But it was an unpredictable special teams play involving P Brad Wing and OL Alex Mollette that sent shockwaves through Berlin right before halftime and immediately went viral on social media platforms. The play resulted in a 40-yard touchdown catch by Mollette from Wing for one of the best plays of the opening weekend in the UFL and quite possibly in professional spring football history. Berlin lined up for a 57-yard field goal attempt by K Donald De La Haye, but Wing popped up from his from holder position while De La Haye motioned out to receiver. Wing took the snap, rolled to his right and lofted a pass to Mollette who caught it at the 15-yard line and rumbled the rest of the way for the score giving Berlin a 20-9 lead heading into the locker room.

Berlin opened up the scoring with their first touchdown of the season when Garbers found RB Anthony McFarland for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 9:08 left in the first quarter putting the home team ahead, 7-0. WR Jontre Kirklins' 4-yd TD reception from Garbers made it, 14-3, in favor of the home team. Defenders K Matt McCrane connected on three field goals in the half - 50 yards, 34 yards and 48 yards to keep his team in the game. The defenses settled in the second half. McCrane connected on his fourth field goal, a 28-yarder, with 2:54 to go in the third quarter, drawing the Defenders within 20-12. DC looked to be on the move again in the fourth quarter. Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to WR Keke Coutee with 10:47 left in the game. The Defenders were flagged for a dead-ball personal foul on the play, which would have been accessed. Phillips challenged a false start on OL Jean Delance. The challenge was successful for Berlin negating the touchdown. Four plays later DB Darius Phillips intercepted Ta'amu at the 6-yard line and returned it 88 yards to the 6-yard line. Three plays later, Garbers ran it in for a 5-yard touchdown putting Berlin ahead 27-12. DC outgained Berlin in the second half,183-34. Berlin came up with three sacks and the interception in the second half. DL Tim Ward, Prince Emili and Wyatt Ray each had a sack. Ray finished with two sacks in the game. Ta'amu finished the game completing 25-of-45 passes for 235 yards and an interception. WR Ty Scott led the Defenders with four catches for 87 yards. Berlin's Jontre' Kirklin had a game-high eight receptions for 61 yards. McFarland led all rushers with 47 yards on nine carries.

XFL Week 1: Salt Lake City Showboats Hold off Houston Roughnecks, 18-12

March 31, 2024

Houston, TX - The Salt Lake City Showboats jumped out to an early lead and then held off the Houston Roughnecks 18-12 Sunday afternoon at Rice Stadium in both teams' United Football League season-opener. Memphis opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal from K Matt Coghlin with 4:31 left in the first quarter. The Showboats would extend their lead in exciting fashion just 49 seconds later. Houston WR Isiah Hennie caught a short pass in the left flat, where he was met by Showboats DB Kyree Woods, who forced a fumble. DB Christian McFarland scooped the loose ball up and returned it 12 yards and a 9-0 Salt Lake City lead. Another highlight play gave the Showboats a 15-0 lead with 6:57 remaining in the first half. QB Case Cookus drove Memphis from its own 16-yard line all the way to the 11. But the Showboats faced 3rd-and-8. That's when Cookus was able to find WR Vinny Papale in the back of the end zone. Papale hauled in an absolute laser from Cookus, while barely keeping his toes inbounds. Houston finally got on the scoreboard late in the first half with a field goal to make it 15-3.

The Roughnecks added another three off the foot of K JJ Molson early in the third quarter to make it a 15-6 game. Coghlin answered with a 51-yarder midway through the fourth quarter to give the Showboats a two-score lead. But his ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, which is a huge penalty in the UFL. Houston took over at the 50-yard line due to that penalty and cashed it in with the only Roughnecks' touchdown of the game to pull within six, 18-12, with 5:49 remaining. Salt Lake City was able to kill most of the clock, but was forced to punt with 46 seconds remaining. Hennie mishandled the high arcing kick off the foot of P Matt White and TE Wes Saxton recovered it for the Showboats to preserve the victory. Cookus was 23-of-40 for 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception. WR Daewood Davis hauled in a game-high seven receptions for 43 yards. WR Jonathan Adams had a game-best 49 yards receiving on four catches. Papale also had four receptions for 36 yards and the Showboats' lone offensive touchdown. Salt Lake City's defense made clutch plays when needed all afternoon. The Showboats tallied four sacks. LB Greg Reaves got to Guarantano twice, while LBs Maximillian Roberts and Jordan Ferguson also registered a sack apiece. LB TJ Neal led a balanced effort on the defensive side, racking up four solo stops. Ten different Showboat defenders had two or more stops.

The crowd was a record for a modern spring football league game. Crusaders K Andre Szmyt drilled a 22-yard game-winning field goal as time expired to give London its first win of the season. The kick ended a 7-play, 47-yard drive that covered the final 1 minute, 55 seconds of the game. In a second half that featured four lead changes, Dallas held a 24-21 lead with 10:55 left in regulation after RB De'Veon Smith scored on a 3-yard rush and Dallas converted the extra-point attempt. London tied the game on a 47-yard field goal by Szmyt with 6:52 remaining. Dallas K Taylor Russolino missed a 46-yard field goal attempt on Dallas' next drive to put the Crusaders in position for their game-winning march. The Renegades took their first lead of the game, 17-14, with 28 seconds left in the third quarter when QB Luis Perez hit TE Sal Cannella for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Crusaders WR Darrius Shepherd returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the 47 yard line and WR Marcell Ateman covered the remaining 53 yards on the next play with his second touchdown catch of the day from QB AJ McCarron. A 1-yard rush by RB Mataeo Durant for the extra point put the Crusaders back in front, 21-17, with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.

London entered halftime with a 14-11 lead thanks to a pair of touchdowns on both of the Crusaders' second-quarter drives. The Crusaders took an initial 8-0 lead with 10:36 left in the second quarter when Ateman caught a 24-yard pass from McCarron for Ateman's first touchdown of the night. McCarron connected with Shepherd for a two-point conversion to complete the drive. Dallas responded with an 8 play, 80-yard drive that ended when QB Lindsey Scott scampered for 6 yards into the end zone. Perez found RB Leddie Brown for a two-point conversion that knotted the game at eight. A 1-yard touchdown rush by Durant regained the lead for the Crusaders on the following drive, highlighted by a 32-yard reception that got the Crusaders to the 1 yard line. A 52-yard field goal by Russolino shaved London's lead to three points at the end of the first half.

April 6, 2024

Salt Lake City, UT - After trailing by as much as 16 points, the Berlin Thunder mounted a fourth quarter comeback to snatch the victory over Salt Lake City in front of 18,791 fans. QB Chase Garbers rallied the Thunder in the second half completing 70 percent of his passes for the second straight week. Garbers went 29-of-40 for 287 yards and tossed three touchdowns. WR Marquez Stevenson recorded the Brahmas first 100-yard receiving game of the season and added a touchdown. TE Cody Latimer's eight catches for 91 yards paced the offense in the second half. Latimer caught the go-ahead touchdown with three seconds left in the game. DB Jordan Mosley led the team with 10 tackles while LB Wyatt Ray led the defense with three tackles for loss. Down 19-8 with just under a minute left, WR Jontre Kirklin hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass from Garbers to make it a 19-14 game. After a failed three-point conversion, the Thunder elected to attempt a fourth and 12 for a chance to keep possession. Garbers converted on a 12-yard pass to Kirklin. With only 48 seconds left, Garbers marched the offense down the field. He hit Stevenson for two consecutive first downs and then connected with WR Justin Smith to get down to the 10-yard line. With three seconds left, Garbers connected with Latimer to give the Thunder a 20-19 lead and stun the Salt Lake crowd.

Salt Lake opened the game with a nearly eight minute, 13-play drive that resulted in a touchdown when QB Case Cookus connected with WR Daewood Davis for a two-yard score. The long opening drive was a preview of what was to come for the remainder of the first half. After scoring 20 points in the first half last week against the Defenders, the Thunder were held scoreless in the first half and managed only one first down and 14 total yards. Salt Lake dominated the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 20:12 minutes in the first half compared to Berlin's 9:48. Despite the time of possession discrepancy, the Thunder defense held steady following the opening drive and did not allow another touchdown for the rest of the game. While the Showboats managed two more trips to the red zone in the first half, the Thunder defense ensured they only came away with three points each time. Salt Lake K Matt Coghlin knocked in a 23-yard field goal late in the first quarter and a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give Salt Lake a 13-0 lead going into halftime. Coghlin gave Salt Lake a 16-0 lead late in the third quarter after he knocked through a 22-yard field goal, but Berlin finally got themselves on the board early in the fourth quarter when Garbers hit Stevenson for a 10-yard touchdown. RB John Lovett followed up the score by hauling in a five-yard catch for a two-point conversion to make it 16-8. Salt Lake drove down the field midway through the fourth quarter, but the Thunder defense stood tall in the red zone once again and forced Salt Lake to settle for another 22-yard field goal.

XFL Week 2: Panthers Fall To Stampede In Week 2

April 7, 2024

Detroit, MI - The Detroit Panthers fell to the Birmingham Stallions 20-13 at Ford Field. Oklahoma City broke the seal on their second drive with a 34-yard field goal by K Chris Blewitt. Stampede RB CJ Marable had the biggest play of the drive with a 19-yard scamper to put Oklahoma City in field goal range. Detroit marched into the red zone looking to respond but QB EJ Perry threw an interception on the first play of the second quarter to DB AJ Thomas at the Stampede 13-yard line. Perry's third interception of the season ended the promising drive. Oklahoma City quickly got into Detroit territory with three consecutive plays over 15 yards. QB Adrian Martinez got Oklahoma City into the red zone with a 29-yard run. The Panthers defense held strong, forcing the Stallions to settle for another field goal to make it 6-0. Danny Etling took over at QB for the Panthers on the ensuing possession but lost a fumble on a scramble three plays into the drive. DB Kenny Robinson scooped up the ball for Oklahoma City and returned it to the 35-yard line. Once again, Detroit locked down on defense. The Panthers secondary teamed up to break up a pass on third-down, forcing another Blewitt field goal. Perry came back into the game for the Panthers and immediately connected with WR Marcus Simms deep on third down for a 76-yard touchdown. Perry then found TE Cole Hikutini for the one-point conversion, making the score 9-7. In the waning minutes of the half, Stampede QB Matt Corral got a pass off with pressure in his face to Marable for 16 yards. DL Breeland Speaks picked up a roughing the passer penalty on the play, pushing the Stampede into the red zone. Three plays later, RB Ricky Person found the endzone, jumping over the pile for Oklahoma City's first touchdown of the game. Corral then connected with WR Kevin Austin for the two-point conversion and the Stampede took a 17-7 lead. With less than 30 seconds left, the Panthers only needed four plays to get into field goal range for K Jake Bates for a shot at points before halftime. Bates, who played hero for the Panthers in Week 1 with a 64-yard field goal, drilled a 62-yard field goal to end the first half on a positive note.

Both teams traded field goals in the third quarter. The Stampede added points right out of the half, capping a 12-play, 55-yard drive with a 20-yard Blewitt field goal, his fourth of the game. This put Oklahoma City up 10 halfway through the third quarter. Detroit responded quickly with another Bates field goal, this time a 52-yarder to keep it a one-score game. The Stampede looked to extend their lead and put the game away, but after driving to the nine-yard line, Corral threw an interception in the end zone to DB Keith Gipson, the first takeaway of the season for the Panthers defense. Detroit was unable to capitalize on the turnover, punting it back to Oklahoma City after three plays. However, they got the ball back with 2:25 remaining in the game. DL TJ Carter stopped Corral from gaining the first down, forcing a punt. Starting from their own 27-yard line, the Panthers started to move up the field. DL Carlos Davis had other plans, sacking Perry for a loss of 8. A roughing the passer penalty on the next play absolved the chunk lost, giving Detroit new life. Perry was poised as Detroit moved into Oklahoma City territory. He completed passes to a plethora of weapons, with Trey Quinn, Jordan Suell, and Hikutini all tallying receptions on the drive. Faced with a fourth-and-seven, the Panthers were unable to come up with the first down, sealing the game and the victory for Oklahoma City.

XFL Week 2: Washington Defenders Earn First Win of 2024 by Overcoming Houston Late

April 8, 2024

Washington, DC - QB Jordan Ta'amu's 17-yard touchdown pass to WR Ty Scott with 6:04 left in the game lifted the Washington Defenders to a 23-18 victory over the Houston Roughnecks in DC's home opener at Audi Field. The Defenders remain undefeated at home over the past two seasons, running the home winning streak to 10 games. Houston had an opportunity to win in the final moments after a 25-yard punt return gave the Roughnecks possession at the DC 27-yard line with 1:34 remaining. But a pair of false start penalties short-circuited the possession. On fourth-and-1 from the DC 24-yard line Houston QB Reid Sinnett was incomplete in the end zone, allowing DC to hold on. Houston took an early 6-0 lead when DB Corn Elder returned an interception off a deflection 98 yards for a score. It tied for the longest interception return in spring football history, matching a 98-yard touchdown return by the Birmingham Bolts in the 2001 version of the XFL.

DC answered near the end of the first quarter with a RB Darius Hagans 1-yard score. The Defenders grabbed their first lead of the game with under a minute left in the half. Trailing 9-6, Ta'amu found TE Briley Moore-McKinney for a 21-yard scoring strike. Houston K JJ Molson added his second field goal of the half on the final play before the intermission to make it 12-12 at the break. Sinnett put the Roughnecks back on top 18-12 five minutes into the third quarter when he found WR Keke Chism for a 34-yard touchdown pass. The Defenders pulled within three on a 43-yard K Matthew McCrane field goal two minutes into the fourth quarter, setting the scene for the Ta'amu-Scott connection that proved to be the difference. Ta'amu was 16-of-32 passing for 212 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Five different Defenders pulled in at least two receptions, led by WR Chris Rowland with a pair receptions for 55 yards. RB Cam'Ron Harris led the Defenders' rushing attack with 34 yards on nine carries. DB Michael Joseph led the DC defensive effort with a team-high five tackles, while LB Anthony Hines added a pair of tackles for loss. Sinnett finished 19-of-30 for 221 yards and one TD to pace the Houston offense. RB TJ Pledger rushed for a game-high 47 yards on 11 carries.

XFL Week 3: Defenders Get Their Revenge Over the Former XFL Champion Dallas

April 12, 2024

Dallas, TX - With just four seconds left in the fourth quarter Defenders K Matt McCrane nailed a 49-yard field goal to secure the 29 to 28 victory. The nail-biter between the Defenders and the Renegades took all 60 minutes to decide the winner after DC lost to Dallas last year in the XFL Championship. Dallas had an opportunity to win in the final moments after a 25-yard punt return gave the Defenders possession at the DC 27-yard line with 1:34 remaining. But a pair of false start penalties short-circuited the possession. On fourth-and-1 from the DC 24-yard line Houston QB Reid Sinnett was incomplete in the end zone, allowing DC to hold on. A 54-yard field goal from McCrane gave DC an early 3-0 lead with 5:55 remaining in the first quarter. The opening field goal was the longest of the season for McCrane but would be short-lived. Dallas got things going late in the first quarter, with a six-minute drive capped off with a touchdown five seconds into the second quarter. QB Luis Perez found WR Tyler Vaughns for a 19-yard touchdown to give the Renegades the lead. Dallas extended its lead to 14-3 with another passing touchdown from Perez, this time a 17-yard reception from WR JP Payton. The Renegades cashed in on the two-point conversion, with a successful rush from QB Lindsey Scott. DC cut the Dallas lead to five points with 1:12 remaining in the first half, as QB Jordan Ta'amu found WR Chris Rowland for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Dallas dominated possession in the first half, recording 21:51 time of possession compared to DC's 8:09. The Renegades ran 25 more plays than the Defenders. The first half also featured only one punt between either team.

DC opened up the scoring in the second half, with a 58-yard field goal from the leg of McCrane that cut the lead to two points. With 5:42 remaining in the third quarter, K Taylor Russolino increased the Dallas lead to five points with a 37-yard field goal. DC took the lead with 1:08 left in the third quarter, with a 14-yard touchdown reception by WR Brandon Smith. Prior to the touchdown, the Defenders had not led since the opening field goal. Dallas regained the lead with 12:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, this time coming on the ground. Scott rushed for a 13-yard touchdown, and a reception from TE Sal Cannella converted the two-point conversion. Russolino booted a 49-yard field goal with 2:08 remaining to extend the lead to 10 points. DC quickly responded, kicking off the next drive with a 57-yard kickoff return by Rowland. After a five-play drive, RB Cam'Ron Harris punched in a touchdown for the Defenders, which was followed by a successful two-point conversion by Ta'amu. Still trailing by two points, DC elected to go for the alternative kickoff. A 19-yard pass from Ta'amu to WR Ty Scott converted the 4th-and-12. The DC offense drove down the field, setting up a 49-yard field goal by McCrane for the 29-28 win.

XFL Week 3: Perry Nearly Perfect for Panthers in 34-20 Victory Over Roughnecks

April 14, 2024

Detroit, MI - The Detroit Panthers got back in the win column with a 34-20 win over the Houston Roughnecks at Ford Field. It was all hands on deck for the Panthers, led by QB EJ Perry with a superlative performance, completing 16-of-19 passes for 208 yards, a passing touchdown and two rushing scores. The Roughnecks wasted no time, opening the game with a QB Reid Sinnett one-yard touchdown run after a four-minute drive. Sinnett found WR Emmanuel Butler in the back of the endzone for the two-point conversion and an early 8-0 lead. Hit with a third-and-long on the Panthers first possession, Perry connected with WR Trey Quinn down the sideline for 23 yards to break into Houston territory. The Roughnecks were able to hold Detroit to a 48-yard K Jake Bates field goal to end the drive. DL Garrett Marino made the first big play of the day on defense for the Panthers, tackling RB TJ Pledger for a loss of five on Houston's first play of their ensuing possession. After two consecutive false start penalties, the Roughnecks were forced to punt. In the closing moments of the first quarter, Perry connected with WR Devin Gray for 25 yards to kickstart their drive. Early in the second frame, Perry took a keeper for two yards to convert a fourth down near the redzone. WR Marcus Simms then got into the action with a bobbling catch towards the sideline for nine yards, stealing a potential interception away. Three plays later, Perry finished the drive himself with an 11-yard touchdown run to take a 9-8 lead. Michigan was turned away on the two-point conversion, as RB Wes Hills was stopped at the one by DL Gabriel Sewell. Houston swiftly marched into Detroit territory, but DB Kai Nacua hauled in an interception after a Sinnett pass was batted into the air. That made it back to back games with a takeaway on defense for the Panthers. QB Danny Etling took the reins under center for the Panthers on their next drive, as Detroit looked to get him involved. After two scrambles for seven yards, an Etling incompletion led to Detroit giving the ball back to Houston. Despite a DL Walter Palmore sack, the Roughnecks were able to get points before half, capping a 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 25-yard field goal. This put Houston back in front 11-9 with under a minute left. Perry and company were able to drive to Houston's 37-yard line, which gave Bates another field goal opportunity. Houston tried to ice him, but Bates still knocked through a 55-yard field goal to take a 12-11 lead into the break.

It only took the Panthers 37 seconds to get back in the end zone, as Perry dotted one to Simms, who quickly turned upfield for a catch-and-run 66-yard touchdown on the first play of the half. The Panthers converted the two-point conversion with a pass to newcomer WR Siaosi Mariner to extend their lead 20-11. The Roughnecks created a chunk play of their own on the following kickoff, with WR Isiah Hennie returning one 75 yards to Michigan's 20-yard line. The Panthers stood firm, later forcing Houston to a 25-yard field goal. Perry wasted no time getting the offense in rhythm, linking up with Mariner again, this time for 25 yards. Perry later found the end zone once again with a nine-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the game and his fourth rushing touchdown of the season. RB Matthew Colburn rushed for the two-point conversion to widen the gap near the end of the third quarter. Detroit DL Breeland Speaks wanted in on the fun, sacking Sinnett for a loss of seven. Two plays later, Speaks forced heavy pressure on Sinnett, who was forced to throw the ball away on third down. On fourth down, DB Kendrick Whitehead blocked the Roughnecks punt and the Panthers recovered on the plus 26-yard line. Four plays later, Colburn found paydirt to break a score of 30 for Detroit for the first time this season. Detroit led by 20 heading into the final quarter. The Roughnecks opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown drive to muster some semblance of a comeback. Sinnett threw a quick pass to Justin Hall who broke the plane for the score. It was too little too late for Houston, however, who remain winless on the season.

XFL Week 3: Crusaders Emerge on Top of Berlin

April 14, 2024

Berlin, GERMANY - The London Crusaders came away with a 31-24 win over the Berlin Thunder with 21,790 fans in attendance. The London defense preserved the seven-point winning margin when it stopped the Thunder final drive at the 44 yard line after the 11-play march ended on a 4th-and-4 incompletion with 16 seconds left. The Thunder made it a one-possession game with 2 minutes, 15 seconds to play when QB Chase Garbers connected with TE Alizé Mack on a 2-yard touchdown pass. However, London RB Jacob Saylors had pushed the Crusaders lead to 31-18 on their previous drive with 8:39 left in the game when he scored on a 19-yard rush followed by a 5-yard catch for a two-point conversion. Berlin had closed to within two points, 20-18, when RB Anthony McFarland Jr. rushed for an 8-yard touchdown with 2:03 left in the third quarter. London K Andre Szmyt then padded the lead on the following possession with a 46-yard kick to extend the lead to 23-18 with 12:11 left in the game.

The teams traded field goals to begin the second half. Berlin K Ryan Santoso hit a 32-yard field goal with 11:38 to play in the third quarter to shave London's lead to 17-12, but Szmyt made a season-long, 54-yard field goal to restore the team's eight-point margin with 7:05 left in the third quarter. The Crusaders entered halftime with a 17-9 advantage after Szmyt drilled a 44-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. WR Darrius Shepherd gave the Crusaders possession at the 45 yard line with a game-high, 43-yard kick return. The Thunder had cut the Crusaders lead to 14-9 with 1:57 left before halftime when RB John Lovett reached the end zone on a 2-yard rush. QB AJ McCarron punctuated London's first offensive drive of the game with a 10-yard touchdown rush with 4:33 left in the first quarter. His scamper put London ahead, 6-3. XFL Week 4: Crusaders Rush to 32-17 Victory over Showboats

April 19, 2024

London, ENGLAND - The Crusaders collectively rushed for a season-high 133 yards. RB Jacob Saylors led the way against Salt Lake with a career-high 103 rushing yards. Saylors also set a franchise record for the longest running play in team history on a 57-yard burst with 6 minutes, 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The record run set up the Crusaders for their season-high fourth touchdown of the game when QB AJ McCarron found WR Jahcour Pearson for an 8-yard pass with 5:06 left to play, which gave the Crusaders their 15-point winning margin. As the defense held Salt Lake scoreless throughout the second half with 55 yards allowed, the offense extended the 20-17 halftime lead with a 10-play, 71-yard drive. McCarron finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to TE Jake Sutherland with 14:20 left in the fourth quarter. McCarron then rushed 1 yard for a one-point conversion to extend the London lead to 26-17. London opened the game with its most explosive quarter of the season, scoring 17 points in the first 15 minutes of play. RB Wayne Gallman capped the scoring on a 2-yard rush with 1:56 left in the quarter, followed by a two-point conversion catch by WR Marcell Ateman that put London up, 17-6.

Salt Lake rallied to tie the game at 17 points apiece with 1:16 left in the second quarter. However, the Crusaders still managed to retake the lead before halftime when K Andre Szmyt hit a 47-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining to put London up, 20-17. Szmyt also gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game, 3-0, when he hit a 54-yard field goal with 10:43 left in the first quarter to tie his longest field goal of the season, which he set a week earlier in a 31-24 win at Berlin. Salt Lake responded with a touchdown four plays later to take a 6-3 lead. WR Darrius Shepherd then set up the London offense with a season-high, 61-yard kick return to start the following drive. McCarron then found Saylors for an 11-yard touchdown pass to give the Crusaders a 9-6 lead with 7:25 to play in the first quarter.

XFL Week 4: Stampede Stand the Rain as They Clinch Their Fourth Straight Victory

April 20, 2024

Oklahoma City, OK - The Washington Defenders and the Oklahoma City Stampede dueled in Oklahoma City where the weather played a part in a rain delay. The Stampede secured the win 20 to 18 win. Starting QBs Jordan Ta'amu and Matt Corral battled for what could be considered the 'Ole Miss' bowl. Ta'amu and Corral both attended the University of Mississippi, even being in the same quarterback's room at one point. The back and forth between the Defenders and the Stampede took all 60 minutes and more to decide the victor as the Defenders winning streak comes to an end. Oklahoma City continue their undefeated season after the 20 to 18 walk-off win.

The Stallions started the game off with a turnover that led to the Defenders getting the ball back and scoring the first points of the evening matchup with a dart pass from Ta'amu to WR Chris Rowland in the back of the endzone for nine yards. Failing to convert on the two-point play the Defenders had a six-point lead. But making the score even was the Stallions with a 50-yard bomb from Corral to WR Amari Rodgers for the long house-call. But the one-point rush from the QB fell flat leading to a 6-6 score. After a long period weather delay a safety and a field goal for the Stampede gave the home team an 11 to 6 lead going into the second half. Corral was 13 for 16 with 170 yards at half, meanwhile the Defenders had a total of 129 yards of total offense. After a 21-point second half from both teams the Stampede had to rely on new K Ramiz Ahmed to hit the 46-yard winner with four tics left on the clock. The Defenders finished the game 251 yard of total offense with just 161 yards passing but Ta'amu had a 146 QB rating, meanwhile the Stampede tallied 356 yards of total offense with an efficient 19-29 240-yards, and a 146.4 QB rating.

XFL Week 4: Berlin Defense Walls off Panthers

April 20, 2024

Berlin, GERMANY - The Berlin Thunder improved to 3-1 overall after defeating the Detroit Panthers. QB Quinten Dormady started the game hot for the Thunder, connecting with WR Justin Smith for a huge gain through the air. The Thunder closed out the drive with points as RB John Lovett powered his way in from four yards out to make it 7-0. Later in the 1st quarter, Dormady launched another bomb to put Berlin within scoring distance. WR Jontre Kirklin showed off his catching capabilities with an unreal grab. To close out the drive, K Ryan Santoso drilled a 40-yard field goal to make it 10-0 with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter. As the Panthers were starting to build momentum, DL Jalen Dalton caused a takeaway, making QB EJ Perry fumble on the sack. With little time remaining in the first half, WR Marquez Stevenson instilled a boost of energy into the Brahmas sideline after almost taking a punt return for six. Some plays later, Dormady would find Stevenson through the air to make it 16-0. As time expired in the first half, K Jake Bates connected from 49 yards out to put the Panthers on the board. Berlin would go into halftime with a 16-3 lead.

With not much scoring in the 3rd quarter, as both defenses were getting off the field, the score remained 16-3 with 15 minutes left in the ball game. Another takeaway for Berlin came in the 4th quarter as QB Danny Etling of the Panthers attempted to scramble but ran into a huge hit, causing him to cough up the football. The Thunder capitalized off the turnover and extended their lead to 16 points. The Panthers managed to reach the endzone with around three minutes left in the game, but it was a bit too late for a comeback. The Thunder picked off Etling on the Panthers’ next drive and ran out the rest of the clock to win this one 19-9.

XFL Week 4: Roughnecks Savor in First Victory of the Season Following the Battle of the Lone Star State

April 21, 2024

Houston, TX - In an epic showdown against their home state rivals, the Dallas Renegades, the Houston Roughnecks battled ruthlessly and came out on top with their first win of the season, 17-9. In the first set of fifteen, both teams struggled to get points on the board. But even through a momentum struggle, Dallas found an ounce of momentum with a 31-yard field goal to lead the Roughnecks 3-0 late in the first. Houston would come up big defensively as DB Kiondre Thomas would come up with a big interception on the HOU 8-yard line to halt Dallas' scoring drive. Still brushing dust off their shoulders, the hometown boys could not get a profitable start offensively, as they punted the ball twice before heading into the Second Quarter. The Roughnecks possessed the ball at the start of the new quarter, on a crucial 4th and 1. A ripple effect of vigor would begin as RB Mark Thompson rushed for 12 yards to set up the boys in blue for a much needed first down. Following a series of incompletions, Houston would settle for a 25-yard field goal to even the score 3-3. But the Roughnecks were only getting started, gaining possession of the ball again with 6:26 remaining before the half. QB Reid Sinnett would march his team down the field as WR Emmanuel Butler caught a 3-yard touchdown to put the boys in blue on top 9-3. To cement their lead going into halftime, TE Braedon Bowman would successfully complete a 2-point conversion to increase their lead 11-3.

At the start of the second half, the Roughnecks received the ball and started their ball on their 30-yard line. After a consecutive series of hefty yards gained by WR Justin Hall (15), TE Braedon Bowman (13), TE Woody Brandom (11) and WR Keke Chism (12), Houston was once again in the redzone looking to score. With the ball in the hands of RB Mark Thompson, he would kick the door down-rushing for 10-yards pushing the Roughneck lead to 17-3. The triumph would be short lived as Dallas pushed back with their own touchdown by former Roughnecks WR Deontay Burnett, bringing the score to 17-9. The ball would be punted twice more to lead into the last set of fifteen for this Texas-sized showdown. The fourth saw a wave of yellow flags as both teams drew two penalties each. The game began to quiet down as the contest of back and forth, three and outs carried on. The final excitement of the match came in the final 18 seconds as Houston would seal the Renegades' fate with a fumble recovery by LB Gabriel Sewell-allowing the Roughnecks to kneel into victory.
