XFL Week 14: Alliance Squander Fourth-quarter lead to Argos in Fourth Straight loss
May 18, 2023
Montreal, QUEBEC, CANADA - If good teams invariably find a way to win, bad teams will ultimately find ways to lose. Right now, the Alliance aren’t a good team. “We’re not there yet,” QB Cody Fajardo said after watching Montreal squander a 20-13 fourth-quarter lead and lose 23-20 to the Toronto Argonauts on Thursday night before an announced 27,626 Molson Stadium spectators. “Obviously, we’re .500. And when you’re .500, you’re not a good football team." A K Boris Bede 38-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining in regulation time proved to be the difference, who won their fifth straight game. The Alliance might have sent the match to overtime with a valiant rally in the dying seconds that was assisted by a 33-yard completion to WR Tyson Philpot. But K David Côté’s 45-yard attempted field goal on the final play was blocked by DL Dewayne Hendrix and sent Montreal to their fourth successive defeat.
Trailing 13-3 five minutes into the second half, Montreal scored the next 17 points and appeared primed to end its losing skid. A seven-play, 70-yard drive eight minutes into the third period ended in a one-yard run by RB Jeshrun Antwi. Slightly more than three minutes later, Côté kicked a 23-yard field goal after the Alliancewere unable to find the end zone from the Toronto six-yard line. The team’s inability to produce in the red zone is a recurring theme. Montreal then went 79 yards in nine plays, culminating in Fajardo’s 14-yard scoring strike to Philpot. The Alliance defense took control of the game in the second half and stopped Toronto on a fourth-down gamble from the Montreal 21. But when it was counted on to make yet another stop, it failed badly. The visitors required only two plays, and 13 seconds, to march 66 yards to score the tying touchdown at 13:19. QB Chad Kelly connected with WR Damonte Coxie for a 41-yard passing play behind DB Dionte Ruffin. Fajardo rebounded from a horrible first half, during which he passed for only 63 yards, to finish 30 of 39 for 274 yards and one touchdown. He also was intercepted late in the game, from the Toronto 49, when the Alliance might have been in position to kick the go-ahead field goal. But Fajardo was hit from behind by former Montreal LB Adarius Pickett, altering his throwing motion. The pass was then intercepted by DB Jamal Peters, who returned the ball to the Montreal 40. That put the Argos in position for the winning field goal.

XFL Week 14: Offense Finds Footing as Dragons Stop Paris
May 20, 2023
Paris, FRANCE - After playing two straight home games at Lumen Field the Seattle Dragons traveled to Paris to take on the winless Paris Musketeers. In the first quarter, WR Kelvin McKnight registered a 49-yard punt return, his longest return of the season. After McKnight secured great field position for the Dragons offense, K Dominik Eberle knocked in a 37-yard field goal, giving Seattle an early 3-0 lead. As the game transitioned into the second quarter, Musketeers K Jose Borregales evened the score at 3-3 after a successful 26-yard field goal attempt. Shortly after, McKnight returned a kickoff for 45-yards. The drive resulted in another Eberle field goal, this time for 27-yards, securing a 6-3 Seattle lead. Musketeers RB Devin Darrington scored the first touchdown of the game on the following drive, punching it in from the 3-yard line. Darrington followed it up with a successful 1-point conversion giving Paris their first lead of the game, 10-6. Eberle closed out the first half by banking a 54 yard field goal, his third of the game and the second longest in the entire XFL this season. The Musketeers led 10-9 heading into halftime. The Dragons re-grouped during halftime and came out firing in the second half with DiNucci finding WR Blake Jackson in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown reception. Leading XFL WR Jahcour Pearson, earned Seattle a 17-10 lead after pulling in a successful 2-point conversion. The Musketeers offense answered with a 43-yard run by Darrington that resulted in a touchdown to cut the score to 17-16. Paris' 1-point conversion proved unsuccessful thanks to a Niko Lalos interception.
The fourth quarter opened with a 27-yard Eberle field goal, his fourth of the game, which widened the Dragons lead to 20-16. Soon after, Borregales matched the Dragons with a 50-yard field goal, his season high. Late in the game, the Dragons special teams unit came up big, DB Alijah Holder blocking P Mac Brown's punt, placing the ball on the 6. The Dragons capitalized on the turnover and expanded the score to 26-19 after DiNucci spotted WR Juwan Green in the endzone and completed a 4-yard touchdown pass. The Musketeers looked to drive the ball down field on their next series but fell short after Darrington fumbled on a catch and run that was enforced by DB Antoine Brooks and recovered by DB Rojesterman Farris. Paris' defense took a final stand forcing the Dragons to punt on their ensuing possession, but Seattle's defense turned on the pressure. In the final moments of the game, the Musketeers turned the ball over on downs continuing their winless season.

XFL Week 14: Crusaders Heat up in Runaway Win at Vegas
May 20, 2023
Las Vegas, NV - The London Crusaders returned to the road after a pair of home games and delivered their largest margin of victory of the season in a 29-6 win Saturday over the Las Vegas Vipers at Cashman Field. The Crusaders offense produced a season-high 29 points and 328 total yards while tying a season high with four touchdowns. The defense held the Vipers to 230 total yards and 43 rushing yards, which were both the fewest by a London opponent this season. The London defense also allowed its fewest points of the season and held Vegas scoreless until a touchdown with 7 minutes, 5 seconds left in the game. The six points allowed are also tied for the fewest allowed by an XFL team this season. After beginning the game with three incompletions, Crusaders QB AJ McCarron began a streak of 19-straight completions. McCarron compiled 200 passing yards with touchdowns during the streak, which covered nearly four full scoring drives to help build the London lead to 23-0 in the third quarter. After a scoreless first quarter, WR Gary Jennings found the end zone on the first play of the second quarter with a 4-yard reception. McCarron then connected with WR Darrius Shepherd on a 5-yard pass for a two-point conversion to give Lonodn an 8-0 advantage. McCarron was a perfect 7-for-7 with 51 passing yards and a 16-yard run on the scoring drive. McCarron extended his completions streak to 15 on the next drive to set up K Donny Hageman for a 40-yard field goal that extended London's lead to 11-0 with 2:25 left before halftime. London tacked on another six points with 34 seconds remaining the first half when Shepherd made a 30-yard touchdown catch. Shepherd completed his night with a 6-yard touchdown catch for London's final score that re-established their 23-point lead with 3:06 left in the game. DB Lavert Hill gave the Crusaders offense its first opportunity of the second half with his first of two interceptions. The offense turned his first takeaway into a 7-play, 49-yard drive that ended on a 1-yard rush by RB Kareem Walker with 9:32 remaining in the third quarter.

XFL Week 14: Renegades Edged in Rematch with Munich
May 21, 2023
Dallas, TX - Facing each other for the second time, the Munich Mercenaries avenged the loss to the Arlington Renegades with a 15-9 win at Choctaw Stadium. Munich built a 9-0 halftime lead after holding Dallas to just 46 1st-half yards. The Mercenaries took a 3-0 advantage on a 28-yard field goal from K Parker Romo at the 1:48 mark of the 1st quarter and added a defensive touchdown on a strip sack by LB Delontae Scott and 44-yard fumble recovery by LB Jordan Williams with 6:34 remaining in the 2nd quarter. After rushing for only 18 yards in the 1st half, the Renegades clipped off 28 on the ground in their opening possession of the 2nd half to set up a season-long 53-yard field goal by K Taylor Russolino. On Munich's second play from scrimmage following Russolino's field goal, Dallas LB Donald Payne intercepted QB Kurt Benkert. That set up a Renegades' 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Drew Plitt to WR LuJuan Winningham, who acrobatically stretched back across his body to pull in his team-leading second receiving touchdown of the season at 8:39 of the 3rd quarter.
The teams remained tied into the 4th quarter, when aided by an Dallas 41-yard pass interference penalty, Munich re-gained a three-point edge, 12-9, on a 45-yard field goal from Romo with 8:56 to play. A 48-yard connection through the air by Plitt to WR JaVonta Payton on Dallas' next possession positioned the Renegades inside Munich's 15-yard line. However, Russolino's right-footed kick from the right hash sailed right of the goal post from 36 yards which would have re-knotted the game with 4:05 showing. A 46-yard field goal by Romo with 1:46 left put the Mercenaries up six, and an interception with 14 seconds left by DB Tenny Adewusi with Dallas driving in Munich territory iced the contest.

XFL Week 14: Promising Start Goes Awry in Second Straight Loss
May 22, 2023
Washington, DC - The Houston Roughnecks found themselves on the losing end in back-to-back games as they fell to the Washington Defenders by a score of 37-26 at Audi Field. The game had an attendance of 22,492. Houston got on the board first in this one as RB Max Borghi punched in a 4-yard touchdown, set up by a facemask penalty against the Defenders' defense. A successful two-point try pass attempt from QB Brandon Silvers to WR Cedric Byrd put the Roughnecks up eight. On the other end, after a defensive pass interference penalty put the ball at the 1-yard line for DC, the Houston defense stood tall, holding them to a 33-yard field goal. After one quarter of play, the Roughnecks led 8-3.
The first points of the second quarter came just after the two-minute warning, as DC punched in a 1-yard touchdown. On the ensuing drive, down 9-8, Houston found themselves on the wrong end of a pick six. A successful two-point try pass made the score 17-8 going into halftime, in favor of the home team. The Roughnecks' defense gave up a 1-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, making the deficit 23-8. After another Houston punt, DC would tack on a 32-yard field goal, pushing their lead to 26-8. Houston's offense responded accordingly as QB Cole McDonald connected with WR Deontay Burnett for an 85-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 26-14. DC responded with a 30-yard touchdown pass of their own, pushing the lead back up to twenty. The following drive, RB Max Borghi punched it in for a 1-yard touchdown, his second of the game. Another field goal by the Defenders made the score 37-20. A 1-yard touchdown rush by McDonald made it 37-26 with just under two minutes remaining. After a failed 4th & 15 onside attempt, the game would end with DC in victory formation.
